I’d be okay with using a donor’s egg if I had some serious inheritable diseases. If it’s just my appearance that he doesn’t like, I wouldn’t be okay with it - this level of neuroticism about future kid’s appearance isn’t something I can relate to.

I might be interested in adoption, but if I have to get pregnant and go through birth and all, I want the kid to have my DNA and remind me of my family members as well. As long as I don’t have something really bad to pass of course.

For one, the process that you're describing isn't as simple as just putting a fertilised embryo in a turkey baster, and putting it in the vagina. What you're describing is IVF. Even if you take the egg retrieval out of the equation, it's still harsh on the woman's body. She'd still have to take certain medications to prepare for the implantation, which can have nasty side effects. The actual implantation can be painful because they're forcing instruments through your cervix when it's tightly closed. There's also a high chance that the embryo won't take, leading to a miscarriage. To increase the chances of a successful implantation, multiple embryos are often used, but then, if they all take, you've either got the choice of terminating one or more of the embryos (and potentially causing a miscarriage of all of them) or going through with a pregnancy carrying multiples, which significantly increases the risk to both mother and babies.

If my partner was willing to risk mine and the baby's health all because of some physical attributes, he wouldn't be my partner anymore.

The above would also mean that he didn't really adore or cherish me. Someone who adores you wouldn't want to do anything that might put your life or health in danger.

No. I wouldn't even do it if I had heritable disease in my genes. In that case I just wouldn't have children, unless adopted. There are additional risks to the mother in carrying an unrelated fetus, there may also be risks to the baby from the IVF process. It's an unacceptable risk in an already risky process for me (pregnancy) when I'm not even going to end up with a child that's genetically mine.

If you don't want a woman's genetics in your child for non medical reasons then you shouldn't be planning a family with her.

No. Combining the genes from the two of us is a big appeal in having kids for me and my bf. If one of us can't have a biological kid we won't be using donor sperm/eggs (we'd asopt), because it would be heartbreaking for both of us for the other to make a baby basically with another person. The thought of making a baby with another man actively disgusts me.

But personally, I'd be okay with a surrogatw carrying our child. We haven't mentioned this yet but based on his other thoights, he would be too.

I think a good portion of the fun of making babies is to see the result of your combined love. I would actually be kinda disappointed if the kids only took after one parent and were not a mix of my couple. Many people use the baby face predictor cause they want to see the fruits of their love.

And also some of my opinion on this would be which characteristics of mine he didn’t like, and why he thinks his characteristics are so much better and more worthwhile of reproducing, it sounds like some kind eugenics, and likely racist. Since when can you isolate a height gene like that in an embryo? In specific cases, maybe, but height is determined by many environmental factors too. I'm not against the concept of a Gattaca baby. I agree with it to a certain extent, as I want to give my kid the best start in life possible. But... I don't want to carry another woman's eggs in me. That's simply not for me, though it may be for others. I'd rather not have a kid then.

Does he really cherish me if he's that concerned about my genes? How is he going to justify turning into a eugenicist like that? And to suggest taking another woman's eggs like that isn't an ethical dilemma in itself? Should we use a bigger and stronger man's sperm too while we're at it?

(Answering this in a hypothetical way sincd I dont want kids):

Probably wouldnt be ok w that since hed have a problem with my traits showing up in our kids. Like to me that signals he doesnt think Im attractive or at least doesnt think my body would contribute to making healthy children, which assumes a lot of arrogant and pseudoscientific bs about himself (he contributes half his genes so what makes him think hes so perfect and wouldnt pass down recessive or otherwise undesired traits to our kids?).

Also IVF is expensive and sex is so much easier. I would want to be pregant the 'old fashioned way'. Would prolly feel way more special than setting up doctors appointments.

And Id prolly want my children to be directly related to me if I wanted to be pregnant anyway instead of just adopting. Having an foreign egg implanted into my womb sounds rlly risky for me, as well. And him having a designer-baby mentality of having our children seems kinda weird and like conditional-love, to me.

Edit: idk how i missed the last sentence but no it wouldnt be my child biologically. If im going thru pregnancy four our family Id rather not be a surrogate for someone elses kid since the egg didnt come from me and thus doesnt have my DNA. Itll be related to another woman. This is an interesting one. Tbf. One of the reasons I decided against children was because of my bloodline. My ancestors are horrible. Alcoholism runs in both sides of my family. I'm the last one of this line because my brother has a different father and yet he has mental issues and also decided against kids.

Not having kids was one of the first things I told my husband when we started dating so he could decide if he is okay with not having children (his two sisters are going hard for kids. One has 5 kids the other just popped her second). He was fine with that.

So if I actually wanted children it wouldn't be my own anyway. My bloodline needs to end with me. But if I actually wanted some - I wouldn't be against getting an egg from someone with a better family history. Someone with better genetics. Yes this is eugenics. Yes. Some people find it weird. I would prefer to give my children the best possible way to survive in today world and with as little as possible obstacles in their way. So I would be up for that.

Edit: I talked with my husband about this and he said "absolutely fucking not". So he is more on the majority of the women's side in this thread. He says it is creepy and narcissistic to trying to engineer a perfect baby. He says when it comes foe instance to the alcoholism or other negative traits it would be more taught behaviour than genetics and the generational trauma might persist. He also says that people that want to have designer babies might do it for the wrong reasons ala "wanting a 6'5 son so he can become a footballer and pay for their livelihood or something." He also said it would absolutely leave a crack in the relationship if one person would just say "i dont want your genes" and the child might get some negativity based on that crack. So yeah. He does not agree with the eugenics while I would be more open to it 🤷‍♀️
