Lately I've noticed a lot of hot takes from men bemoaning the idea that they're expected to approach women while women have the privilege of remaining passive. They argue that real equality would mean women take the role of initiator in romantic relationships just as often, and the fact that they don't is tantamount to feminist hypocrisy.

The problem is that women are free individuals, and we aren't constantly acting as agents of feminism when it comes to our personal lives. Feminists can promote the idea that women approaching men should be socially acceptable, but it won't change the fact that most women are more comfortable dating men who bother approaching them, just like it can't force women to defy gender roles in other ways, like wearing men's clothing or taking on traditionally male jobs.

There is no injustice or unfairness here. Men are equally free to boycott approaching women, and either women will be forced to start initiating or go without dates.
