Decades ago women focused on their looks (meaning to be attractive in general and not look like a model) and child rearing capabilities/household management capabilities for snagging a man to marry. (At least middle to upper class females did). That is just the tip of the iceberg now for what men look for in/expect from their wives in marriage.

The two most successful people I know don’t have degrees. One dropped out in his first year of a mechanical engineering degree, and the second didn’t even graduate high school. Both are highly respected, and worth a ton of money. They own businesses and get plenty of respect from everyone within their sphere of influence. Meanwhile, I (bachelors degree holder) have answer to a boomer who has no degree, no common sense, and can’t even type emails. When he doesn’t get his way, or someone challenges him when he’s dead wrong, he gets mad and starts pitching a fit like a child. Yea, the true measure of success here. I have to deal with it because well; I’m 30 years old, it’s too late to start over, and I need the money. Pure hell.

I wish I had just told my parents “no thanks” to college and gone out to learn some real marketable skills. At least they paid for that useless piece of paper and I don’t have any debt. It would have made a nice down payment on a house which would have been a much better investment.

Now, let me go up my own ass for a bit...

Let's remember what things looked like 20 years ago:

No social media. The first iteration of social Media (Friendster had just hit the scene 20 years ago, I remember the buzz about it among all my friends)
AIM and Yahoo Messenger were popular in the US. The was what "sliding into the DM's" looked like 20 years ago.
Texting was barely a thing. Oddly, I was dating a German woman at the time and visiting her in 2002 was the first time I had seen this widely used among people.
For nearly everyone, being on the internet still meant "sit at a desk and patiently wait for pages to load to read e-mail and get the news"
Online dating consisted of match.com and that's about it.
Laptops and Wireless internet were still niche / luxury items
Mainstreamed / supercharged political divisiveness had begun to take hold (Fox News was already huge), but was still limited by the lack of social media, virality and internet accessibility. There was Freerepublic.com and Democraticundeground.com and the toxicity was generally silo'd in those venues and it was not rewarded through likes / retweets.
Smartphones did not exist. The first semi-functional Blackberry came out in 2002.

Due to all of these things:

People still had to meet in-person at clubs, bars or at work. Dating co-workers was extremely common and not even around upon. It wouldn't get you questioned by HR let alone "metoo'd".

People had to rely on face-to-face communication skills to have any semblance of connection to the world around them.

Having to sit at a desk to be online meant that "online life" was decidedly separate from "real life" and the two were rarely confused as they are today.

Dating was localized and thus women's hypergamy and men's fomo were naturally limited.

Texting was painful and actual phone conversations were the preferred method of communication.

How anybody can look at all of these things, and then add on the ubiquity of them and not see how this has poisoned so much of our humanity to the extent that the Unabomber would blush is still astounding to me.

This isn't "TV" or even "The automobile". This is more like "The advent of language" or "agriculture" in terms of shifts on the organization of societies and humans.

(42M) I believe a lot of young men were taught by the older generation (now retirees and boomers) that when you are attracted to a woman, you need to be persistent when trying to win her attention. Of course not to be annoying, but because women enjoyed being chased. To be fair, perhaps the boomer women did enjoy being chased for months by a man who was crushing on her, but now, I think the younger generation (especially under 30) would consider that behavior very annoying and cringe.

Actual advice from my grandfather that would never fly today because corporations don't give a shit about you as an individual who wants things like healthcare that doesn't rape your wallet or some attempt at work/life balance. Just get back to work, Employee 24601.

20 years ago advice from older people wasnt that bad, bit naive i guess, but the internet has changed things so much that older people are completely oblivious to the new reality we live in and they come across as totally brain dead now

A life partner didn't used to be something that required decades of shameful planning and scheming. It was just something that happened to you based on the groundwork that was set up by the society you were in, another natural step in the course of living like breathing or eating. 90% marriage rate in 1950. Your grandfather probably didn't have game.

So of course now that those structures are gone, the delta of folk who needed those structures are going to be lost.

Every era has its tradeoffs and this its accordant winners and losers. Seems to be quite en vogue to shame and blame the ones who couldn't just "figure it out" through self-service. Guess the ones who could, time to give them their gold medal for being one of the beneficiaries of this. particular. temporary. era.
