Your simplistic, and quite nonsensical misinterpretation and dismissal is a fine example of the ignorance that prevails in this society. Your parrot like reply, or conditioned response identifies your problem, not anyone else's.

discrimination
recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another.
"discrimination between right and wrong"
But let's all just keep letting them re-write word definitions, surely that won't be an issue ever.
[–]SunshineBlind 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You forgot the most commonly used definition:
"the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
"victims of racial discrimination" "
Or you just left it out on purpose for ideological reasons. Which is it?
[–]EsotericEye 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Or when saying "there is no such thing as 'positive' discrimination,'" it's just discrimination. It's exactly like the stupid, nonsense terms "reverse sexism" and "reverse racism." There is no "reverse sexism" or "reverse racism," it's just sexism and racism.
They are intentionally misleading terms created to make sexism and racism against men and white people seem much less serious than sexism and racism against women and people of color when they're actually the same exact thing.
[–]NLioness 65 points66 points67 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"Positive discrimination" is what in Americans call "affirmitive action". Yet, there is nothing positive about this type of discrimination.

People's Republic of China Democratic People's Republic of Korea
Which are neither and Republic or Democratic in nature and are certainly not the "People's".
[–]Sabertooth767 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
NK is debatable, but China is a republic. Jinping is no emperor, and in theory, the General Assembly could oust him, although in practice the Secretariat has control over the Presidency. Regardless, Jinping's relatives almost definitely won't be the next presidents, and he has no divine right to rule.
[–]earlsmouton 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I must have my definitions wrong then. I thought China was a dictatorship with a single ruler and all others fell in line unless a coup would put some else with more power into position. I really need to read up on the current situation more closely. I'm getting mixed up on the definition on a republic. Thanks for the clarification!
[–]Sabertooth767 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
China is more like an oligarchy than a dictatorship, certainly not an autocracy like NK.
Essentially, China is run by the Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of China. On paper, this group is headed by the General Secretary (who is also the President), but in practice is run by the First Secretariat (currently Wang Huning). At the moment, there are seven seats. This group is empowered to make the day-to-day decisions of the Politburo, which runs the CCP as a whole. On paper, the President is elected by the General Assembly, but in practice, they are elected by the Secretariat- and the First Secretariat has a strong habit of winning.
NK, on the other hand, is an autocracy. Kim's word is law, and one of his relatives will succeed him (assuming there is no coup).
[–]earlsmouton 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Dude, this is awesome. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. I always thought the leader was more a dictator and had the backing/puppet of the military until he became to powerful or to crazy. Now to go digging into some rabbit holes to really get a handle on this. Again, thanks for enlightening me!
[–]Sabertooth767 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No problem. I think a lot of people make the mistake of assuming that Jinping is an autocrat, and that if he were to die or loose power, China would be irreparably damaged, much like if Kim Jong Un suddenly died. But no, if Jinping were to die, Huning would take his place and business would carry on as usual. That is why China is so dangerous, its atrocities are not the work of one maniac, but an entire system that will keep the wheel turning until the CCP itself falls.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
American atrocities aren't the work of one maniac either... That's not "why China is so dangerous".
If anything, China would be far more dangerous to the US if it remained a democracy.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
On paper, this group is headed by the General Secretary (who is also the President), but in practice is run by the First Secretariat (currently Wang Huning).
Not true. In practice it is run by the general secretary. And you're making Wang Huning's role much bigger than it is; after Xi, the second-in-command role is president, held by Li Keqiang. Sure, Wang currently has more de facto power than Li, but that's only because Li is from Hu's faction and Xi has been taking power away from him.
And, the most powerful people in China de jure are the retired general secretaries by order of seniority. So de jure the power hierarchy is Jiang, then Hu, then Xi, then Li, then Wang. Of course Jiang and Hu are retired so they would only exercise this power to veto Xi if necessary.
Also, you forgot to mention Deng's policy of choosing your successor's successor. Not that it matters as much as the vote of the Politburo Standing Committee, but it does play a role. Currently Hu's successor's successor is Hu Chunhua, so the fact that he's not yet on the PSC hints that either Xi is staying on for an extra term, or Xi is trying to undermine the Hu faction.

Formally I think it's not positive as in good but rather as in positive/negative rights? It's a propaganda term anyway of course
[–]Sabertooth767 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No. Positive and negative rights refers to the right to have things done/provided (e.g. healthcare is a postive right) or not done (e.g. liberty is a negative right).
The "positive" definitely means good in this case. Remember, this is considered to be a sort of repayment for past discrimination.
[–]PeteyMax 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Positive in this case means discriminating for rather than discriminating against. What that leaves out is if you're picking women over others and people of colour over others, who's left? So in the end, it doesn't really make any difference if you prefer some over others rather than reject someone.
[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]photoedfade 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
why does it require women in order to function properly? nothing requires any specific gender, all we need is an amount of people. really this isn't a good thing that they are only hiring one sex.
[–]WaffleKing110 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I don’t know enough about the issue to take a stance, so I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here:
One huge objective of colleges (in the US at least) is to encourage more women to join STEM type fields in order to shrink the gap between then number of men and women in those professions. Women are more likely to take those classes if they see that women can succeed in the field, which tenured professors surely have.
Another possible reason could be for “women’s studies” type classes, where it would make no sense to have a purely male staff.
All that being said, this post seems to indicate that all positions were opened to women first. While again I’m lacking information here, that certainly strikes me as very problematic.
[–]photoedfade 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
no the problem is that most women studies is essentially a class on sexism against men, teaching about a "wage gap" that is still apparently going on today even though it was eradicated like, over 50 years ago. it teaches a shit ton of sexist things towards men, makes women feel like shit an manipulates them, using the fact that they then feel like shit, and it is just an absolute hell hole. now i totally believe in supporting women going into stem fields, but i don't support making it to where ONLY women are allowed into stem fields.
[–]Rick_Alben -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well you're not taking into account that men and women excel at different things, and a team needs all kinds of different qualities to perform well in every situation. Men aren't the best at everything, even if it is a technical university
[–]photoedfade 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]foxyramirez 32 points33 points34 points 6 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
The equal opportunity hiring act does actually protect you from this kind of discrimination. Employers cannot discriminate based on gender, race, religion, or disability. If you file your resume to that company in America and they don't hire you on basis of gender, they're liable to be sued, as well as face criminal fines.
[–]SharedRegime 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link
I mean it doesnt stop them. Its well known that companies have to meet diversity quotas so they have to pass up on white men. Thats discriminatiom based on race and gender but its legal cause "quotas."
[–]Pinkglittersparkles 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Quotas are illegal in the United States.
Companies use that information to run statistical analyses to make sure there isn’t any statistically significant discrimination occurring during hiring. Google “disparate impact analysis” or read EEOC guidelines 15-V

You're getting downvoted because people are afraid this sub will be seen as tinfoil-hattery. However, many times when you see that women and minorities are strongly urged to apply, they're putting the tag on help wanted ads there when they're specifically looking for a woman. Not going to go into details, but I've seen this. It's like a very positive and nice thing for some people to see that on a job ad, and there's this assumption that you're doing nothing wrong. I have a different perspective, though.
[–]foxyramirez 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I just don't see it being all that widespread. You're gonna have a hard time finding an industry listing like that without a specific reason.

To my mind, that makes it worse. If most of the interest in the fields of study is from males, then out of the people qualified for the job, males are going to be far more abundant.
"Remember Mary Ogleden from the class of 78? Yeah, she has a Doctorate, we should get her!" And a translation: TU Eindhoven has to give an explanation at the court for human rights for it's hiring policies.
The anti-discrmination bureau radar wants the court for human rights to decide if these policies are allowed.
The university thinks that there are to few female scientists and attempts to do something about that.
A male professor informatics wrote in "de Telegraaf" (a right wing newspaper) that these policies are ridiculus.
A verdict of the court of human rights is not binding, but it is an important verdict and can be used in a court case

Dutchman as well here, just this morning in the paper a write-up about it. Discrimination of all forms positive or negative is legal only through very dense regulation, and the word is still out on this being legal. It's 100% not being supported by the Dutch government though, there where questions about it in parliament and they are not happy
[–]thom430 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's real but some court is investigating if it's legal right now. Also they said trannies were allowed so you could just say you feel like a woman.
Sarcastic comments like this is why men's rights activist are put in a bad light. Instead of actual men's rights discussion, you're just bitching about transgender people.

Any discrimination can be reinterpreted this way.
We're not giving blacks shittier schools, we're positively discriminating in favor of whites by giving them better schools. You don't want them to have good schools?!?!

Blacks actually don't have shittier schools. Pick nearly any majority-black school district, search for spending per pupil, and it's above the national average most of the time.
What they have are shitter/non-existent family structures. No amount of school funding can counteract apathetic or school-hostile parents (or even worse, single parenthood).
[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was more referring to separate but equal...
[–]bistix -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Source? I went to a high school that was 90% black and it was the shittiest school I've ever seen. Trash cans to catch water leaks, normal power outages. Poorer areas are going to have less funds for school no? I'd really love a source for this
[–]leftajar 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
You can source it yourself.
This is what I did: I went to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Then I looked at the US census demographic maps, and picked a high school that was in the center of a solidly black area. (now, there is an assumption that high schools in Black areas have mostly black students, but I think that's probably a fair and safe assumption.)
Then you can search for that school and their annual spending per pupil, and you can compare it to the national average. This information is generally made public.
Each of the three times I tried this, those all black schools had spending substantially in excess of the national average. And each school had dismally terrible reading and math scores. obviously, this isn't a comprehensive study, but it should be enough to refute the meme that it's a funding issue.
[–]Alx1775 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You’re technically right. But I’ve read that a lot of the funds in city schools go to free meals for the students, who might not get them at home.
The other problems you brought up also take their toll, of course. But the funding isn’t as fat as it first appears.
[+]bistix -6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
so you compared large cities spending to the national average? lol I figured there was no real source for this horseshit

Also, you might be interested in the Mark Zuckerberg charity efforts in New Jersey. Long story short, he pumped (I believe) $200 million into underperforming NJ schools, and the ultimate result was a whole lot of nothing.
He was quite candid about the whole ordeal in an interview. Worth checking out, if you care about the truth.
[–]leftajar 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
How about you actually do some digging? Like I said, the information is publicly available.

[–]bistix -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I didn't make any claims to be right or wrong lol....
I'm merely laughing at your baseless claims.
Also a simple google search brought up several articles about underfunded minority schools.
https://psmag.com/education/nonwhite-school-districts-get-23-billion-less-funding-than-white-ones
The researchers at EdBuild calculated that racially concentrated non-white districts receive, on average, only $11,682 of funding per student, in comparison to $13,908 for racially concentrated, white districts.
https://www.npr.org/2019/02/26/696794821/why-white-school-districts-have-so-much-more-money
Are you ready to admit your research is baseless, flawed, and completely inaccurate? I doubt it.
[–]leftajar 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
See, the problem with a theory, is that is needs to explain the actual results. Your theory, of "blacks do poorly because their schools are underfunded," doesn't explain the data. See: Zuckerberg's NJ charity, poor white districts in Appalachia.
Many, many times efforts have been made to "rescue" an underperforming black-majority district by pumping money into it. These efforts virtually never produce the desired results.
Ironically, the links you've posted don't prove anything. They merely show a correlation.
[–]bistix -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I never made that claim. You are trying to put words in my mouth to argue against because you were proven wrong. All I did was prove your claim that black schools are not underfunded wrong. Ironically, what I posted proves you wrong, so you tried to change the subject. Have a nice day

Abstract
The Netherlands has established a program for minority employment patterned after affirmative action in the United States. Thus, the Dutch experience allows a comparative perspective on American efforts, one made more instructive by the sharp differences in intergroup relations between the two nations. We report on our Dutch research on affirmative action among urban police involving almost 100 intensive individual interviews in yoked sets of three--the minority officer, her or his White co-workers, and their immediate supervisor. Based on this initial, rough comparison, we tentatively advance that contrasting national racial normative structures make critical differences in the reception of the policy.

This isn't a zero sum game. Helping someone who needs help doesn't mean someone is hurting you to do it.
The statement in the image implies there is a negative discrimination against the specific group already. Without getting into the question of it's actual presence, the point is that the Dutch government believes that women are being discriminated against in some way and this "positive" discrimination is meant to offset that.
I don't really know anything about gender discrimination in the netherlands, so i can't comment on how valid the claim is.

Education is definitely an area where the wheel has spun the other way. More women are have been graduating from college than men since 1995 and the gap now is the higher now than it ever was when men were getting more degrees. I think we'd all agree that if the numbers were reversed, there'd be a massive outcry to help out.
But we still hear much more about getting women educated. Maybe globally that works out, but not in the US anymore, not for a generation now.
You see some articles but yeah, no one really gives a shit about it in the US. The narrative is too strong right now.

No that's not the policy. They're giving women first chance at applying for the next 6 months and then resuming taking all applications. Nowhere in the OP is there a policy of "only hiring women". Their justification presumably being that women have always been underrepresented in their school staff and they thought it would be a good idea to do a temporary measure to give women a chance to get into positions in the school they've not occupied before.
I'm not making any claim as to whether or not it's a good idea or fair or whatever. Only that using the logic of the policy in the OP the Jim Crow laws analogy is a bad/incorrect analogy.

We (my country) already have "positive discrimination", many companies only consider specific races and females. They would rather hire people that are unqualified and incompetent, then expect other employees to train them and pick up the slack. It did not work. Many people emigrated (still do), and now there is a huge shortage of skills. I also left when I was "retrenched" so that they could give my job to some other people. I worked for some time in Europe and the US. I came back after 5 years, and now work as a consultant. I scoop cash with a bucket now, to fix all their shit. I work only 8 hours a day, work at home 3 days a week, and get paid enough to only work 6 months a year. The other 6 months I travel the world and/or do my own projects (which I sell back to those Political Correct companies for even more wads of cash). BTW I am MGTOW since my divorce (she divorced me when I got retrenched LoL), so it is even easier for me now to do what and how I want.
My point is: let them be PC, let them discriminate. Let them take your rights, let them take your job. They are shooting themselves in the legs. Be smarter than them, make it benefit you.

[–]Ahielia 19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Last I checked (in my country - Norway), it's only allowed to do "positive discrimination" when it benefits females.
Psychology studies are dominated by women by a large margin, and the schools wanted to give extra points to men, gender points essentially - women have a LOT of these, but they weren't allowed because it was discrimination towards women? I can't follow that logic either.
Might have been changed, I dunno, though I doubt it.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Lol I remember that. Didn’t change a bit. I believe that anyone who says feminism is about equality is an oxymoron. That is just egalitarianism.

All kind of discrimination have one group that benefits from it and another group that suffers because of it.
It's just a matter of perspective and they are only focusing on one side.

Positive discrimination to solve a problem that doesn't exist. There is still no evidence that women are being discriminated against. The fact that they need to restrict applications for men basically proves as much. If similarly capable women were applying at similar rates to men, then why would you need to restrict male applicants, why wouldn't you simply hire the women? It's because they are applying at vastly fewer rates, and therefore have fewer strong candidates, which is why they are waiting a whopping six months to find the right female candidate. They know this, and yet still push the lie that women are being discriminated against rather than simply not wanting the job as much as men. What evil people they are.

In my country, Norway, they do this in business leaders because men are more likely to work in leadership positions but completely ignore it in construction work where over 90% of workers are men. Women get quotas for business leaders, police workers, fire fighters, anything to do with science, 120 different studies in our universities and even elite specialized military operators (FSK) with different requirements. Males like me can’t talk about it because we are seen as sexist. There is absolutely no justice.

My brother is a manager for an ICT Developer team. Needless to say it was a male dominated team when he joined.
In a few years he has changed team from 100:0 to 60:40 male to female. He did this primarily by understanding the difference between a typical male and female psychological response to a job advert.
When a advert lists skills required. Women typically want to achieve 80%+ of the requirement before applying. Whereas males would apply at much less (30% - 50%) So he cut the requirements for roles massively to the bare critical minimum and got lots of female applications.
Not saying he's 100% right. But his achievement is through positive CHANGE in how he did his interviews, job adverts and the environment in the office. Not via BS exclusion / discrimination tactics.

Equality Rights
Are you actually saying that you feel discriminated against (as a white male) because you can't take advantage of programs designed to help disadvantaged individuals or groups? Do you honestly believe that white males are a disadvantaged minority in Canada? And if so...why don't you take advantage of this law by petitioning the government to set up a special program to help you overcome your disability?
[–]PeteyMax 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I probably have several hundred job advertisements in my inbox that specify explicit hiring preference for women and minorities. White men are not considered a disadvantaged group, although I wonder what happens when whites become a minority? I imagine they will argue historical precedent to continue to keep whitey out-of-the-loop.
[–]Archangel1313 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I probably have several hundred job advertisements in my inbox that specify explicit hiring preference for women and minorities.
What positions are only hiring women and minorities? I'm curious.
And you need to remember...if white people ever do become a minority in Canada...then those very same rights and freedoms you disagree with now, will be there to protect you, as well. That's what they're for.
[–]PeteyMax 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
These were atmospheric science jobs. What with the backlash against it, outright stating it is less common, but many of the ads had the following disclaimers: "In the event of two people of equal qualifications, women and visible minorities will be given hiring preference." Now you might say, it's only if their qualifications are equal, but how are you going to measure it? What that means in practice is that unless you hare head-and-shoulders above the next best woman or minority, you ain't gettiin' that job...
[–]Archangel1313 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Hmmm. You know what I'd be really curious about? How many white, male applicants actually lose a position to a woman and/or minority? I'd be willing to bet the reason they throw that disclaimer on there is because they simply don't get any applicants that qualify and also happen to be women and/or visible minorities...especially if there are "several hundred" job openings available. That implies there aren't a lot of qualified applicants in general...so I'd assume they'd take as many people as they can get. Unless the industry is literally flooded with atmospheric scientists, that is.
[–]PeteyMax 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
People keep using this argument. Frankly, I don't give a shit. It's the principle of the thing. During the last interview I had for a position in Germany, there was a woman from the "Ministry of Equality" or some other Orwellian title, whose only reason for being there, as far as I could tell, was to make sure not too many of my kind made it in.
[–]Archangel1313 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So, you don't care that your argument is effectively pointless in reality? You're sticking with it because it helps you justify your misplaced persecution complex? Have fun with that.

sexism and racism is ok when we do it according to them
