Depends on the traits that are absolute criteria. For me, I’m extremely attracted to intellectual men. Besides that, other qualities are: wit, ability to carry conversations in broad range of subjects, fit/ healthy lifestyle, and not dogmatic or judgmental politically. The latter is problematic, because I live in a very liberal area. I’m an independent; liberal on some issues while classic liberal/ conservative in others. Not into political dogmas, I research issues before forming educated views instead of adhere to party/ ideology. Even this can be a turn-off for certain liberal men here. Some will not date non-liberal women.

Do looks play into commitment to a man? Yes, but it’s not everything. I’ve dated okay-looking men. But they each had other qualities going for them, such as being intellectual/ witty, fit/ athletic, confidence, exude niceness/ kindness.

Your question is rooted in false presumptions. An attractive woman will commit only to an attractive high-value man, that is not as abundant as you may think. Out of all the men she has interested in her at any moment, she probably finds 5-10% attractive, and out of those most don't want to commit at all (because they have options), no matter how attractive that one woman might be. Don't make the mistake of confusing bare sexual interest with an interest in a committed relationship. So if she manages to filter out those that she wants to be with and that want to be with her, I bet the choice is not as overwhelming.

Let me start by saying most women are looking for monogamy When they are looking or a relationship. So being with mutiple men at the same time particularly if they are looking or a life partner is not a good thing. I am older now but I am a formerly hot girl. Online in my mid 30s I would get 50 or more emails a day, I would get cat called on the street, hit on at my work (to the point of embarrassment) You get the point. Most of the men that give us attention are not viable dating options. (I should note none of this attention is fun but I think that men think they would love it if it happened to them so they do it). At least 50% (or more) of the men that message you online never read your profile they just look at your pictures and they are in no way shape or form a match to you, they live far away, they smoke, they are 20 years older than you, they don’t want kids, etc you get it. Around 20% are follow up emails from men you did not respond to saying things like “what are you too pretty for me you b word why can’t you respond you are not that pretty”. Twenty percent more are nasty emails disgusting dick picks, etc. So that leaves 10% that are viable options and that’s an overestimate. Out of those 10%, 5% are intimidated by the way you look and/or extremely jealous. In real life average good guys never hit on you, it’s all fuck boys because they are the only ones confident to hit on you so you become jaded towards men in general. You avert your eyes to the ground because you have been screamed at, harassed, touched where you don’t want to be without your consent more times than you can count. When you go out to the store you purposely dress down and wear a hat, I digress.

While most of the really attractive women can sleep with any men we want, and may get mostly negative attention from all the men we want, we actually struggle a lot with relationships. As I aged I actually found it easier to meet men who I would want to be with for the long term. What would I want back then? Someone I was attracted to who was honest, who was not intimidated who was loyal, who had high emotional intelligence, who had a job and was not suffered from some undiagnosed illness or addiction that he did not want treatment for.

First I ruled most of them out before even considering a date, like if they are unattractive, conservative, religious, can’t hold a conversation, etc. I would go on a date with one to see if he meshes with me. Often you can find out they won’t be compatible in just one or two dates, then I picked another and repeat. Then she’ll start to realize “why am I putting in the work of being his wife in order to get taken care of, when I can just leave him and get taken care of, and not have to do the work”. That’s when the divorce comes. Think Bezos, Elon, and Gates. In one word..being generous. European dating is very transactional. All my female colleagues, female acquaintances rank a man’s generosity as the most important characteristic they look for. A man’s generosity is ranked first and foremost in financial terms and secondly with his personality. Perhaps because over here in continental Europe things are more open, liberal, less taboo than in other parts of the world, a man always picks up the bill for everything on a date. It’s normal dating behavior over here that the more financially independent the woman is the more her chosen partner is expected to be ‘generous.’ It’s almost like the polarity between men and women needs to be reinforced with the more equality women have over here.

My female colleague and acquaintances all talk about ‘intelligent feminism.’ The more attractive, the more educated, and the more independent a woman is the more her partner absolutely must be generous and pick up the bill for everything.

No guy can expect a second date if he doesn’t ‘pamper his princess’ ( especially true in France, Italy, Spain). Most agree the amount a man is expected to spend on his first date is between 100-200€ depending on the country.. this obviously increases as the relationship continues. Men except it here. A man’s generosity is the number one criteria for being chosen here.

This is a great question, one I think I'm qualified to answer as recently a few of my long term FwBs have opened up to me about their romantic and sexual histories.

As one of them shared with me, when we first started "seeing" each other, I was in the running with 2 other guys. She was single, and mingling, and casually dating 2-3 men simultaneously while having HUNDREDS of matches on Hinge and Bumble. When 1 guy dropped out of the 3 rotation, another new guy from the dating sites would fill in the new vacant spot.

When it was me and 2 others, it really was the others who "messed up their chances" with her.

One guy was great on paper. Normal good looking, ambitious, similar background and values. They vibed ok, but the connection didn't go into the next level because he was time constrained, he told her he won't have a lot of time to get together as he was just beginning to open his very first business, a completely new undertaking. He would be devoting almost all his free time and energy into it. So for that reason, that connection ended.

The 2nd guy was an absolute looking Chad! By her own words, and I saw a pic, a very good looking guy she got off Bumble. They hung out a few times, a date or two, and they were making out! But it didn't go further than that because when a moment of truth arrived, when he asked to take things further to the bedroom, she declined. The way she told me, even though he was ridiculously good looking, his vibe was a little bit off when he mentioned his exes, and he was still hung up on a few girls in his past. She felt that if she had sex with him, she was "second" and he'd really rather be doing one of them. She was interested enough to have sex with him but what he was saying and his behavior fucked it up for him. It didn't make her feel good and so she called it a night, and he went home, no sex took place. They hung out one more time after as "friends" (which he had agreed to) but he tried to make a move on her and she felt repulsed and said no.

A guy from bumble took his place in the dating rotation, and that didn't last a single day. He was a regular looking, tech multimillionaire. On paper he would've been a fun choice except when they got together, he let it be known that he had an extreme hand fetish thing. On the date, he kept asking to hold her hand, let me touch your hands, and at the mid point, she could've swore that he ejaculated in his jeans when he was stroking her hands... it turned her off and she felt disgusted. She said no amount of money could turn that situation around for her because, funny enough, she has a thing about strangers touching her hands. She has some sort of extra sensitivity.

Then there was little ol' me. I did not take her out to dates or drinks like these other guys did... our first meeting was a simple hello and kiss at a bench at a nearby beach. I'm just a regular guy ( nowhere near close to the Chad that had been at her house, my muscles deflated and my 6 pack long gone in my 20s ). We talked about random things, but there was a decent enough vibe between us. We had sex on our second meeting, protected. We had sex on our third meeting, unprotected. A level of trust and desire just developed from there. She says because of that, it added an extra layer of difficulty to move forward physically with any of her other dates because she felt they would disappoint. I believe her.

So here is it can go 2 ways. If a girl cares about the number of sexual partners she'll have in her lifetime, she will date and kiss but not fuck many guys. During dry spells she will prefer to dig back in her black book and have fun with exes and previous partners as that doesn't increase her number. If a girl doesn't care about her "n-count", she'll indulge with however many she sees fit. In fact, she'll fuck some that she's lukewarm about for the novelty of it, a new partner may possess or be something she hasn't tried before, and she is curious enough to find out.

As a somewhat experienced man, if you put a gun to my head, my answer is that she picks a man because of his eyes.

What I mean but that is this: when a woman is determining whether a man acceptable to commit to, whether sexually and/or romantically for the long haul, he has to have just the right mix of things in his eyes when he looks at her.

The guys before me had weird, stalker-y , beady, blank stare stupid looking eyes. Even Chad had a look in his eyes that seemed "wimpy/embarrassed or shameful".

When I look at my favorite lady friend, my eyes are clear and sharp, signaling an intelligence bordering on cunning, a clarity that she can see in me, a bit of cynicism about life but , despite that, still able to be goofy and enjoy the little things, a bit of mischief, a normality to my being and yes, even a hint of being mean and cruelty that, while lurking in the back of my eyes, I seldom act on and just think it. And in the bedroom, you need to blow her mind and get her addicted to your dick. In the past a man probably had 2 opportunities to impress in the bedroom, nowadays you get one shot, if you're lucky. A man has to make the most of it and not fuck up.

This special mix of just the right things, with a good enough vibe and no weird fetishes let her commit to me as a long-term sexual partner. I believe every woman picks a man that has his own special mix of qualities, in just the right blend, that allows him to be an acceptable mate to her.

At every level of attractiveness, the same issues exist… People are duped by charming deceivers, people are heartbroken and lonely, people are unstable (financially, physically, mentally, etc), and yet many people still manage to find love. When I finally met my fiancé, I knew he was the one because he was so much like me across the board in all areas of life, and yet also brings a lot to the table that I do not (and vice versa). My family met him and said that they knew he was for me because I was completely myself around him and he seemed to be completely comfortable being himself around me as well. That’s what makes spending a life with someone work IMO… In 20 years when the looks fade, can you stand sharing a space with your partner? When tragedy hits, will you really trust them to understand and be there for you? Do they make you laugh (even if they’re not a “funny person” naturally) - do they figure out things that make you laugh and try to work them into each day just to see you smile? Can they keep up with you mentally when discussing politics, religion, philosophy, or whatever other intellectual topics you care about? Do they fit in with the other people who are important to you in life (aka, do your friends like/respect them?) Do they engage in destructive habits you oppose (porn, drugs, alcohol, irresponsible spending, unhealthy eating, etc). All of these things are being weighed by the attractive woman in question depending on her own personhood and past. No two women will be the same, and while many (even MOST) women will find Ryan Gosling sexy, many would go on a date with him and realize they have nothing in common….some would still jump at the chance to marry him anyway, and some would politely move on. Just before I met my fiancé I was dating a very pretty faced Frenchman who made north of 20 million dollars selling his startup. I went on maybe 4-5 dates with him before politely moving on and remaining friends. We just didn’t click in any of the aforementioned areas and I didn’t feel like I could comfortably be “me” around him. Measuring just attractiveness level and success level, sure, he’s by far my best “catch”, but I’m 99.9% sure that relationship if turned into a marriage would end in divorce. Now I’m with someone where divorce feels like the last thing I’ll ever have to worry about. I’m much more worried about my love dying in a freak accident riding his bike to work or something….😭

i raised my standards. I changed the environment I used to stay in (trying to spot high quality people), looking for men who compliment other things than just my beauty and looks, people who have passions, aspirations and high standards themselves.
