It seems that there is a lot of confusion about what "hypergamy" means in terms of sexual selection. Too many people, and even red-pill guys tend to frame hypergamy in terms of money or social status, but it's really broader than that. Men are polygamous (meaning that our sexual desires function in a way to mate as broadly as possible) and women are hypergamous (meaning that their sexual desires function in a way to only mate with the "best" man possible - even if others are mating with him too).

You might ask "aren't men and women both trying to pick the 'best' of the opposite sex"? The answer is no. Men just want as many mating opportunities as possible (with facial beauty taking a priority). Low quality or high quality doesn't matter. A man is just as happy sleeping with a 4'11" young and pretty McDonald's worker as he is sleeping with a 5'9" facially attractive fortune 500 CEO. And...why not both (if he can).

First some facts:

Nearly half of men in the study indicated that their tallest acceptable date could be taller than them or their height (24 and 23 percent, respectively), while 53 percent required their date to be shorter than them. But a whopping 89 percent of women said the shortest person they would date would still have to be taller than them. Only seven percent would accept someone who was their height, and just four percent would allow for a shorter guy.

Height Preferences

  • the average mean height preference difference of all men was 1.64in shorter, the overall ideal range was 4.93in shorter to 1.65in taller

  • the average mean height preference difference of all women was 7.94in taller, the overall ideal range was 5.3in taller to 10.4in taller

That's right, folks. The average height gap preferred by women is about eight (8) inches in the man's favor. But the average height gap preferred by men is only about 1 1/2 inches in the man's favor. And that one inch can certainly be explained by mere cultural factors (i.e., most women are shorter anyway).

So, if human height is an evolutionary signal for fitness, the female desire for male height is an excellent example of hypergamy. Plus, it's an honest signal (unlike money) because it can be easily measured upon first meeting someone and there is no social stigma around being shallow about height. Women have been conditioned to lie about their hypergamous nature when it comes to money and some other things, but height hasn't become completely taboo yet and so it's the best way to see hypergamy at work in a clear and unbiased way.
