Fat people need to wear clothes too, so it makes sense that there would be plus size models so that plus size customers know what the clothes would look like on a body like their own.

Hi I'm a fat woman. I used to look like your example 1 but I've lost weight and now look closer to your example 2.

I've still got a ways to go! But do I not deserve to have cute clothes and the opportunity to enjoy my life while I'm losing the weight? Do you believe I should live in complete misery until I'm thin? Most stores don't even carry plus sizes in the store itself, so should I just order clothing online and take the financial risk it'll fit at all, if there's no photos to show me otherwise?

Fat people exist. Regardless of their choices before or after being fat, they exist and deserve to have the opportunity to wear clothing like anyone else.

Capitalism benefits primarily from people who over-consume products. In the US, medically obese is called “chubby” and chubby is called “skinny.” We think it’s normal for a 5’ 4” sedentary woman to consume 2,400 calories a day. Corporations profit immensely from this mentality.

Obese people are the ideal consumers in a corrupt capitalist society. Your average obese American: eats a lot, doesn’t care about the ingredients in their food (meaning companies can get away with using cheap low-quality ingredients), and will end up with poor health that greatly benefits Big Pharma.

Eat your Big Macs and your giant sodas to support McDs, develop Type 2 diabetes, and now Big Pharma gets to cash in on your daily dose of metformin. Insurance companies will love it when they get to overcharge you for your eventual foot amputation.

Right now we have a bunch of obese 20-30 year olds ranting about body positivity. They won’t begin to experience significant health effects until their 40s-50s.

If you look at these magazines, you’ll realize a lot of them have ties to the food industry. Dove (the company that sells soap) is huge on ~body positivity~ and they also sell chocolate.

What happens when you convince women they’re beautiful and healthy just the way they are? Zero desire to lose weight. Once they hit 40-50 and start experiencing health problems, it’s usually too late. Their metabolism and their psyche have already been irreparably hijacked by processed sugar, seed oils, and other refined carbs.

Beauty standards will adjust as humans become more complacent. Depression rates are rising, more and more women are experiencing autoimmune symptoms (thank the soybean oil that’s in 90% of the food you eat), and people are giving up.

“Fat is beautiful” might as well translate to “bow down to your corporate overlords as you drive up their profits eating their garbage food and taking their expensive medications.”

Every single company and magazine promoting body positivity is tied to some sort of corporation that sells garbage unhealthy food. It’s capitalism. Simple as.

The biggest irony here is that a lot of the “anti-capitalists” are often obese.

There are tons of obese people nowadays. Fashion brands are trying to make money of those people obviously, that's why they do it. Does it affect standards of attractiveness? Lmao, no. Does it inflate attractiveness for women? Also, no. Men have eyes. Unless we go blind, it won't change a thing.

The majority of people in the US have bodies that are overweight or obese. You know, the bodies they put clothes on.

I think it’s just that it’s a market being utilized where it wasn’t before due entirely to stigma. It’s not really promoting being unhealthy, it’s promoting clothing lines for people who are, and I’m honestly surprised it’s taken this long for people to monetize it in America.

The cosmopolitan pic is promoting delusion. It's easier to be in denial about your issues, rather than acknowledge them and treat them. That's what cosmopolitan is promoting.

The second pic, though, is just selling big size clothing for fat people. It makes sense the model is fat too. She's there to show how the clothes look on a real person.

I don't think it will change standards for attractiveness. A fit body is a healthy body, it's in our instinct to be attracted to healthy people.

What I'm going to say next may upset a lot of people, feel free to disagree but this whole "body positivity" with fat models is dangerously stupid. Obesity is a disease, one that kills a lot of people and makes life miserable. This whole body positively is forcing people to understand that it's okay to be fat, but it's not. Only a very small percentage of people have a medical problem that they can't lose weight, and using this justification is stupid. I've been obese and I worked my way to a healthy and fit body. If I can do it, anyone can. My whole family is fat, it's in my genetics, I see how Obesity affects lives, not only the life of the obese but the others around as well.

I’ve never been overweight or obese but I’m glad that people with those body types have more representation now. It doesn’t affect me at all, but I can imagine that bigger women benefit by having more options and styles to choose from. It kinda makes sense from a marketing standpoint to increase your sizes since most of the population, at least in the US, is overweight or obese, and people wanna know how those clothes will look on them. I don’t think this has had much of an affect on preferences though. Fat shaming is still a major problem and I’m lucky enough not to deal with that, my overweight friends not so much..

People are becoming more obese due to franken food. Corporations and the media are trying to normalize obesity because obesity is becoming the standard. Instead of making changes to what they do to our food, they're normalizing what the franken food does.

Our future is going to be like Wall-E. Most people will be obese, being fit and thin will be a subculture/counter culture.

I don't think so. While there are more "body positive" images there are also lots more images of conventionally extremely attractive women out there than ever before.

Fat people get a lot of contempt and shaming, women and men. They go out in the world and it's very noticeable that they have fewer romantic options. I don't think this will change anytime soon and these trends in advertising will do little to affect behavior in the real world.

These advertisements are to signal to heavier people that the brand gets them and wants to cater to them (and wants their money). Yes, there is also some "virtue signaling" as well. Companies want to seem hip to the times and demonstrate values that are in line with their customers. I'm sure they've done studies and workshops to make an educated guess that this is a net positive.

I'm not sure what it means, but I've never once seen an advertisement featuring a truly fat man. The biggest I've seen has been in the dad bod range. My guess is that companies have determined that it would be a net negative to show these images. That guys would worry they would look fat more in the clothes more than they worry about whether the brand understands them, wants to cater to them, or has progressive values.

Obese women need clothes too. They also need models to display the clothes. Naturally some of those models will become famous and be featured on magazines and other media. Many skinny models are not healthy either… optimal health is not a prerequisite to being seen in the media.

Now, I do take some issue with calling it “healthy.” While it’s true that you can’t determine someone’s health by looking at them, and there’s a lot more to it than weight, after a certain point, obesity will negatively affect your health. Some people are very healthy and overweight, or technically “obese” because of their body type. But morbid obesity is called “morbid” for a reason.

So basically, just because a woman is fatter than you consider attractive, doesn’t mean she is unhealthy or shouldn’t be featured on a magazine. Women do not exist to be attractive to you. But we shouldn’t be promoting obesity as healthy because it’s not. We also don’t need to be commenting on strangers’ “health”… it’s between them and their doctor. There’s a lot of unnecessary concern trolling that goes on in these discussions of weight.

Fashion modelling has never been about beauty. At least not the type of beauty most women want to manifest and men find appealing. High fashion models are still primarily extremely tall pubescent girls that are selected because they look like a portfolio sketch or because the gay men that dominate the industry like how they look. Magazine ads will feature women that are photoshopped in a way that defies normal human proportions, like with legs making up 70% of their height, or a head that is 25% too big. This isn't really aspirational, it's made to grab the eye, it's the IDEA of a person, not an actual person.

I do think that the examples you've shown are more of a virtue signaling/attention grabbing thing though. It's basically designed to grab attention but in a different way. Plus size models that are selected to sell clothes are typically still gifted with good proportions and photoshopped like regularly models.

It means there are lots of fat people in America/the world and if you want to sell clothes to them you need to offer them what they want. Specifically, representation and acknowledgement that they aren’t invisible, clothing designed for a variety of body shapes and sizes, and a decent idea of what that clothing looks like on an appropriately-sized body.

Well clothes are for people to wear, a good portion of people are fat and they need clothes too, i think the brands are just trying to sell the most clothes. As for the dating standard its more likely to be the fact that most people are overweight and some obese so there aren’t a loot to go around if everyone liked only thin people.

Ok after reading through the comments I'll offer my two cents.

I dislike seeing morbidly obese people because I know that many of them are greatly unhappy in their bodies. And no, it's not because society tells them to be. It's because being morbidly obese is genuinely hard on their bodies. Some of my obese friends even start feeling out of breath from simple tasks like having an intense conversation while standing or even sitting. They experience a lot of health problems, things that I can't even come close to understanding because I am considered ever so slightly underweight for my height and age. My BMI is on the lower end of healthy (18.4). One of my mother's friends isn't even 50 yet and she has to have a knee surgery due to the pressure put on her knees by her weight (as suggested by her dr). She's been open with us about her regrets with her health. Many of my obese friends are finding now that having children of their own is becoming a pipe dream. Unless they lose weight, and RAPIDLY, their child-bearing doors will shut for good. And it's very disappointing to them. They don't even know where to start because their eating habits have crept up so hard and so fast.

Another reason why I dislike seeing this is purely selfish. I don't see my body type represented anymore. I am med height, relatively chesty, and thin. When abercrombie and hollister and victoria secret used their regular models, I saw more of my own body type (obviously the models' bodies are SIGNIFICANTLY better) but I wasn't too far off. I could see how the clothing advertised would fit me. Now, I cannot. When clothing is worm by someone plus sized, I just get confused. Will this fit tight? Will this fit loose? It also doesn't help that I'm finding a size Small today is fitting me more like a Medium, and I'm forced to buy XS or even XXS when offered. I think the best solution is to have models of a variety of sizes to model clothing, and we can choose which models would fit us best. It would give models more jobs, and us as consumers more options to play with. But that's just my two cents that noone asked for.

I think the inclusivity is good, as long as they do not replace the models of other sizes and thin models completely. That way everyone can see how the product would look on them. However, it is sad that brands only do this exclusively thing in skin color and size and not also in height and age.

Most women aren’t 175+cm and the number of times a dress or trousers have looked too long on me or I cannot estimate how it would look on me is crazy. And I’m 165cm, imagine being 150cm and only seeing these super tall models. Because I live in Japan, luckily I never have this problem with local brands and also the models here are around my height (I also do commercial modeling and model for clothes), but when I go to foreign brand websites, it’s always like these super tall women and even in Europe/the US the average height isn’t 175+cm. I’m from NL but even there the average is 173cm. And not everyone is young anymore and it’s weird how most brands still use young models even for sophisticated brands while older women are the target market. And then I haven’t even started about the market for men because you don’t see much of any representation for men in size/height, maybe more in age for men than women because they use older male models for male suits sometimes but don’t use older female models for the same female suits.

I also think that the problem is that we cater to the loudest and people never actively and collectively have complained about the height or age of models that the representation is lacking. Nor have obese men really complained about six-pack model men to be a misrepresentation of the regular guy.

Someone is buying the magazines and paying these ladies, so I am not sure why the industry would stop using them because some dudes don't like it? What does it mean for society? More women making more money, that's a good thing.
