When the probability approaches one, I assume we know that this means it becomes almost 100% certain (keyword certain). However, I'll use this paragraph to instead point out what this means more thoroughly. See, when something happens, that does not mean the probability of that happening was one. If we flip a coin, there is a probability of 0.5 that it will land heads. We can flip it, and it can land heads, that does not mean the probability is heads. Therefore, to apply this to our current discussion, when Hitler was mentioned, the odds of him being mentioned were not 1, as there was a good chance nobody would make the reference.

As for your final point, obviously it is not a direct comparison, nobody is saying a woman on facebook is literally Hitler. MaunaLoona was simply pointing out that Hitler used similar techniques, which I don't think is a valid point in any way either.

Conclusion (or: tl;dr): This is not an incidence of Godwin's Law, just someone making a bad reference to Hitler and the Nazis.

It's a screenshot, it's not proof.

I can create a "screenshot" in about 15 minutes showing your mom threatening to murder me if I don't have sex with her.

Screenshots are worth less than nothing unless you can actually link the message to the person (meaning you'd have to get Facebook and her ISP to trace the IP address and positively link it to her computer, and then show that she was actually using the computer at the time and it wasn't someone impersonating her), and after all that, you'd still need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she had actual intent to commit the crimes mentioned in the message and wasn't just messing around or joking.

If you think you can prosecute someone based on a single JPEG image of dubious authenticity, you're utterly delusional... any decent lawyer or judge would tear you apart in about 15 seconds flat and get the case thrown out (if it even got that far, which is doubtful)

And how would you get these? First, Facebook is notoriously difficult to deal with. Second, without a court-issued subpoena, you're not going to get ANYTHING from Facebook.

Assuming that you DID get a "Facebook log" (whatever that means), it would probably only show an IP, which you would then have to get her ISP to trace back to her specific connection to tie the session back to her house/apartment... again, without a subpoena, good luck with that.

Assuming you did get that far, if she lives with other people, how would you prove it was actually HER that typed the message and not her sister or cousin or friend, etc...? Piracy cases have been thrown out of court for less than that, and you bet your ass that SONY has way better lawyers than you'd ever be able to afford.

I just want people to realize you can't just snap your fingers whenever you receive a really shitty message and have Facebook and AT&T at your beck and call... that's just not the way things work.

I think it's SERIOUSLY overreacting to suggest trying to bring up this girl on attempted rape charges because of a few Facebook messages.

I really can't understand how anybody with half a brain would think this facebook screencap warrants a reaction of calling the police, dropping thousands of dollars on lawyer fees and taking off numerous days of work to appear in court (if it even got that far, which it wouldn't).

Except that finding these things out is exactly what the police are for... well, supposed to be for.

His word should be enough for an investigation. If the conversation truly happened then it should still be in some logs somewhere and if it didn't then police would dismiss the case for lack of evidence or if it can be proven to have been fabricated, charge him with filing a false police report. As for being able to prove that she was the one having the conversation, that is up to how much evidence the police are able to gather and what the prosecutor can prove to a jury.

This is not a knee-jerk reaction. By posting a pic of the conversation, he claimed that a crime has been committed against him. I simply listed what she can be charged for if the police found enough evidence to arrest her.

In the end though, I doubt the police would take this too seriously(not too much evidence and he is male) and all it would generate is a police report. This was not just a lewd message. The woman threatened to commit a horrifying crime against him(one that could destroy his life) in order to scare him into a sexual act that he did not consent to.

If the message a man sent, attempted to threaten a woman into having sex, then MensRights would agree that she would have every right to send cops to his house. But many people would point out the double standard. That if the opposite had happened, the police wouldn't do anything. They will politely tell you that they can't / won't do anything.

I mean, I've had friends whose iPhones have been stolen, they looked up the address with "Find my iPhone" and the cops told us to piss off when we went to the police station and said "Hey we know where my phone is, can you send an officer with me to get it back from the guy who stole it?"...... this is just a screenshot of some Facebook message that may or may not even be real.

How can you prove it wasn't photoshopped, how can you prove someone didn't create a fake account using that chick's name in order to ruin her reputation? How can you prove it wasn't her sister or brother using her account without her knowledge? There's so many ways that this chick has plausible deniability it's not even funny.

Seriously, think this through... there's absolutely NOTHING the cops can or would or could do.

To what end? Karma? Seems like a lot of work just for some imaginary internet points. I just don't get why I should go so far out of my way to prove a simple text message that I saw on my cousins facebook and I thought /r/mensrights would have similar feelings as me about it. EDIT: And if you look at the time that the one 'troll' called me out to the time I posted those screenshots to prove myself, is that enough time? 'Cause all I did was print screen, put it in paint, crop it, go to iPiccy and blur out the names. Could an awesome photoshopper/web programmer/whatever put these pics together in that amount of time? How about the mobile uploads screenshot I posted right after he called me out about not showing my cousins wall where it was posted? I posted that one pretty quickly if I remember correctly.
