When you look at the normal distribution for intellect, there are more men at the extreme ends compared to women, meaning there are more men with high top percentile IQ than women.

In these intellectual based competitions men would dominate

Edit: personally don't see a problem. The primary reason for competitions and sports is entertainment, when competitions are segregated the women's league usually loses money, and the only way they survive is by funnelling money from somewhere else like how the NBA pays to keep WNBA alive, or by holding women's competition at the same time as the mens, like how many MMA organizations hold WMMA fights along with mens MMA.

No one wants to see women compete, it's not entertaining.

We gender split in brain competions since brain structure is influenced by gender, and men's trends more towards variability than women's.

Both the dumbest and smartest people, is most categories you could center a game around, are largely men. And the fact that men occupy so much of the top end means that if you didn't gender split the competitions, women would almost never win them. Which would be very discouraging.

Biological equality is a myth.

I believe the division of gender in things like chess, math, spelling bees, science-based competitions etc. should be stopped as mental agility is on equal grounds and female,male, and all members in the LGBTQ2S+ have equal chance in being victorious.

While with the average man and women there isn't any difference at the top end there is.

In chess they separate it as the top female chess players never win anything as the top men are better.

It's an interesting issue. Same goes for videogames/esports. Technically there should be no gender division, yet males tend to dominate the higher ranks. It could be because videogames were male-dominated throughout most of their history, that girls who played were often discouraged by harassment and creepy behavior, or that guys do have some advantage in things like reaction time / strategic thinking. In reality it's probably a combination of factors.

No, men and women do not have the same cognitive capabilities. Men tend to dominate the higher and lower ends in regards to IQ. Women just have less variance in their score distributions. That is why you see more men who are billionaires or in mentally challenging fields than women.

Men and women are both allowed to compete in chess.. You know how many women made it into the top 100? It’s 1… If we don’t segregate men and women we will rarely see women represented..

I think that we should keep female-only tournaments for the sake of science. Currently men outnumber women in chess, so promoting chess among women might give us biggest sample to study the reasons for different performance. Success in chess is not only related to raw intelligence - there are more personality traits involved, including being risk averse, different patterns of performance change with age etc. Lefties obviously have brain-dead answer of 'sexism' to everything, but study shows there is much more going on.

In certain competitions if there is not a gender split then either not enough women are incentivized into getting into that activity because the men are already too dominant, or the women are actively disincentivized from becoming part of that activity, such as online harassment in competitive video gaming.

Umm, maybe I'm a bit lost here, but unless it's a physical sport, competitions are unisex.

Unless you're looking at competitions sponsored by a single-gender organization (say, Boys' Scouts from years ago, and Girls' Scouts), where it makes sense the competitors would mainly be of one gender.

However, for a case to disagree, even brain development for children start to differ as they enter puberty, so even a factor like "brain power" can be considered gendered.

I also feel this is important in caring - based choices. As in, when I visited several early childhood education centers to decide where to enroll my kids, I chose one that had some male teachers. When we paid for private elementary school, we chose one that had some male teachers (ok only 15% but better than others). I wanted my son and daughter to both have the experience that men can be valuable child minders/ teachers.

I adored my kids' teachers, male and female. I'm glad they had the experience of both.

I trust that in each case the organisers of the particular thinking based sport or activity have actually thought it through both separately and in the groups they make decisions in and decided to do the thing they feel is best for their particular situation. It's only really your business for those particular events you've got an active part in organising...and is a discussion you will need to have with the other organisers.

I competed against guys in all of those things minus chess as a middle and high schooler (never cared for chess). Yes girls regularly won/ranked, including me.

I don't think gender segregation in academic competitions is nearly as prevalent as you think, at least in the U.S. Scripps National Spelling Bee is absolutely coed for example.

In League there was this all-women E-sport team called Vaevictis. They might offer an interesting read on the subject. The short of it was that they were clowned on so bad in their games that one of their opponent teams was penalised for bullying. Then eventually they got disqualified becouse every team gaped them in performance.

To awnser your question: men and women are not just differentl phisically, our psychology is also quite different. There are things one sex will be inherently better at than the other. A good example would be visual arts, women have a better affinity for color use for an example. Now, that does not mean that every member of one sex will outperform every member of the other in a certain thing but generally they will be better at it. In the case of E-sport like League it's pretty easy to guess why most players but more importantly the top players are all men. It's a team-oriented strategy game that requires high levels of micro-management, quick decision making and good straight-forward communication betwen teamates. Things men have more of an affinity for by nature. That does not mean it's impossible for women to be good at it, it means that reaching the highest ceilling will be significantly harder than for men. Even for men reaching those levels comes with an inhumane routine. So naturally it's male-dominated.

Now would it make sense to create a women's league? I don't think so. I don't think there is enough interest from female atheletes to justify it. By that I mean there are not enough female athletes for this specific thing. If there were then absolutely.

This could lead to some very unflattering realizations about differences in intelligence between the sexes. People like to use that outdated bell curve graph to conclude there's more male idiots and eggheads, which everyone finds fair and inoffensive. If we ever made a new bellcurve based on current data, or made chess championships co-ed, the results would have to be censored. And we all know why.

I’m a woman, but I do believe males tend to be more linear-thinkers who hobby the “mechanics of things.”

And females tend to be more holistic-thinkers who hobby the “mechanics of connection.”

So in “competitions” of “creating things” I expect to see more male winners than female winners; and in “competitions” of “deducing connections” I expect to see more female winners than male winners.

The problem is that Women tend to tire/exhaust much quicker than men do due to there bodies not being built for prolonged physical labor/continued physical exertion and there are multiple organs that require extensive amounts of energy just to function.

One of the organs that take up the most energy is the Human Brain i'm pretty sure the World's best Female Chess player publicly stated that she couldn't beat the worlds best Male chess player however she would still eradicate the average male chess player but beyond that the victor of any type of intellectual based Competition will always be a Male (either that or a woman will luck out and win.) whilst the women will never have a fair chance due to going up against someone biologically superior.

Similar to how Cars function, you can't beat a Dodge charger with a Honda civic in a race no matter what you do you'll always lose.

However I see no reason with letting Gays/Lesbians and TransMen/Women compete in there respective heterosexual areas.

In pragmatic sense gender splitting is done to encourage participation of the females. You can argue the cause of low participation to be discrimination, social pressure, gender preference, social taboo/stigma or even a controversial biological one but the end result is positive: you get more girls to participate, their general skill level improve and will hopefully catch up to the best in the future.

AFAIK most top league (even in sports where biology/anatomy plays a huge role) are open (e.g. females are not forbidden to participate). It's female only league that restrict male participation (hence some controversy when MtF trans athlete topic comes up). The purpose of gender splitting is to keep men out of the women league, not to keep women out of the top league.

If a woman is good enough to compete with the best of the best(including men), there should be enough motivation for that woman to enter general competition. Top league generally pays better, gives you more fame and prestige than female only competition.

As many have said, the bell curve distribution for IQ for men and women is different. But even if you do not believe in that, testosterone (which men have more of) can have a lot of beneficial effects on the brain that will give men the advantage over women when it comes to competing in many professions. Testosterone is known to: decrease pain and discomfort, & increase ambition, determination, motivation, competitiveness and focus. This gives men a huge leg up on women at the top.

The New York Philharmonic orchestra for example tried doing gender blind auditions many years. But every time they did, the result was only men were recruited because they were simply better--why is that? Let's say there was a man and women and both were playing the same instrument and of equal intelligence. After a 10 hour straight practice session, who is more likely to continue? The man or the woman? If you look at all the beneficial effects testosterone can have, the man is much more likely to continue. Even if a woman was higher intelligence and skill in a subject, the man would simply outwork here every time because of testosterone.

And if you don't believe in the effects of testosterone, the man doesn't have to menstruate or have the same level of responsibilities when it comes to childcare. Men and women have different bodies and are simply different and it is okay. Stop comparing them and making it a contest or about LGBTQIA acceptance.

I say we just do away with all of this bullshit for every competition. I’ve seen multiple trans activists telling me there’s no difference when a man decides they’re a woman and gets to play in the women’s league. Fine, get rid of all gender distinctions in competition and let the chips fall where they may.

Women want to be treated like equals and get the same access and treatment as men? Fine, treat them like equals and let them compete with the men.

We should stop gender splitting in competitions at all.

If trans women competing in female leagues is such a problem maybe it's time to remind people that female leagues were a privilege. We shouldn't care about a minority of people who can't make a living off competition when they're not even near the top of said competition.
