I think we can agree that women are generally the gatekeepers of sex, while men are generally the gatekeepers of relationships.

I know a lot of couples that started out as FWBs only to develop into a serious relationship over time. This includes, but is not limited to, 2/2 of my relationships (including the one I'm in). For context, I am 22F from Italy, my partners were around my age and also Italian.

It seems kind of unfair that women are expected to "give up guarding their gate", so to speak, in the hopes that their male partner may end up doing the same in a few weeks/months time.

To be clear, this is different from people going from casually dating to a serious relationship; as a FWB situation is one where one or both people have specifically agreed not to get romantically involved, and it includes only having sex and otherwise interacting in a friendly, nonromantic manner. This means no actual dates, no romantic gestures, nothing that would indicate that you are interested in the other person in a non-sexual way.

Questions for starting a discussion:

  • Have you found yourself/know about a situation like the one I described? Do you think it's common?

  • How could it be changed to make it more balanced, as opposed to a woman showing all of her cards and a man showing none?

  • Why do (some/a lot?) young men adopt this strategy, as opposed to the more standard casual dating to relationship path?
