Do not get married until you're 35. Before that, work on yourself. If a chick wants to come alongside of you, make sure she is at your side and not on a pedestal.
If you marry a girl make sure she's 26 or older. Under 26 and she's too immature to get married. Human brains don't fully develop until age 25.
Get a prenuptial agreement. Do not get married without one. Make sure it has a draconian infidelity clause. If she doesn't sign it, she's a gold digging bitch and you shouldn't marry her. Don't be afraid to concede a little but not too much.
Do not be afraid to walk away. Do not chase after her if she walks away. This is a test to see how much disrespect she can get away with. Do not allow yourself to be disrespected. Memorize this phrase "Who the f@ck do you think you're talking to??". If you wouldn't accept that behavior from a stranger on the street you shouldn't accept it from her.
Know the laws in your state regarding cohabitation and common law marriage. Honestly it's best not to move in with a girl unless you're 99% sure you want to marry her.
Wrap your Jimmy. There are girls out there who are not above baby trapping a dude. Plus the way some unfortunate dudes figure out their girl is cheating is that they get chlamydia or HSV or some other incurable VD.

Was it all worth it?

Yes definitely.

My kids are amazing. Many of the experiences I had with my ex-wife were amazing.

I have no idea how my life would have turned out permanently single. I’d guess worse.

But the pain of marriage and divorce was worth it, on balance, for me.

You cannot be sure when marrying that your decision is 100% correct (mine was not).

But if you do the best job you can of mutually selecting each other (we did), the upside is pretty immense and worth it.

If you ARE correct (like my parents were) the rewards are incomparable.

So to me the challenge for you is:

How do you and your potential future spouse select each other eyes open with the best chance of success?

Don’t be cynical about the process, fine tune your picker.

Don't think about doing it before thirty-five. Hunker down on your career until then. Then, mitigate potential financial losses. Buy a home before you marry. Never put her name on it. Keep accounts separate. Learn to check women. For marriage to work, a man needs to lead.

I got married for probably the most common and also the dumbest reason - because I had been with the same woman for 7 years and thought it was just what you did and what was expected of me.

If the woman you want to marry is rich and the money to her is not the issue then I would probably say go for it. The reason for that is she is obviously not looking for a pay day.

I have a cynical point of view but my divorce was very straight forward which cost me about $600 in total however that as it turns out is the exception to the rule it seems.

There is nothing wrong with getting married but you have to be very careful about who you are marrying. Small red flags grow. The little crankyness and being unreasonable can turn to emotional abuse and gaslighting. A girlfriend that gets bored quick can turn into a cheating spouse down the line. Recognize those little red flags, and be very cautious on who you marry.

By all means have a loving, committed relationship with children, but there is no benefit to inviting the government into your relationship to fuck you over when she decides to leave. It takes multiple generations to "learn" about new social circumstances. A great example is urbanization. When a society first urbanizes, it usually takes 2-3 generations for members to realize they don't need 7 kids like they did when they were farmers, and in fact it makes it tougher to educate/prepare that many under the new situation.

Keep this in mind when people who got married in the 60s to their HS sweetheart, when the sex rev wasn't in full swing and/or wasn't around in many parts of the country, talk to you about their long standing year marriages. Other than maybe a prostitute at a Navy Base in Okinawa or Sicily, the man has pretty much only known his wife. And she's slept with nobody (or next to nobody, maybe a bumbling encounter on Blueberry Hill by dashboard light) except him their entire life. Not the case today! Not even with most 'religious' girls from small towns do they get to 20 without at least a few partners these days, and they are great at lying about it (I know this both my IRL experiences, talking to people IRL, and the Strong Successful Male guy on youtube have stories).

There are MANY fake good girls out there, both 'secular' and 'religious'. Many a man has discovered his wife did porn-star level stuff involving multiple people at the same time that he thought was a virgin or near-virgin at marriage 10 years ago. And he usually finds out from a friend or worse, an momento she kept that he finds - and realizes it's not dusty and has been reviewed recently, or on her computer, last modified a thursday ago.

Also, if you have a retirement development nearby, drive through on a weekday and see all the old men pottering around in their garages, despite having a newish or nice house. Wonder why they are pottering around doing close to nothing in the garage in the heat (AZ, FL) or aimlessly futzing around the gym or library instead of relaxing on their nice furniture watching TV. And those are the successful marriages.

Know that marriage is a contract with the state. It so little resembles any traditional marriage laws or customs, it really shouldn't be called marriage and take claims of the Trads about marrying under the State rubric with a hearty grain of salt. You can have kids without being married, but be aware of "Common Law" marriages that can take effect by default if you live with a woman (I think California has this as do others).

As a famous divorce attorney said, a marriage contract under the state is like owning a tiger - it's only opening you up to paying damages. What you are expected to provide (safety, housing, etc.) is legally enforceable. What she is expected to provide (support, encouragement, deference to your idea/plans, and especially sex) is NOT legally enforceable. You get no security, not even of regular intercourse, but all the burdens, nor do you have powers to enforce things to keep things stable. For example, until the 70s, in most states men could turn off credit cards and prevent their spouses from working (in case there were gossipy divorced women or a sleezy male supervisor at her place of employment) - that no longer exists, obviously. So you can't legally take steps to prevent problems from further developing, either!

You can have kids without being married, too.

Some things to keep in mind generally in all relationships:

If she starts mentioning a new guy, he IS the one you need to worry about.
A sudden surge in "Girl's nights outs" is a major red flag -2a. as is a sudden increase in overtime or business trips, esp. if it never/rarely happened before.2b. new and frequent visits to family members,2c new 'female' friends she's suddenly hanging out with all the time but you never see much or at all yourself. Girls in love, love to brag about their boyfriends. If she ain't bringing you along or them over to meet you, red flag.2d. Vacations without you is a Car-dealership sized Red Flag2e. You might think the excuse to be out of the house is so brazen ("my Aunt Millie you never heard of has a terminal illness, she lives an hour away. Also I'll be working overtime at the community bank Sunday night from 5-9PM. Uh, yes I know that's the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend... uh, it's inventory. For uh, the coin rolls, yeah, that's the ticket...") that it must be true, but see #4.
"Victim Stories" about past husbands/Boyfriends are generally untrue/exaggerated OR it's a Eurythmics situation (Sweet Dreams Are Made of These...)

The new phrase you hear "Servant Leader" is the latter in disguise, because it doesn't come with the authority of leadership, just the responsibility to serve. You should NOT have to play mindgames or use psych manipulation; the authority should be a legal/societal given; if it isn't, you're just a Servant. Or, you're going to have to live your entire life as a psychological manipulator and fear one day you won't succeed.

No, it's not. If you find someone who you want to be with forever, then that's good. Be with them. Make a life together and try to make it the best possible. Have kids, etc. But never sign a marriage contract. Also, be aware that some states and countries have common law marriage with different triggers where you can become married in the eyes of the law without ever actually getting married. Do whatever it takes to not trigger the standards which would qualify as a common law marriage.

Most marriages fail when looked at over a lifetime. The current court system is designed to extract money from the higher earner and give it to the lower earner. Since men typically are the higher earner, we can take a large financial hit. It can be devastating. A lot of guys I know went from living in nice homes to crappy one bedroom apartments almost overnight.

Then, you have to look at child custody if you become divorced. The mother is awarded primary custody the great majority of the time due to a biased family court system. This results in the father losing out on seeing his kids for significant periods time. Read this sub. Quite a few dads only see their kids every other weekend while paying a good percentage of their salaries in child support. And God help you if something happens and you can't pay. The full force of the legal system can and usually will be used against you in a court of law. Where I live, the child support agency has its own assistant DA just for child support hearings. Child support collection is a big money maker for the government due to Title IV D. Also note that child support is assigned if you split with the mother of your kids even you were not married.

Marriage is a huge risk where you are signing a contract that someone else can break on a whim with few repercussions. I don't recommend it. Good luck to you.

It’s hard to say No. My first two years of marriage were the happiest time of my life. But the last two years were the worst. Being in love and starting a family and life is so amazing and makes you feel purpose and that you have a life partner. But the bad behavior, manipulating, constant arguing and complaining, no sex, disrespect is just unbearable. Also the laws are terrible. I lost my dream house and my truck. I was left with nothing.

Why would it be worth it? What do you even mean by the question? Usually when we ask if something is worth it, we mean a kind of exchange where you give up something in order to gain something. So what would you be exchanging? Freedom of movement? Freedom to spend your own money? Freedom to make your own decisions? Would you be giving up wealth? Privacy? Peace of mind?

For what? What would you gain by having a spouse? A partner, a roommate, a lover? But for how long? How long will she be your partner or lover? Are you looking for a mother for your offspring? Why would you need to marry her?

Are you looking for a sense of purpose? Be careful here, because another human cannot give you a sense of purpose, but if you put your purpose on another person, that person can take it away, leaving you feeling wretched, empty, and meaningless.

Why would you love to have a wife? Why do you think you need to be married to have kids? Married couples with kids get divorced all the time. What makes you think you'd be the exception? You're so young. You need to analyze your own motivations before you do anything. Right now, you're probably too young to offer a woman anything, much less a prospective wife and mother.

Research the laws in your country or state. You might be surprised at just how few rights you have as a man, spouse, or father.

Mathematically, there is little possible benefit. Most adults don't understand marginal tax brackets, so don't listen when they tell you massive tax breaks. Giving her a ring doesn't prove you love her, it proves you're susceptible to marketing and propaganda. If she loved and trusted you she wouldn't demand you get the government involved in your relationship.

I would be retired or close to it by now if I had done things my way. In the end, the same society that wanted me educated thinks I'm mean and haughty because I understand concepts they struggle with. If I do something considered difficult with ease they perceive it as showing off. Now that I'm divorced, the TV says I must be a bad man so they all judge me. It doesn't matter what my wife did, they just insist she didn't.

You're an adult now and people expect you to make your own decisions. Don't take their advice, it'll fuck you every time. Make your own plan and stick to it until you need to change the plan. Just remember, if it relies on another person, their behavior is out of your control and your plan is not really a plan, but a wish at best.

At any point she can say she's unhappy and destroy both your lives. The court system will side with her the majority of the time. Divorce court and legal court are two separate court systems. She can accuse you without burden of proof, and the court will take her word for it. I highly recommend sitting in one of the divorce proceedings in your local divorce court. It's open to the public. Talk to the men there.

If you want kids, you can still have them without getting married. Move to a state that doesn't have common-law marriage. Live in your own separate places. There is nothing marriage gives you that a long-term committed marriage cannot. Tax benefits are negligible. The divorce rate is 50%, and a good chunk of married people are not 'happy'. Women initiate separation/divorce 80% of the time, 90% if they are college educated. The days of 25/ 50-day wedding anniversaries are becoming less and less.

Divorce does not fit humans, IMO. Men are on Earth to popilate by having unlimited sex with unlimited women. Women value provisioning and support. Women are always looking for the best possible option. Some do not act on this.

We can't necessarily blame women for this. Women are brought up with Disney movies, media, and social media that show a knight in shining armor, rescuing them and living happily ever after. It is a fantasy that some women chase. Social media is another problem. Social media shows the 25% of a persons 'happy life'. People think everyone is so much happier, and all they do is go on trips, out to eat, and always get along in marriage. If the marriage is rocky, everything else looks like a better option to her. She gets messages and has potential back up men on her 'friends' list.

Because of social media, women have access to men worldwide. This was not the case 50 years ago. Average 5's can post spamdex pictures and get likes, messages, and d%$# pictures. These same women now think they are 10's and won't give an average man a chance. Men are part of the issue. Men need to stop liking thirsty posts, subscribing to only fans/porn sites, and following/friending women you want (but have no shot at getting). You are just boosting their ego. Validation is currency for women!

Women have entered the workforce, making them less dependent on men. In some cases, they make more than the man. They are around more men on the job and get hit on, more than you know.

Even if you have a girlfriend, set boundaries and look out for red flags. Here are a few:

Dressing sexually
Posting thirsty photos
Having lots of male friends
Lots of sex partners
Etc

If someone calls you controlling for having these boundaries, run. It won't work out well for you. A mans value increases with time. Get in the gym, build your career, sleep, eat well, and do not focus on women. Always be a womans best option and don't slack off in relationships. If you do get married, get a pre nup. Some are thrown out or modified, but it's better than nothing. Good luck.

The marriage certificate is the worst financial contract on earth for men. You have no upside to it, have a ceremony, co-habit, call yourself married, but DO NOT sign the certificate.

Once you sign, remember you are dealing with government agencies that don't operate according to the constitution. For example a Judge has complete discretion to throw out a prenup, this is flatly unconstitutional outside family court. Similarly she can lie and make false charges against you without providing any proof and get a restraining order and call cops for no reason. You will spend years fighting these false charges

I live in an over 55 community. There are not a lot of single/divorcee pp here. Granted I don’t know the entire community. There are lots of couples here who still do things together, walk hand in hand, and I see some where one spouse is physically supporting another who has had issues. Lucky me, I had the crazy wife who wanted a divorce. That was two years ago. Now I know one other guy who’s also getting divorced here. Always thought if we made it this far we could make it to the end. One never knows.

And if you wait til you make more to get married, that's more income and assets you put at risk.

I asked my gf this: what does a piece of paper that allows the government into our bedroom do for us that we can't get done on our own? Name change? Easy. Power of attorney? Easy. Insurance? Who cares, don't get married for insurance anyway. Tax benefits? Make her a dependent or some shit. There is NOTHING that piece of paper will change about our relationship to make it better or make it different, EXCEPT to make it harder to get away from a partner who no longer values you. And it ensures lawyers get paid.

You are at an age where you get to choose before you make a mistake. Official marriage does you very little as a long term investment. Be with who you love and if they love you, they'll just be with you, too.

Hey man congrats, your post has gotten more response than all of mine have combined. Probably because you sad your 19, and most of us have 15 plus years on you and have been hurt by marriage, so you're the sponge to absorb what we all should have heard, except ended up living it out the hard way.

Needless to say, there really is no right or wrong answer that you yourself should choose to abide by from one salty divorcee. I loved my wife till the very end, and ten years where anyone with vision on our life, would be so sure that eventually I would end up the one to feel the need to walk away, except, thru my blindness in pursuit of feeling loved by her how it was early, changing my life and who I was to give everything emotionally to her years 6- thru 9, as I dedicated my life and commitment to regain broken trust from things found out year 6 that happened in year 2, ended up having it all come back around for her long play I guess, and she ended up being the one to emotionally abruptly check out, crush me, then disappear. I get what goes around comes around I guess. With that said...letting guards down is a powerful thing. A delicate thing. And one that can never happen 2 times over in a relationship.

My advice young man, no matter what age, there's no too young to get married, only "unfolding your heart. Only your heart will know for sure. Me personally, I didn't feel fully committed and devoted to it with my heart, until I had satisfied all my whoring random chick's until there was no more satisfaction from it...unfortunately for me, the last 2 of the 250 I guess I needed to lose that urge, bled into the beginning of my 10 year relationship, before we had actually married. We had our first child tho. And we're separated heartbreaking at the time, by circumstance, not a want to seperate. Immature action by me, that was kept secret for close to 4 more years, until our 7th year. Got married in between. Had 2 more kids, and her pregnant with our 4th when I confessed and confirmed to her long term suspisions. My heart matured and blossomed into the understanding of commitment and loving devotion from that point on, years 7-10, while hers, checked out and went the other way until the eventual blindsided dagger thru the heart I had worked so hard on becoming a good one. For love, it was a heart that was finally worthy. Which only made it bleed out harder and more painfully than the one it had grown out of.

Moral being...there is NO REPAIR in a marriage. You can be happy as fuck and fulfilled by everything about it. And it can sustain that way for decades. There's a reason people go from high school sweethearts to Graves next to each other. If you find a person you have zero doubt you would ever consider breaking trust with infidelity, than that's a solid indicator. Don't be the one a woman has to keep a guard up over. YOU be the one who's scared of getting hurt, YET treat her like you DONT feel that way, cuz that pushes away. Be scared deep down and treat her like your life's mission is to always be giving her nothing but reasons to stay. To never doubt. To never let her think about herself being scared to let her gayrd down. Only how blessed she is that she does, for you. That feeling right there, that is the epitome of a relationships balance point. There's only one chance, no matter 1 year, 5 years, 10, or 50, only one change throughout the duration, of keeping that balance point whole, in tact, never broken. You can kiss everything good by if it does.

Sorry long winded in writing of my own regrets I guess. And for the fact that I got fleeced when circumstances at the end showed that I was the one with all the right to walk away. But I kept trying to long, too hard, that I couldn't even see it happening to me.

So, if you don't have a desire to explore what different pussies look, feel, taste like. What every girl's body looks like underneath the close they look smoking hot wearing...then that's a pretty good barometer that you'd have a shot at success in marriage.

But if you in anyway shape or form feel like a girl you're into is not capable of swallowing her pride for the sake of making you feel better, by things she does, says, or treats you like...run away asap! And now that I know this about love from experience, never will again. Fina a sweet kind woman who radiantly shows you're heart is strongly considered for, and the comforting is equally shared. If you just settle as the giver, she will always be the taker. Looks aren't everything bro. The 8,9,and 10s of my life, left my sensitive heart seeing them as 3,4, and 5s. But the 5,6, and 7s of my life that I look back now and missed how they would actually care for my heart...are the ones I would see as 9s and 10s and would do anything to have them at this stage of my life. Make sense? Lol

I think being 19 you are too young to think about getting married. I think you should put your career first at this stage and then worry about getting married. When you a career, you have more options either way. If you don't have a career, you won't have much to offer for a marriage anyway so your options will be more limited.

You are asking this question in a place with massive bias. Everyone here has been burned or destroyed. What sort of answer do you think you will get? Unless you also ask an equal number of happily married men, your data is totally skewed. As a researcher, bias should be a HUGE concern.

My first wife was AMAZING and I was nothing but happy. I loved being married to her and she the same…but she died in my arms of a brain aneurism.

I expected my second wife to be just as loving and wonderful. I was in for a HUGE surprise.

So, THIS man says, yes, with the right person. But how do you always know?
