My SO and I aren't polygamous, it's too much effort and star alignment for that to work, but we've had an open relationship for years now. It works for us in the sense we don't have to deny the physical attraction our bodies naturally feels for others. We keep a crystal communication about it, otherwise it wouldnt work. Also her hookup tales make me hard af for some reason

I'm not a fan of them. I suppose I can't judge people of other faiths in other countries who practice it, but it's contrary to my beliefs & I think it should remain banned in Western countries. Swinging & open marriages are just variants of polygamy, no? Monogamy is great; the decline of Western civilization goes hand in hand with the decline in monogamy.

why shouldnt polygamy be acceptable for the most attractive men? we kinda already have it now. the older chad at this club i go to swings but him and his wife only talk to girls. thats one step away from polygamy. the most attractive guys are more attractive than the most attractive women. men get points for height, income, confidence, and intelligence that s women just don't get in the same way. not to mention the richest people and the smartest people in the world by and large are men. this means attractive men with those traits especially in the extreme cant find a partner of equal value to marry so what should they do? this is why u have the chad harem phenomenon today already

Relationships arent polygamous, the person is polygamous.

A person who sleeps around when single can later be in a relationship later, but they are still a polygamous person. It's not a monogamous relationship anymore than a cheater is in a monogamous relationship.

I don't really think that polygamy is a solution for any dating problems that men are having. In fact, polygamy will make things worse off for men. I don't see why many people seem to be promoting this. Polygamy is the worst dating strategy for men since it requires there to be way less men per women. Otherwise, the vast majority of men end up completely alone. Only the extremely attractive and/or wealthy get the majority of fertile women. This will lead to mass depression and desperation among the men who aren't millionaires or attractive. Not to mention that it hurts the women as well because it promotes favoritism and jealousy which is not a good idea to have. It also treats women as though they are a commodity/ worker rather than someone who you're building up a family with. A boss has multiple workers while a husband has one wife that he's dedicated to.

Almost all societies relied on monogamy to keep marriage and birth rates stable and society functioning. Monogamy keeps things equal for both men and women. It's also the most stable environment to raise children.

Guys who can't get relationships want to talk about polygamy, swinging or an open marriage?

Swinging is sport fucking and emotional monogamy. Its the gateway to poly and open for some which leads to divorce, or used as a last ditch effort to save a marriage where there is no sexual spark between the couple anymore. Its the most stable of the lot but not for weak marriages.

Open marriage is how you get divorced eventually when you find someone you connect with better. You then say things like "We were in an open marriage for 3 years and divorced but it had nothing to do with the open marriage"

Polyamory is how you get lots and lots of drama before a divorce.

Polygamy is what you do when men are scarce in a society but not if women are as it is a evolutionary shit show if its multiple men.

This is called a one penis policy in polyamory circles and it’s frowned upon because its seen as controlling, but isn’t it inherently less controlling than monogamy?

I think one point that needs to be cleared up is that even in a polygamous society (of which an overwhelming majority of pre-modern civilizations were), MOST COUPLES were nevertheless monogamous. Some of them might simply prefer monogamy, but most of them simply couldn’t afford it.

Most wealthy high status men are already capable of maintaining informal harems, having multiple babymamas, or divorcing and remarrying over and over. Personally I doubt formalizing it would skew the numbers much.

Most (95+% IIRC) pre-modern civilizations were selectively polygynous, where the socio-economically elite men had multiple wives. And I know enough rich guys with sidepieces and see enough male celebrities and athletes with baby mamas to think that it really hasn’t changed, it’s just pushed under the table. In the end, legally-enforced monogamy is mostly about getting the middle class and lower class men (and nowadays women too) to keep working and line the pockets of the upper class.

My personal thoughts is that people should be able to fuck and be with whomever they want so long as it is voluntary and consensual. I don’t think the government as an entity should have any control over the institution of marriage.

My experience with ploy people are that:

The relationships they have a pretty unstable and it comes as no surprise. A relationship is a lot of work and sometimes difficult to handle. Several relationships can be absolutely exhausting especially if there a problems in several of them at the same time.
They often disguise their fear of commitment by saying they are poly, meaning they can have the benefits of a relationship yet still have the options to act like they are single.

My general thoughts are that polygamy is a terrible idea, there's multiple reasons why most economically developed countries have it banned. The relationships people have today affect the next generation - monogamous relationships are advantageous for child rearing and any sort of polygamous system is unlikely to do even a halfway decent job of replacing it, this will have downstream social effects.

The second argument is an economic one. It's pretty transparent that polygamy results in smaller portions of men dating larger portions of women. However, relationships and parenthood provide important motivators for spending, and when you take away a big motivator to spend you take away a big motivator to earn. The women here might not give a shit if beta billy spends his days becoming miserable and unmotivated but the economy cares a lot if these guys become low spenders and minimalist earners.

The good news is that polygamists are still a fringe group and most people who are interested in them long term seem to be dysfunctional or otherwise unusual - monogamy provides benefits to both men and women.

I think it's a cope for insecure people that can't commit but are profoundly scared of being lonely. Also, some of the dudes or girls that lead those houses aren't right. Seriously though, I don't think it's going to cause any sort of downfall of society. Many people prefer monogamy for various reasons (less concern about stds, more obvious ways to pool resources, less people's emotions to consider, raising children, etc.)

I've known a handful of poly couples and they are often a mess. Granted the parties are usually not on the most stable ground to begin with, for some reason.

I don't think poly is for me but if my partner and I are together for a very long time, and we mutually agreed to it, I'd be okay with him having a bf and me a gf, especially if it was another hot couple we got along with really well. I doubt we'd live with them, though.

My grandfather was a polygamist, had 2 wives at the same time. Each wife bore 6 kids. Then each of those kids each had several kids(us). Crazy stuff. My mum’s side of the family is absolutely ginormous as a result

Both wives (my maternal grandmothers) still have a really good relationship, but he is dead now so I don’t know what it was like when they were younger

Personally I don’t like poly relationships but to each their own as long as it’s consensual and no one gets hurt

It’s fairly popular among my friends. Lots of open relationships. Quite a bit of FMF, but it’s more a man and a woman sharing another woman than two women sharing a man. I’ve had a a few 3somes but I don’t really want to be part of “the lifestyle” and my husband and I are monogamous. And no, it’s not a matter of me being wild in my younger years with Chad and settling with a beta husband. We did a 3some and a near but not quite 3some when we first started dating and then settled into a normal boring relationship. Theoretically we’ve agreed it could be fun but we haven’t pursued it or gone out of our way to make it happen.

Most were never poly, they were just looking for open relationships. Now that the term "ethically non monogamous" has taken off I almost never see people say they're poly anymore.

I do think monogamy is outdated and mostly limiting. I probably just have shitty people in my life but I can't think of one married couple that is happy. They might act nice around their kids but deep down you can see they're just sick of each other. :/ I never want someone to feel like even though they hate me now they have to stay with me. I'd rather be dead.

When they don't exist due to a religious mandate and when all involved are consenting adults, I am all for it. It is different from swinging because usually in swinging at the end of a night or a couple nights the one couple made of two people still goes back to their home together. With polygamy you might be going to the homes of your various husbands, wives, or anyone else.

Swingers tend to go to parties where the ultimate theme of the night is swinging. Open marriages often have partners meeting people any old place not specifically other couples and not specifically parties.

I think these relationships and polyamorous ones are perfect for a (albeit growing), minority of people but are not suited to many.

Polygamy is unsustainable at a population level unless perhaps we start killing male babies to decrease the gender ratio to like 3 men for every 4 women or something.

However I think I could handle a full on relationship with two women (probably not more than two). I like being around romantic partners and I actually think I’m too much for one person sometimes because I like talking to them. So polygamy would actually work for me on an individual level I just understand it works very very badly if more than a tiny fraction of 1% of men do it.

While not for me, I do understand why polygamy might be the right path for some people. I believe you can be in love with more than one person and commit to them (which makes it different from swinging/open marriages). I do think only very few people will be capable of having successful polygamous relationship as they need a ton of communication, confidence and trust.
