I had a girl friend who befriended a man like this. She would constantly make excuses for him and say “he’s harmless!” 😒

he stopped doing this around me when I finally got sick of it and told him “I can’t argue morality with someone who is dead set on not caring. We’re having two completely different conversations, and I’m not entertaining your sad excuse for an ego boost.” He asked why I was getting so emotional, and I ignored him. He just kept talking to fill the air. My girl friend sat there and did nothing while he just spouted on. I left and never talked to either one of them again.

She’s now pregnant with their third child. She’s lonely because he’s alienated all of his and her friends. He now has a podcast where he can scream into the void for no one to listen, and she’s taking care of everything else while working full time to support his “podcast.”

Beware, ladies. Men like this only care about feeding their egos. They’re narcissists looking for their perfect enabler.

My previous boss tried to salvage something he said by adding he was just being a devil's advocate and I told him I wasn't aware he worked for me 😭✋

A coworker of mine trapped one of these devil's advocates once, and it was epic!

I don't want to get into details but basically he told a story, and Mr. Devil's Advocate rushed in to throw his monkey's wrench into it. And after he was done, the storyteller was like "That's great that you agree then, because Character A, the one you disagree with, is you, and Character B, the one you agree with is all of us, so stop doing (annoying and rude action that everyone in the office hates!)"

Oof. I worked with one of these. The only difference was he wasn’t very good at hiding his thirst for violence, his racism, and his belief that women are the “weaker” sex. He positioned these views as “logical” on the problematic philosophy that “might is right,” and absolutely talked about people as pawns and playthings, creating hypotheticals for himself that are realities for many people not born straight, white, cis-gendered, and into money. The man literally experienced life in easy mode but wanted to be revered as a god for his “logic.” I, stupidly, used to engage with him (weird company environment) and often would make him angry enough to yell and storm off because I didn’t bow and I didn’t think he was as smart as everyone said he was. He was just mean, loud, and used a lot of big words to say very little.

I no longer work there and haven’t seen this man in many, many years. But I’m also done engaging with “devils advocate” men. I wish I’d put up boundaries back then, but I was naive. Not anymore. My time is better spent building up women and engaging in caring communities.

Ladies, cringe cringe cringe confession time but yes I dated one of these. He masked himself very very well for a couple months. But HO MY GOD. When the guard dropped I was horrified to discover this isn’t just a meme—no there is a REAL LIFE PERSON who in fact sees this very meme itself as part of society’s general vilification of straight white men, that society hates people like him so much that they would prefer it if straight white men were dead, and it’s so hard to exist with that kind of hatred & vitriol towards who you are.

If I could go back in time, I would smack myself upside the head SO HARD, but I don’t believe in violence against women.

I have the type of personality that likes to debate and explore multiple viewpoints, some of which I don't necessarily agree with but just want to explore. I think there is a way to do the devil's advocate respectfully and it involves a lot of listening to the other person, something that is very rare behavior in these self proclaimed devil's advocate scrotes. I don't think there is anything wrong with the concept of devil's advocate perse but the way that many lvm deliver it is more often the issue.

Ughhhh I can't believe how many friendships I was in with guys like this. I suppose I was attracted to them because they had the confidence I lacked, and generally they were quite knowledgeable. However, they were only intelligent in the way patriarchy defines it: devoid of empathy or emotion. Since everything stays theoretical to them, they create their own playing field for each discussion. This means their talking points are so disconnected from reality, they rarely have something interesting or valuable to add. I've never felt less inspired than when around them. It was exhausting. Never-ending discussions on serious topics that were taxing for me, and fun for them. My frustration was their validation. They liked seeing me get upset at their lack of understanding. Imagine not feeling anything when talking about male violence against women. Gross.
