We will ban subreddits that allow their communities to use the subreddit as a platform to harass individuals when moderators don’t take action.

Incredibly vague, as usual.

[–]germaneuser 246 points247 points248 points 11 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Considering that /r/AgainstMensRights actually generates a list of active users in this sub (essentially doing exactly this) to target for banning (and who knows what else) (source), how is that subreddit not already banned? This is ridiculous.

[–]BuddhaB 60 points61 points62 points 11 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Wow, that is quite remarkable. do they really think they are fighting the good fight or are they just power hungry? There is absolutely no analysis of what these users are posting. There are people that post on /r/mensrights that are here for general information and/or debate. Surely association with this subresddit doesn't mean what they are positing is inflammatory. This is just plain bigotry on their part.

[–]FreudJesusGod 53 points54 points55 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

When you believe you are part of an oppressed group, you justify acting in extreme ways by referencing the "they are out to get us" belief. It cuts off the "critique" portion of the reasoning process and jumps directly to the justification stage.

So, yah: they really do think they are "fighting the good fight". They view contrary or critical viewpoints as an attack and circle the wagons ever tighter.

This is why it's so hard to reach bigots. Anything you say is immediately filtered into "Us vs Them".

[–]A_Beatle 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh the irony

[–]AlaDouche 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The irony here made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that, it was certainly unexpected.

[–]Revoran 39 points40 points41 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

With a name like "against men's rights" you would think at some point they would sit down and think to themselves: "hang on a second, are we the baddies?"

They could have called themselves "against misogyny" or "the anti-bigotry club" but they chose "against men's rights."

[–]eDgEIN708 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That would require self-awareness.

[–]iMADEthis2post 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

hmmm, does againsts women's rights exist I wonder..

We could test this.

[–]Big_Apple3AM 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I went there and was polite and asked genuine questions and got banned within an hour. After asking the mods why I got banned, it was even worse treatment than I expected. They were like "boo hoo" go cry somewhere else. It's practically hate speech in there sometimes. There's some really harsh comments they make about people they know nothing about.

[–]rKremlin 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nazis hate people. Its their whole identity. They love censorship more than almost anything. Except murdering people. Show me someone who loves censoring people and Ill show you someone who just might be a nazi and too stupid to realize it.

[–]bloodshot_eyes 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nah, they're just fanatics, in the truest sense of the word. It has never occurred to them that what they are doing is wrong. In their view, anything bad done to us is good, for we are bad and deserve it. This mentality is a poison, and I will not be a part of it.

[–]PM_ME_UR_PMS_BB 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's the same thing that happened a while back, some guy is arguing with a feminist, the feminist (I believe so, anyway) is asking for proof, citations, statistics, all these things, the guy arguing (Well, it could've been a she, I forgot) gives statistics, proof, all these things, and the feminist replies with something like "nice copypasta".

Now, what does that have to do with what you said in your comment? I forgot which subreddit some statistic subreddit or whatever, gets on and starts to shit on this guy's statistics on their subreddit. So, he goes there, argues, and since the argument was posted on /r/MensRights and people posted the link to that statistic subreddit shitting on that other guy, more people came and argued.

Except they weren't able to argue. That subreddit has a bot that goes through where you post, and if you post in subreddits like /r/TumblrInAction and /r/MensRights, they see absolutely no reason to argue with you because you're so obviously a transphobic misogynist bigot. just because you posted in a particular subreddit.

[–]scemcee 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Lol, I had no idea that such a stupid sub even existed! Its really quite funny, but also a bit sad how some people can become so hateful and wretched. But, stalking and harassing individual redditors? That sub needs to be banned.

[–]rKremlin 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Its pretty pathetic really. If your whole purpose in life is just watching what douche bags like us are doing, then your life really blows. Hate to say it. Nazis should never be censored. Their contribution to society is showing what people like them are.

[–]AltenbacherBier 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nazis should never be censored

Furthermore censoring people allows them to put up strawmen to push themselves into the corner of the seemingly oppressed. Open dialogue in which both sides are involved is in my opinion the only way to solve problems. When you allow one side to enclose itself or enclose it, it will create echochambers.

[–]scemcee 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i think we need it to keep us on our toes, and to hold us accountable for when we are in the wrong.

But seeing as we rarely are in the wron, the subreddit is kinda just a weird hateful circlejerk. still something we should have though.

Sounds like it was written just for SRS, though I doubt they will ever get any repercussions considering how they are buddie buddies with mods and admins site wide, as well as very sympathetic of the reddit CEO and her causes.

[–]skabbo 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly its funny. The new FPH subreddits are being banned one after the other, meanwhile Coontown, PanicHistory and SRS are still around.

Furthermore the claim that this was about harassment is horseshit because I think one or two of the subs they banned had less than 200 members. There is no way in hell that these subreddits had more reported upon legitimate harassment than SRS has.

[–]MonkeyCB 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

SRS should be first on that list. Bet they won't do shit about that.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points31 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I used to occasionally view FPH, but never commented. I have to admit it was a guilty pleasure. It was a huge sub - much larger than it's subscriber base would lead on. It would routinely have between 3,000 to well over 4,000 users on at any given time (that's higher than nearly any of the default subs).

HOWEVER - there was one thing about it that I found quite unappealing and, I suspect, was the reason for their banishment. Over the past several weeks they got into the habit of posting an unflattering picture on the side bar of a "target" for derision. While I think anyone can survive the humiliation of having a posting up for a couple of hours, leaving a picture on the side bar for days at a time was just plain abusive. No one, regardless of how much "fat privileged" they might have, deserves that kind of abuse.

[–]AltenbacherBier 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

^ That ^ I was a few times there and commented a bit. The thing is I never hated fat people just for being fat more or less just for this Fat Acceptance and HAES bullshit I came to even know of the sub. I think many people on there a often as delusional as the people who go to an alcoholic or drug-addict and just say to them "It is so easy, you just have to stop drinking yourself to death." Really I think HAES and Fat Acceptance are utter bullshit and should be banned like anorexic models or tobacco-ads, because they praise an unhealthy lifestyle. On the other hand I found

got into the habit of posting an unflattering picture on the side bar of a "target" for derision. While I think anyone can survive the humiliation of having a posting up for a couple of hours, leaving a picture on the side bar for days at a time was just plain abusive.

was a absolute bullshit move. I know I know the sub was dedicated to hating fat people, but I found this putting up of individuals as if their fat was morally corrosive behavior just plain wrong.

[–]mattreyu 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I gravitated (lol) there because I got tired of fatpeoplestories when I'd see stuff like "be me: 240 lbs but working on it. be fatty: 250 lbs of gross fat". I mean it seems hypocritical. So I went on to TalesOfFatHate, and occasionally FPH. I think they posted way too many pictures of fat people, I mean if you say you hate them why are you dedicating half of the subreddit to photos of them? I just want to be against HAES and Fat Acceptance and Effyourbeautystandards type stuff.

[–]AltenbacherBier 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean if you say you hate them why are you dedicating half of the subreddit to photos of them?

Because they want to mock them. They do hate them, but hate can also be an obsession (but featured with comments below it like "Argh man I can't look at that obeast" makes it just look childish). Nonetheless many of them just seem like idiots, but really looking at HAES bullshit it can't be blamed that also a backlash against their bullshit evolves. The tour they are no going with exposing fat people in the reddit staff or imgur staff and saying they are all just against them because they are fat is silly and ad hominem, but it shows that this reddit anti-harassment policy in the end will just make matters worse, create unnecessary drama and eventually ruin reddit. I don't think FHP was a good community in sense that is enriched reddit and stood for free speech (although I find it necessary to stand up against the Fat Acceptance nonsense) but this self-righteous nature reddit is now putting on itself will just make it worse. The best way to help your enemy is to actually ban your enemy, because that allows them to put up strawmen and live in echochambers.

[–]Zitroneneis 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fatpeoplehate could have been called Tess Holiday hate (a third of posts would be against her).

Mensrights does not target one person like this so I dont see it getting banned.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This. The ban had nothing to do with being mean to fat people in general, but rather being insanely obsessed with a handful of online celebrities.

[–]xNOM -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ok, now I have to Google Tess Holiday :-)

The message to this sub is clear: The moderators are required to be far less hands off. If simply messaging the admins is insufficient to get us banned (and I'm confident that's already underway) they will make fake MRA accounts and commence harassing themselves from this sub.

[–]wanked_in_space 34 points35 points36 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anti MRAs would EVER do that and suggesting that is misogynistic.

[–]Shiningknight12 29 points30 points31 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that /r/fatpeoplehate had very proactive moderators. They had rules against linking to other parts of Reddit or revealing personal information and they strongly discouraged people from going onto other sites or subreddits.

[–]Dripsauce 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hope that will backfire. Remember when TwoX went default and they tried that shit? We only know because an admin actually called out their BS - remember that they can see when people are using socks.

[–]realsbeforefeels 78 points79 points80 points 11 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Ehhh... this is pretty dodgy territory. I don't know a whole lot about FPH, but I know that it was bigger than this sub (150Kish iirc?)

It is not easy to balance these values, especially as the Internet evolves. We are learning and hopefully improving as we move forward. We want to be open about our involvement: We will ban subreddits that allow their communities to use the subreddit as a platform to harass[1] individuals when moderators don’t take action. We’re banning behavior, not ideas.

Their definition of harassment, from the citation:

Systematic and/or continued actions to torment or demean someone in a way that would make a reasonable person (1) conclude that reddit is not a safe platform to express their ideas or participate in the conversation, or (2) fear for their safety or the safety of those around them.

Now feel free to correct me if I'm building a strawman here, but this appears to imply that several negative comments/posts made on a sub directed towards any individual/group, regardless of whether the content of the posts is legitimate criticism, could be sufficient to get a sub shut down.

If this is the case, there are a plethora of subs that could potentially get axed. This rule is extremely vague and as many have pointed out in the linked post, seems to be selectively enforced as several smaller but nastier subs have escaped the banhammer.

I don't know if members of FPH have legitimately gone out of their way to harass others and the mods have allowed this to happen. But I think nuking a 6-figure strong subreddit plus lurkers because of the actions of a few and questionable moderating is overreaching massively.

I guess we'll see what other subs fall in the coming weeks. Hopefully this sub won't be one of them.

[–]Psionx0 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

regardless of whether the content of the posts is legitimate criticism

That's the key here. It's the new definition of safe space. Safe space used to a concept of "I can be what I want without being attacked." It didn't include a legitimate challenge of ideas done in a non-aggressive manner.

But, since SRS has gotten their grubby little paws on everything the new definition of safe space is "I can do what I want and say what I want regardless of whether it's factual, or real. All that matters is whether I feel like I am right."

[–]BeornPlush 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"I can do what I want and say what I want regardless of whether it's factual, or real, and be free of anyone calling my bs."

That's the itchy part.

[–]EllenPaotriarchy 81 points82 points83 points 11 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link

The mods of FPH were extremely, but appropriately, harsh towards any of their members who attempted to step out of line. When offmychest started banning fatpeoplehate people, the mods of FPH started lurking in offmychest to ban any FPHers who tried anything stupid. FPH followed the rules to a T

[–]Cu_Gorm 47 points48 points49 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I didn't like them one bit, but I see no reason they shouldn't be allowed to talk shit on their own corner of reddit.

[–]dubman42 30 points31 points32 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

They started showing up in /r/all. That's why they got banned.

[–]Bondofflame 23 points24 points25 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I agree that they clouded the /r/all a little to much but no reason to ban them. Could've just banned the subreddit itself from /r/all. That's what happened to /r/conspiracy.

[–]EllenPaotriarchy 30 points31 points32 points 11 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

And now /r/all is 99% hatred of fat people. Well done, reddit.

Edit: Nevermind, they just banned fatpersonhate and the fatpeoplehate2,3,etc subs

[–]b_wayne28 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a simple way to get subs banned. Get some people to masquerade as members of a sub you disagree with, and go start commenting and harassing users in other subs. It really wouldn't surprise me if this is what happened. We've seen tumblrinas try it, what makes anyone think SRS members wouldn't?

[–]freedomfreighter 130 points131 points132 points 11 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

If men's rights is banned, I'm leaving Reddit. It takes a truly sick individual to claim that a sub that talks amongst itself about real issues is "harassing" others.

[–]RationalSocialist 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right there with you.

[–]tectonic9 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seconded. I don't even spend much time in this section; but if censorship destroys this forum, then Reddit in general is not a place of free and open discussion and I'll certainly take that as my cue to delete my account.

If Reddit becomes a ghetto for schoolmarms and SJWs, there are other places to go, and it'll only serve as one more call to action for perspectives that are marginalized online.

Same. I'm already on voat somewhat, but I'll move completely if they do that.

It would certainly be interesting to be on the other side of this, to see this through the executives' eyes. I can't fathom what must have been offered to people for them to sell their values like this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Says the person posting in a thread started by a man who mods /r/womenhate

[–]RaginCajunProdKrewe 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Which is why the title of this post is ridiculous in the first place.

[–]BlacknOrangeZ 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

OP is fairly active on /r/WomenHate, maybe even a mod? He's probably worried that that subreddit will be banned (judging by the name alone I'd say there's a very good argument for it) and wants to pre-emptively conflate this sub with that one.

To which I say fuck off. He's the type who gives so many ill-informed people the excuse of branding us all "misogynists", because he actually is.

[–]dvn1138 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not only is he THE mod, hes the only one to ever post on it and he has 80+ posts in three weeks. This has to be a faux account trying to create a correlation between that sub and this one because i refuse to believe this guy is real.

[–]RaginCajunProdKrewe 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And here it is with 716 upvotes...just, how...

Really what could be going through someone's mind when they're starting a subreddit and titling it "WomenHate" that says, "this is a good idea, my life's going to be better because of what I'm doing right now!"

[–]rafay_M -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Or maybe he's actually doing you a service.

The thing about misogyny is that its not really a thing that people will ever ever limit to actual cases of woman-hate or give up when they can't find em anymore. It is an entirely arbitrary moniker for whatever the people it confers power to don't like. One shouldn't give that moniker OR the movement that uses it active respect by seeking to appease it. One should actively throw shit in its face. Because you can never appease it. Ever. Nobody will ever like mens rights. So stop putting energy over chasing the self-policing targets they set you. Stop being fucking shamed and stand down over arbitrary standards like this. It is not mensrights job to police its members just as feminism stands strong despite having millions of undesirables in its ranks.

Now I don't approve of womanhate, I actually prefer approaches from subs like /r/theredpill. Where hyperbole and polemics are the language of choice. Forms of defiance to the established rhetoric is not a bad thing. You are actively the target of it yourself every single fucking day when hategroups about MRAs and their concerns are set up.

[–]marswithrings 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

actually quite to the contrary, i believe this movement to be better than feminism because people like /r/blacknorangez call out bullshit when they see it. i have never seen a feminist say something like he just did and it's people like that, that kept me coming back to this sub after i first found it. because something was different about this movement, because people actually cared about issues and facts and not arguing with feelings.

we can't lose that. i would say we can't become TRP, but i'll even go a step further and say we can't become feminism. i have a lot of problems with that movement and a lot of them are because of things like how they don't speak out against misandry in their ranks. how at best they just pretend all those undesirables aren't really relevant.

there may be some point at which we worry too much about trying to clean up every little idiot because realistically that's probably not possible, i realize that. but to suggest that self-policing the movement to stop things like people thinking this is the right place to be if you're a sexist woman-hater is somehow appeasement is ridiculous. at the end of the day, we are what we repeatedly do. if we allow people to repeatedly post misogyny then the answer to that stickied post about why people hate this sub is going to be because all the shit they say about it is true.

thats leads to how this sub gets a lot of its traffic, quite frankly. people accuse it of being a terrible cesspit and when some curious soul comes to see how bad it really is and they realize it's not the septic system of reddit, they stick around and they learn about the real issues.

nobody is "standing down" here, and certainly not over arbitrary standards. like the other comment said, he's calling OP out for posting to a subreddit that explicitly says it's about hating women. it's not like some feminist tried to slap OP with the label to undermine the post. do not conflate actual misogyny with the crocodile tears of professional victims who are trying to make the word as meaningless as possible

[–]rafay_M 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That is a well-thought out and reasoned argument and it legitimately changed my view. I will admit, as a red piller, I was told by people I really respected that your movement is composed of feminist opposites and sycophants and if I come here I'd be pounced on and shamed out for being RP, but the tolerance and lack of reaction was surprising and... appreciated. Its an alien feeling as a RP, tbh.

While, at the core of my being, I do believe men replicating the kind of sympathy feminism and its victims enjoys is near impossible... and I do believe creating a movement for men's rights is a fruitless struggle, I have a bit of respect for you guys.

May I ask though? What gives you hope? What makes it seem worthwhile? What prospect of future success do you hope for? Outside of your space, you are hated as much, if not more sometimes, than we are. Introduce yourself as an MRA and watch the downvotes fly. How do you cope with continuing to be patient and negotiating with such a sustained PR campaign against you?

We handle it because we're not a movement. We're only in it for personal success. But you... if you're in the least invested in this as feminists are, you should be crushed everyday.

[–]marswithrings 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess I would say I handle it because I consider modern feminism a failure on almost all fronts. it has been a long time since I've seen feminism make real progress and it has increasingly lost the respect of the general populace as it has become increasingly misandric. why would I expect this movement, which is already behind feminism in popularity and power, to fare any better using the same tactics?

feminism suffers from similar accusations as the MRA. they are just less impactful because it is a larger more established movement, and because of the difference in how society feels about and reacts to male vs. female victims. men cannot garner sympathy and support in anywhere near the same magnitude as women. I think this means if we follow the path of feminism, we fail. we have to do something different, and I think the best way to do that is to not have the same problems feminism has.

and of course, I can't ignore that I'd be a giant hypocrite for complainig about so many shortcomings of feminism if i failed to speak out against the same things in my own spheres.

so trying to simplify all that, it seems clear to me the MRA will see no success if it simply goes the same route as feminism. and TRP like you said is more about personal success and not a movement exactly; right or wrong I expect that will have little impact on society or the unjust laws and standards I think need to change. personal success might work for you but to me it is short sighted. Im scared of the prospect of having a son right now, and bringing a male into a world that will hate him simply for being born.

I'm not just fighting for myself, I'm hoping this helps future generations. even if no laws change due to things I say, maybe helping the movement to walk the straight and narrow will help give it the respected history it needs to stand up against accusations of misogyny. maybe even enough respect that it slowly gains the power to affect change.

so i have hope because I have to, as I don't see a real alternative to address the problems we are dealing with in our society. and I have hope because I believe the facts support this movement, and while I realize that many people are too indoctrinated to accept those facts, there are still and always will be rebels who challenge the status quo.

I hope that makes a little sense, 'what gives you hope' is a heck of a question to answer from my phone (sorry for any typos)

[–]BlacknOrangeZ 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ok, let's say "misogyny" has lost its proper meaning and has instead been adapted as a tool by some. Let's say I stop using that word.

Use whatever words you like, OP is still a mod with all 25 posts currently on the front page of a subreddit titled "WomenHate". So he's a self-confessed woman hater, right? I don't understand how that's any kind of stretch to say that.

Is that the kind of person we want representing or involved with MRM in any way? Doesn't that actually do it a lot of damage?

I sure as hell don't hate women, I don't hate anyone unless the individual gives me very good reason to. I consider myself a good person, why the hell would I want anything to do with OP?

[+]BearWithHat -21 points-20 points-19 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What do you call going into other subreddits to attack and harass people? I just saw a thread in fph2 near the top talking about which subreddits to harass.

[–]freedomfreighter 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I.. what? I don't know that sub. What were they claiming to want to harass? How do you know they were from this sub? Not making a whole lot of sense.

[–]Macismyname 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dude report it to a mod here, that's not okay.

Also what's fph2?

[–]GarneyBumble 54 points55 points56 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The chairman of the board, Alexis Ohanian called this specific subreddit a "Hive of Misogyny" of course you are next, they are just setting the playbook up and figuring out how the PR falls when they take down one subreddit that is easy to crush and keep most people out of the argument.

The reason they only took down 5 subs this time is because this is a trial run. Any sub can be filled up with subscribers working together to forge the appearance of harassment coming out of a sub and have it fall afoul of the incredibly vague new rules.

The admins just threw out the 'no brigading rule' by admitting in the post that SRS does a lot of it but is still not going to have anything done to it, aside from reddit inc working on 'new tools' in the distant future.

You are next because you are not monetizable in an IPO. Geico and Unilever want nothing to do with you and never want to risk having your content appear at eye-level with that which they are paying to put on the site.

I warned FPH in a meta post that front paged on that sub right after The Open Letter leaks came out and the mods said "We enforce the rules, we'll be fine", but didnt see that the whole point was that the rules dont matter, its all a sham in the face of getting reddits revenue inline with its traffic potential.

[–]droden -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

so what's the best course of action? rage quit reddit?

[–]logic11 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

voat.co

However right now voat is getting slammed with traffic. Seems like a huge number of folks are coming to voat right now, almost like reddit is experiencing a mass exodus.

[–]BruceCampbell123 34 points35 points36 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I highly doubt it. Say what you want about r/MensRights, we're not harassing anyone.

[–]iNQpsMMlzAR9 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

According to the definition of rational people, no. But take a look at this article, which was published a little over a month ago:

https://archive.is/W0YsY

(Direct Link) http://motherboard.vice.com/read/reddit-cofounder-says-women-haters-on-reddit-are-deplorable

In it, Pao is referred to as receiving "intense abuse" from the userbase, the article is from the perspective of Reddit's cofounder bemoaning the misogyny (sound familiar?) on the site, and this sub is specifically named as being a hotbed for it. So the admins came out today and said they're banning subs for harassment. But they in no way promised that's what they're going to limit the scope to in the future.

We want as little involvement as possible in managing these interactions but will be involved when needed to protect privacy and free expression, and to prevent harassment.

This would absolutely fit into Reddit's vision of making the site a "safe space", which they were explicit about in said article. I'm with those that feel this action is merely setting the stage and testing the waters. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we start seeing subs that in no way harass getting purged in the future.

[–]Nougat 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If what was going on a month ago was "intense abuse," I can't imagine what they'd call today.

Perhaps the admins should ban reddit because it's harassing Ellen Pao.

[–]baserace 40 points41 points42 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh son, the naivety.

[–]yummyluckycharms 21 points22 points23 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Harassment can come in many forms. Disagreeing with people is a form of harassment because you are challenging their world views - a viewpoint that feminists and SJWs use to silence dissent

[–]Tak7ics 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

oh so the feminism subreddit should be deleted pretty soon then

[–]yummyluckycharms 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I highly doubt chairman pao will let that happen

[–]adelie42 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. It sounds like a ban based on mods not doing their job that arguably could have legal repercussions. Despite whatever hate may be thrown in the direction of MRA, this is a completely different fight.

Not going to say I like the policy, and don't like the direction in general, but looking at what was banned and not banned, the victim card is being played a bit early here.

[–]Overkill4000 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The mods here take a strong stance against harassment. While we allow np.reddit.com links for cross posts, this is no different from /r/bestof, or any number of other subreddits. In fact, we have far, far fewer cross posts.

Beyond that, we cannot control users who choose to bypass these rules and harass people on other subreddits. We don't let doxxing occur here, we ban people who are here just to harass others, but there is only so much we have the ability, as moderators, to do. We don't have access to private messages to see people who harass users there.

In the end, we don't have much control over this. I think that, while much of Reddit doesn't necessarily approve of this sub, Reddit would require evidence that this sub is harassing people to stand for it being banned, especially before SRS and AMR, both of which were mentioned more frequently in the comments there than MR.

[–]Cu_Gorm 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm scratching my head as to why you trust the reddit mods sense of fairness so much. Do you really expect them to apply the same standards to SRS after all this time?

[–]eat-less 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

FPH had a strong stance against harassment as well, and we didn't even allow np links nor even mentioning another subreddit. The mods did everything they can to prevent being banned

[–]ParaBDL 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I didn't either. I've followed this sub and never really saw anything harassing about it. But I've seen hate for people challenging any feminist point on my Facebook as well, so I can understand there might be. For some mere challenging is considered harassment.

What does that have to do with this sub? It is not relevant for this sub. The topic is clearly a valid point for this sub as there have already been posts made by people wanting this sub being banned. What does it matter for this sub what people do outside it?

If they decide to remove the subreddit for MEN'S RIGHTS, they are taking a pretty controversial stand on the subject and I doubt their userbase will tolerate that. I know we don't have an extreme amount of users, but word of men's rights being removed will go around.

The thing about the Men's right's movement is that it existed before reddit and it would easily "regroup" in that, this isn't even the only or oldest portal, however it is currently the most popular. Not too concerned about it. Also, just look at /r/all

[–]nopedotswf -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But how long will they keep it up before they get tired? All this is going to do is get stricter moderation and people will get bored and forget in a few days.

Edit: The stream of posts has already slowed down. Reddit is generally quick to anger and quick to forget.

Even if MRM was banned most users would probably not leave and the admins know it.

[–]misterwings 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I already have my contingencies in place. But I think there are a few more subreddits that they will hit before they come for us. I think KotakuInAction is a bigger target and will probably get hit first. If that one goes down then be very worried.

OK. So the fatpeoplehate was banned why? We're the moderators breaking the harassment policies (by systematically targeting another redditor)? Because all it would take is for someone to make a throwaway account (or more) and harass another redditor in the name of MRA' s. I would hope the investigation to harassment claims would be thoroughly processed.

[–]realsbeforefeels 43 points44 points45 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I suspect part of the reason FPH was targeted was their size, and the fact that they sometimes made frontpage. I think this is a case of reddit wanting to 'clean up' its image by removing 'distasteful' subreddits that could potentially make the front page and be seen by the general public.

[+]wtf_hell 11 years ago [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

They put pictures of the imgur moderators on their sidebar yesterday, specifically singling them out for harassment. Throwaway accounts are one thing, but when it appears on the sidebar of the subreddit it pretty clearly happens with the approval of the moderators.

A few of the moderators are still publicly posting, and aren't denying it at all.

[+]Il128 11 years ago* [recovered] (14 children) | Copy Link

The sad thing is what you're speaking to never happened with FPH. It was just an ugly subreddit they wanted to ban. The reason is false.

[–]kestese 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

First off, this ban wave was about FPH. The other ones are just banned so they can say it wasn't about FPH.
FPH was most certainly a subreddit that harrasses a group of people, but it's not the only one but I believe the most popular one.
You can check in the thread, there were a lot of mentions of similar subreddits which were not banned.

The real reasoning could very well be of financial interest.
FPH was obviously against unhealthy food and companies that represent them.
Reddit has to advertise in order to make profit, and reddit has to make profit. It's a company, and a companies interest is profit, which reddit lacks.
If reddit choses to not ban other harrassing subreddits, this is most likely the reason.

[+]WillAlwaysLie -30 points-29 points-28 points 11 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I'm OK with this.

[–]nybo 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm not, what happens in a subreddit should not really matter as long as the members aren't going into other subs and harrasing/griefing users. Banning FPH sets a precedent for bans, and the extremely wide definition of harrasment set in the rule means that they can target pretty much any sub they don't like, including this one.

[+]WillAlwaysLie -14 points-13 points-12 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Then this sub should moderate itself to a certain standard. Intolerance towards intolerance. Of course FPH had certain times when they were right, but plenty of others where they're just plain wrong. The same goes for here. If people don't like that, then they should keep in mind that reddit is a liberal website that answers to no one but itself and they're free not to use it.

[–]nybo 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

reddit shouldn't claim to be an open debate forum if they can't handle differing opinions. If they so badly want to reduce the site to /r/SRS and /r/aww then they should just cut the bullshit and close down all other subs.

[+]WillAlwaysLie -12 points-11 points-10 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

And our politicians should do what they promised us they were going to do, but life isn't perfect and everyone has their own needs. The only one you matter to is yourself at the end of the day.

[–]nybo 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So we shouldn't call out politicians for lying either?

[+]WillAlwaysLie -8 points-7 points-6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Of course we can. But that doesn't really change anything now, does it?

[–]nybo 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just give up, just lie down and let life kick you. Don't make friends they might betray you. You'll probably call yourself realistic, but that just means you've become cynical with no fight left in you. Why even be on this sub if you don't believe you can change anything against the odds?

[–]WillAlwaysLie0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I am an optimist. But I don't particularly care about the morality of battles I'm not fighting and, to be honest, I mainly just said that as a bullet point. Men's Rights aren't particularly my battle, but I support certain things in this sub. I'm on this sub because it points out hypocrisy, but the odds are, for the most part, in man's favor.

But I admit, you're right about the fact that reddit shouldn't claim they are a free speech forum. It's just that, from a business aspect, it makes no sense for them to do that and anyone who goes against their belief is basically going against the current society. They're also banning things I really dislike, so that doesn't hurt.

[+]wtf_hell 11 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Then you should be ok with SRS, a sub that actually brigades and harasses people getting banned too, right?

[–]WillAlwaysLie -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Allegedly they had started harassing the imgur mods who had been removing their images when they would hit the imgur front page.

[–]ndstumme 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I'll quote you /u/AndThatIsWhyIDrink over at /r/OutOfTheLoop

http://np.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/39bzdf/why_was_rfatpeoplehate_along_with_several_other/cs2c14q

Yesterday imgur decided it would be a good idea to block /r/fatpeoplehate images from reaching their frontpage. /r/fatpeoplehate did not like this. They got details of the imgur staff and put them in the sidebar for the users to attack imgur staff with. Reddit responded by banning /r/fatpeoplehate for encouraging attacks on individuals, as well as a bunch of other subreddits for the same, I presume those subreddits had some spurious links to the same drama in some way.

...

This has NOTHING to do with reddit censoring content, offensive material, or just disliking those subreddits. They just enforced the rules they already have in place - Don't attack individuals. This was not a subjective situation, the moderators of /r/fatpeoplehate broke reddit's rules and they paid with their subreddit and accounts for it. /r/fatpeoplehate2 will continue to exist for as long as it abides by reddit's rules. Reddit does not have any rules against the content of a subreddit being offensive, just that you can't send thousands of people to attack an individual using your community.

EDIT: np

I believe so. Being a mod means responsibility. Judging by other comments, FPH mods are being irresponsible.

[–]Kill_Frosty 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I always find this argument funny. If a mod ever leaves there are thousands ready to do their job for free for a small feeling of power of an user base.

Of they feel it is becoming something they want to be compensated for, then it's time to move on to other things and let a fresh mind take over.

[–]adelie42 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But given that it is in a respect a punishment of misbehaving admits, wouldn't it require many "people" making posts in MRA advocating for the harassment of a person AND the mods taking no action?

[–]EvolvingRedneck 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe so. The problem, as others have stated, is the new policy is vague.

[–]giveupitscrazy 11 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

I think on the whole there's a few important reasons behind banning fatpeoplehate.

For starters, it was against the subreddit rules and resulted in an instant ban to show any sympathy or consideration for a fat person.

The equivalent here would be an instant ban if someone agreed with anything no matter how obscure a feminist said. Obviously we do, and allow that kind of discussion, at fatpeoplehate you were immediately banned for it.

Their rules were specific that you were not allowed to say anything that wasn't hateful towards fat people, or simply irrelevant on the subject all together. Also if it was discovered that you were fat, regardless of how much you professed to hate fat people you would also be banned.

So the end result is people perpetuating horrible stereotypes, and opinions with absolutely no recourse for their actions as due to reddit's brigading rules and this subreddit's banable offenses, there was no avenue to discuss some of the hateful things said.

Some can claim censorship, ok, that's fine. others can claim they had a 1st amendment right, sure. But at the end of the day, I think it this sums it up well: http://xkcd.com/1357/

Either way, I don't see how we'll be "next" unless they're going to grossly overstep from where they started. We invite discussion, debate, and conversation as it pertains to a subject we feel strongly about. We're not harassing a group for simply existing, we're fighting for rights for ourselves.

[–]potah 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why on earth would this subreddit ever get banned? To me, it's the complete opposite of harassment and aims to support. As a female, I support this subreddit and I agree with most of what I see posted.

I have no reason to think so. No harassment ever happens on this sub. If they approach their "harassment" policy that way, I think Reddit will lose most of its user-base within a year.

[+]Il128 11 years ago* [recovered] (19 children) | Copy Link

It's really not about "harassment" it's about political correctness and SJW's getting their way. SRS flat out threatened Reddit admins with a FPH bomb. http://imgur.com/QkWNtvt

[–]Fetish_Goth14 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's why they also banned /r/neofag, which was an anti-sjw subreddit.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

What's a FPH bomb and SRS? Sorry, newb.

I don't know what r/FPH was, but it sounds from the name like the kind of places where people might post pictures of fat people to make fun of them? Is that correct? If that's true, to be frank, I am not surprised at all if they've removed it.

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link

The issue is the FPH didn't harass anyone directly. If a fat person chooses to read its content then they may well be upset. But it's their choice to visit the sub and read. The sub is called 'fat people hate' so its pretty obvious what the content will be.

The problem is that the admins banned FPH because they disagree with its content, not because it harassed anybody. A further problem is that ban is said to be about harassment when that didn't happen. Obviously the definition of ban worthy harassment doesn't involve harassing anyone so the admins aren't being objective.

If actual harassment was the target then /r/ShitRedditSays would be the biggest offender (SRS is ShitRedditSays). The idea behind the sub was to highlight people saying shitty things on Reddit but it's become a clique which persecutes people who hold opinions that it doesn't like. It has doxxed and harassed people in the past and has never been touched by the admins. It is probably the most toxic, anti-free speech sub on reddit.

Another notable (but far less significant) offender is /r/AgainstMensRights. A sub who's entire purpose is to mock this sub. It's quite happy to target specific commenters. I'm not sure if its ever been shown to engage in doxxing.

[–]Hamakua 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

/r/AMR has a list of the most "Active" (gathered from a couple of years ago) users of /r/MensRights on their side-bar, I know, I'm on the list.

The whole thing is hypocritical bullshit and the SJW's on the admin staff are just making up justifications that fit their personal narrative.

[–]germaneuser 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, it's still there, AMR is "AgainstMensRights" and I just checked after getting your message and it is up and running. 285 active right now.

With only 7000 subscribers, it means it's a satellite subreddit joined at the hip to a much larger subreddit. /r/mr for example has almost 13 times as many subscribers but only about 40% more active right now.

Lol, I have similar conversations with my wife, who is a feminist. I feel you brother.

However, the vast majority of Reddit's userbase is male. If they start banning subs that aren't committing any infractions of the rules just because they feel like it, Reddit will empty. It wouldn't surprise me that the simple act of banning this site would drive out 50,000-100,000 users. That alone is massive.

Now SRS's sole purpose is to single out and harass individual Redditors. Seriously, that's literally all that sub does. Not banned. This is a political agenda nothing more nothing less.

[–]__pizza__ 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

FPH didn't harass anyone? Are you delusional? Some girl on tumblr made a video about FPH, and they put her on the sidebar. Imgur said they were no longer hosting their content, so FPH put the Imgur admins on the sidebar. I don't know what your definition of harassment is, but posting everyday people and putting them on a website to make fun of them, sure as hell sounds like just that.

[–]AlphaWookie 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

They are public pics that is how the world works you put an idea out there and people get to be critical. Besides "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

They were taking pictures of people out at the store, zoo, gym, etc., and pointing and laughing at them. A large majority of the posts I didn't have a problem with, but when you take candid picture of people in public, and make fun of them, that is over the line. If they want to say 'healthy at every size' is retarded, go for it. But as soon as you start picking on people just existing for being fat, putting them on your website, and publicly shaming them, there is an issue.

They didn't attempt to contact imgur, they just called them fat sympathizers and put them on the side bar to ridicule. How else do I expect them to appeal a ban? Uh, in a slightly more mature way than calling them shitlords and making fun of them? I don't know.

[–]Elvick 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's arguable that posting people's pics on the sidebar is harassment, given it's singling out people to shame them and arguably to get more people to harass them elsewhere. And since those people you mention were put up as a result of them knowing about the sub. So you'd wager they'd see it and know about it.

However, talking in your own corner of the internet about random people is not harassment of them. It maybe "distasteful" or "rude", in the "don't talk behind people's back" type of way. But the vast majority of these people wouldn't know.

If you don't know someone is calling you fat online, is it harassment? Really? No, it's not.

Granted I know nothing of that sub, so don't know how it was run. But simply taking people's pictures they put online, which is then public, and making fun of them in their own corner of the internet is not harassment at all.

If I called random celebrity an idiot right here, it's not harassment. They'll never see it. If I tweet them the same thing, it's at least closer to harassment. [though I'd say one mean tweet wouldn't constitute harassment]

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Dude... I didn't know what FPH was, but if all people are doing is doxxing and shaming fat people there, do you seriously think that's going to fly? Honestly, I am the furthest thing in the world from an SJW, but who the fuck in their right mind wants to post pictures of fat people just to make fun of them? It sounds creepy and a little despicable to me. I don't see anything approaching that kind of behaviour happening here.

[+]Il128 11 years ago* [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

You're missing the point. There was no doxxing. None. Ever. It was just a bunch of people posting publically available pictures of obese people and making fun of those pictures. There literally was no harassment of anyone ever. It was just people having ugly ideas.

You need to understand that Men's Rights is a very ugly idea to SJWs.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well if they have any sense and do not want to ruin their business, they will know the difference between a political sub that has nothing to do with harassment, and one that is committed to something that just seems ridiculous and pretty cruel, and in my mind does constitute a kind of harassment (posting pictures of fat people against their knowledge to make fun of them). If somebody was posting pictures of me "manspreading" or some shit, I would call that harassment.

There are many millions of reddit users who come here to express views that may not be mainstream, but that are not harassment or harming anyone. I will be very surprised if they're willing to lose that user-base. We'll have to see I guess.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Haha, grow up? I'm not the one who thinks it's a good idea to ridicule fat people on the internet. I might have entertained such things when I was 8.

In public, people cannot gather round me and comment about me, harass me, and abuse me, because I will call the police and charge them.

Okay, now I can safely conclude that you're trolling. Nobody is going to get arrested for calling you insulting names and laughing at you in public. Physically harassing you? Absolutely. Being mean? No, because that isn't bloody illegal.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Are you stupid or something? If a gang of people decide to gather around me and layer abuse at me without provocation, you think I can't call the police and have them arrested?

I understand all you pre-teen fucknuts are upset about your fatzone sub, but not everyone on r/MensRights is under 16.

[–]gprime 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

On what level was your post meant to be effective? A group of people insulting you is not illegal. Though I happen to be an attorney, I could've correctly told you as much at the age of four. And, for what it's worth, I am considerably overweight. I've been steadily losing weight, but I'd still very much qualify as the type that sub loves to insult. But you know what? As an adult, I accept that people are entitled to dislike me for whatever petty reason, and to express that dislike. I'd rather champion their rights to be assholes than silence them for the sake of my own ego, which isn't so shallow that I need to be shielded from the insults of people I don't respect in the first place.

[–][deleted]0 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Haha, of course you're an attorney, of course. Save it for later mate.

[–]appledcider 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yeah honestly fph sounds messed up. I don't understand if you're disliking fatness/fat people so much why you would want to repeatedly look at pictures of them then. you'd think it'd be more like something someone with a overweight fetish would do. Seems counterproductive and obsessive in addition to disrespectful.

I have no reason to think so.

Then you've failed to understand the situation.

[–]Tedesche 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No, and here's why: because as little overall clout as the MRM has, we are actually starting to make headlines. If they banned this sub, we'd all go apeshit, and the media would hear about it. Reddit doesn't need that kind of shitstorm, and I think it's pretty clear that these bans aren't about protecting victims of harassment so much as it is improving Reddit's image and retaining advertisers. This is about money and reputation, and even if most people wouldn't really care if this sub was banned, enough people would make enough noise that it would grab the public's attention for a brief enough time that it would put the idea in enough people's minds that Reddit was stifling political views. Advertisers do not want to be associated with that kind of rep, and so Reddit doesn't want to be within 100 yards of it. We'd have to seriously cross the line, many times, enough so that the media started talking about it before Reddit would take action against us, because again—they're only interested in cutting down on bad press. No bad press, no action on their part.

That being said, keep it civil, folks.

[–]alarumba 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All that is why I would like to see this sub banned. I want to watch the shitstorm.

[–]Tedesche 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

While it would undoubtedly be good publicity for the MRM, I have no desire for this sub to be banned. I know many won't agree, but I actually see men's rights getting some positive attention from the media, which IMO signals some societal acceptance. I'd like to see that trend continue, not reverse. Conflict can be good for social movements, but I'd much rather Reddit simply act sane and not do this.

[–]alarumba 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True. Ultimately that will be the best way forward. But some people just want to watch the world burn. I'm one of them.

[–]GarneyBumble -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If they banned this sub, we'd all go apeshit, and the media would hear about it. Reddit doesn't need that kind of shitstorm,

You dont have a clue in your head about how the world functions. What is your agenda here? Shit things up with childlike comprehension of business in the media? Cow people into inaction?

I've never read such an uninsightful comment as yours anywhere on reddit.

The one thing I'm glad about is no one mentioned anything about men's rights. Actually /r/againstmensrights was mentioned by some user (not sure if they're a member here). But overall, if you look at the subs mentioned, it's the ACTUAL awful subs. I found out there some subs that... I... I literally can't even believe that someone CREATED THEM, let alone the fact that people JOINED them. I have a feeling we have little chance to get banned. Granted, there's a chance, but I am not worried.

(knocks on wood feverishly)

[–]baserace 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

/r/AMR is asking why the OP is a mod of /r/WomenHate.

I also see you're a mod of various other subs, including /r/MenHate and /r/WomenDislike.

It's a fair question - OP?

[–]dungone 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

AMR is doing what they excel at - poisoning the well. Discredit the person who put forth the idea so that others don't even look at the idea.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh no I can't believe how evil people are for not liking proud women haters! Their hatred of women DEFINITELY doesn't come into play at ALL on a gendered rights sub! No siree! :( you're right, you guys are the REAL victims for us questioning your beliefs

[–]dungone 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh, hey. So I was watching Mad Max the other day and someone in the back kept going, "ooooh they hate it they hate it, oooh my precious yes yes we'll watch it again!" Wasn't you, right? Or was it?

[–]Il128 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Every movement has their extremists. I was made to be who I am, it's not a path I've chosen.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

so basically you have no answer and don't need to justify your hate of women because you know you can't? thanks for solidifying my beliefs that this movement is populated by people like you who are almost never actually called out for their beliefs :)

Remember men's rights, this is you! You are the company you keep and you obviously don't give too much of a shit if this dude hates women and is loud and proud about it

[–]baserace 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm the one who called him/her out and I've no idea if he/she hates women or his/her motivations for modding that sub. I'd have to hear what he/she has to say before judging properly... evidence, right to a fair hearing and all that.

Otherwise I agree, but woman-hate is largely downvoted and called out here, so I think we're keeping good company overall. If you're going to solidify your belief of a movement based on one person while ignoring the beliefs and actions of the overwhelming majority then you yourself should look in the mirror and check your biases.

[–]thehumungus 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

probably not. r/coontown is still up. They're letting subreddits offensive to liberal ideas stay up, so long as they play nice with other subreddits.

racism, especially of the subtle type, plays pretty well with large swathes of the US conservative population.

Anyway, the big argument is that "the sjws have taken over reddit with their radical liberal agenda and will be banning everything they don't like." Which I won't believe until that subreddit is gone.

[–]Erociter 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

racism, especially of the subtle type, plays pretty well with large swathes of the conservative population.

Well, yeah, it does.

But subtle racism also unfortunately goes over well with large swathes of the liberal population.

Look at Tumblr for some fascinating examples of this at work.

I don't think you can confine large scale racism to one group or another, as it were.

[–]thehumungus -5 points-4 points-3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

meh

[–]azazelcrowley 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I need to chime in here and point out this is an american perspective. For instance, in the united kingdom, it's typically working classes (And thus, the labor movement) which have views that tend toward racism.

Racism is neither an inherently right or left wing thing, and the political loyalties of the racist bloc of a nation depend on historical factors.

The metropolitan, middle to upper class, financial and trade focused conservatives of the united kingdom usually advance a race blind platform these days. (Especially considering the rise of UKIP and the BNP.)

The labour party also does pretty well on this issue, but crucially, this pisses off a large part of their core demographic, who are concerned about immigrants tekkin thar jurbs (Which may or may not have merits as an issue, i'm not getting into it here.), and this leads to racial tensions.

Meanwhile, in the USA, the reason for racists gravitation toward the republican party are more historical still even than the UK's recent shakeup, and can be arguably traced back to this issue: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/11/democrats_can_t_win_white_working_class_voters_the_party_is_too_closely.html (Really worth a read, by the way, to anyone interested in politics in the US.)

https://np.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/39bpam/removing_harassing_subreddits/cs25u4n

I don't think harassing people is a regular occurrence. I think we can play by the rules.

The only time I could see it being an issue is if someone posts a video of an anonymous "Big Red" type. Then people en masse decide to doxx her and send her verbal abuse that can be construed as threats. We should just criticize her ideas rather than harass anyways.

[–]Crazyhyperway 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mensrights won't get banned. If they are going to ban this sub there will be massive hate because this sub isn't focused around making fun of a group of people like coontown or fph. You are over-exaggerating, they aren't planning to ban this sub (Pao said she doesn't even plan on banning coontown)

[–]ejh3k 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know what I think is sad about the loss of FPH? The motivation it has provided many people to lose weight, including me. I have never been anywhere near as large as anyone on that sub, but I could stand to lose 50 pounds and they have motivated me to do just that. So for that loss, I am saddened. There have been bystanders who have been besmirched, but for the most part that sub just wanted people to look in the mirror and take personal responsibility and stop lying to themselves and the people that cared for them. Goodnight and goodbye sweet shitlords. I will remember you fondly. To my fellow MRAs: keep doing what you feel is best in your hearts. So many of you prop up and support each other and it makes me feel warm inside to see so many men drop their shields and care. Some of you are dicks though too, just as there were assholes in FPH.

[–]The_Directors_Cut 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even if I didn't always approve of things said on FPH, banning it was too far. And now the backlash will be people angered and paranoid, which is never a good mixture. I'd buckle your seatbelts everyone, shit's about to get crazy.

I've just been looking into this somewhat and I will point out that they have not banned the following hate subs, SRS and againstmensrights and probably any other subs that target males.

They have even said they don't qualify. I'm actually thinking that half the admins may actually be subscribed now.

I am suddenly very interested in the whole thing.

[–]ownage99988 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

No. We don't doxx people, we don't vote brigade. There's no logical reason to ban this sub. That's just paranoia bud.

[–]Hamakua 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Fat People hate didn't doxx people or vote brigade either.

[–]ownage99988 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Uh. Yeah they did. They posted pictures and contact information of the imgur employees who took down their pictures. That's the easiest most blatant form of doxxing there is.

[–]Hamakua 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

they did not, the only posting of Imgur employees staff portraits that were hosted publicly by Imgur themselves. No contact information was ever posted nor were there any calls to brigade, as a matter of fact an Imgur representative was in active contact with one of the moderators over at Fat People Hate up until the subreddit got banned.

I witnessed all of this myself first hand. The harassment claims were baseless.

[–]ownage99988 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Even if that is true, which I don't believe it is, I'm personally glad they are gone. They have been the biggest cancer on the entire site for a while now.

[–]Hamakua 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You shouldn't be glad because their behavior and views would be considered "more tame" by the perspective of those who had the power to ban them, than the behaviors of /r/MR are seen ass.

Posting about an organized convention? -Conspiracy to brigade (In real life no less!) A call to protest or contact a PUBLIC representative? "DOXX".

I don't know how long you have been around but /r/mensrights has long been considered a "thorn in reddits side" from the "SJW/Feminist" perspective. You need only look up the history of the SPLC and what they were told to write about the subreddit.

It's not as cut and dry as you think it is.

[–]ownage99988 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but FPH wasn't banned because of SJW's and feminists. Nobody liked them being around, except for them. I really have no idea why you're defending what they were doing.

But... reddit isn't the state. it's a privately owned company with stockholders and employees. They can't let it be a free for all, otherwise advertisers will steer clear and then the money is cut off and my favorite website will close up shop.

[–]Hamakua 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That is a fare argument and I've seen it elsewhere - except reddit's creation was based on freedom of speech, further, not defending FPH, for example, pretty much condemns any subreddit that has a "non mainstream" set of ideas to being banned.

This sub generates a lot of outside references in the press, in that way we are pretty influential. Even if that influences is just to try to undermine it's still suggests that the sentiments expressed are part of a growing trend. Trying to censure discussion on a topic that's catching on simply makes the topic of discourse accelerate faster. You cant delete the discussion the interest the discussion will simply spread to other forums and in attempting to quash the topic you just makes those that hold opposing ideologies look weak.

[–]Snowfox2ne1 -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

FPH and various other subs were taking people doing everyday things, and posting them online to make fun of them. It is fine to have a counter sub for something they disagree with; if FPH only picked on those who publicly advocated the 'healthy at every size', or other fat positive movements, there wouldn't be an issue. FPH went out of their way to make fun of anyone and everyone. People were linking people from their facebook, taking pictures in public with fat people, and doing all of this while harassing people for simply existing and being over-weight.

To think that MR is next, is insanity. Unless we start posting pictures of anyone and everyone who attends feminist rallies, and ridiculing individuals for simply being women/feminists, we have nothing to worry about. Also, our mods keep us in check, and this has never been a hate sub, while the FPH mods went out of their way to ban any voice that didn't point at laugh in blind hatred of all things fat.

[–]shinarit 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You have to realize that you cannot harass someone by speaking about them. To harass someone you have to be in contact with them. No doxxx means no harassment.

[–]Snowfox2ne1 -4 points-3 points-2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Face to face interactions you are right. On the internet, where you post their picture in front of 150k subscribers, it is harassment.

[–]shinarit 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

150k in a couple hundred million, basically unsearchable because no other data associated with it. Yeah, I don't think that's harassment.

[–]BearWithHat -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see by the down votes this subreddit is another lost cause. People now down vote because they disagree. No room for discussion. This is just what happens on the internet. You have a halfway decent place and then a bunch of assholes come and shit everywhere.

Alright, before everyone starts panicking, take a look at this thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/39bzdf/why_was_rfatpeoplehate_along_with_several_other/

Now, it's entirely possible that /r/MensRights is in trouble, but I think/hope that we can all agree that /r/fatpeoplehate was not a good subreddit and that we do not want to be affiliated or aligned with it. Whether or not they deserved to be banned is another story, one which we do not fully know. But, there could very well be good reason for their banning. Vagueness on the part of the admins is hardly ideal and doesn't paint a good picture, but it's not necessarily a sign of our impending demise. It's not a lie. Go read the comments. I read them despite how much I dislike it so I can have a fair veiw. The people in fatpeoplehatetwo are just people who have nothing better to do than harass people. Think about it, they are not standing up for anyone or any cause. They are attacking what they see to be an easy target. I promise most of those redditers are not in very good shape themselves. Instead of bettering themselves, they can only lash out. This says to me "I hate myself and will project it on any target I can"

Tl;Dr reddit bans a bunch of bullies and assholes who can't stick to their space and everyone acts like they are suprised. Sure there are worse subreddits, but they stay in their corners.

They went above and beyond the rules of reddit. Just because an individual doesn't like fat people, it doesn't mean they're from FPH.

Just because a person is not fat does not mean they agree with FPH. Some of us have a heart. Some of us realize this world exists not because of our individual selves but from the collective efforts of our ancestors to make progress and peace. FPH are hate mongers out to inject more negativity into the world. They don't want to help anything, and they would hurt people if they could. They are like nazi. so stop defending them. Unless you are one of them, in which case, please go see a mental health expert.

What motivation would I have to lie? What, if You don't see it, it never happens? You need to take a step back and learn to actually read instead of basing it of how you feel. Facts are facts. FPH openly brigades and attacks and no matter how much you deny it or call it a lie it is the truth. You are supporting a hate group. You are on par with KKK apologists. Clearly, you are not a good person so why should I care if you think I'm lying? Don't you have a neo nazi meeting tot attend?

Realistically, Reddit is a tool for making money for the people who own it. That's what it is meant to be. It is completely within their power to permanently ban who or what ever they want with no reason whatsoever or to lie about the reasoning. They owe us nothing.

Next or not, it doesn't matter. Men's Rights has other places it can go, as does FPH. Reddit is just a convenience. If we wanted a site where we didn't have to worry, we'd build a private community where people have to be invited to join and are carefully vetted to ensure they will fit in BEFORE they are given that privilege.

I dont think so, /r/fatpeoplehate[1] took things too far, they were actively harassing imgur mods and that got them banned.
