Is her degree just as valid as everyone else's? Yes. Is her degree as valuable as everyone else's? No.

"Oh, so you want to be a professor? You and everyone else with an English, History or Gender Studies degree. Good luck."
[–]PartialChub37 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Lots of people with those degree plans on going to grad school after finishing them. I don't really get the hatred all around reddit for an English or History degree as long as you have some kind of plan. I got a history degree because I enjoyed the subject and knew that it would not be difficult for me to maintain a strong gpa, which got me into grad school just like I needed it to.

Grad school for what?
[–]nobody200023 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Can't speak for OP, but with few exceptions, you can get into Grad School no matter your undergrad major.
Want your MBA? Don't worry about having zero business background. All you need is calc.
Want to go to Med School? You don't need a bio/chem degree. Make sure you have 16 credits of Bio and 16 credits of Chem (maybe some physics too).
Want to go to law school? Take your LSAT.
Ph.D/research Masters will differ depending on the discipline.

You're right except for engineering and physical sciences. If you want a PhD in comp sci, mechanical engineering, or chemistry, you'd better have (or get) an undergrad degree in the same field, first.
[–]MrSparkle6662 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I know people who have gone on to get graduate degrees in science and engineering who's undergrad degrees were in completely different disciplines, but it's very very hard. You basically have to take so many bridge courses that it's almost easier to just go back and get a second bachelor's degree.
[–]Lawtonfogle1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No, they just have to show knowledge of the field. Math into com. sci. or vice versa is quite common. Others into com. sci. happens quite a bit as well, if they know the fundamentals.
Also, com. sci. will get you into most any field if you have great grades and have a decent understanding of the related field. There is almost always some computer based cross over with other fields.
[–]MechPlasma1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Computer Science is the exception. Simply because you can find pretty much always find a use for informatics in any subject. Even with Women's Studies, you could probably do a thesis on something like a program to create an analysis how often women face abuse on the internet, or something like that.

Good luck getting into stem grad school with no stem undergrad. And while what you say is true, it is much easier to pursue a chem/bio degree before med school because you don't have to worry about getting your pre med reqs done, on top of your major reqs. Plus you get exposure to many things you will see in your first two years of medical school. I have no experience with law school, but I would assume that what you do out of school matters faaar more than what degree you graduated with
[–]el_picaro5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
One of my roommates in medical school got in with a bachelor's in History. It's from Harvard, so that probably had a lot to do with it besides completing the pre-req's.
[–]KittiesHavingSex2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Oh yeah, med schools actually prefer that. It is just that it was more difficult for him :)
[–]trentshipp3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Actually, the degree with the highest acceptance rate into med school is Music. On my phone, I'll try to dig up the source when I get home.
I believe it. I know quite a few. It is important to note "rate", and not quantity
[–]trentshipp6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Of course, there aren't exactly droves of music school grads trying to get into med school :)
[–]OriginalEmanresu2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
From what I've heard (As someone who works for a Med School, but not in the admissions dept.) one of the most valuable degrees for applicants is Engineering.
I have no sources, its just one of those things that gets said a lot at the school I work for.
I guess it depends on where you live. In Ireland, everyone always says the same thing: Computer Science gets you jobs! There are an absolute load of well-paid jobs available right now. In my year, everyone in the class had a full-time job nailed down they even graduated!
...if you can actually get a degree, of course. Programming isn't easy.

Lots of college discussion going on here, I'll take the opportunity to ask...
After changing majors time after time I've run out of college-time and am now pursuing an applied linguistics degree with a minor in English.
What the shit do I do. Is the only option teaching EFL/ESL?
Or does anyone know a subreddit I can direct this question to? :/
[–]nobody200010 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Look at state grad schools (they're cheap!)
I graduated with a degree in Biology and Math. These are USELESS without grad school (ok not useless, but I didn't want to pursue a career in being a lab tech or a salesman, or something along the generic liberal arts line).
Luckily, I did have a passion for business, so I earned my MBA. My background made me perfect for Market Research.
So I assume that with your Applied Linguistics and your mention of EFL, you know another language?
This has wiped the fog off of a lot of windows into the future.
Thank you, nobody2000.
Good guess, by the way. I "know" 4 languages other than English, but only at first-grade levels. Becoming fluent in Mandarin was my next step, since that's the most globally popular language and the easiest for me to grasp. Peace Corps might be the right direction.
Dude, great advice!

In the early 1990s the neice of a friend, got a BA in linguistics at UCSD. When she tried to get a job, she was effectively unemployable. He [her uncle] asked me to look at her transscript. I found nothing that would suggest employability. Not a single quantitative course anywhere.
So, she goes to grad school. At a family gathering she brought a date. Turns out he's a PhD candidate in linguistics. He tells the story that as a condition for admitance to the PhD program, his first quarter he [the PhD candidate] was required to take a 200 level quantitative linguistics course. So, he says, here he was sitting in a class of about 30 getting his ass kicked (academically speaking) by undergrad comp sci majors. -- Designing programming languages that are acutally usable (read: compilable) is not easy. Parsing text for semantic content is not as easy as it looks. The techniques are based on finite state automata. The formal grammar for most (all that I know of ...) is called Backus-Naur Form. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backus%E2%80%93Naur_Form
In anycase, he got through the course but it left a mark on him.
So, no. A degree in womens studies, history, english or most any liberal arts is not "just as valid" as a STEM or applied technology degree. (JMHO).
In the end, the lady in question dropped out of graduate school and last I heard she went to work for her uncle's business.

It's the whole lie that society feeds young people to "follow their dreams" and "don't be afraid to explore" bullshit. Mostly, it is personified in kids who don't have to work or pay for their education, as their parents pay for everything. I love the arts, minored in music and philosophy. But when people ask me why I "sold out" and majored in bio, I just laugh at them.
Eng, History, Humanities majors are fine. But you should know that those are purely academic careers. You have to do research and publish articles because they are theoretical careers and are not economically valuable. That is exactly why university positions exist; they don't earn any money for anyone in the real world.
[–]woodchopperak2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Biologist here, specializing in botany/ecology. Why is majoring in biology selling out? There is nothing more beautiful than trying to understand the life on this earth in all its forms. However unless one uses that biology degree to become a doctor there's not a lot of money in it. But that's okay with me.
Just a note. You should remember that many of our applicable ideas in the "real" world (I hate when people use this term) come from academia. Ideas about genetics, political policy, sexual harassment guidelines, etc.. Academia gave us that.
I am also a biologist lol. I even went to grad school.
I'm just giving the "view" of young people who think that studying abstract stuff is what "true learners" study lol
It must be sad to live in a world where understanding the human experience has no value.
Without social scientists, how do you believe we can have a better world? Stumbling blindly, ignorant of what people need and desire?
If biology is your passion, that's great. But do not denigrate those who dedicate their lives to making life worth living.
[–]mnhr1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You could look into the social sciences. Depending on your coursework grad school options may be available in archeology, anthropology, sociology, or communication studies.
Edit: Heck, with applied linguistics, it wouldn't be too far a stretch to work in animal languages / primatology.
[–]phantom_nosehair1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If you want a job consider technical training, for example worker training classes at a community college. You will have your thinking and writing skills from college plus a technical education. Way better than theoretical grad school if you are just looking for work. Worked for me. For example, you can take some programming classes, start working in the tech industry, perhaps in a company that has a linguistic slant. Speaking from personal experience. All my friends with multiple masters and PhDs are still looking for work.

[–]BedMonster1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Depends in part on where you went and what your network is like. Half the people I know working in technology or finance majored in completely unrelated fields in undergraduate. I'm talking sociology majors working for Google, Econ majors working for LinkedIn, and Spanish majors working for Deutsche Bank. Hell, even as an econ major all my finance internships told me my liberal arts Economics degree would be pretty useless in i-banking - since 95% of the necessary skills are taught on-the-job.
I'll concede however that these are folks coming out of a top 10 liberal arts school, so your mileage may vary. Getting those initial interviews where they distinguished themselves entirely depended on leveraging their networks.

Anyone eager to part with $40,000+ USD just so they can be preached at as to why and how men, and if you're in the U.S., white, middle-class men in particular, are the secret destroyers of the human race and the usurpers of a planet which rightly belongs to "womyn" should not be allowed to stray beyond the confines of the nearest psychiatric facility, let alone given a license to practice medicine or the law.
Not all degrees are valid. Bullshit with a university seal attached is still bullshit.
That being said, there's nothing wrong with a non-STEM degree, nor is there some kind of inherent failure involved with having no degree at all. If pottery or carpentry makes you happy, then don't let anyone pressure you into being a computer programmer or a mathematician! Just make sure you can feed yourself, your family, and so on.

Valid question. I knew that a lot of people plan on going to grad school, but I have no clue what for.
[–]PartialChub2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I entered undergrad knowing that I ultimately wanted to go to law school. Graduated with just a BA in history and then went and got the JD.
That's what I figured, but people in law school usually say "law school" instead of "grad school" so I got curious. But as you said, the only reason you got the degree is that it served as a good mean to an end. How can we have respect for a degree that not even people who major in it respect?
[–]PartialChub3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So many people ask in passing conversation that I typically just say grad school unless they inquire further. Odd habit I suppose. You make a fair point, but it's not that I don't respect the history degree. I have the utmost respect for the study of history. The research and writing skills I developed in undergrad were extremely valuable in law school, though the research and writing I did there was much different. I think it's fair to say I respect the degree exactly because, like you say, it can be used as a means to an end. Just because someone opts to take such a route in undergrad does not mean that they are going to work at McDonalds or Starbucks. I suppose that mentality is what irks me. It's true that relying on a degree like english of history alone might not be terribly wise, or might make finding a high-paying job more difficult, but some people are perfectly content doing so. If it makes them happy I see no reason to constantly put them down like so many on reddit tend to do.
I have a nice example in the form of an anecdote. One of my very closest friends is married to a woman who graduated from a small state school with a degree in sociology. A shit degree according to many reddit threads right? She worked for a couple of years for a law firm as a paralegal. She really applied herself during those years and just so happened to learn a good bit about medicare and medicaid. She always kept her eyes and ears open for other opportunities and just recently landed a position with a company as a director of its medicare services department. She lives in a area that has an extremely low cost of living and she was offered 130k yearly for the position. Five years out of undergrad with a soc degree. This is probably pretty rare, but it shows that tenacity and zeal can go a long way. I just hate the attitude I see so often here. The fact that not everyone wants a STEM degree seems to blow redditor's minds.
[–]KittiesHavingSex6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think it is less about the study itself, and more about the type of people that gravitate towards it. For every one truly passionate and hard working history major (like your friend) , there are 10 that are getting an easy degree in a field they kinda like and because their parents are expecting them to graduate college. No additional skill is truly acquired, tens of thousands of dollars are spent, and the overall "value" of a college degree falls. I think this is why most people seem to have a negative perception of non-stem majors.
Fair points all around. Good discussion.
Agreed!

Its not that there is hatred specifically for people who are English or History majors, the problem arises when people (in this case women) earn degrees in those fields, and then blame "the patriarchy", "female oppression," or "male privilege" when they aren't able to earn as much as people who have degrees in math, science, engineering, or accounting.
So, is this woman's degree as valid as any other? Yes. She satisfied all of the university's requirements to earn a bachelors degree. But is her degree as valuable as others? No. And that difference is NOT due to any of the common reasons that modern feminism usually points to.

[–]K8de1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Serious question and I'm not looking for trouble- Was that personal value worth the 50-100k you invested in it?
I went to college in the late 90s. That was sort of the beginning of the transition to where a college education didn't mean what it used to. When my siblings started in the mid 80s it was just assumed that if you get a college degree in anything you would be fine in the job market. By the time I finished things were changing. So, at the time the investment didnt achieve what it was supposed to- gaining entry into the workforce with a decent salary.
However, now the value of that investment is paying off financially- but only after I got some technical skills. Basically having only a 2 year technical degree, for instance, means that you can get work, maybe at many places, but that many places want the b.a. in anything before they would consider hiring. Since I have a 4 year degree plus a technical degree, that gets me into places that otherwise I wouldn't have.
As for personal value, absolutely. That doesn't mean I recommend going into $100k debt when you are 22, but there's many ways to squeeze a humanities type education into one's life and even spread the cost out over a longer time. I feel like I didn't come away with much from my public grade school education, but from my college education the meaning and value of my life has been enriched immeasurably.
Also, a 4 year college education is still a kind of class divider. I can sort of tell when someone doesn't have a college education. The kind of work and dedication involved to get one is a transformative experience, not socially so much, but intellectually. People with college educations for the most part know how to think better (critical thinking skills).
Well put. Thanks for answering my question.
[–]hnakhankhank42 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If she got her degree at an accredited university it came with general studies, math, and a lot of work proving at least that she has the dedication to finish a degree. I would hire her over a high school graduate.
[–]McFeely_Smackup27 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If I had to choose between hiring a person with no degree and someone with a Gender Studies one, the decision is heavily weighted AGAINST the Gender Studies.
A person without a degree is basically at ground zero.
A person with an utterly useless degree in nonsense has show both poor decision making skills AND a dedication to bullshit. That puts them well below the water line.
[–]OmegaDN28 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

[–]YHWH_The_Lord8 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What if I told you that someone with a bullshit degree has still taken a great deal of all-around-liberal-arts courses???
And how many of those "women's" courses were just simple history, poli sci, other courses not DIRECTLY focused on women, but provided history in context?
And how many non-women's studies majors took the bullshit women's courses? Maybe you should screen them out because they're also dumb, right?
Also - you're probably judging them on their decision making skills when they were 18. Yes you can change your major, but if you're already so deep, how many more years/student loans is it worth to change? I wanted to get into business when I was a senior, and not be a physician anymore. 3 years of Biology classes in, I decided that I don't need to do my undergrad for another 3 years (since the degrees are vastly different). I graduated with my Biology Degree.
And poor decision making skills??? A high schooler DECIDED NOT TO GO TO COLLEGE!!! That's all I need to hear.
I despise the girl's arrogance in the picture, but come on. If it came down to it, and you hired the HIGH SCHOOLER...I'd question YOUR decision making skills.
[–]McFeely_Smackup2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
If I'm hiring for a liberal arts position, that might weigh in her favor.
But consider that we're assuming the candidates have equal qualifications excepting that one is a high school graduate, and one has a Gender degree.
You know...assume that we're not idiots and are having a genuine conversation. can we assume that much?
[–]nobody2000-4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What is a "liberal arts position?" I think you just dated yourself here, and that date is some time AFTER 1995...
that's my point exactly. what IS a "liberal arts position"?
[–]nobody20000 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A liberal arts DEGREE is any degree where you might have an area of specialty (in this case - Women's Studies)...
BUT YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND OF ENGLISH, SCIENCE, MATH, HISTORY, POLI SCI, AND FINE ARTS ALONG WITH IT.
So if you took the "Women's studies" garbage out of the equation, you have someone that a university decided to say is a well rounded candidate because they have these liberal arts fundamentals.
A high schooler does NOT have these.
This is why I truly believe you're under the age of 18.
ADDITIONALLY, you're talking about discriminating against someone because of something that I don't think you understand.
Isn't /r/mensrights essentially 100% AGAINST that because we see this bullshit being pulled against us all the time?
Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
[–]McFeely_Smackup6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No, I'm talking about evaluating two people based on real world issues, rather than feel good nonsense.
If the two are equal except for one having no degree and one having a degree in nonsense, the nonsense degree is not in their favor. The fact that they have taken OTHER classes are only relevant if...well, if they're relevant. It doesn't have any inherent value.
swing and a miss.
[–]nobody2000-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The degree's course material accounts for a portion of their education.
The rest of their education is shared by biology majors, math majors, english majors, history majors, etc.
So if 60% of their coursework is women's studies, then 40% is going to be liberal arts.
I would rather have a candidate have that 40% of stuff that EVERY COLLEGE GRAD HAS, rather than the 0% that the high school grad has.
If you're older than 18, then you at least never attended college. You need to do like 5 minutes of research on what college is, because you clearly don't have a clue. Seriously. This is BASIC shit.
[–]capitanestevan0 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Every college major requires a background in all of this. Also, most liberal arts degrees only require 3 hours of math(algebra lol) and 6 hours of science. You're outta your mind if you think liberal arts graduates have a strong set of analytical skills.
I don't think YOU understand what a liberal arts education is. If you did, you'd know why they're considered useless by many people: they don't teach you any skills most employers are willing to pay for. This is especially true for Gender Studies degrees. "Oh, you took a couple of classes in cross-cultural topics in women's and gender studies? Cool. Can you use a decision tree to calculate the NPV of several options of O&G exploration? You can't? OK, can you do a SOX 404 top–down risk assessment ? You can't? Well then...um...can you weld?"
Weird. I thought we were talking about college grads vs. High schoolers. Everything you said is true, but irrelevant. A high schooler has none of this. Also, I NEVER claimed anything about analytical skills...Also - please tell me what analytical skills a high school grad is going to have...
Can you use a decision tree to calculate the NPV of several options of O&G exploration? You can't? OK, can you do a SOX 404 top–down risk assessment ? You can't? Well then...um...can you weld?"
Your day-1-of-finance-101 examples are fine for financial careers. Whoop dee fuck. For a career in finance, accounting, or Business development, yes, you would need to know those things.
A liberal arts degree isn't going to guarantee you analytical skills, exposure to specific ways of doing things, or any of that. It WILL provide employers an idea of:
"This person can write an argumentative paper, so they probably are at least reasonably versed at writing"
"This person understands history, political science, and has a macro-outlook of cause and effect as a result."
"This person applied themselves enough where they were at least able to complete a 4 year challenge."
Having worked with high school graduates in the past, I'd MUCH rather hire someone with basic liberal arts. Is a "genders studies" candidate going to thrill me? No. Will I have a degree of confidence that they'll do the job better than a high school grad? Yes.
No, with liberal arts alone you're not going to be a business or STEM candidate. You might, however be able to work as an office administrator, work coordinator in a number of industries, basic sales for an insurance company, or simply a retail manager.
None of these are glorious, but I'd rather employ someone who I know spent 4 years being judged on college level writing than one who didn't. Writing = communication, and I'm going to reduce my risk of employing someone who sucks at communication.
[–]dgafuan1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Your biology degree would hold far more value than a gender studies degree, so your decision to stick it out makes a little more sense. If you know you're in a bullshit program, you're better off making the change. I've had 40-somethings in my college program, which just proves it's never too late to switch it up. Stop making excuses for these people.
It's DEFINITELY never too late. However, it's important not to downplay the importance of the core, liberal arts background.
Honestly, any school that offers a "Gender Studies" concentration likely has a general History concentration to which a student can shift at the cost of maybe 3-4 wasted classes. This may be a stretch for a 1st semester Senior, but not so bad for a 2nd semester Junior.
As for "making excuses for these people." Fuck that noise. The girl in the picture is a cunt - I agree with you on that.
As for the rest of the people who want to pay using their money to learn about something that interests them so what?? I had a passion for science and later one for business so I studied them.
Regardless of major, everyone's still getting a liberal arts education. Do you know how many History majors actually use history in their day-to-day lives? Just ask one when he shows up to your door with a vacuum cleaner for sale, or when he calls you up on the phone to sell you insurance. The "job worthy skills" are in what they learned from their holistic learning experience, not just their major.
Don't question someone's passion unless you know their motives. The girl in the picture has shitty motives. There are other reasons to take a "soft" major like "gender studies."
I won't judge anyone for taking this type of major - until they hold up a sign and give some bullshit "I need feminism..." argument.
[–]WhiteThrone17 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I wouldn't.
With her indoctrination in Male-hatred, Patriarchy Theory, and Radical Activism, combined with her typically college attitude that 'corporations are evul', means she will likely sew discord in the workplace until she can find an opportunity to file a lawsuit that will not only put the company out of business, but likely leave the top personnel paying a settlement that will kept them debt-slaves for life.
I'd rather hire the person with an attitude conducive to team-work, cooperation, and may actually be 'grateful' for being given a break ... and therefore so some level of loyalty. Those are qualities that I'd never expect to find in the Gender Studies Major.
[–][deleted]2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
In fairness, corporations could stop doing things like hiring death squads to kill unionists in South America, giving away fake drugs in Africa, pushing for wars in the Middle East. Then people would be a lot less likely to see them as evil.
Are corporations inherently evil? Probably not. Are they evil as they are currently set up, entirely to seek a profit motive with no sense of greater responsibility? Fuck yeah, they are.
[–]Wulibo1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm immensely interested in gender and sexuality in human psychology immensely, doesn't make me an evil SRS drone. Judging people's personalities based on a major is random generalizing and just stupid. She could be a very hard worker who has a strong interest in where gender comes from and a passing interest in Feminism who decided to make a low-effort image for tumblr or whatever, for all we know she shares our views entirely and hasn't looked into Feminism enough to realize the difference.

I'm afraid that she would not be a very good employee and I would certainly not want someone around who most certainly holds the personal beliefs that she holds. The choices people make tell you about them. And choosing to pursue the degree she did tells me that she is not someone I would want working for me or with me.
[–][deleted]3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Exactly. 'Hi I have a degree in how best to be a victim, I'll probably end up sleeping with all the men on staff sand then sure your company for sexual harassment the second someone comments on my hair'. Not to mention she would probably complain and demand she get paid Ryder same add people with useful qualifications doing real work.

Accredited universities still have broad discrepancies in standards. General requirements don't mean much because individual majors have higher standards for what needs to be taken. The level of difficulty in the general requirements aren't really worth going to college for.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted... probably because you refused to participate in the circlejerk.
[–]nobody20006 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Right?
The girl in the picture is herself a shitty person probably. She is trying to connect the dots from Feminism to Gender Studies, and sucks at it. She's trying to prop herself up, delivering a "holier than thou" bullshit argument.
But that doesn't mean that someone with a B.A. in Gender Studies is valueless. It certainly doesn't mean they have less value than someone with only a High School diploma.
But that's what this sub has become. No more discussing issues. Let's post an infuriating picture, and then circlejerk around it.
Which is exactly. What. SRS. Does. With. Reddit. Posts.
It's also what EVERY. NEO. FEMINAZI. SITE. does with MRA topics.

Perhaps, but how about the person who started working straight out of high school and now has a few years of experience?
[–]Lawtonfogle2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Nah, doesn't mean it is wroth much.
I got two degrees, a B.S. in Com Sci and a B.S. in Psychology. I am well aware of the minimum level of other courses you have to take to get the degree. While I personally took far more math than I needed, the minimum requirements for psychology was very low. It was absolutely sad. If a kid did good in BC calc at high school I would likely rank them as being a level above in math. Even the statistics course wasn't about statistics but about using statistical programming. I'm glad I took the real statistic course (the same one required for an engineering degree) as well. The weird thing... the grad psych program was stats heavy and if you got even a masters from there, you would be guaranteed to know your math. The level of difference between undergrad and grad was astounding.

Most people would specifically not hire her because her degree is in a bullshit subject.
Someone with a high school diploma is trainable. They are green. This person has demonstrated that she's willing to spend a TON of money on something very frivilous and useless. I dont want to put that person in charge of anything in my company.

Yes. I think she is confusing "validity" with "worth." And I'm assuming this is backlash coming from "women's study" about the wage gap being argued against by using the choices women choose like choosing women's studies as a major is brought up to explain why women are "paid less" than men. You are not going to earn as much with a women's studies degree than an engineering degree and that applies to both men and women.
Its not a valid degree either. She didn't take gender studies she took women's gender studies. What's more its all pseudo-intellectual and pseudo-academia, its like having a medical degree in chiropractic or homeopathy or astrology.
It's a degree. An accredited degree in something discredited.

[–]lamblikeawolf1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Can't find exact numbers for you, but here is an article that kind of addresses it.
The differences between men and women’s choices in majors are less exaggerated when viewed in terms of department popularity instead of sex representation. Sixty percent of men and 50 percent of women are enrolled in the same six majors: history, political science, English, psychology, biology and economics.
So, you're about equally likely to find men as you are to find women in those six majors.

[–]alek24077 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think it's one of those fields where it's only for the sake of academia. Lots of other subjects such as History or something. You learn them to study them and propagate them. That would be okay, if so many people weren't pursuing those degrees (there is limited spots in academia) and if their expectations were realistic. I'm sure there are a few jobs out there that gender studies would be helpful though (so feminist organizations).
History majors actually get employed pretty frequently by the military. It goes hand-in-hand with planning, the after-action process, etc. Chances are that before you embark on making a monumental mistake, someone else has done it before you.
From a military history perspective, if what you're attempting to do is something that only the Mongols have succeeded at, it probably isn't a great idea.
[–]alek24071 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Still, I believe that the market for history majors is rather limited. There are many other "respectable" majors such as philosophy or sociology which face the same problem.
They move on to law school or public administration majors
[–]DavidByron87 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There are a lot of "jobs for the girls" as a result of the legal advances made by feminists in the 80s and 90s. And some of them could reasonably be called, "professional privilege checker".

At my university a quota is getting enacted that 50% of all university teachers need to be female. Mind you that my university only offers STEM education. The university paper dealing with the question "is this discriminatory against males" include nice quotes such as:
[This] is not a special privilege for women but rather a temporary and proportional compensation to level the playing field [red.] because the dominant party has a tendency to search for candidates who are like them (namely men).
By a female researcher for gender and diversity of a completely different university.
The female chair of a Women in STEM association seems to understand that this might be discrimination:
It is only logical to only hire women until the genders are equally represented, though one could ask whether this rule is discriminatory or not.

As a philosopher, if you want a job skill study engineering or go to technical school. Education is valuable in itself. You just won't see philosophers shamelessly looking for external validation like this.
College isn't always for direct job relate to your degree, it's about education in the same way high school has nothing to do with working. It's just a shame that Americans have to pay so much for their education.
Then why do companies make it a criteria to only hire college grads?

If you think the only value that a degree carries is based on one's ability to get a job with it, you might want to check yourself. Many people get degrees because they actually care about something and want to devote their lives to it, regardless of whether or not there's a ready-made job market for them.
oh my bad, these days I don't think a degree really means shit, I consider most degree's a waste of money, because from what I've seen, most don't teach you much, but some of them can still get you a job..

The ironic thing is that, an "unprivileged" women would be completely unable to pursue a career in an unviable field. Dr Jason Laker was a former Vice-Dean of Student Affairs at Queen's whose doctoral dissertation was on male engagement in the classroom is a strong proponent of Men's issues. He's since left to join San Jose State University and he's sorely missed.
His replacement Ann Tierney (yes, her last named is pronounced "tyranny") is a lawyer, but has in many respects been disappointing. She spearheaded the suspension of our marching band for apparently being degrading and offensive to women in spite of the fact that the marching band is dominated by women. Reality Check: You degree is worth the same as a man's. But women have this weird biological quirk called 'getting pregnant.' 'Getting pregnant' often causes a women to stay at home with there 'offspring' and stopping their career before they reach the pinnacle of there profession.
For those that choose to continue working after 'getting pregnant', 'offspring' generally interrupt there career track. The distraction caused by the 'offspring' detracts from their salary goals. This effect is amplified when a stable mate is not in the 'family unit.'
The solution is simple: don't 'get pregnant' and stop complains because other women choose to.

I'm just saying that you identified that the joke you were going to make was, in fact, sexist, and then continued to make it under the guise that you "want to but shouldn't"
[–]bigkax2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I said it sounded like a sexist joke, but i didn't wanted to make a joke out of it, i wanted to say some thing like "she will end up flipping burgers", profession commonly referenced in unqualified males, but now that i think of it generally males cook and females sell the burgers...
Some time we want to to say something but we can't because we will probably be perceived in a wrong way, but if we don't talk about it thing wont change.

Women being taught to blame men on all their problems is a MRA issue.
Not all women studies students are that way but there are plenty that are. They will use the fact that they have a diploma in this field to claim that you are not educated enough to comment on gender issues.
My fiancee works with a college student who started taking womens studies courses and you couldn't make up the shit she posts on her facebook if you tried. Anytime I reply I get a femnazi responses about how she is studying this and that I should educate myself before I comment.
[–]theskepticalidealist4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Sure it is, she'll get a low paying job and then blame teh patriarchy for not paying her as much as a lawyer or engineer
Awhile ago I made a post here warning people that ultimately we will only become exactly what feminism became. A group of people being manipulated by a minority who have no interest in anything beyond their own power.
It is inevitable that "Men's Rights Advocates" will become hateful people worked into a frenzy by a few "leaders" who are solely interested in book sales, TV deals, etc.
[–]AloysiusC-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
downvote this moron instead.
[–]pstanish4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I think the reason why her gender studies degree is not as valid as, lets say and engineering degree, is because of feminism. Either because feminists don't teach the whole argument. The curriculum was most likely dumbed down as a result of feminism making the degree less valid. Without feminism she may have actually had to learn how to think and not what to think.
It could also be that a degree in hating men does nothing to help the world function and is, itself, parasitic on people with degrees who m know how to keep planes in the air and put space craft on Mars.
[–]theskepticalidealist3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Was there gender studies before feminism?
[–]abillonfire4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What goes through your mind when you pick that subject to study and spend thousands on, all it would of taken is 10 seconds to think "Hmm, should I pick this? is there lots of jobs going for gender study students?"
So this is what /r/MensRights is becoming...
[–]spatchbo1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I had friends post as part of this group. So i posted this up and a few female friends shared it. It has an aspect for the folks in the middle.
lol
I don't even.

Of all the gender studies student I wouldn't hire, the one who made a freaking sign about it is the one I would hire the last.
[–]stop_stalking_me2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't think valid means what she thinks it means.

Valid =/= useful
[–]blueoak92 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
"Just as valid..."? What does that even mean? Valid on what scale? Obviouolsy not on the employability scale or the utility to bosses scale of the usefulness to society scale.
[–]zomgitsduke2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Until you tell her it's just as valid as a degree in theater, THEN she has a problem...
[–]MRMRising2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's valid in the minimum sense, we do not need Gender studies Grads in this economy. We need folks with STEM skills and Tradesman. If she wants to study feminism she can pay for it herself.

[–]goodknee-2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
and thats why I chose not to get degrees in the fields like these: music English Theater Art
If you're going to get a degree, get a degree thats useful, or don't get a degree..
Universities shouldn't be offering degrees in this kind of shit.
[–]goodknee-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
yeah, I never got how a theater degree or a music degree was legit..unless maybe they were from Berklee or something..
[–]ScottyBrown-2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Sorry your propaganda degree didn't teach u how to think. You had to lie about reality to pass
[–]dilatory_tactics-3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
