I think the options you have available and desperation reduce standards. Although personally when I was 210 lbs and unattractive I found the same women attractive as I do now at 150 lbs. My standards have not really increased.

Granted the women I really want still aren't available to me without simping. When I break into that bracket of women I might become more selective.

I think you’re ignoring two things.

The vast majority of people will have to settle for someone who isn’t a supermodel. (Because they themselves are not supermodels)
A lot of those people are probably just older and out of shape now. They were probably hotter when they first got together.

I’m not telling you there’s something wrong with you, but my experience is different. In 200 men I would probably be attracted to 50 of them on face value? And potentially another 30ish based on personality? I don’t know, obviously I’m making up numbers to an extent, but it seems clear that my attraction levels are generally higher than yours. I might very well be the outlier here, who knows.

By that metric I suppose you might say that I’m attracted to dudes you find ugly, but of course that’s not the way I experience it at all.

I don't find myself really physically attracted to very many men, i would say 1 in 200 is pretty accurate. It's just not always a typical "hot" guy who i find attractive. In fact most guys who would be considered the hottest by society do nothing for me. After getting to know a number of men who i found really attractive on the surface I have learned that doesn't mean much on its own. It can just sort of blind you to a shitty personality a little longer. Give me someone who is ok looking and a lot of fun to spend time with any day of the week.

There's a difference between the men I find beautiful and the men I find arousing. There's lots of overlap, mind you, but also plenty of disconnects. I've had blistering hot sex with ugly men that have left me desperate for more and make me respect and appreciate the guys.

In my understanding, female sexuality is more holistic. By that I mean that women need every relevant characteristic to be above a certain threshold. They're more concerned with avoiding glaring issues than maximizing any one trait. Men are maximizers. Male sexuality, being more focused on body parts and specific fetishes, is arbitrarily more demanding in some areas but can ignore others completely.

I'd say more than 1/3 of girls I see are attractive to me.

Caveat - I mostly go out to groceries, the gym or the bars/clubs, I work from home.

Tinder says I swipe for almost 50% of the women shown to me.

Caveat - I don't swipe a lot, so I think it usually shows me the better ones.

Sometimes when I match I see I've made a mistake, but other than that I'd sleep and be attracted to all those I swipe on.

For relationship my bar would be different.

Well objectively ugly men tend to pursue ugly women because it's their best bet for pairing up with someone. Are there exceptions? Yes. But they are far and few between. Women on the other hand, (from my experience/observation) tend to shoot for higher in their search for partners. Just this morning I was buying coffee and saw a couple walk in. The guy was tall, in shape and relatively handsome in the face. But the girl was quite overweight, had broad shoulders and so so in the face. And they were (probably) in their mid 20s. You rarely see the opposite of this. A dumpy looking fat guy will not be seen with a pretty girl with a gym sculpted body.

No, ugly people do not find other ugly people attractive. That's in the word "ugly people". Attractiveness is mostly objective. The small subjective part doesn't make someone objectively unattractive attractive suddenly. What you find attractive also does not depend on how attractive you are yourself.

But your own mate value certainly influences who you decide to go for for a relationship, because you know you can't get a mate with a higher mate value than yourself. In the end, you will be happy with your partner, even if you do not find them physically attractive.

Yes, people tend to converge towards their own league, which makes sense.

Think about it this way:

Each one of us has an assigned number in their fore head, from 1 to 10, representing their SMV. They aren't aware of that number.

The ultimate goal is to maximise the sum of you and your partner together, which means 20.

The individuals then approach one another and reject/accept the approachers, according to the value they see on their forehead.

The combined reactions of the other individuals will give each individual a perception of their own number, their SMV. And they will start approaching and reacting according to their perceived number + the other individual's number.

This is the sexual market in a nutshell, and even if you're not aware of it, this is what your brain does.

I personally think that humans naturally are drawn to people we perceive as similarly attractive. Sometimes I see a beautiful model but don’t even really appreciate my “attraction” to her because it feels pointless. Someone like her isn’t going to be attracted to my “plain” self, and I choose to present myself the way I do because it reflects how I feel inside.

I don’t think people on this sub appreciate enough how volatile tastes are among different people. I don’t think conventionally attractive girls with lots of makeup and huge asses are cute.

My type are athletic/fit girls with a more “girl next door” vibe, not overly beautiful, just average, healthy, cute, in shape. Maybe a little awkward or insecure. That’s just what I’m attracted to and these girls seem to be most attracted to me, vs, for instance, “skater guys”, “artsy guys”, “quirky guys”, “laid back guys”. You gotta find your identity and maximize it. I’m a fit, straight edge engineer. Not all, but some girls out there are very, very into that.

Tbh I used to be attracted to the most conventionally attractive, basic, women, but honestly I think it’s a sign of immaturity and superficiality.

This is something I find interesting specifically about queer dating. The more I love myself, the more I gravitate toward women who look like me. It doesn't feel like settling - I've felt settling, lmao. It feels more like I expand my capacity to love and be attracted to people when I accept that I do not have to treat a body that looks like mine as unattractive or unlovable.

That experience is why I kind of call BS on the idea that who we're attracted to is totally out of our control. It's not like flipping a switch, but it absolutely is affected by social dynamics and what we're taught to believe. You can manually open your mind to more possibilities. Most people just don't because they never have to.

Everyone more or less agrees on who is attractive. It's a built in low tech method for assessing physical fitness for reproduction. In general symmetrical features are more attractive, clear skin is more attractive, white eyes over blood shot, etc.

Even babies will gravitate to faces with more attractive features.

Social media has twisted people's views of attractiveness. I bet most men would consider women without makeup on to be unattractive, unless she has perfect skin, 0 acne, no discoloration, perfectly groomed brows, etc. The goalposts keep moving further and further away.

That aside, I consider myself average to below average and I am perfectly happy with a man who matches my level of attractiveness. I do make an effort to groom myself, so I would ask that he do the same. Just because we're ugly doesn't mean we should try for each other. However, we should be comfortable with each other in all our unkempt glory too. Just chilling with each other without having to worry about whether we look good while doing it since that's an exhausting type of life to keep up with.

I'm more concerned about whether we share the same goals and values in life, as well as personality, tbh. I think people here are too obsessed with looks and physicality. My tastes have changed drastically since I was younger so it's not as big a deal to me.

Me I have a large variety of body and facial types that turn me on. I am not everyone's cup of tea. Not everyone is my cup of tea. In LA I might be thought of as mid, in other cities I might rate very highly. It's all relative.

I think everyone finds different things attractive. People who are not attractive to you are attractive to others and vice versa. Attractiveness is hard to measure because it’s personal to the individual. Also people can build that attraction within the relationship through personality. So that person you think is ugly maybe is really funny and caring, making them great people to be around.

I don’t think you’re totally wrong. On the daily you’re not going to see tons and tons of men who are attractive to you, I just really think that not possible. If we really take a good look at the men around us, some are too old/young, some are married, some are not our type/not attractive to us - using all those factors, you’ve eliminated majority of men.

I will say you’re coming across a tiny BIT harsh, I can count on like one hand coming across people I thought were ugly. Most people are just average, not ugly.

I mean, if we are just talking about random men you see out and about, then yeah, it makes sense you only find like 1/200 attractive. You don’t know ANYTHING about them other than what they look like. If you could somehow know all these men you encounter, would you perhaps find more of them attractive? Maybe they’re slightly less physically attractive but have the most perfectly aligned sense of humor to yours, they’re thoughtful and kind, etc.

But based purely on men I see out and about, I don’t find many that are attractive enough either. Idk anything else about them. Of course many men I see are unattractive enough that I wouldn’t be swayed even if most other qualities were perfect. But (to be frank) I personally can afford to be selective. I’m sure there are a good amount of men I encounter who don’t pass my test based solely on looks but are attractive enough that if they had other incredible qualities, I’d find them attractive.

At best, I look younger than I am, and despite what my negative Nancy Reddit posts might suggest, people seem to like me in real life. Not romantically though. That said, I never had the confidence to even talk to someone I was physically attracted to. It seemed like an exercise in futility so I didn’t bother. Sometimes to the extent of actively avoiding them. Some of these guys I found drop-dead gorgeous were conventionally attractive, but most were not.

I think those of us who are solidly grounded in reality know that we can only pull from whatever pool we’re swimming in, whether we like it or not. Luckily there are a lot of other attributes worth pursuing beyond physical looks.
