I once came across a discussion online where someone asked if maintenance men etc look into the laundry baskets or drawers (to find sex toys) if they know the place belongs to a woman.

There were quite a lot of men who were saying they do and almost acted like it was an obvious thing. Some people weren't maintenance workers who said that they would if they were.

I say this whenever this topic comes up (which is often because so many men are straight up predators) but get cameras in your home and inform all workers that they’re being recorded. Don’t tell them where they are. If you have a dog, don’t let them associate with workers in your home so that they remain strangers to them so the dog can alert you if they return.

Go to Goodwill or a resale store and buy a pair of the biggest men's workboots you can find (they won't cost much). If you have reason to be particularly worried, grab a men's jacket too. (The point of buying them used is they should show a bit of wear. You want something that isn't fresh off the rack.)

You can sign up for mailing lists under a male name / same surname. Leave those fliers lying around. Most maintenance people aren't going to look that closely, but it's an option.

You don't have to plug it in, but a visible baby / nanny cam with a view to the entire room isn't a bad thing to have up. You can always bring it up and how you love being able to watch your dogs from work or wave to your husband during the day while he's in the office, etc.

I strongly recommend buying multiple cheap wedding ring/engagement-ring type rings and storing them where you might need them - a set in your car, a set by your front door, a set in your bag. If you're wearing them at work, you'll need something higher quality (someone sitting next to you in a meeting can pick up on the fact that a $22 ring has plastic prongs) and something you throw on to open the door can be cheap and unconvincing up close.

You can also buy pheremones that seem to make you almost invisible to men. Androstenol seems to work well, especially if you're a taller woman. It's almost like men don't even clock you as female.

I moved this last time because I suspected that the maintenance guy (who lived in the unit right behind mine) was entering my house unannounced. He had a camera pointed right at the window of my second bedroom (which coincidentally happened to be the only movable mount camera in the entire complex), and when I complained and showed pictures of it being pointed right at the window they downplayed me and gaslighted me to hell and back. So, I set up hidden cameras and caught him, and got him fired and then terminated my lease and found the place I live now where the landlord knows my family and knows I have a literal army of big, burly, half-insane rednecks ready to jump if I give them the word.

Whenever I do have maintenance/service people at my place, I hide my laundry, never leave anything they might be curious about out, and any easily swiped valuables get stuck in my safe. I always answer the door in range gear (boots, cargo pants, polo - not flattering) and with my favorite sidearm on my hip. The whole time they're working I'm at my kitchen table (I live in a studio currently, it's big but open and I can see everything but the bathroom & walk in closet from the kitchen area) I will be cleaning the rest of my guns or sharpening all my knives. I mean, I might as well since I'm stuck home anyway, and it really intimidates them to see a woman as well-armed as I am, meticulously caring for her weapons.

For the longest time the maintenance guy at my old complex thought I was a LEO, lol. It wasn't until he figured out I was not that the bullshit started.

I hate when the landlord or any maintenance person comes here. I’m always uncomfortable. Two weeks ago I bought a taser, and yesterday when the plumber was here I had it out and sitting next to me on the couch the entire time.

Last year my landlord had given my number to a maintenance guy to coordinate the repair schedule. He was respectful while he was here, but when he left he texted me to tell me how pretty I was.

My dog is not aggressive at all and is a loveable goofball. We trained his demand-barking out of him soon after we adopted him. However, the one "bad" habit he has that we will never untrain is that he will always bark aggressively whenever a stranger comes into our place. When friends and family visit, we just simply have him meet them outside, let him sniff for a minute, then they walk in and he's ok. After a while he gets used to them and it's unnecessary.

However whenever maintenance, delivery or anyone else comes in or even approached the door he let's em have it (he is always leashed just in case) If it's a long visit, then I will eventually take him outside and chill. On one hand the barking is annoying to everyone at home, however its only temporary and case in point about 2 years ago I had a maintenance guy at my apartment try and enter the apartment without notice. He didn't even knock or yell, "maintenance". I heard him unlocking the door and soon after my dog went crazy. He stopped and my husband went out to confront him. Apparently it was a miscommunication but even if we had requested maintenance they're still supposed to announce themselves before entering a unit.

Fuck that guy he was super weird. But also shoutout to my dog for hating strangers coming into our home. This is why I always recommend single women to own a dog.
