Gender equality is a minefield, at times.

Remember back in my warehouse days as a manager, we had two main areas:

Breakcase - basically the mezzanine area where you could pick or stock orders from a push cart.

Fullcase - PIE equipment (rider pallet jack, reach truck, and order pickers) in an area that dealt with big automotive parts like car batteries, rotors, drums, rack&pinions, and cases of antifreeze/oil.

The Fullcase area paid an additional equipment premium of $.25/hour, provided you were over there at least half of the pay cycle. To prevent people from getting too burned out, I would do my best to rotate them so the same person wasn't picking or stocking car batteries for 10 hours a day two days in a row.

As you can imagine, since there was a chance at more money to be made in that area I would get into back and forth arguments with some of the female workers. Granted, I was more than willing to train anyone on the equipment and have them in the rotation. The problem was after a day or two over in that area they would complain about being tired and not able to hit their minimum production numbers, so I'd transfer them back to breakcase.

Then when their check came they would ask why they didn't get the extra $.25 premium since they're technically equipment trained. Explained that just because they're equipment trained doesn't mean they quality for the premium. The team that designed the productivity system literally had the fullcase zones tagged separately from breakcase. If you weren't actively working in zones 40, 50, or 60 for at least half of your time on the productivity system, you wouldn't get the premium.

They'd say its not fair they aren't making the same amount as people working over there, I'd rebuttal with it's much more physically demanding work and honestly the $.25 is on the low side to incentivize people to do that grueling work every day.

I feel for guys that work at places that deal with customers and heavy product, like Home Depot. Can honestly say in all the times I've ever been there to load up on bags of material or other heavy items there has NEVER been a female to help me load - they always call the nearest guy over. Can only imagine stocking and moving shit is the same way there, though they probably get paid the same amount.

With point #1, Boss Karen is missing it. It's one thing to call out sick. That's a generic thing and a lot of HR departments recognize and accept that people will use sick time for something other than actually being ill. By calling out sick, you're not obligated to provide specific details as to your malady.

But invoking a day specifically for menstrual issues is different. Using the menstrual day is itself an admission that menstrual issues are the problem. To use it at all is to make that claim.

So, yes, HR raises a very good point with how dicey that policy can be from a legal standpoint. They're walking a tightrope between giving women some potentially needed time off in a way that is neither discriminatory nor intrusive. Frankly, it's a miracle that (apparently) no legal actions have come out of it.

As a side note, anybody who has worked in majority-female offices can attest to how common it is for women to call out for menstrual problems whether such an allowance exists in PTO or not. So, I find it VERY hard to believe that Boss Karen works in the only office in the entire world where women strictly abide by the honor system and the women police their own to make sure nobody abuses the policy. She needs to sell her bullshit someplace else.

Unpopular opinion - equal pay for equal work. If women are working 1 day less, pay them one day less, pay the men one day more, or give the guys their day off. The second you start playing favors (like “women get this but men don’t”) you’re going to inevitably have issues like this. Either an hour of a man’s time is worth the same as an hour of a woman’s time or it isn’t; don’t ask the men to work more for the same pay. Women have been complaining about that for like a hundred years.

Unfortunately, biology is not equal. So if you want to be socially equal (i.e. be taken just as seriously, make the same pay) you will have to ignore biology and tough it out, the same way men are expected to to arguably a greater extent.

Also, if women got a free leave per month, that adds up to 12 extra days a year per female employee. That's a huge loss to an employer. This dumb rule that she thinks will protect women would actually make any intelligent owner more likely to hire men exclusively. Unless of course, the men also take that many days off so it equals out either way. This is the same problem we've seen with granting maternity leave but not paternity leave, etc.

So, yeah, kind of shooting yourself in the foot here. What else is new?

This has hella r/antiwork vibes to it. Why can’t one day to yourself per month be a thing? We can incentivize it so that people try not to take that day off so we don’t run the risk of half of all of the team being gone during any working day. Can’t make the incentive too big but just enough that people still want to come in for it. Personally? I’d take the day. Unless I was struggling that month. Then I wouldn’t.

Does it disgust anyone else how normalized these 40-60 hour work weeks have become? Feels like we’re all just working our lives away for some company that could replace us in the fly. Sure we are doing the thing which is our contribution to society and we need to do it to get paid to buy everything to live.. but it’s so fucking depressing. No wonder people turn to crime. I mean, if you get sick too much then you lose your form of income. It’s happened to me twice at new jobs before. Almost every new job I’ve had since 2017, I get a little sick within the first month. Well of course I’m on probation for being new so calling out once is like calling twice. Then you feel pressure to return as soon as you feel good for a full day. But what happens if you get sick that following night after your return to work? You call out again and it counts against you. Between that and calling out for a car accident- I’ve lost a job that way. 3 instances I never asked for and never saw coming and I run the risk of becoming homeless. What the fuck is this world? Why are most people living paycheck to paycheck and simply can’t get out of that cycle? I’ve tried. Luckily I’m young so I have time but got dammit this world is fucking ridiculous.

The answer towards period pains/discomfort should absolutely be "If you feel unwell stay home, do you feel unwell?" Making it especially about period pains or some such is sexual discrimination.

Also, no you are not disclosing your menstraul/health status anytime you take sick leave. Sick leave is intended for use when you are sick, but the government explicit permits it to be used for any reason whatsoever. Likely explicitly to avoid that. It's why your employer cannot demand to know why you are calling out sick, though they may ask, or even ask if you have a communicable disease. Also, yes, unfortunately in the US, anti-discrimination laws are not one-way streets. It'd actually be illegal in the US to forbid an employee from celebrating, or even recognizing, a white history month, if you openly recognize a black history month. The reason being should be obvious. If it's not, let me spell it out for you; racism is bad, no matter the reason, the victim, or the offender.

Regardless, most relevantly what should be considered here is why it is that it emotionally hurts you so, when someone else gets what you've been given as well? Especially seeing as it takes nothing from you.

Honestly? If someone takes a sick-day leave, and openly goes on vacation, that's basis for legal action and even firing under most legislation.

It doesn't matter at all if a woman or a man takes sick leave. This day is very openly and strictly declared as a SICK leave, not a holiday. So taking the sick day between the holidays which is already sus as fuck, while openly planning a vacation - for anyone in upper management with half a brain would lead to a letter of reprimand and would be followed up with legal action.

That makes this post very hard to believe for me tbh.

This isn't even so much a women vs men issue, outside the fact that this person is talking about it in that way.

She must be absolutely insane to think that offering other people in the company a full 12 extra days of time off every year (which is crazy, I get 25 total thanks to years worked, but normally it's as low as 21) is somehow 1. A bad thing and 2. About her!

If a colleague of mine was told "hey, you got a cool pen like Vandal has", I wouldn't think "how dare they give him a pen", I'd think "nice, more cool pens!"

I don’t know how I feel about the period leave system in general, but I’m not part of the culture that has it. It apparently works in the culture you’re in. Trying to making another culture’s law comply with U.S. employment law is at the root of this, and it’s unnecessary. U.S. law doesn’t apply where you are; the laws of your jurisdiction do. Your U.S. headquarters isn’t required to impose U.S. rules on your office (just like a London-based employer isn’t required to apply UK vacation minimums to U.S.-based employees).

Your country’s law is saying, “We’re giving this accommodation to everyone with this specific medical condition (difficult periods).” By responding that everyone must get that, your U.S. office is doing the equivalent of saying “if people with wheelchairs get special parking, everyone needs to get special parking.” Moreover, they’re undermining the accommodation for people who do have difficult periods — the very people it was intended for — because now they get a day off when they feel sick, and non-period-having people get a day off for fun. That’s not equal and it’s clearly not what the law was intended to do. (And yes, women in your office could respond by taking a day off every month whether they need it or not, but that sounds totally at odds with the culture of this benefit in your country.)

It might be interesting to talk with a local lawyer about whether your company’s “solution” violates the local law — because if the law is written in a way that requires women to be given an additional day, separate from the rest of the time off the company provides, your company’s policy wouldn’t comply.

To be honest she does have a point which most people in here won't admit. If there is a local law specifically meant to give women one day off for period symptoms then it should be used just for that. But when she started rattling off terms like transgender and cisgender naturally I take it ass she's one of those LGBTQ loonies. If the company want to give everyone one day off however it's their choice too. But I can see it be annoying, like no offense if my daughter uses a public toilet for girls and I see a Lia Thomas type walk in, I'm not gonna let that happen.

It's meant for a specific purpose that men thankfully don't have to face. That said, PMS/PMDD is treatable for many women... If they're willing to seek treatment and not use it as an excuse for a day off.

I would suggest that if men are willing to claim they are having a period day there is something wrong with your workplace. A simpler solution would be to allocate 12 more sick days or 12 more holidays which don't require any notice. I suspect the men and women would be happier with this.

But I have a feeling this person just doesn't like workers having rights at all, men or women. Especially, the right to not have to come beg and grovel for time off.

She’s asking for equity, not equality. Give people what they need, not give everyone the same. I doubt most of the people in these comments ranting about how stupid and unnecessary this sounds have never experienced period pain. Many women vomit on a daily basis due to their cramps, and I have heavily considered getting a hysterectomy (tubes tied, but for women) to prevent it in the future. It makes sense that we should be given a day off if we are in that much physical discomfort. However, I do think her way of saying it is odd. We should be allowed a day off for health purposes if necessary, and so should men. We don’t need an allotted one day (which won’t even help some people, it’s much more than just one day) for this one health problem.
