I see these phrases all over social media and dating apps "I'm not settling," "he needs to meet my standards," "I know my worth," and "treat me the way I deserve." On the surface, it sounds like standard self-respect. But if we drop the modern therapy-speak and actually look at the behavior behind these buzzwords, let's be honest with ourselves, it’s just hypergamy.

When a woman says a guy "doesn't meet her standards," what is she usually filtering for? Is she talking about his patience, his empathy, or his loyalty? Sometimes, sure. But overwhelmingly, "standards" is just a socially acceptable code word for his income, his height, his career, and his ability to provide a specific lifestyle. "Treating me the way I deserve" almost always translates to paying for the dates, planning the trips, and out-earning her.

There is nothing inherently unnatural about women wanting a successful, capable guy. Women have practiced hypergamy mating across and up the socioeconomic ladder for all of human history. It makes evolutionary sense. The issue in modern dating isn't the behavior itself, it's the gaslighting that surrounds it.

Instead of just owning it and saying, "I want a man who makes more money than me and has higher status, and taller" it gets wrapped up in this untouchable, moralistic language of "self-love." If you make $50k a year and refuse to date a guy making $45k because you "refuse to settle," that has nothing to do with personal boundaries or emotional health. You are literally just practicing hypergamy.

People get incredibly defensive when you use that word, treating it like some kind of insult. It's not. It's just basic human behavior. But it completely kills honest dialogue when we pretend these modern empowerment slogans are about deep emotional alignment. Strip away the viral catchphrases, and it’s the exact same vetting process that’s existed for thousands of years securing the highest-value partner available. Let's at least be honest about what we're actually talking about.
