I’ve always been curious about this topic. While the concept seems unimaginable to us born and bred Americans, I think it’s also fair to say that with a 40-50% divorce rate, our way might not be exactly #winning either.

One of my friends from childhood had an arranged marriage. She’s Indian, and married the son of family friend. So they kind of grew up together and my understanding was they wanted to marry each other as opposed to it being a situation where she was set up with a stranger. I haven’t seen her much outside of Facebook since high school but from what I understand they’re still together and still happy.

So, those of you who may be in arranged marriages or come from cultures where it’s more common, I’d love to hear your perspectives.

  • how does it work? Do you get a say in who you marry?

  • do you think the practice has benefits? Any drawbacks?

  • how does it compare in your view with western views on marriage for love?

Others can answer the questions too, I’m just really interested in hearing from people who’ve experienced it.
