only a dumb woman would give stuff up for you, including having kids with you and taking some time off from work, without marriage. The upside is basically encouraging the woman to make financial sacrifices for the life that you want; for the benefit of the family.

This applies to me personally, since I’m not like the best home maker. I have male friends who cut down on their hours and their wives are the primary bread winners, so this benefit isn’t exclusive to men; women who are primary breadwinners get this too.

There’s a meme from the lord of the rings, “I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you.” Your wife, at least theoretically cannot carry your burdens, but from time to time, can carry you. Your wife can help hold you accountable, which makes you better person all around. Wives can bring you mental and emotional stability. It’s harder to get distracted by irrelevant stuff if you can narrow your focus to your wife and family, and institutions that support them. If you believe in such a thing there is a freedom of focus, as opposed to a freedom of choice that a wife can, possibly bring.

Whether she wants to be this for you however, is a different matter.

First and foremost, there are lots of women who will not stay in a long term relationship without marriage, so refusing to get married limits your choice of partners. One you are married, you gain respect, especially from your in-laws, which makes your chances of staying together greater. If there will be a time where one of you will not be working, it's advantageous to file your taxes jointly.

The thing is marriage is still the best way for steady sex and companionship for a man. It's not that men absolutely want to get married it's that most women will often NOT stay in a long term relationship without the prospect of marriage. Especially if she's being hounded by her girlfriends about her man "not putting a ring on it." Remember women mostly get with men long term and marriage for security especially financial security. Marriage is the ultimate form of security.

A stable environment in which to raise children, assuming the marriage isn't dysfunctional and actually lasts "til death do us part". I know, I know...a non married co-habitating couple can also do this in theory but as much as I'm against marriage for myself personally I can't deny that there's something about the biological or adoptive parents of a child being lawfully wedded husband and wife living in the same home as their child that trumps simply "shacking up" and "playing house".

There are no benefits. The general man need not get married in this culture and if he does make her sign a prenup and require her to work and give you her money. 34 years old man here. Just out of a LTR of almost a decade with a woman I was actually commited to. I broke up the engagement.

I was about to get married for social conventions and peer pressure. Because that's what my grandma would have liked me to do, because my mom was constantly asking me about it, because my ex-fiancee wanted, because her mom thought it was the thing to do, because her sister and lots of her friends were already married and she didn't want to look bad...

And I was about to do it to make grandma proud, to make my mother in law happy (because I love that woman mid you not) and because I loved my ex-fiancee.

I was going to get married because that's what a man is supposed to do right?

Then I asked myself...

What's the problem marriage is going to resolve?

And I realized marriage doesn't have anything to offer me as a man, since everything I can do in the context of a marriage, I can do it without it.

I realized it was women the ones pushing for it (no idea why, it must be something about the social proof and status, you know, women's shit) and started asking what was in it for me.

There is nothing in marriage for me.

I know in some countries you have some tax reduction (not here) and then loans and hospital whatever?

99% of the benefits people list are the benefits of having a good life partner. When that life partner threatens to leave you if you don't sign a lopsided contract, that doesn't mean the benefits of a good partner are coming from that contract

I do think the biggest actual benefit is for kids, all three of you having the same last name makes so much governmental/legal stuff easier. And having two parents that stay together is best for them(although again you can stay together without a marriage certificate)

- You maximise the chance of the relationship working

- You provide your kids with the best start in life

- You gain social status and are seen as more trustworthy, which can do wonders for your career

- Other guys see you as less of a threat because they know you're hitched for good

- Tax benefits (although this isn't as important)

The trick is to find a quality woman who is well educated, has her own income and who has never married. Have a solid prenup in place.
