What seems "average" to women is just the men that they find attractive, the men that aren't don't even count, they're quite literally non existent to them. That's why women always seem so perplexed when they find out most men are getting zero attention from the opposite sex because to them it doesn't seem that why, they'll sleep with the men that are "average" in their head and assume that this is kind of men that they must be referring to.

I don't know where you live but I see average and even below average looking couples all the time. But I live in a more redneck area rather than a hip cool city. No, the men are not all 6 foot and buff. They can be 5'9" and chubby, or 5'7" and chubby, and wobble around Walmart with their 5'3" and chubby girlfriends or wives. They aren't rich. They aren't well dressed. They are not above average in attractiveness. Sorry. It's true.

80% of Americans are overweight or obese. This isn't attractive for either gender but biology takes over at some point. Attractive people are more likely to spend time in public so you are going to see them more whether they are single or not. 30% of men 18-30 aren't fucking at all. Then you've got the rest of the demographic. Some men may be having sex, some may not. Some may be in relationships, some may not. There's really no true way to know the numbers.

Could it be that most people have a type but can recognize and note objectively average people without feeling attraction to them? I'm very tall for a woman but have no trouble finding men who I find attractive and men who find me attractive because of the hobbies and interests we share. I play golf, volleyball, and softball. Sometimes basketball in winter. I see tall, fit men all the time.

But I'm not looking for tall, fit men when I go out for a beer or run errands. In those environments, I don't really notice strangers unless we have a reason to interact. I suppose I'd call most men "average" since I'm not constantly scanning my environment for men nor sorting them into "fuckable" and "unfuckable" piles.

Mathematically speaking, if the majority of men get into relationships, and they do, then the average man in any characteristic has gotten into a relationship, including looks. Your subjective assessment of men's looks doesn't change that.

The average young man is having regular sex according to the General Social Survey. The data do not back up the idea that actual average young men are not sexually active.

However, that does not mean that there is not a problem with many below average young men being able to find relationships and sex.

"Average" depends heavily on where you live. If you live in a city full of wealthy, educated young professionals, you're gonna see a lot less chubby dudes in cargo shorts than in Hicksville, USA. But no matter where you go, you will see plenty of average and below average men in relationships with average or above average women.

And average height in the US for young men in 5'10", not 5'9.

Counterpoint: when it comes to weight, what you consider the average man is actually subpar, and the ones who maintain healthy BMIs are the "average".

When it comes to height, the market is open to the least bitter men under 5'7". Own your attributes. Self-loathing is a turn-off.

So easy to change your view on that if you just look at the percentage of women who are in that age bracket and in relationships. 60-70% of women are in relationships with 60-70% of men. Slightly less from that age bracket, as the average age gap is 2 years. Even in a worst case scenario, where only the top 60-70% men are in relationships, that makes a lot of the average men be in relationships. What is average? Half a standard deviation from the mean, if you are really pushing it? So 31th to 69th (nice) percentille. That means that means basically all the average men are in relationships. If you define "average" as even closer to the mean, it's all of those men.

Why are not all average men in relationships? Because also a lot of the below average men are in relationships. And that is only CURRENTLY in relationships. Most of the rest of the men who are currently not in relationships have been and will be in relationships in the near future.

Men on all levels of the attractiveness distribution are and are not in relationships. Your view is biased and wrong.

You know...in a world where so many guys here burble on about preselection it is a saddening fact that none of them have the stones to challenge you in the obvious manner

So I guess I have to raise it as an argument even though it isn't something I believe in. On account of well... you're saying the world is a way that a lot of other men have repeatedly said that it isn't. That needs to be addressed. One side gotta win that argument.

Preselection says that they should find the men as significantly more attractive rather than less attractive if those men are with other women. How do you address this? Do you refute preselection...or give up your argument...or entertain us with some neat sophistry?

Well I know a lot of 5’9”ish chubby guys who aren’t particularly handsome who are in relationships. Also 6’ total nerds with hygiene issues and 5’6” outgoing dudes. You just can’t have ALL the strikes against you at once it seems.

You have confirmation bias or it could be where you live. Most people in life are average bud and there aint anything wrong with that. I see average people paired together all the time. Unfortunately, most people in the US are a bit overweight. Hence, you see a little bit overweight couples together all the time.

You all focus WAY too much on looks and income here. The real issues with finding someone is vetting character and compatibility. Most people looking to date have looks and income thresholds, which vary upon the person, and its not hard to find people who meet these thresholds after you stop being a hermit. Now, character and compatibility- thats where it gets tough.
