Well, you don't need to make friends. Obviously it helps, having friends will boost your social skills which in turn helps your ability to attract women. As for the dating apps, don't worry too much about that mate, with the way those algorithms work, once they decide you're don't have a "good" profile, you're pretty much fucked.

Where to start? start from the beginning man, practice starting conversations with strangers in very basic ways and there's many ways to do that, even something as simple as walking up and asking someone where they got their shoes is valuable practice. I know you might feel shy, but force yourself to approach people, you don't have to flirt just yet so there's no pressure to get them to like you. I don't know how old you are, but it's never too late to improve your social skills. As for finding friends there's many places to do that, what do you like doing? I guarantee you there's a community for it, go online, talk to these people, find places where people do this and you'll make friends

After skimming through the comments, it sounds like a classic case of “I can’t catch a break man.” I feel bad for you having a less than ideal situation. Many of us do. The reality though is that the things in life worth having, are valuable because they don’t typically fall into your lap. I see a lot of people trying to come up with solutions that you immediately shot down. No one can change your life but yourself, and that starts with your mentality. Being stuck in a small town with elderly grandparents to take care of in a first world country is not a horrible situation. If you’ve already convinced yourself that “nothing works” then nothing anyone says will be good advice for you. Take control of your life and make it work. No one else can make it work for you.

Okay hard truth based on how you’re replying, OP. You’re shouting down a lot of suggestions by saying some variation of “I can’t do that” or “that won’t work” based on some external factor to you as a person. You also said therapy isn’t working and you aren’t sure if you want to live that long. You sound depressed which means you need therapy & maybe medication. This solution starts within YOU. Even if you won the lottery & could move you/grandparents to some huge city, you’d still feel depressed & disconnected.

Let’s start with therapy - some people don’t realize that you could set goals with your therapist. It sounds like your goals are … improve your overall mental health (depression and anxiety), reduce social anxiety, and build tools/ strategies that will help you form & keep lasting relationships. It also sounds like you may be a caregiver so part of your mental health treatment needs to address what you need to continue caregiving successfully. You can invite the therapist to tell you when you’re having cognitive dissonance or make suggestions. I ask my therapist to challenge me on items I need to work on … but then again, I have been with the same therapist for almost 5 years now so you may not be there.

Once you start feeling better internally, then you need to figure out what you like to do outside of work. Do you have meaningful hobbies? If not, find some hobbies dude. Those hobbies are going to be a reason to connect to others. Maybe join a club at a nearby city, online, or start a club! If you don’t have hobbies or have too much anxiety to get out, see step 1 about therapy.

Finally, you keep saying there’s nothing in your town. In a town of 50,000 — are you saying everyone else just works and stays home? Are you saying no one leaves their home? Is there a bar? Library? City hall? If so, you can volunteer for local/city events or join a local rotary. Most small towns have some type of local events. If it doesn’t yet exist, you can create it. If you lack the self-confidence to attend things locally, see step 1 about therapy.

You have a big choice here — you can change your life & make it meaningful or you can quit trying to improve your life. If you quit, then make the best of your life and be happy as-is. If you choose to change then focus on making your life meaningful, the friendships and relationships stem from that.

So much of what ails guys here, results from imbalances that come from not having a balanced life, including regularly socializing with friends.

Wanting to text too much.
Relying on the girl too much.
Oversharing.
Neediness in general.

These issues can slowly fade if one has a good support network.

And it just so happens that making friends has a lot of crossover with dating. Guys who get friendzoned often had everything except the confidence to physically escalate.

The baby steps here are making friends and getting comfortable meeting strangers. Go to social meetups to do this. Normalize meeting new people and then it won't be this huge deal when you see a girl you want to talk to.

I work from home so it has become difficult to be social over the years as my friends moved away or got into marriages etc., I definitely understand what you mean. The things that have helped me overcome that are around joining social groups that cater to my interests. I joined a club revolving around my sports team that does a lot of social stuff, I joined a jogging group via a local facebook group, got into a mixed grid iron team too. The groups you would possibly get into are specific to you but you'd be amazed how welcoming a lot of communities are. The rest regarding meeting women would follow naturally and you may just have something in common with them.

Start by going to a local coffee shop, when I moved to a new city I knew no one.I suffer with major anxiety, but I found a local coffee shop I love to go to now, they were very welcoming from day one. I can turn up now and they know my order, now I have no issues going. Next stage was to go to new places, I asked the cafe staff their recommendations.

Start little steps, a gf will not cure you, in fact will make it worse as all your insecurities will come out. But once you start doing this and eventually meeting people you can talk about where you go out or even a new hobby you've found etc etc.

In my experience girls find it attractive when a guy has friends and spends time with them, both in the initial phase and during the relationship as well, it works kinda as a social proof ensuring that a guy is a good catch. Even though it may sound as if getting some male friends first is an extra overhead, it will be worth it in a long run.

Hey OP, after skimming through the comments it sounds like you've got way more problems than dating/friendship. This is not something that strangers on the internet can fix. None of us know you and all the details to your problems.

The way I see it, you can continue to let life toss you around or you can take some control. You've got grandparents to take care of, well that is an admirable quality and many women will find that attractive. And you're 6'1" with a good job. These are all attractive.

Go to therapy. Join the gym. Take a trip when your family situations allow. Try some drugs (do your own research some are safer than others). Life is short and you gotta experience some of it. That's where a lot of the joy comes from.

Best advice i got on this matter is just to move on and forget social life at all. I was lucky enough that in college the women i would go after didnt already put me in jail when i said, on whatsapp: "penis vagina". If your main game is online dating, 80% of your success comes down to your aesthetics and picture quality and is independent of any other social life you may or may not lead.

You can’t control your genetics but you can control your fitness, fashion, and photo quality. Any average guy can at least go from a 4 to an 8 just by getting shredded, getting some style, and getting the best pictures possible taken/edited. None of this is particularly difficult but it does take time, work, and experimentation.

If you can crack all that, learn a basic repeatable sequence, spam enough volume and don’t get bothered by flakes, then results will come. You don’t need tons of friends or a super active party life either, but you obviously do need basic social skills for once you have a girl in person with you.

Source: I did it and so can you; it took me 2-3 years to get all the pieces to click. Throughout the pandemic pretty much 90%+ of my social life was just girls I downloaded from Tinder. I have friends but I rarely hang out with them in person and it makes no difference either way.

You don't need much friends, only 1 or 2 people that are solid. It's actually quite a good starting ground in my opinion. Once you make one or two friends, don't reveal any secrets, and reciprocate kindness. Join some events/organizations near you, and start socializing.

I have probably 3 solid friends, and the rest I designate as 'associates'.

Focus on self-improvement, join organizations to make friends (similar hobbies) hopefully, and start hitting up the clubs/bars, and get some experience in.

You could even start trying to build your social skills or make new friends by literally going to a bar with the intention of having fun. A lot of possibilites my friend.
