Women could inherit land, sign a lease, and travel without a male escort. Women could sign up for a credit card and a bank account before 1974. At least in the U.S.

These are commonly repeated in this way for the purpose of being misinterpreted.

Women could own and inherit land. When a woman got married, she and her husband became a single legal entity. Everything they owned was owned by both of them once they married.

I’m not sure what the escort thing is… maybe in some other countries or some distant time in the past women weren’t allowed to travel without a male escort in certain situations. This wasn’t a thing in the U.S.

A married woman signing a lease or opening a line of credit would require her husband’s signature because they were, like I said, a single entity, but her husband would be responsible for paying off any debt she incurred. He could be imprisoned if he couldn’t afford to pay. She wouldn’t be held liable. He also legally had to support her financially for life.

People always leave out the fact that single women could own property, businesses, sign leases, open bank accounts, credit cards, etc as single women. Just like married women could do those things, only she had to do them as a married woman.

Banks could deny a married woman from opening a bank account without her husband’s signature. They also could approve it and open one for her if they wanted. Sometimes they didn’t. Probably because it seemed shady to be trying to open a second bank account separately from your husband as a married woman.

Credit cards required his signature since they were a single entity and because he was responsible for paying it off.

Single women might have needed a co-signer to take out credit or sign a lease. It was no different for men. They still ask for a co-signer today for loans so it’s not really a woman’s oppression thing.

Laws changed in 1974 to make it illegal for banks to discriminate against women for being married. It wasn’t that they couldn’t get credit cards, it was that banks could deny them to married women who applied without a signature from her husband when he was the one working.

It’s all dishonest framing to make men feel guilty or inherently bad or something. It’s bizarre.

My entire point is these talking points leave out a very important piece of information and it also happens to be what their argument relies on. They are referring to MARRIED women who have gone from a single legal identity as an individual to a single entity as a married couple.

Single women could own property, sign contracts, own a business, buy stocks, take out loans, open bank accounts, sign a lease, etc without a husband or a man’s permission because she didn’t legally combine her identity with another person’s, which obviously created the need for both parties consent to make large financial decisions or sign contracts that held the other liable.

I immediately think of the 90%+ employment rates amongst fathers in the UK. IIRC single men are around 80%, single women slightly below them, and mothers way below them. Men are indispensable to the economy, and there is an enormous amount of research saying our presence in families hugely improves them too.

The left wing critique here should be that women are struggling with the expectation that they ought to be equals, and often find doubling down on femininity (and gatekeeping in the home) easier than seeing us as people.

The article almost reaches a good conclusion. Pretty illuminating in an unintentional way.

It starts with the obvious thing that society isn't forcing people into relationships anymore, meaning people have to like each other to be in one. The author is shocked with her experience of one man liking positive attention from her one time, and how she and a group of other women in the comments struggled to understand this strange phenomenon. Then she indulges in some "making fun of men who act like princesses" (hilarious).

The conclusion from this:

First, it's pretty obvious that men don't have a problem with being wanted, they have a problem with not being wanted.

Most importantly, it seems apparent a lot of women have been raised with such an idea of men being strong and independent that they cannot imagine they want anything other than either provide "chivalry" or, at worst, just disinterest. The idea that they actually want to receive positive attention from a relationship is genuinely novel to them.

Some people might claim 'cope' in response to this, but I genuinely think most of these articles are written as a coping mechanism for women who are single / struggling with dating—while also strategically positioning something that makes for good engagement (i.e., nothing better than rage bait gender war slop).

I literally looked at her IG and saw a post referring to this article, and literally three women I know liked it (they're all in their 30s, single, and at least two I know have had bad breakups)—not that there's anything inherently wrong with being single in your 30s.

It's just a coping mechanism to distract from accepting the reality of price discovery (especially one that's already heavily leveraged in women's favor). Convince themselves that almost all men are beneath them and genuinely believe that their standards are truly calibrated with market reality.

I think the author is observing a real phenomenon, but the framing is uncharitable to men.

She's absolutely right that in the past, the standards for a man to be considered relationship-worthy were significantly lower. If he had a steady income, wasn't violent, and wasn't an alcoholic, he was a pretty good catch. Feminism has made women significantly more independent than they used to be, meaning the bar that men have to clear is significantly higher than it used to be, and men are still in the process of adapting to that change.

On the other hand, women have had thousands of years to figure out what appeals to men, and to develop tools and techniques to optimize for it. And men provide plenty of feedback on whether their efforts are successful or not. Men have only had decades to catch up, and quite a lot of women still actively hide their interest, either because they enjoy the feeling of being chased, or because they are afraid of being slut shamed. It's ludicrous to expect men to close the gap that quickly, given the size of the head start that women had, and how much women actively impede those efforts.

On the subject of men liking tasks, it isn't that complicated if you see men as humans. Humans like it when they put a little extra effort into their performance and that extra effort is appreciated. They don't like it when someone feels entitled to that level of effort as a baseline, there is not appreciation for that effort, and they are punished if they ever fail to meet that level.

Men's performance is usefulness, women's performance is attractiveness. Women like it when they dress up for a special occasion and people tell them they look pretty. They don't like it when people tell them they look like shit for not dressing up. Men like it when you appreciate them moving a heavy thing. They don't like it when they're yelled at for not moving a heavy thing. It's not rocket science, it's just seeing people as human.

Well that headline is a relatively hostile take on a relatively real concept.

The concept being that men have little sense of being "desired" so we have to feel useful in a way that a woman can't fulfill herself, or else we fear abandonment.

It would be a nice moment of vulnerability and discussing insecurities in an actual open and empathetic way, and assessing how society views men as the "undesirable gender".

But instead, we end up with articles like "Are men even necessary? Why do we even keep them around?!" Like we're some experimental offshoot of humans and not humans ourselves, because that's more clickbaity and exploits this insecurity rather than addressing it.

This is another one of examples of misandry that you will find riddled across social media. It's similar to this response against "if men disappeared from the world, who would protect women?" of "protect from who". It's effectively trying to downplay the countless efforts and sacrifices that men are currently making to maintain a higher quality of life for women.

The reality is that women, in virtually every society that exists today, are absolutely dependent on men doing most of the infrastructural labor, protection, provision and pursuing. They experience a much higher quality of life, overall and on average, because of it.

Women get to live in a world where men take, and are expected to take, the primary brunt of responsibilities and hardships of life and society. More women get to live better lives at the expense of men's efforts and suffering. Women collect more taxes than they spend. Women are subsidized by men in virtually every aspect and stage of their lives.

If all men disappeared from this earth today, everything would change for women. They would need to start taking on all the tough and dirty jobs. They would have to learn how to properly pursue each other, without the benefit of gender roles and systematic entitlements. They would have to start taking on the same burdens of protection and provision that they normally expect to take, which would also mean that crimes rates among women would skyrocket. Entirely new hierarchies and forms of discrimination would emerge among women(with tall/ugly women likely having to take on the roles that men have historically been expected to take). Depression among women would skyrocket as well.

I genuinely think some of these people (the author of this piece included) are what I used to call professional trolls. Or more likely, they're grifters in the same vein as Andrew Tate or those like him.

They see a market--disaffected, aggrieved and hate-filled men and women--and they excrete content molded to validate the worst impulses and thoughts of these people.

Which of course brings them plenty of engagement, and thus material gain or at the very least psychological validation.

It isn't to excuse it or pretend the problem is less than it is---but I feel like the bigger issue that needs looking at is the fact that these provscatuers have such a big following. If there wasn't a market for them, they'd wither or at leat change their tactics.

Highly debatable but even if it's true, it cuts both ways. Do men need women? I would say no. We're programmed to want them but we don't need them. In fact I'm tempted to say that any healthy relationship should have no need and only want anyway.

As AI becomes more advanced I think men turn away from relationships anyway - more emotional gratification will be available via that than each other in the end. Not good for the species but ultimately not the problem of the individual.

EDIT - this article isn't as bad as the title makes it sound by the way. It even calls out misandristic tendencies that current female thinking has about men. I still think the point either way though is that yes, women don't need men (from a relationship standpoint, which seems to be her angle) but then neither do men need women.

So for the conclusion yes men need to be reminded of their worth. Obviously being needed only for tasks would just feel unfulfilling. But at the same point, unless close, I don't really see a whole lot of women going out of their way to remind men of their worth. It's kind of like compliments. Women get them all the time, but men will exactly remember the last time they were complimented, because they come so far and few between.

There is a difference between "need" and "want" in my eyes, for example, a want is something you desire to own, like a car, or a house or that game you've been saving for, but a need is different because some you need to survive on, for example, you need water, food, oxygen, companionship, shelter to survive. So if you say you want a man, you never viewed a man as a human being, but as an object, you can't want another human being because that would be slavery

well, she is right. women don't need men, for almost anything. some men will struggle to accept this, but they better accept it.

science and technology advanced to the point that an average healthy, mentally well-adjusted person can easily operate on its own, and they do not need anyone as such to live fine. our society is pretty much optimized to the point that we can easily live well, alone, without any social relationship, like at all.

scientific and technological advancement has always driven the society and always affected the social systems of those said societies. feminism, for all its worth, largely benefitted from these advancements. without it, it would have struggled a lot actually.

gender separation could be very well a reality in next century. we could finally be seeing a evolution of traditional relationship systems, where it will no longer resemble like it is right now.

rise of manosphere, ideological hatred in between men and women, society which is now increasingly more lonely, anti-natalist, anti-relationship, anti-monogamy.... this is just a glimpse of future. i mean dating apps alone inflicted a huge damage to dating and relationships prospect between men and women.

I've just recently come across this sub as a feminist and I just kinda read and see what y'all are saying. As I'm reading this article, I honestly don't see what the real problem is. Relationships today, if ppl aren't completely checked out, have to have 2 ppl who actively choose each other. When I talk to women, I talk about getting your education and career together FIRST. I want women to be self sufficient and be able to thrive regardless of relationships.

To say y'all aren't needed isn't really an insult, it's just many of us have left the desperation behind. Relationships have to be mutually beneficial. If y'all want relationships with women, why does it seem like you have no urge to hear what women are saying?
