Women tend to be too forgiving and give benefit of the doubt way too often, because they try really hard to make the relationship work. But you need two people putting in the effort or it'll be a waste of time. Which she will eventually realize, after the damage was done though.

It is the main reason why watching true crime stuff frustrates me that much. All those con men, psychopaths and murderers do not succeed because they are outrageously smart. In fact it's ridiculous how many reckless, idiotic mistakes they got away with before they were caught. They succeed because their victims - we as a society - have been gaslit and manipulated into being outrageously gullible, naive and dumb over the last few millenia. For every victim of a serial killer there are at least a dozen people who ignored the glaring red flags that guy was exhibiting even before killing the first person. There are at least hundred more who ignored the the glaring red flags and shady behaviours he exhibited while he was an active killer.

We value "being polite" and "not hurting someone's feelings" over our own damn lifes.

It's like teaching sheep "not every wolf" and to be polite and give the benefit of the doubt to every single predator that approaches them and just "communicate" and "forgive" and be "understanding of their tough childhood" and then being completely suprised that they all get eaten. They didn't get eaten because wolves suddenly became smarter. They got eaten because we taught them not to listen to their natural instincts and to instead put their own lifes at risk so the wolves' feelings aren't hurt. Sure, not every wolf is going to eat them. Some are just passing through, some grew up among sheep and see them as family, some don't like mutton, some aren't hungry, some don't have teeth. But newsflash: It doesn't take all wolves to kill the sheep. It takes one.

Most women around the globe grew up in this environment. Most women grew up surrounded by LVMs and this is our "normal", hence why we can't see the blatant lies and glaring red flags. We didn't see enough truthful men to have a frame of reference. We are desensitized and often unintentionally ignore red flags because it is "normal" to us.

Not to mention that we're socialized to put ourselves in their shoes. We're told from the time we're little to have compassion for the hard-working men around. That we shouldn't expect them to do X as well. To let them have some space. Naturally, we also shouldn't be demanding and selfish, either. And besides, it's so much easier to do X task yourself than making any man do it.

The vast majority of men can't keep the act going for a single date 😂 Hell, even before then. They'll drag their feet with making effort regarding asking you/planning properly, then show up late or underdressed or talk about themselves the entire time or neg or mansplain let some misogynistic bullshit slip.

But after being on FDS for a couple years, I can categorise them so easily. So easily! even just from their profiles, from our first interaction, whatever. Honestly, it's possible you'll end up with a sociopath, but with a bit of clarity on your end, so very highly unlikely. The shitty ones aren't all that smart, and they're all the same.

Thanks for saying this. Most guys don’t even have the fortitude to plan and pay for a first date from beginning to end. It’s extremely rare that he would have CIA-level stamina to con a woman for years with no slip ups before dropping the mask...you’d have to be the target of some special gov mission. Why would a man just not take the path of least resistance? There are so many women who only need a month-long con to get hooked. That’s much less work for them.

The signs are there over the years, and the mask slips before a “point of no return” escalation- the women just ignore the signs. If you got a one in a million con man, you almost have to admire someone who can seamlessly pull off such a scheme over such a long period of time.

No sense in stressing over being struck by lightning. If such a rare thing happened to me, I’d pounce on the opportunity to get a book deal out of it 😅

It must have been when I just stopped trying to be the Good Wife with first husband Peter (mid to late 20s) that I adopted this mindset of seeing things and people as they actually were, not as I wanted them to be. And what a difference it has made in life.

It also made a difference when I started withholding feelings from the outset. Maybe because I have a Valentine's birthday, and it's just expected of women anyway, I had thought I was romantic. I am not at all romantic. I'm not aromantic (or sex-negative asexual), but I'm a hell of a lot more pragmatic, a thinker far more than a feeler. My version of romance (with Jack, of course) was long discussions about everything, lots of laughing, horrible jokes, bad puns, literary allusions, historical allusions, tons of speculation. It was predominantly verbal, with lots of deep listening, laughter, appreciation. I don't need and don't care about props like roses or candlelight at all. A good conversation for me is seductive. Peter never gave me any of that; in fact, all of his "communication" was either sarcasm, which I despise, esp since he used it against me to keep me at a distance, or just basic, functional "we're out of bread" type talk. Just utterly blah!

When I stopped gaslighting myself, and started seeing people, especially men, as they truly were, and not seeing them through a rose-colored haze, life got immeasurably easier. It was the death of my youthful idealism, but so worth it.

I agree with this for LVM. They're usually the bumblers or, at worst, the more histrionic/sociopathic Cluster B types. They can't fake it well - because they only fake it to get women. The rest of their life is fairly above board - the mess you see is the mess you get.

I disagree for NVM - negative value men (actual antisocial / psychopathic types). Every minute of every aspect of their public life is a mask tailored to that person or environment. You're not the only time or person that they're masking for. The whole "empty eyes, soulless gaze" thing is hype - many are warm and charming people. The true psychopaths (estimates range from 1 person in 20-100, mostly male) can be convincing to a degree that is not detectable unless you do know what to look for (it's a different list than what you'll use for LVM).

And they're deeply dangerous for two reasons: (a) they don't drop the mask until you are hooked or trapped, and that *can* take years (years when you are observing him be as amazing as possible), and (b) they're not just grooming you - they're grooming everyone around you, so even if you start to wise up, your entire social and socio-economic life can be dependent on you remaining accessible to / friendly with this person because everyone else is under their sway now.

When they do drop the mask, it won't be them going from housework to no housework, or showering to not wiping. It will be them suddenly spiking your dinner with drugs one night, resetting all the clocks back 43 minutes while you're passed out, pulling a spark plug out of your engine, clawing their own cheek wide open while you sleep, then going to work with their facial injury and telling everyone you did it and are passing out (see these photos on my phone! he will say) and they don't know why and they're so scared and hurt for you. This will happen literally 18 hours after they publicly arrange an amazing birthday party for you in front of friends, and cook you an incredible meal in private ... just like they've done every single birthday since you met them.

You could go tell everyone around you what he did.... no one will believe a word you say because all of your stories about him are so ridiculous and extreme. He will be surrounded by men and women who would swear that he's HV. You're the disoriented one who is rolling into work almost an hour late ... are *you* okay? Other people are often so resistant to the idea that this person they like has duped them, that they will eagerly and gladly hurl you under the bus, help him take your children, funnel him information on you as you scramble to escape.

A book I recommend a lot is Don Hennessey's "How He Gets Into Her Head" because he also talks about how NVM get into *your* head and *his* head and the minds of everyone around the woman. He calls them "psychephiles" because their grooming tactics extend to everyone in a woman's environment and are shockingly similar to those of pedophiles. The reality is that, if one clocks you as a target (either as a victim or an accessory through grooming), you're likely *not* going to figure them out in time. Believing that you will ... only makes you more vulnerable.

The closest things I've identified as red flags for truly NVM con men are: are the women he's been in long-term relationships with relatively non-social, washed out, tired, quiet, or twitchy and quick to explode? That's a red flag. Also look for the men in his group - are there more than one who have ex wives or ex girlfriends that lost custody of mutual children / have been institutionalized for mental issues post-marriage/ become homeless or addicted to drugs or alcohol after a divorce/breakup? All red flags - many women fleeing abusive men have addictions; they numb to survive the war zone in which they live and the abuser encourages it, knowing it can be used against her if she tries to escape. Many of the more psychopathic men hang with men who rank similarly to them on the antisocial spectrum (this has been studied), so you'll find the same patterns of destroyed female lives among more than one of their exes.

Healthy, successful people tend to be surrounded by their equals. A man whose closest, intimate, private circle of people is flustered, exhausted, hysterical, chaotic messes is probably the issue, regardless of how angelic he seems and how amazing his more distant social circles may be (this principle works to evaluate dangerous women as well).

This is a "why not both?" situation. If you tend to rationalize other people's lies, yeah work on that, but there are some very practiced con men out there and it's stupid and dangerous to tell yourself otherwise.

If you don't believe you've ever met one I submit that you probably know at least one and are still being conned as a result of your complacency. They're not that uncommon. Don't underestimate these people just to make yourself feel secure and in control, false senses of security and control are the MOST common forms of "self-gaslighting".

The Dark Triad wannabes can f*ck off. They’re not as great and infallible as they think they are.

ETA: always be ready to LEAVE. It doesn’t matter if the man was great for 2 years, the MINUTE he acts up, walk out the door. Even “normal” people change with time. People break up all the time.

You HAVE to love yourself all the time, more than you love anyone else. It’s your DUTY. If you don’t look out for you, no one else will.

Men will use you, abuse you, and LAUGH AT YOU for letting them/not “choosing a better man” keep that in mind the next time you think of giving a LVM a chance. Society will laugh at you and blame you for your own choices. So make the right ones.

The trouble with really good manipulators is that they will start letting their mask slip once we are HOOKED. That time frame can vary and they wait until we are INVESTED to start revealing themselves.

Con men are actually extremely good at what they do (they have been at it since childhood) and can dupe even the females who generally keep their with wits about them, usually.

It's a psychological process, essentially brainwashing, that can work on the best of them.

So yes, we should absolutely be wary of meeting these types and not understanding what we are dealing with. I'm sure any girl who's actually been through it with a true con will say the same.

Yes, this happened to me while dating and then married. Major problems showed up around 18 months into the relationship (when he started ignoring me sometimes, then often), but I was young and dumb, and honestly, it was the sunken cost fallacy. I had already been with him this long (and we had moved in together) and I just hung in there. Then things got way worse after marriage. This would NEVER happen to me again because the second someone started to devalue me and make me question my worth and disrespect me in many ways I would realize that this was the signal to leave (not to discuss, change myself or go to couples' therapy as we did). You can't fix someone else or make them happy with themselves or you after you are in the relationship. You just have to cut your losses and goooooooo. In hindsight, should have left after two years when I saw it was not getting better, only worse.

I literally just watched my best friend go through this and gaslight herself into staying. Her shitty, alcoholic boyfriend of 6 months blames her for his financial irresponsibility and emotionally abuses her. He wants to “work on things” and had promised to “see someone,” which I guess means a therapist. And y’all, she’s buying it!!

When he’s in one of his moods, he’ll use weaponized incompetence against her and/or is viciously mean. When called out, he of course has no idea what she’s talking about, even says “I’ve never thought about it” when he clearly knows exactly what he’s doing. The lies would be comical if it weren’t my best friend’s life. He’s had a few DUIs which set him back financially years ago and hasn’t been responsible anyway. What do you want to bet he’ll take it out on my friend when he realizes therapy ain’t cheap and will cut into his drinking budget?

I’m rambling. But I’m also torn. Yeah, men often act like idiots toward women, using the least possible effort to lie about the dumbest shit… but we keep buying it. Maybe not all of us, but as a collective, women allow this nonsense, even look down on women like me and many of us on FDS for the block/delete and zero tolerance strategies.

I don’t know if we’re totally right, but I do know I’d rather enjoy my life as it is than shoehorn in an unaffectionate, alcoholic, emotionally abusive, avoidant jackass. I also know that most people don’t change unless they really, really want to, and that it takes double effort after 30 and triple after 35. Ladies, you need to etch that into your hearts if you’re dating after 28 or so. What you see is what you get.

I was just thinking about this fear earlier today, and my conclusion was it is vital to have a variety of support systems in place if/when one is partnered, because one will never know what the future holds. I encourage women to have one's own bank account with a growing savings account, have a way to earn money, become educated about financial literacy, hold a variety of friends and activities outside of our primary relationship, practice self-care that promotes health, and promote anything else that one holds dear such as religion, spirituality, meditation practice, pets, etc. I actually would put health at #1, because without health all the money in the world doesn't really matter.

We should build our lives up so that we have a stimulating, fulfilling life with or without a partner. I agree with this post; most men will give tells and we need to be open to it and heed the signals. I also think that some men are very, very good at hiding their dark side, and they turn toxic to us years in. It is frightening but if we keep growing and developing our own brilliant and independent life we can handle it if it happens. I once had a therapist and I told him I didn't trust people. His response was "It's about trusting yourself -- anyone can be tricked" and I believe he was right.

P.S. If a man negs you in any way in the first few encounters (either text, phone, in-person) I see this as a huge red flag. He's showing you the best he's got, and it's not good.

It's not an unreasonable fear. I was conned by a psycho who acted right long enough to get me married to him and moved far enough away from my family/friends (aka support base and reality checks) that he thought I was trapped and could let the mask slip.

There were signs while we were dating/engaged, but they were small and anytime I would call him out on them he would straighten up and it didn't happen again. 1.5 years of dating, 1 year engagement, about 9 months of marriage before the abuse started, right after I moved across the continent to his new duty station.

Then, once I was 2000 miles away from any person who loved and cared for me, he started wearing me down bit by bit. He alienated me from anyone that would call to check on me, did his best to drive a wedge in between myself and my family for obvious reasons, and kept me in a constant state of survival stress autopilot so that I didn't have the energy or bandwidth to put it all together. Meanwhile he cheated on me constantly, tried to force an open marriage, financially abused me to the point of breaking, and then threatened to have me committed anytime I would voice my unhappiness.

After he overdrew my account by $900 one day and I couldn't make our mortgage payment, I got a separate account that I never told him about. I saved over 35k in one year after that. This was with me paying the majority of home utilities/expenses because I was the only one responsible enough to do it. The whole marriage he blamed our being broke on me. Whatever dude.

After he nearly blew up that new house while trying to replace the gas water heater, then got pissy when I kicked him out of the garage until I was done fixing his fuck-up, I realized he would never be competent enough to help me renovate the house, so I quit asking and did it all myself.

After he tried to forcefully initiate a group sex event that we had discussed and he knew I was not comfortable with nor would ever comply with, I told him that was the first and last time he would survive such misbehavior. I kicked him out and he lived in the barracks for 6 weeks, while we went to a couple's counselor (ordered by his command). He straightened up enough to make me and his command happy for a while after that.

After one of his NCO's told me 'You're nothing like [the ex] described, I thought you were a huge bitch until I met you' I realized he was an abusive narcissist talking shit about me and everything started to fall into place. I had known this NCO for about 6 mos at this point, and he seemed decent enough to be taken at his word. I sometimes wonder if he just wanted to have an affair.

After I realized that I dreaded the ex coming home from deployments (to the point of tears), I realized I would be happier single and planned my exit. I waited until he was deployed and moved home without his knowledge. My 'friend' in his unit who hated his guts (he was not nice to people unless he wanted something from them, and he burned a lot of bridges he shouldn't have with people he worked with) sent me pictures of him cheating on me while stationed overseas, then I slapped him with divorce papers. Spent a year fighting that fight, luckily he was overseas so while it was a curse at times, it was more of a blessing that he couldn't get to me. We only communicated through lawyers, a condition of mine, and when he broke that I recorded all the conversations. When the judge heard how he spoke to me he waived the waiting period for the divorce to be final.

It's been 5 years and I still get debt collectors calling me trying to find him. It took me a full year to have all the fraudulent credit accounts he opened in my name closed and removed from my credit history. I still get random ones popping up that I have to fight every few months.

I have been told by many people I grew up with (small town southern USA, I'm related to everybody) that he refers to me as 'the toxic ex' and will regale anyone who stands still long enough with tales of how I twisted his innocent requests for a threesome and never gave him sex so he was forced to seek other alternatives, how I controlled all the finances, hid assets from him, overworked him, on and on ...... I kinda went nuclear on FB before I shut down all my social media so that he couldn't harass me there, and tagged him in the pics of him cheating overseas. At this point he is digging his own grave with people back home.

At this point I will never marry again without an extremely favorable pre-nup. As in I get everything if I decide he's not up to par favorable. It's just not worth the bullshit otherwise, and I'm still battling major PTSD from my first go-around. I'm finally back in a great place after all that, and I can't see the sense of fucking it up for the possibility of dick (which is another disappointing story considering no man has ever given me an orgasm).

He had 2 beers on our first date - later became an alcoholic. Nothing wrong with drinking in moderation but my gut said this was different. They were expensive beers - he lives beyond his means and was in substantial debt.

I knew and married him anyway. It did not end well.

No one is perfect all the time and this is why consistent dates are important. It's easy for him to be Mr. Smooth when you guys are only seeing each other for few times a month with a date that lasts less then 2 hours.

Imo it's important to have a long date at least once a month with someone if you're dating them in terms of a LTR/commitment. I've yet to meet a guy that mask doesn't slip after he thinks you're comfortable.
