I recommend referring to Peter Zeihan. He's a geopolitical forecaster that, annoyingly, only has a hammer, but it's a hammer uniquely fit for your question.

Populations will decrease, in some places faster than others. This can be ameliorated by immigration, but there will be some unavoidable economic pain and restructuring for everyone. The US maybe least of all, as our population decline will be much smoother than -- say -- Germany's or China's based simply on the people who have already been born.

That said, this century is likely to be very weird technologically, and you can't know what might come of such slow moving trends as birthrates without knowing what will come from tech and biotech. For all you know, we might be growing babies in farms by 2050.

Mormons and Hasidic Jews have higher birth rates than the general population in the West. But the main people who are "replacing" westerners right now (in North America, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand) are immigrants from Latin America (where birth rates are also dropping rapidly right now), Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Eastern Europe (the latter two regions also having low birth rates).

Reproduction has been replaced by immigration in the West, for better or worse.

The issue is economic security.. most people don't have marriage and kids on the mind when they are just grinding to make ends meet for themselves. So a marriage is kind of off the table if you are too busy/uninterested in dating because you have a demanding schedule. Also most people don't feel like they are where they need to be financially/growth wise so they aren't looking at relationships seriously because what would they have to offer or someone else have to offer them. So there is that now coupled with strangling economic conditions children aren't part of the picture because kids are expensive. Really expensive.. and would have one person out of a job to raise them or pay high daycare costs so both spouses can support and raise a child. But that kind of strain and burn out outs stress on relationships. Because now both parties are working and who takes care of domestic tasks and childcare?

That's why DINK and childfree movements are so popular because children are a big drain in resources time and energy. Because you get more income more time to do things you want to do and focus on a happy marriage with less domestic labor and more fun to do things together as a couple which makes your marriage happier. And give married couples who want children incentives UBI and subsidized day care if birth rates are so important it should be a valiant effort to raise more children and take some of the burden off of them. Maybe parents get free PTO for child related issues (sick kid, school stuff, no baby sitter) man or woman with children. And with UBI it can afford someone to stay home with a child until the child is of school age. More incentives for married couples like better tax breaks larger tax returns maybe a better rates for getting a house?

If you had a country the size of the US population all living modern lives, using dating apps, waiting until their 30s to settle, you'd see the population dip below 30 million (roughly the size of Nepal) within 5 generations.

Sounds great! Those 30 million could eat as much meat, emit as much Co2 and take up as much space as they want without it being unsustainable. Living quality of those 30 million would be through the roof.

Of course there will be a change in the genetic setup of the populations of the future. Genes that currently make people choose to use contraception and not procreate to increase their own quality of life, will not be present to that large of a degree in future generations. While those genes that, under current conditions, still heavily procreate will make up a considerably larger amount of the gene pool in the future generations.

Up until recently, personal preferences for a life focused on own pleasure had no consequence for reproduction, as that happens just from having sex. Contraception and abortions changed all of that. Now it takes some time before the genes that previously flourished will no longer be present (or emerging in low quantities every generation) in the gene pool.

What is evolutionarily successful "just" changed severely, and the compostion of populations will adapt over the next generations. This goes hand in hand with a drastic cut in population size that will recover later to reach the point of what earth can support.

Okay, NO. FWCs export food, recycle their own garbage, plant forests, and do lots and lots of other useful stuff. Not to mention FWCs are also leading in the amount of electric vehicles and renewable energy. All the horror stories you heard about landfills in TWCs are true, but those landfills are a result of their internal trade. Some European countries used to send their garbage to utilization in Asia, but when some Asian countries banned this practice... those European countries did not notice.

I don't exactly see how this math adds up. US fertility rate currently is 1.64, which ~22% population reduction per generation. In five generations, it's 96 million. Not 30.

If I had to guess…within 100 years western countries will enact laws to promote the nuclear family. I could only speculate what those laws will be. Perhaps they’ll de-insensitive single parenthood by diminishing or abolishing most entitlement programs. They may de-insensitive divorce by abolishing child support and all forms of alimony. If Western countries want to sustain their populations, they’ll have to take drastic measures.

birth rate is way more associated with cost of living than dating culture. birth rates in urban chinese areas are low too, but their dating culture is very different from the west.

If first world countries are that worried about birth rate, they would bend over backwards to support mothers and children whether they are married or not. There would be affordable quality childcare, social stigma around single mothers would disappear and anyone bringing life into the world would be celebrated and supported by society at large.

Deadbeat dads wouldn’t be a thing. Men would embrace the chance to raise healthy happy children whether they share dna or not.

No child would go hungry or fall through the cracks. Right to life folks would put as much energy into actual babies and children as they do into fetuses.

Maternal mortality rates would be a global crisis, not a footnote.

None of these things are what PPD posters who are so concerned about birth rates obsess over. Much like the pro-life folks who are obsessed with gestation, the root PPD focus seems to be on ejaculation with actual fertilization being an unfortunate side effect that one should be able to financially abort.

I'm going to basically copy a post I made before for this one.

In a few years, genetic modification is going to be used to optimize our bodies, making males small (think around 4'4") and lean athletic, and females large (think around 6'5") and thick and fecund. This is physically, economically, and biologically ideal, as they will use fewer resources to support larger population sizes, with exponentially greater fertility rates even assuming only a single pregnancy per woman, as women will be programmed to release several eggs each ovulation cycle and thus will gestate 3 or 4 fetuses each pregnancy. This is why they have to be made 6'5" and thick and strong/fecund, because at that size they can support that level of fecundation.

This will solve the fertility rate problem as well as use fewer resources overall to support a population with the same amount of people.

Surely it bounces back before 5 generations. A family I knew grewing up that was hyper-religious (but also very well parented albeit poor) has 4 boys who all have 5 kids before the age of 30. Those kids seem to all be doing pretty well and on the same path it wouldn't surprise me if the 20 kids each had 3-4 kids. Meanwhile the kids who were less well raised (who seem to be most likely to end up at TRP..) either via neglect or helicopter parenting all have zero kids at 30.

Economic downturn from a shrinking tax base and aging population. Immigration will slow the decline but not stop it as immigrants after first degeneration tend to have lower birth rates. This will only exacerbate the problem further: higher taxes for people still working which will lead to less marriages/relationships overall as people won’t “feel” financially ready, rinse and repeat. Only once the government realizes it’s facing economic collapse, and immigration is no longer working, they will the roll back rights and privileges of women attacking birth control first. Making sex risky again for both parties will fix the problem. Women will actually have to choose good partners again and the majority men will actually have to be good partners to get chosen.
