"Financially independent/contributing wives" was women's idea. To whatever extent men align with it, they are mostly just holding women accountable for their promise.

the thing is, most people have a breaking point. A person doing everything in a relationship (yes, it applies to both men an women) and not being happy about it will breed resentment and long-term will put strain on the relationship.

Once people get in a relationship, most will try to keep that relationship going. So most will try to be fair to their partner.

Because you fail to realize that attractiveness has a subjective component and is heavily influenced by how well women know a man and how bonded they are. What is well documented is how women rate men they don't know personally. It differs when they get to know them. Attraction for women is not just based on physical traits.

You need to find the woman that finds YOU attractive. You should be happy she doesn't find most other men attractive.

I don't see how these two things are correlated? People want equality in the relationship dynamic because more and more people are realizing that there's no type of behaviour or role that's "better suited" for one sex or the other due to biology, as women are perfectly capable of earning money, being leaders, building and repairing things, etc, and men are perfectly capable of taking care of children, cleaning, cooking, doing laundry, etc.

So it just makes more sense for each couple to decide for themselves how they wanna divide these tasks, rather than having an outside force telling them who should do what based on some arbitrary stereotypes. Besides, it just really doesn't affect anyone else how Brad and Janet, Emily and Victor, or Sally and Jack decide to divide their household chores and finances, as long as whatever they choose works out practically.

But then who finds who attractive is... a whole other kinda personal preference. Most people don't find most people attractive. If men had the opportunity to be picky with women, they damn well would be. Their preferences can be pretty outrageous too and not applicable to 90% of women. Like for ex age, weight, body grooming and lifestyle preferences in women. Them "settling for less" quite clearly isn't making anyone happy either.

Most people are becoming independent. Kids are expensive, there's a huge hookup culture, divorce is on the rise and the internet gives people all the entertainment and social needs people want so people do 50/50 because they don't get much out of relationships like they used to.

It’s a little bit of a chicken or the egg. Evolutionary speaking the reason women don’t find men as attractive physically is because they were looking for a protector / provider. To be purely sexually attractive and not require resources they’d only be attracted to the supremely best genes as all women can obtain that in dual mating strategy while ovulating and have provider raise them ideally for her. So it’s not that women are more attractive (a cat or alien wouldn’t see it that way), it’s that humans are evolutionarily designed to see it that way. Men had to be willing to mate with any fertile woman so find a large swath attractive.

Now a lot of equality discussions rest on assumption that we can force or changed evolutionary programming. To an extent we can as we are more than animal instincts but in some ways we cannot completely remove influence.

On a societal level, gender egalitarian ideal sounds great. We’d love for say women to make more money or whatever ideal but usually runs into a biological roadblock at some point

It's never going to be completely 50/50 in any given relationship across a variety of metrics, there are always some things one partner does better than the other partner. For me I lack some things presently and in the past but have made up for it in terms of emotional labor/support to my women and sometimes being more of the breadwinner and they have lacked some things but made up for it in other ways. The best you can hope for is that relatively equal once everything is taken into account so you don't feel scammed.

Because 50:50 is a sustainable system. "women always win in every way possible while men always lose in every way possible" is not because at some point that will drive men to work as a collective. When men work as a collective against women, the outcome is a patriarchy.

Because it might not be worth it otherwise, even if being alone is the alternative. If women fulfill a “traditional” role (whatever that means) usually the man is paying more and she’s giving back in terms of her role, which supposedly he can’t fulfill himself. But if they’re equal in terms of their roles, there’s nothing unique she’s giving back to justify him giving more back.

You could say she’s not giving anything unique back but her sex is more valuable because of supply and demand, and he transactionally has to compensate for that with more money. One small problem is this is impossible for society in the aggregate. But let’s leave that aside. If you really want to make it transactional in these terms, then men can have with prostitutes and it’s going to be 1/99 in his favor. So not being with her is still rational.

The reason men aren't fulfilling those roles anymore is because while women have been largely emancipated and liberated from their gender roles, in contrast men are still largely trapped within the traditional gender roles they always had, except we made it harder for men to fulfill those roles they are trapped within.

Mem expect 50/50 relationships because women say they wanted equality now. If women don't want equality and only want sex with the top 20% of men that's fine, but 80% of women are going to have to either be ok with tharing the same men among them and for those high value men to treat women the same way women treat the rest of the men, or those women are going to have to learn to be alone and not be in a relationship at all.

The atomization of society and having people live their entire lives alone and disconnected from a community and disconnected from a deep relationship with people might seem ok on the surface, but it goes against thousands of years of human culture and evolution.

It seems ok now but it's not going to go well long-term.

Because women themselves have made it abundantly clear that they are emancipated and want to be treated as equals.

I'm happy to treat them as an equal, because it means we both get to pull the same amount of weight. If she finds out that equality is a double-edged sword and no longer wants to be equal, she's more than welcome to become a traditional woman by giving me more responsibility and proportionally more authority.
