The whole body positive / fat liberation thing was started by fat women, is still overwhelmingly led by fat women, and there’s even been debate that thin women can’t be part of that movement as anything other than allies. Thin women didn’t start it and don’t lead or even primarily boost it, so the idea it was started to “reduce female competition” makes zero sense.

There’s not some big conspiracy. It’s just that fat women felt shitty about how they were seen and represented, and so organized a movement around “celebrating” their bodies.

Heaps of women who aren’t fat ridicule, shame and bully fat women. I’ve actually seen plenty anecdotal accounts from fat women that say they’re mostly ignored by men, it’s the women who are really vicious about weight.

So no. I don’t think it’s a way for thin women to “reduce competition”. I just think some thin women aren’t assholes and want people to stop being nasty.

The Body Positivity movement is most adamantly upheld by the same fat women it aims to admire.

And most non-fat women aren’t diehards for this movement, they’ll post a fat woman with rolls and compliment her fierce confidence and that’s about it. They don’t really care about the movement.

I have come to the conclusion through browsing these incely subreddits and from people I know irl that fat women and incels have the same mentality: They both refuse to acknowledge that they are responsible for their own problems, they expect the world to change for them instead of solving their own problems, and when the world doesn't change to suit them they become angry and bitter.

It really doesn’t matter how the body positivity movement was created, what matters is it’s current iteration.

Women really have two weapons when it comes to the dating marketplace. Sex and shame. If the sex component isn’t there, then shame is the next tool that gets used.

“Beautiful at any size” is a fine mantra if you want to talk about personal worth and value, but it’s been corrupted into telling what others must deem acceptable as well. I have seen the word fatphobic used as nauseam for common sense shit, such as not wanting to be with an overweight woman who does not workout or an obese woman. Or saying that if the woman I was with gained an inordinate amount of weight while we were together barring some kind of crazy illness, it would be an issue for me.

I don’t disagree, though, that it does have an effect on the dating market. Whether you find this offensive or not, 10 or so years ago you would see overweight/heavier women kind of intrinsically knowing they’d have a tougher time dating and this resulted in behaviors to narrow that gap. That is completely gone today. And while people may see that as a good thing, it’s also delusional to believe that your appearance will have no effect on dating and who is attracted to you. Just like a short guy’s best option is to hit the gym hard to compensate for what he may deal with in dating.

I’d also say that while I can see the element of intrasexual competition you are putting forth, I could also see it as an extension of the female uber alles.

The body positivity movement started as a motivational movement for women in general to not be ashamed of their bodies. Whether they were disabled, had excessive stretch marks, small boobs, cellulite, whether they were fat, etc. It wasn't just about fat women, it was an attempt to encourage women not to feed into unrealistic body expectations peddled by media and corporation. Somewhere along the line fat women hijacked the movement with mass corporate backing for their message.

The body positivity movement is a way for corporations to normalize obesity so that they aren't held liable for the franken foods and forever chemicals that they're putting into everything causing obesity. Obesity is a global epidemic. It used to be extremely difficult for obese people to weight more than 300lbs because the caloric requirement to get to that weight was still very demanding. Corporations are backing and supporting these movements because they're making most of the world obese through addiction to hyper palatable foods and through the destruction of gut enzymes and microbes that help process, digest, and control food cravings.

Healthy/thin women aren't in competition with men who are sexually attracted to and desire fat/obese women. People typically date those that share the same lifestyles and beliefs. Healthy women date healthy men. Healthy women aren't competing with fat women for ALL of the men that find healthy women attractive. A healthy woman isn't going to "Compete" for the attention of a fat/sick male. Body positivity isn't sexual competition for healthy/thin/normal/muscular women.

I would say it was,

The body positivity movement isn’t just about being fat or thin, it’s about being comfortable in your own skin. Thin women get uncomfortable in their bodies too, they usually don’t have any breasts and even resort to using boys clothing as it’s the only thing that fits, bras are just there for show and every will tell you wearing a bra all day is uncomfortable.

It’s supposed to be a movement that helps to unite women in all forms, showing that we’re all connected and yet we’re all are different at the same time, old young, fat, thin, light skin, dark skin etc etc

And it works, it makes women feel better about themselves. If your going to constantly compare yourself to other people your never going to be happy.

I agree it’s a strong movement mainly for larger ladies but perhaps they’re the ones who need a bit more positivity in their lives, it’s not a movement to force men to sleep with fat women (as much as everybody here seems to think) it’s actually nothing to do with men. It’s to help women who want to feel better about themselves feel better about themselves.

It might come as a surprise to lots of people here but when you feel better about yourself, you make better choices for yourself. You CHOOSE to eat better because you like how you feel afterwards, you CHOOSE to exercise more because it makes you feel better.

Eh I think it's moreso about unhealthy women trying to dictate what preferences are socially acceptable for men. Which is why the term "fatphobic" has now come into existence.

The women who are in opposition to body positivity tend to be thin, normal size or or fit.

There is also a financial incentive to promote clothes for obese women, because there are quite a few of them. Which is why there are "plus size" women models, but every male model looks like...what a model generally looks like.

Actually, I just think that shame is a bad motivator for weight loss that sticks. Even if someone is motivated to lose weight because you were mean to them, they're more likely to go for some fad diet and then return to their old ways. Body positivity means focusing on health over appearance, and focusing on minding your own business over trying to shame people into losing weight, which is especially important for fat people who wouldn't be conventionally good-looking even if they were thin or don't see a particular benefit to being conventionally good-looking. I will also point out that the body positivity movement applies to women and men, even though mainly women are body shamed (despite being overweight in smaller quantities than men).

The truth I think is a bit more simple. I remember when the body positivity movement started getting traction, back then it was not focused on "fat women are beautiful too" or whatever. It was a reaction to depiction of bodies (predominantly female ones) in popular culture and how that affects societal attitudes towards the human body. It was supposed to encourage people to accept their "imperfections" which are entirely normal, such as scars, cellulite, touching thighs, stretch marks, hip dips and fat that is entirely within a healthy body fat percentage. Basically all to raise awareness that even those beautiful models you look at have shit like stretch marks and cellulite too.

From there it evolved into this confused beast that we see today.

To make body positivity a thing has zero impact on the dating dynamics. Men won't start to prefer fat women. And not having body positivity will also not make fat women take the steps to get slim. At this point, body positivity is a win-win: slim people get virtue signalling out of it, fat people get mental health out of it.

If people could prevent getting fat, they would already do it.

I support body positivity because a close friend has gotten more shit for being fat than I ever got for smoking cigarettes, which is gross and unhealthy as hell, but hey, I'm thin!

To me "body positivity" just means "let Lizzo make music without 8,000 comments saying she'd take up 2 airplane seats."

Same as when I cut my hair boy short a decade ago - other women were downright jealous. Hell, I'm jealous of my past self. Your average guy has no idea how easy he has it with a wash & go hairstyle and being allowed to have body hair. Maintaining a feminine appearance is so time-consuming & boring it's insane.

Women supported me not because "HAHA SHE ISN'T MY COMPETITION NOW" (I was never most friends' competition, they either had boyfriends or we had different types), they just didn't want us women to be treated like shit based on appearance.

Are men projecting when they claim this BS? Y'all know men kill themselves at higher rates yet I hardly see men starting support groups for each other, just using that stat as a gotcha against women online to say men have it harder. Meanwhile women start projects supporting other women like crazy. Why don't men support each more?

No it isn't. The body positivity movement was started by fat women to primarily celebrate fat women and to try to social engineer society to see them as beautiful. It has since expanded but is still primarily by fat women for fat women.

Thin women either largely don't care and don't get involved or support it as one of the myriad of ways they like to virtue signal.

I know the narrative on this sub is that women are always competing and looking to one up one another and put each other down, but that simply doesn't seem to be reality. Women generally support each other and rally to each other's defense even when they are in the wrong.

Pet theory that virtue signaling occurs strictly in favor of non-threatening groups; groups that the actually privileged are not threatened by. Fat women being one. I dont think it’s a strategic method of gimping the competition, so much as it’s “you are so unthreatening to me I will advocate for you, because it makes me look benevolent and literally doesn’t matter.” Secondly, there would be no “black lives matter” if white men fetishized, chased, and married black women in alarming numbers. White women would never advocate for that.

This is too conspiratorial of a take, and doesn't accomplish its goal... so it is NOT a way for healthy women to reduce female competition since it accomplishes nothing.

There are no women that actually believe the body positivity movement has done anything to alter the perception of obese women, obese women included. Obese women know that they are undesired by all but a sliver of the male population with that particular fetish... it doesn't matter how many hippos you throw in Sports Illustrated.
No man has altered his perception of obese women because of the body positivity movement, he either likes them or he doesn't.
There are no healthy women that ease into obesity and feel better about it because of the body positivity movement. They always feel horrible and stressed out.

All it has done is make being overtly insulting to fat people somewhat taboo if done in public, which I agree with somewhat. I am not sure negative reinforcement works all that well for most people, so let them suffer in peace I guess.

The “Body Positivity” movement has also been co-opted by women to:

pressure, guilt and shame men into accepting their not attractive bodies as a whole or parts of their body - usually caused by age, poor health, lack of exercise/fitness or just being lazy or making many poor choices.
