When I was in my 20s I dated someone who tried to pull this shit. We’d been together for a few years when he decided to move to another country indefinitely (without me) because he was depressed and suicidal. He was incredibly manipulative but I think back to him saying “I was going to propose to you at the top of the Eiffel Tower one day” all I can do is laugh at how naive I must have been to be with him in the first place but also how lazy and trite a sentiment this was.

Ok this isn't about a ring. I kept asking my NVX that the £150 a month he was giving me wasn't enough and that with childcare,nappies,food etc that the amount doesn't even cover a week of childcare. He upped it to £200 a month after 6 months of nagging. He kept saying he couldn't afford it (we didn't live together because he got a promotion when I was 3 monthly pregnant and moved 4 hours away) but every weekend he came down he'd spend 100's of ££ on stuff for the baby, filling the fridge, eating out etc.

I started thinking, how is he affording this if his salary is what he told me it was. Well fast forward two years , I've dumped him and he stops buying extra when he comes to visit his child. I ask him for more money, still comes out with he can't afford it. My cousin told me just go through child maintenance and then at least you'll get what they say he can afford.....well what happened when I put the application in ? He started calling, shouting telling me I have to cancel the application. I told him no and he's had plenty of time to work this out.

The application goes though and he has to pay just shy of £500 a month ....cue the I can't afford this and how he has so much to pay for and now he can't continue to invest in a fund for our daughter. Investment!! What investment? We were at dinner with his friends and they asked us if we have Savings for our daughter...I said yes, he said no (I set up a savings account before she was born) I got hell after that dinner because I embarrassed him 🙄 me! How did I embarrass him.

So now you have to pay double what you previously were you all of a sudden have Savings and investment for out daughter,but a few months before you had nothing 😂🤣

It happened to my friends a few times and myself once. The guy strings you along for the 1st, 2nd, and maybe even a 3rd actual nice date. Then he will ask you to some walk /hangout/ or to come over for his roommates party to their house at the last minute and it won't be romantic and will seem like more of something he would just ask a bro. So you say you can't go. Then he hits you with the "well I saved you a seat i was gonna ask you to be my girlfriend and have you meet my bros tonight they're all here"

There is only one relationship that I know of that lead to marriage after 10 years together (the couple met in their early 20s, no they were not teens). I worked with the guy and I thought he was gay, so did many other people in our workplace. Even in one of our first conversations together he said “I’m not gay I know everyone thinks that.” While I don’t necessarily believe in stereotyping people, I do think that a possible reason for him not committing after all that time may have been due to him struggling with his sexuality 🤷‍♀️
