Ex Child Support Enforcement Agent for Baltimore City here.

In Baltimore you are more likely to retain custody as a woman, even if you have history of heroin use and live in poverty than a man who is clean and makes a moderate sum. Fighting it is absolutely insane, and the vast majority of successful cases I have seen usually involve fighting for custody when the mother is in actual prison.

The time it takes to adjust child support alone is insane. In Baltimore City if you do not pay your child support, they suspend your license. Except you know, if your working for a union or jobs are slow at the moment (this happened in 2011 when the port was basically dead) You know that great 100k job you had? Well, now you can't do it because you don't have a license.

You can appeal for it, you can go to court for exceptions, but how the hell you going to court without money to begin with? Public assistance in this domain is extremely overloaded.

Now are there scenarios where the man is an absolute piece of shit? oh yeah those exist.

The more common ones is a woman with her nails did, coming in and bitching about the struggle of her children holding a brand new iphone when shes on welfare.

Ive seen the reverse to, where both people get together and apply for child support because the man makes zero money and wants to use it get free childcare while they are not 'together'.

The whole system is a clusterfuck, and there isn't a clear solution to anything. Id rather gamble on lottery tickets, because thats about how it feels in court.

As a Man who has been fighting in family court for 3 years, I can honestly say that the worst things that have happened to me were agreements that I made on consent ( i.e. we settle, not a decision from a judge in a motion) because the man is exhausted and afraid, fearing that this is the best we can get so be grateful.

Every time I stood my ground, made my X produce evidence to substantiate her claims etc, she got destroyed.

Many Men go into their first case conferences so convinced that women have the upper hand that we agree to whatever, so long as we get some visitation, then spend the next few years and tens of thousands trying to undo those unfair access and support agreements.

Men need to do better when it comes to showing patience and using long term strategy in court. But it's hard after years of emotional abuse and torment.

When I countered this with ALL of women's reproductive rights and options, she said fighting for men's reproductive rights was a waste of time and I should instead try to fight for more contraceptive options for men. When I responded that even THIS motion is met with heavy resistance by feminist lobbyists, I was banned from the subreddit.

Also I do agree worldwide that we need to revisit the custody agreements and how they favour women more.

I spent a majority of my childhood with my abusive mother, she had 3 x DUI, had the cops called on her multiple times by neighbours when they heard her abusing me, and was clearly not right in the head and while my father wasn't exactly an angel I know he would have stepped up to raise me in the best way possible.

It's not fair and it is RIDICULOUS.

Unfortunately about the abortion thing, I would have to say it is definitely the woman's right since she is the one carrying the baby and going through labour to give birth to the child. Try to choose a partner that wouldn't abort just for the fun of it, and be very thorough in your birth control (condoms, vasectomy etc) do NOT take the woman's word for it that she is on birth control unless you see her take it every day. Cumming inside isn't worth it.

But for those who have done the above and have still ended up in that situation, you have my deepest sympathies.

Keep fighting and one day hopefully we will see something that resembles equality between men and women.

Science has enabled females to decide when and if they ever get pregnant and/or have a child. The laws did not catch up with this for men and also give them a choice.

Due to this severe oversight, women can now decide men's fate, which is total bullshit.

If you ever argue some dumbass about this, they'll say men had the choice when they have sex.. but sex doesn't consent to having children.

They'll also say you should have wrapped it up - but that only helps the female with her 100% responsibility of pregnancy. Also, she can decide not to have sex if you're not wearing a condom.

We are all responsible for our own bodies and what we do with them. Pregnancy just so happens to be a condition of the female. Thus, she should take full responsibility for it. In practice, she kind of does, as she has full control over what happens. The bad thing here is that men "magically" have responsibilities after the birth even though they had no choices beforehand.

Responsibility only pertains to choice.

I have no idea what is going to change things. I think that lawyer being killed recently for being a men's rights activist will set us back some if nobody takes his place.

Men tend to just keep going forward and dealing with it. We don't cry out as victims like women do. Thus, we aren't heard so much. We need to do something, and I don't know what.

One of my best friends in high school got a girl pregnant. He wanted to adopt, she wanted to keep it. He was really serious about adopting but had absolutely no say. Anyway, she had the baby and he wanted absolutely no part in raising the baby.

He literally is still tortured to this day from his family about what a crappy person he is for "abandoning" his child by his greater family. His real crime was having sex. There are options like adoption out there and list of potential adopting parents that are huge. He simply had no choice in the matter. It was all on the mother. I feel bad for him.

I think there should be a legal option before the baby’s birth, where the male can, in absence of the option to abort, sign away their rights to custody of the child, in exchange for not having to pay child support. If the man can’t have legal input on the choice to abort(which I think should be the decision of the mother) they should have the choice to back out of the relationship legally.

I think the reason you don’t see many talking about this is everyone gets to control their own body.

For men that control, barring rape, is when a man chooses to have sex.

For women that control is during carrying a baby to term. Which is why the general reasoning is women get to choose when/if an abortion happens.

As a society we view women as more of the child rear-ers. Partially due to breast feeding and the physical toll pregnancy has.

So judgements of child support tend to move money from a man to a woman.

I do think that the woman should listen to the man's opinion and reasons about abortion. Make it an actual conversation, consider his choice/opinion. If you two are on the same page, that's great. If the relationship is strong, maybe you two can actually raise a child. But maybe she can not. Then I think the man might have to accept that. Don't put your girlfriend/wife through something that she really doesn't want to go through.

And to the women: Don't make it a "only I choose" thing when you have a trusted boyfriend/husband because he is a part of it. If he's an abuser though, f* him and do what you think is best for yourself.

As a female I find myself being the only one to discuss mens rights when the topic of reproduction comes up. I have been told a number of different things but have yet to hear a solid reason that's not based of gender bias why it is the way it is. At least a man should be able to sign away his parental rights without a judge being involved, a judge isnt involved if a mother decides to give the child up for adoption.

I do want to say it is not always one sided, but majority of the time it is. I have on example where the mother wanted to give the child up for open adoption. She added the father to the birth certificate so he could also be part of the open adoption. He was able to then go to court and stop the adoption process, which forced the mother to keep the child. I will say in this case it was all around bad for the child as he skipped out on her life 6 months after she was born and the mother gave the child to family to be raised as she wasn't equipped to raise a child. This is the only case where a man had rights that I have witnessed, but it is a bad example to use in debates because the father choose to be a deadbeat in the end.

I agree that most of these suck, except the first one. I didn’t even know all of this was a thing, and it should definitely be more equal. But I definitely think a woman should be able to end the pregnancy sooner against the wishes of the partner, as being pregnant is really damn heavy on the body. I’ve seen comments saying that they would carry the pregnancy if they could, which is great, but unfortunately that just isn’t the case, and we have no way of changing that. Being willing to do that if you could, doesn’t change the reality that only people with functioning uteri can carry a child, and thus I think during pregnancy a woman should definitely be allowed to choose what to do with the child. Mind you, if she decides against the wishes of the father to keep it, I don’t think he has an obligation to pay up.

Another side of this is that abortion is viewed as this “easy way out”, but it really isn’t. I’ve heard plenty stories of women being depressed after getting an abortion: it really is not an easy choice for everyone. Adding to this then, I do think the woman should try to listen to her partner, and in general have a calm and understanding discussion.

Lastly, the issue lies with sex education and the availability and usage of protection. If the couple didn’t use protection, it really is on both of them: they knew the risks presumably, assuming the educational system didn’t fail them (guarding against the exception that either of the parties lied to or coerced the other into not using any). However, even protection sometimes fails, which is when you would then still get these discussions.

Still, if more people knew about protection, if more options were readily available, then we could drastically decrease ridiculous discussions about parental rights of unwanted children that strongly prefer one party, and fewer women would feel the need to get an abortion, which is not a great experience to have.

Until that is possible, I agree that laws should change to treat both parties more equally on most points. I stand with another commenter here that most feminists agree with most of these points, I would just like to add that most of us don’t ever even face these problems from the man’s side for obvious reasons. Thus, since what feminism wants is equality, it’s a good idea to keep bringing up such issues, so we don’t miss it.

I've talked about this with fellow female employees. I gave an example of if two consenting parties have sex and the female gets pregnant but doesn't want the baby but the male does, because he understands his consequences have actions, the female should carry the baby full term and relinquish custody to father and the woman should pay for child support. They disagreed because of the physical effects it has on a women's body and sometimes psychological effects. I told them wouldn't men go through the same thing raising a child? There's almost no time for yourself anymore when having a child so the physical effects and psychological effects would last longer right?

They disagreed again and said it's not fair to the woman. I said it's not fair to deprive someone the right to be a parent of they are willing to take the responsibility. I told them if a woman can do it then a man should too. If you want equality what better way to show that there are good men out there instead of treating them like 2nd class parents.

I am all for equality but I have to say the reason we are out of the equation is because it is the womans body and she is directly tied to these decisions in ways the man is not. IANAL but I dont think that a paternal father would be refused custody if the mother gave up her rights. I am sure there is a ton of what ifs and nuance to this but that just makes writing laws that much more difficult.

Financially and judicially they do face discrimination in the child courts and separation proceedings but to suggest that a man not being able to abort is taking their rights doesn’t make sense to me. It’s impossible for men to have abortions because they don’t carry children. Also men CAN choose to give a child to the state if the child cannot be raised safely. Why does this say they can’t? I do somewhat agree with the idea of “legal abortion”— that a man should be able to legally sever ties with a child. However, the problem with this idea is that the child will have to bear the burden of growing up in a single-parent household, with all of the financial struggles that often entails. There’s no easy answer.

That said, there’s no reason why a man should be able to stop a woman from getting an abortion. The physical toll that pregnancy inflicted on a woman is too great.

The first 5 on the other hand are ridiculous. To be in that situation you made your choice. Your choice was the have risky intercourse with another individual, or some other arrangement that caused you to be in that situation. Once you put your lil seed in that person you have made your choice, and there is no more choice for you. You could choose to not put your dick in someone, you can choose to use protection, you can choose your level of risk by using certain protection vs others vs none. You made lots of choices to get to that position, don't try to pretend you didn't.

Its like giving a gift, you make all the choices and decisions up and until the point you give the gift to the recipient. At that point it is no longer your gift to decide on. You could be allowed input and advisement on that gift but it isn't yours by default anymore.

It seems quite common that when a relationship breakup happens courts almost always decide that the children stay with the mother and the men have to pay some sort of child benefits. It's hardly ever the other way around.

I agree regulations are a problem for men, particularly about not being able to take custody.

That being said a lot of these seem like they could be avoided from wearing a condom or using a form if male birth control. These seem to be oopsies likely from ineffective birth control and men can control that with condoms, pills and vasectomies.

Then, if a baby was wanted that would be a conversation and intention to go off of male birth control. And if that happens and they had a conversation about intentional pregnancy and she backed out then absolutely, these things are important.

I've just seen too many situations where a man complained about condoms, or said they would pull out and didn't (because he didn't want to wear a condom) or a woman is uncomfortable with all the side effects of the pill but he doesn't want to do the birth control himself. Then an oopsies happens. I've seen many times where the guy said he'd be there and backed out. Etc.

So, before we fully go into this conversation I think it's important men are as responsible for birth control as women.

I can tell you that men being forced to care for the children they breed in all situations is a lie. It may be anecdotal to some, but my father just disappeared. I've never seen his face, and almost ended up in foster care because my mother was an addict, likely contributed to by the fact she was sexually assaulted, and abandoned, by multiple men.

So go on boys, complain about women's rights, when a large portion of you don't take responsibility in the first place. My father is a ghost, he robbed me of a chance at a half way normal life.

It is, and will always be inhumane, to force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term she does not want. Having my daughter almost killed me, and I wanted her. I still tell the story to display what it's actually like. I can barely imagine what it would be like, to be forced into a life threatening medical event, because women are not viewed with the same level of agency as men under the law. I'm all for men's rights in custody court, but to begrudge women their right to bodily autonomy is inhumane.

If women had more than a 60-80 years is being able to actually pursue any career en masse then this wouldn't be an issue.

I was under the impression that in most states you can sign over your parental rights and do not have to have any legal or financial responsibility to a child. This of course does not solve everything, there would be some level of attachment once an actual baby was born making that decision wildly challenging, but men do have a right to give up their parenting rights- women do too! Edited to add, men can also take responsibility in preventing unwanted pregnancy just like women- there are many safe and accessible options!!

Because she's the one that grows the kid she should be able to choose whether to have it or not. If she does have it, guess what, is most likely due to consensual sex or rape - she should still be allowed to decide. And if she has it, well, it's your damn responsibility to assist with the kid in some way. Her aborting a fetus she can't support is not the same as us giving up our rights because we don't want/cant to support it either. Only one of us really gets the short end of the stick.

Oh, she may have done the raping? I am dating a man with a child with his ex. He was 17 at the time, she was nearly 20. Obviously I don’t know the whole story, but what he told me was they had a conversation about not using protection and she told him she would get an abortion if she got pregnant. Obviously she got pregnant. And suddenly an abortion would go against the church and her morals (she’s Mormon) and she did not have an abortion, even though he BEGGED HER, offered to pay for it, drive her back and forth, and check in on her afterwards.

He did not want to be a father and stated that multiple times, and she went ahead with it. Then came the threats, that if he didn’t marry her he would never see his child, and she threatened to kill or stab herself in the stomach while heavily pregnant.

He decided to be in this child’s life not because he wanted to, because he felt society would shun him. His parents were pushing him to do “the right” thing and be in his child’s life. Now, the relationship is struggling, the drama is real, and we’re both feeling like shit all the time because we don’t know the “right” thing to do. He wants to sign away his rights and pay child support. He’s currently paying more than he even should be (40% of his income) and she won’t file for child support and threatened to call the police on him recently since he’s not seeing his kid because he’s suffering mentally. Why is she even surprised that he doesn’t want to see his kid anyway.

I see women all the time complain that their baby daddy that is not currently in their kids life said he wanted an abortion when she first got pregnant. Like how DARE HE speak on what he wants?

I've helped raise kids that weren't my own, on my dime. No kids of my own, full disclosure, but frankly that's also been a choice.

Most of the men I know who have found themselves facing one of the other situations, "oopsed" their way into it by fucking around with someone they weren't really planning on spending their lives with. Oftentimes, "fatherhood" is the only thing that pulls their head out of their teenagish games and really gets their asses in gear - a little too late.

To be clear, I dont pity the "moms" either - excepting rape victims. "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes"... so many people step right up...

The last point, yes, absolutely a point. Wasn't necessarily my situation, but I would feel extremely put upon to be forced to pay for a child that was not my own, voluntarily conceived, or from a sperm donation.

If you have sex and there's an accidental pregnancy, you either stick around to help with the kid and pitch in with providing for your new kid, or you can let the woman make decisions regarding what's in her own body. I’m a bit confused by some of these. Men can and do often choose to leave during pregnancy and when the child is born. 95% of single parents are female. Am I missing something important here, I feel I must be. The second one- no one says to men to keep it on their pants if they don’t want a child. Women are always berated that way. The court system is hugely unfair on men, and that will soon hopefully be rebalanced with groups fighting for more equality. Women have now reached positions previously held o ly for men. Now is the time for men to reach those positions previously held by women. Once that happens then men and women will be seen as equally capable parents

Taking this point very seriously, let's try a thought experiment (caveat: I don't profess to have any good solutions I just want to expand the discussion). If men have an equal say on what happens when sex => pregnancy, how would the law then handle situations in which rape leads to pregnancy? What if the woman says its rape but the man insists it wasn't? What if the relationship involves domestic violence (either way - women can abuse men just as men can abuse women)? What if pregnancy could endanger the life of the woman and the man doesn't care? It seems to me that laws aren't very good at handling nuance; instead, they're blunt objects meant to resolve situations expediently. Thus, the most expedient solution to the question of who gets to determine if pregnancy continues would be the woman who has to carry the baby.

My friend takes care of her daughter full time. The father doesnt pay child support or even want to spend time with his kid. She doesnt want to go after him for child support since he tells her he is poor. So what should she do in this case? He doesnt want to give up his right as a father either. She told me the one time she let him spend the night over so he can be with his daughter, he was molesting my friend in her sleep. Since then he hasnt been back. He was always a deadbeat who spends months without wanting to see his kid. Shes always the one trying to ask for him to see her.

It's leaving out the initial choice to copulate. It's incredibly easy to not have children, as regardless of gender. And if you want to bring up that men can be raped, well, yeah that's possible. And that's not legally protected. And, like, a child still exists and needs raised. Like, you can't just say "oh well" and toss it in the woods.

Also, while I believe this varies by state, in mine fathers are eligible to receive child support from the mother. Judges have slowly been reducing their bias towards women in custody cases. So the last point isn't true. The law is that the child has a right to support from its parents, not that one parent is owed support from the other.

While I understand the sentiment, I have some issues with this graphic. Simply putting "cannot choose" doesn't really specify the issues men face when it comes to custody and financial liability for their children. For example, this graphic says that women can choose to not be pregnant and men can't. That's a ridiculous statement because males are biologically incapable of being pregnant, so of course they can't choose not to be, it's impossible. Secondly, it is offensive to tell a woman to avoid getting pregnant by "keeping it in her pants," as if women are not entitled to have sex without getting pregnant. Men are also capable of abstaining from sex and if they don't want to risk being liable for a child, then abstinence is a pretty good method. Or you could have sex and use protection like the majority of people do.

If you want your arguments to be taken seriously you have to make them coherent, and this post is not.
