The child support system is broken and needs to be reviewed and fixed in many ways. As a father who pays child support, I know from experience. My ex wanted to be a welfare mom and she knows how to work the system.

I'm with you on that one :(
Currently around $850 a month...
Edit: I'll add a little more info on this.
I make $37k a year. My son is four, will soon be five. I am 24.

As a 19 year old guy who just got his first job, WHAT THE FUCK?
[–]DoktorTeufel 22 points23 points24 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm glad you're learning about this now while you're still young. Keep on reading this subreddit.
Our court system allows women to use men as disposable resource dispensers, while also giving them a tremendous advantage over men in matters pertaining to child custody and visitation.
This usually isn't a problem if your relationship with a woman is going fine, but if you get divorced or become separated and she's at all inclined to behave unfairly (most people are if a relationship has deteriorated), society will take a shit on you. Note that paternity alone (marriage or no) is enough to get you fucked over, obviously.
And there is nothing you can do about it. Even if you leave the country, many have agreements with the U.S. to enforce child support, and your passport can be revoked if you're in arrears over a certain amount. So unless you can get full citizenship in a country with no such agreement with the U.S., you're probably fucked.
If you don't pay, you go to jail.
Ever heard of that happening to a woman? Ever heard feminists complaining about women receiving preferential treatment in these matters?
[–]Fun2saymukluks 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True. Feminists are not going to gripe if men are being treated unfairly.

Not that I think this is bad advice, but it's VERY dangerous the way we tell guys "use condoms" as if that solved it.
condoms FAIL at a fairly spectacular rate, and at best should be considered a backup from of birth control. Always use condoms...but NEVER have sex with a woman who isn't also using birth control.
[+][deleted] 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
true, but condoms are the only method available to men, and they fail at a higher rate than ANY of the female options.
[+][deleted] 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
[–]McFeely_Smackup 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's also wrong to say that we have to trust women for preventing a pregnancy by using birth control herself.
I don't think anyone is telling men that...or at least if they are, it's spectacularly poor advice.
Men should be doing everything they can to avoid pregnancy if they don't want one...all I'm saying is that condoms are aren't enough, but we tend to act like they're the magic bullet.
[–]xenokilla 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Proof?
[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
condom use results in pregnancy about 18% - 35% depending on what study you read.
Unfortunately, the stat that's tossed around is 2%, with a tiny print footnote "when used properly*, as if the fact that "you didn't use it properly" somehow makes an unwanted pregnancy no big deal. There was even a recent study that showed the Pull Out Method was as effective as condoms...when it was used correctly.
You have to look, kind of hard actually, for "real world usage" statistics, and that's where condoms start looking pretty questionable.
If you want stats, start at google...they're not hidden. hell, start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condom#Effectiveness

18 if you're lucky. The state wants you to pay child support, because they get paid by the feds to collect it, and it's on a per dollar basis.
[–]Fun2saymukluks 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
How do they get to keep changing the rules of the game? That is what I don't understand? Why are we as governed people letting them do this?
[–]Peter_Principle_ 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Part of it is apathy. Women don't care when men suffer, and men don't either. And part of it is a lack of awareness of the problem. Until I had to pay it, I had no idea just what this bullshit was all about, or how extensive the corruption was and how bad the rights violations were.
Same here. I had no idea how bad the child support system had become. My dad had paid child support on me, but he didn't go through all the nonsense that I have been put through, so I never knew it was this crazy, not that I was trying to get myself in this situation to begin with.

As a guy with two kids just divorced - listen and listen hard. Burn it deep on your brain. When your loved one decides its over and there are kids involved you will be fucked and fucked hard by the system. She will have planned your (not hers) departure well in advance. She will lie blatantly to the judge in court about your violent ways. She will make up fabulous stories to further her cause. To add insult to injury she will be shacked up with a new man faster than you can say wtf! I have spent many hours in the family court watching what happens to unprepared men. It ain't pretty.

Meanwhile, my ex just moved into a brand new house by herself. No, I'm not kidding. I'd love to be kidding.

You know... that money is theoretically supporting his child. It's not like he's straight up being robbed, but yes, I agree the system needs revision.
[–]Ted8367 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Andy284 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Does the system check that money goes to the child though? And not on the mother? If it does I wouldn't be so annoyed.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Do you see your children? Would it be cheaper on you if you had some kind of joint custody? Sorry if that is invasive, I've never experienced that system nor do I want too, but I can't say I'm not curious how all that works. 875 seems like a hell of a lot for one child. I have a son, and there is no way I spend 875 a month on him. The most expensive thing is clothes and you shouldn't be buying clothes for your child monthly. Just real curious how anyone thinks 875 is the monthly cost of raising a child..

I have a close friend who pays $450 a month for 1 kid making $17k a year. He has to live with his parents at 24 because he can't afford transportation to work and buying housing. Meanwhile the mother of his kid makes twice as much as he does and openly admits to lying about being on birth control causing the kid to be born in the first place. This system is so absurdly unbalanced, I'm scared to even start a family! How sad is that?
[–]AFuddyDuddy 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
That's ridiculous. That is 28% of your monthly pay, and I'm guessing that 37k statement is BEFORE taxes. that percentage is also BEFORE taxes.
I am paying the same amount on much the same salary...... for 3 kids.
[–]TheChosenOne013 17 points18 points19 points 13 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, it's disgusting. Apparently it will go back down when he starts regular schooling, but until then... To put Into perspective, my monthly rent for my apartment is $875 (that's without utilities and everything). Add on all my other bills, it's no wonder I'm drowning in credit card debt. It's not like I'm buying shit I want either, other than alcohol. I genuinely fear I'm becoming an alcoholic. I'm depressed beyond belief. I've been low before, so low that I tried killing myself, and on that occasion it was a miracle I survived. I've been fine for the last few years until now.
It's too much. Too much money. I applied for (and got) a promotion in my job. That brought my salary up to $45k per year. However, this new promotion is 1000x more stressful than I was expecting, and it's not something I enjoy. I dread it. I hate it. I'd rather get fired than come in. But I needed the money, but I just can't handle this job. I ended up asking if I can go back to my old job on Friday. I will have to just eat Ramen as my meal for the day or something.
I don't know what else to do. I have never been this depressed. Ever. I want to go home. Now.
Other than my fiancée and alcohol, fucking Reddit is keeping me sane. A website. The rare chuckle I get from a joke or picture. I feel like I'm rotting inside. Like I'm decaying. Like there are maggots, writhing and eating me way until there is nothing left.
And the stem of all of this? The money. The money is what is killing me. With that extra $850 per month, I would be perfectly fine. My little extra bills that pile up would be taken care of AND I'd have at least a little money to save. But this new job... I can't handle it. It's getting to me. Since I've started, I have averaged about three hours of sleep per night (without the assistance of alcohol. I don't like getting too drunk before bed though because if I wake up hung over I can't drink in the morning).
I literally just realized this is a huge rant. I'm really sorry for venting out.
[–]Idiopathic77 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Vent away man. Sometimes it is all we have to decompress. When the choice is either vent or hold off until the cork blows the best option is always vent. I hope things turn around for you soon. Until then, remember that self harm is not the answer. The alcohol is also a depressant, try to shave down consumption. Try exercise to wear yourself down for sleep instead.
[–]TheChosenOne013 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Thanks. I haven't harmed myself for a few years, the last time being the incident that should've killed me. Looking back on that, I was mildly upset then compared to how I feel now. Now I feel disgusting. I live close enough that I can go home for lunch during work. Since I started this promotion, I go home, lay in bed, and break down. When I'm done for the day, I go home, walk my dog, lay in bed, and break down again until my fiancée gets home. She is my rock and is the most comforting thing I could ever ask for. Otherwise I feel like I'm dying. Most days I wish I was. I know I shouldn't but I'm being honest. I'd like to exercise and relieve stress, but just walking my dog for ten minutes feels like too much. Not that I get winded from a ten minute walk, but I feel like I cannot do anything else. I enjoy reading, but I don't even have the energy or will to look at a book. I enjoy video games, but I sold most of them for money. I enjoy singing, but music has lost its flavor. To be honest, if I hadn't been so straight laced and good my whole life, I'd probably be on drugs as well, but I don't even know where to begin looking for them. Not to mention its more money I'd be spending so it's probably best that I'm ignorant.
So I feel like I have this cancer. Just infecting my body. Infecting everything I touch. I feel dirty. I feel like I'm tainting everything I look at. I feel like I'm at the bottom of a well, stuck, with no way to get out, looking miles up at the pinprick of light that is the outside world. I don't feel like eating. I want to sleep, but I can't. Sleeping at night only brings the next day faster. I want to delay the next day at any cost. Because when the next day comes, I'll have to spend it dreading the next day. So finally the time comes when I do have to dread the next day, and then I get the dread the day after that. I've already got a head start on dreading Tuesday
And there I go again...

Don't sweat it man. Do you have health insurance? If so, I suggest you look into seeing a psychiatrist. Now don't get upset and think that is a judgement, or me calling you crazy. I'm not. The things you have said here are classic for chronic depression. When even the things you enjoy have no sway to make you happy, that is a chemical depression. One which happy thoughts won't fix. You need support and likely some antidepressant meds on a temporary basis to carry you through. If you go this rout do so with your fiances help. You will have to quit the drinking depending on what medication is perscribed. Do Not mix the two.
You really should do this. I know the road you are on. Both having travelled it myself and having worked with suicidal people. This depression you are describing is not just response to bad circumstances with the ex. You have a chemical imballance that you need to get in check. And if you can, start looking into work that does not exacerbate your mental distress.
[–]TheChosenOne013 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thanks for the advice and no offense was taken. I know I should see someone. I am under my dad's health insurance until I'm 26, so for now I do have the insurance. I might have to see if I can find a good psychiatrist in my area.
I'm waiting to hear back from my boss to see if I can be "demoted" back to my old position. She needed to talk with her boss, who was OOO until today. So I should hear soon. If they say "No, stay or quit" I honestly don't know what I'll do. I can't stay another second. I'm trying, I am, but I can't do this job any longer.
[–]Idiopathic77 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Hold on tight. Be rational and explain to your employers that you appreciate the opportunity they gave you, however you feel that, due to outside matters you cannot give them the type of performance you would be proud of. That you feel that for the time being at least someone with more to give to the position would suit all parties for the best.
Also when you do look for a doctor, I suggest that you find one who can sypathise with your situation. but will also challenge you to get on the right track.
I really hope this all comes together for you man.
[–]AFuddyDuddy 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Nope... no apologies needed man.
I will tell you, it doesn't get any better from a support standpoint. the more you make, the more they take. However, it does get easier if steps are made to attempt to cut some costs. It's daunting, but not impossible. I've been essentially broke for 10+ years now due to that same type of situation.
Working through some frugality throughout the years, a lot of it becomes habit.
/r/frugal can give you some great money saving ideas.
I also tell myself and say, "It's for the kids, whom I love dearly, and they deserve it" followed by a blatant lie to myself of, "She's using it appropriately".
My kids are getting older now, 15, 13 and 10. My two oldest are starting to realize the bullshit, lies, and abhorrent behavior their mothers have done.
I once had to fork over $600 4 days before christmas, because both my Ex and her lawyer LIED in court about my payments. I had signature proof that they were made, but because they were direct payments, with a signed receipt from the mother. Her lawyer stated they were fabricated. The judge called her on the bullshit (at least there was that... there is no way my chicken scratch could write that fluidly), but would not accept them it as it did not go through the state payment system.
The worst part about it..... in the weeks leading up to this court date, it was agreed all around that I OWED NOTHING. Right up until court date. I was robbed for $600 dollars.
I recently told this story to my oldest..... he now understands why that was the only year he received NO GIFTS from me and my wife at the time.
To continue the rant, I was a stay at home dad for almost two years (post 9/11 industry scare lay off). I worked part time from home, and took some college courses once a week. I went back to work full time, and 6 months later I'm getting screamed at for divorce. There wasn't even a consideration from that court that for almost 2 years I was the primary caregiver of my children.
The mother will get preferential treatment 100% of the time. about the only way that can be reversed is if she's is witnessed, by police or some official, smoking crack around the kids (or something of the equivalent).
bottom line of it dude..... Keep pushing on. It's extremely tough at 24, I know..... I was there. I'm only 36 and have teenagers. At some point, I have to believe all the pain and frustration will pay out in dividends.
EDIT: The boozin' can be a huge trap man. Save up a little cash for some 12-16 Oz. boxing gloves, and a heavy bag. Beat the hell out of it. It'll release those endorphins, relieve you of some stress.... and possibly give you a chuckle or three while you are imagining smashing the face of the system. Much better than alcohol.
Punch from the shoulder and hip torque. Aim 4 inches behind your target, and give yer fist a twist close to contact...... feelsgoodman.
[–]TheChosenOne013 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for the advice. I love the boxing idea. I took Tae Kwon Do when I was younger but stopped when I got my black belt. I always liked hitting the bag then.
Yes, my ex is terrible, and knows exactly what to do/say to get me down or frustrate me. And the hardest part? My son worships her and everything she does. Not that he doesn't like me, but if he never saw me again, I doubt he'd care. Because mommy is perfect. Mommy does no wrong.
I know that the alcohol is not a good choice, but part of me wishes it will just end it for me. I know I shouldn't. And you know what? I know I should be happy. I am healthy, have a wonderful fiancée, I have a job, but it's the "it could be worse" that makes me feel even worse. I see homeless people. I see people dying. I watched my own mother suffer and die five years ago. She had the right to be depressed. There are people with no one. There are people with nothing. And thinking about all those that do have it worse makes me more depressed because I shouldn't be depressed.
I'm getting better at saving money. Looking for sales and specials, that type of thing.
I can't imagine just having to fork over hundreds of dollars for no reason. It isn't fair. And you're right, it will always be that the mother can do no wrong (in the courts view).
That boxing idea though... That is the first thing that has piqued my interest in a long time. I do feel like I just need to hit something, and I just never even realized it.

My advice....run away.
Your ex will twist your children against you,and you'll "lose" them anyway.
Relocate to a new country and completely renounce your US citizenship.
I'd suggest an island nation like Japan.
[–]kragshot 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Japan has US extradition...you'd be better off in someplace like Thailand, or China (Hong Kong), or the like if you want to go to Asia.
[–]mechakingghidorah 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True, but that usually applies to things like violent crime,I think. If you renounced your own U.S. citizenship,I don't think there's much they could do,could they?
Japan from what I understand, doesn't have one-sided family law like the U.S. does.

Is 37K a lot?
[–]TheChosenOne013 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's not bad, or at least I don't think so. Not for a 24 year old anyway. I'm proud of my position only two year out of college. "Bad" in my opinion would be making something in the 20k area, which is what my fiancée makes (she is a preschool teacher). Her take home is about $1400 per month. Not TERRIBLE, but not good enough of she were living on her own. Imagine, our rent is $875+ per month. If she were living alone, that's ~$600 to work with. Her student loans are about $300 per month. So bring that down to $300 to work with. Add on gasoline, say, $50 per week, there is another $200 off. That's $100 to work with. And that's not counting phone, food, or ANYTHING to work with.
Luckily she and I love together. So that helps BUT, as you can see, even if we split rent, her portion is only about $400 to work with, not counting other bills. She is a teacher. She was born to teach. I would never, ever pressure her to do anything else. I'd rather eat rice for the rest of my life than tell her to find something else that pays better. I'm putting myself through hell so she doesn't have to make that decision.
Teachers don't make good money. You don't become a teacher because it pays well. To anyone reading, respect your teachers. Especially the good ones who love doing it.
So is $37k bad? In my opinion, no. Not bad. For a 24 year old who does not have children.
[–]Fun2saymukluks 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

sigh I'm right there with you.
My ex wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. With that said, she refuses to clean, cook, or, well, stay-at-home. She settled down after the first one, and things were going great until she stopped taking her birth control pill, got pregnant, and then filed for divorce.
Right now, my monthly child support obligations hover around $2200/month that doesn't include daycare for the kids, insurance, or anything else. When you add it all up, I'm in close to 4K/month.
I've seriously considered leaving everything I have, driving to Mexico, and buying myself a new identity, or, leaving and going somewhere without an extradition treaty (because once you stop paying child support for more than six months, or are more than six months in arrears in the state of Ohio, it's a Felony).

I don't know why you were downvoted, but "having the means" is rarely an issue if you have basic insurance, as most companies would be more than happy to pay a few grand for you to get sniped then have to pay for years of doctors costs while the kid(s) you would have are considered dependents under your plan.

Just had this done, my out of pocket expense was less than $150. That includes the money paid to the doctor's office, the copay on the painkiller scrip, taking my baby-sitter friends out to dinner the weekend after, and the 3 bags of frozen peas.

I am considering this myself, would you care to elaborate on the recovery time? What type of surgery did they perform (I know there's one with a scalpel and one without). Local or general anesthesia?
[–]Peter_Principle_ 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It was with a scalpel. Local anesthesia. It's been about 6 weeks since I had the surgery and I'd say I'm essentially completely recovered. Surgery on Friday (took the day off), I was out of action for the weekend, but went back to work on Monday (surgery was done on a friday). No sex or jacking off for five days after, they said. I was dtf that Wednesday, but the balls were tender, so no 'slamming', or at least not for an extended duration. hth

I think instead of just giving a chunk of cash they should give "child stamps" much like food stamps but for child necessities. Food, diapers, toys etc. , and not alcohol or anything that is no use to a child. People would complain about them, but the well being of the child more important than petty pride.
[–]Fun2saymukluks 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. They could at the very least do random audits and make mothers show receipts on what they spent their income on and check to see what percentage is coming out of the child support. I know my ex was spending my son's child support on her three other kids with two other fathers who have not paid child support for years and only started paying recently.

but the alternative is the man deciding whether a woman should give birth or not? Are you people really advocating this?
No, we're not, don't be stupid. Her body, her choice? Her responsibility. That's what we're advocating.
not the child's fault, and it still needs to be taken care of.
If the child spends any time with the father, then he does take care of it, and he has all the same expenses she does. He has to have a house, a car, health insurance, home insuranc, car insurance, utilites, food, clothing, furniture, toys, phone, internet, computers, and so on and so forth.
Does she pay more for food? Sure. But then again she sees the kids more. That's the price you pay. Trying to make men pay child support to women to cover that disparity is women wanting to have their cake and eat it, too.
The child support system, as-is, is slavery and needs to be eliminated. Even if it weren't, it's still unfair and needs to be eliminated.

Yes, except that the child is the one who is hurt in this case.
Poppycock. If mom is really so poor that she can't take care of the kids then give them to dad so he can. Or she can go on welfare. Or hey, maybe she could get off her lazy ass, get a job and work to support the kids she just had to have. If one job won't cut it, get two.
First of all, could you be any more hyperbolic?
What do you call forced labor backed by the threat of imprisonment, and then ultimately being shot if you resist? Because once you are under a CS order, the state does not allow you to not pay child support, even if you get demoted, even if you get laid off. "Income imputation" is the magic word that keeps you paying. And not paying is treated as a criminal offense.
the woman's rights are not violated.
I don't think you understand what a right is. You don't have a right to force other people to work to support your voluntary choices.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
"Poppycock. If mom is really so poor that she can't take care of the kids then give them to dad so he can."
It's so obvious you know nothing at all form reading your comments.
If mom was so poor that she couldn't take care of the kid and dad wasn't and wanted custody, dad WOULD get custody of the kid.
"Or she can go on welfare. Or hey, maybe she could get off her lazy ass, get a job and work to support the kids she just had to have. If one job won't cut it, get two."
So you think that the government should pay for a child you helped create? Or that the child should ultimately suffer in a case where the woman is unable to earn more income?
If you have custody of the child and she is not paying child support, they are going to be going after her for the money she owes you for the care of the child. It's fair. It's not even hard to understand.
"What do you call forced labor backed by the threat of imprisonment, and then ultimately being shot if you resist? "
I've got to hand it to you. I asked if he could be any more hyperbolic and you took it as a challenge. Congratulations, you were much more hyperbolic.
"Because once you are under a CS order, the state does not allow you to not pay child support, even if you get demoted, even if you get laid off. "Income imputation" is the magic word that keeps you paying. And not paying is treated as a criminal offense."
Yes, and this makes sense. You helped create this baby, and it needs care. Pay it or someone will force you to. And don't give me this shit about not wanting to keep it. A woman does not have to get an abortion because you didn't want the baby. If you didn't want it, you shouldn't have had unprotected sex with her.
"I don't think you understand what a right is. You don't have a right to force other people to work to support your voluntary choices."
The right I am referring to is just a little insignificant right for women to choose what is done with their own bodies. I mean come on man? Are you fucking serious?
[–]Peter_Principle_ 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Heh, ironic.
Your opinion is in direction contradiction to reality. Unless there are extraordinary circumstances (e.g. mom's in prison), dad is going to see his kids every other weekend and every Wednesday, if he's lucky.
Seriously, if you have no idea what you're talking about, then maybe you shouldn't be talking about it.
If you have custody of the child and she is not paying child support, they are going to be going after her for the money she owes you for the care of the child.
No, they won't.
It's not even hard to understand.
It is for you, apparently. Did you just hear about the reality of child support yesterday?
Congratulations, you were much more hyperbolic.
The sad thing is that is reality, and you are so blue pill you don't even recognize it. If you think it's wrong then feel free to demonstrate otherwise. Because the reality is that there are 50,000 men in prison right now for not paying child support. And if any of them decided "You know what? This is tyranny, and I'm going to fight against it." they'd be killed just like anyone else who directly challenges the authority of the government. Surely you're not too stupid to recognize that.
Yes, and this makes sense.
Oh, great! You think it "makes sense" to charge a man CS based on an income he no longer has. You, boy, are officially retarded.
The right I am referring to is just a little insignificant right for women to choose what is done with their own bodies.
The right to choose what to do with their own bodies obviously does not extend to chosing what other people do with their bodies. Since you think it does, you clearly have no clear conception of what a right is. Your rights to autonomy end where my rights to autonomy begin, and that also clearly means making people responsible for their own choices. It also means that you don't hold people responsible in situations where they have no control over a situation, such as situations where women have sole choice in whether or not to terminate a pregnancy, bring it to term, or give up the baby for adoption. Her body, her choice? Her responsibility.
I mean come on man? Are you fucking serious?
I know you're baffled by the real world, but try to keep up. Do some reading on basic rights theory, perhaps.

I don't even know why I continue to respond, considering I've probably said this 1000 times and you've ignored it every time, and also you are under the impression that the government will kill anyone who speaks out about "mens rights".
You said it yourself for christs sake, "making people responsible for their own choices". You had unprotected sex with her, that's why it's your responsibility to pay child support. They don't just grab random men off the street and strap them with child support payments. Yes, the woman has more "power" in the sense that she alone decide what to do with her own body, but that's biology. There is nothing to be done about that, unless you are advocating letting men decide what to do with woman's bodies, then the only alternative is to have the child suffer financially.
So with your fix, the child suffers
Come up with a solution that means the woman's right to do w/e she wants with her body is not violated and the child is not made to suffer.
If you can't do this, I think you would have to agree that the current solution is the best one.
P.S. Don't expect a response if you reply to this comment. I have already wasted enough time repeating things I've said in other comments, and it's now pretty obvious that you are a paranoid lunatic.

I don't even know why I continue to respond,
My hypothesis is that you're too stupid to know what to do next. You're certainly don't appear to have the capacity to engage in reasoned debate.
You had unprotected sex with her, that's why it's your responsibility to pay child support.
You're like the guy who says "Remember that $20 you gave me for xmas and then we never talked to each other after that? I took that money and I went down to McDonalds, and I bought $20 worth of fast food. And then I went back the next day, and the next day, and the day after that. And I kept buying McDonalds. And I got fat. And now I have to go to the gym and work that money off. And the gym membership is expennnnnnnnnsive. You gave me that $20 that started this whole thing off, so now you're responsible. Pay me money."
No, with your fix the child suffers. Child support systems incentivise divorce and encourage women to leave men. This creates single parent households and strips kids of their father, an important role model in a child's development. Children without their father are more likely to end up in trouble with the law, have trouble in school, become drug addicts and alcoholics, and deal with teenage pregancy. It also encourages false rape accustion, false child abuse accusations, and parental alienation in a bid to get those sweet, sweet CS dollars. And, to top it all off, there is absolutely no requirement that CS money be spent on the children.
All these are points that you will completely ignore, of course because that's apparently your MO, but I bring them up nonetheless.
P.S. Don't expect a response if you reply to this comment.
Oh, I don't. I've been bringing up points you've been completely unable to respond for this entire exchange. It was only a matter of time until cowardice took over and you ran away from your own empty assertions.

I agree with you completely. The problem with the system is one of blindless to both hardship and wealth. A symple system based on percentages and fully taking into account both parents earnings and expenses, and the custodial arrangement (if one parent sees the child 20% of the time, he should pay less than someone who sees the child 0% of the time, and more than onet who sees the child 50% of the time (an amicable, even custody agreement where neither party needs "support"; thats a pipe dream, isnt it!)

What you are talking about, 50-50 custody, does exist, and if you have actual legal custody, the man does not pay child support to the woman.
OMG, how can you think that's ok when the child loses when mom doesn't get paid any money?!? With 50-50 custody dad doesn't pay the mom child support! Won't somebody think of the children?!?
Or is it perhaps that the paltry cost difference between 15 days with dad vs 8 days with dad really isn't that compelling of a reason to force someone to hand over 25-50% (or more!) of their income, with the state playing loanshark enforcer?

It's funny because you guys can't even hide your sexist and bias at all. You have to make hyperbolic retarded statements like this.
Apparently you don't understand that the reason the man is paying the woman, is because she has custody of the child. If you have custody, she pays you. The money is paid to ensure the child's welfare.
What you just said implies you either are extremely sexist and bitter, or you just don't understand the basics.
"Or is it perhaps that the paltry cost difference between 15 days with dad vs 8 days with dad really isn't that compelling of a reason to force someone to hand over 25-50% (or more!) of their income, with the state playing loanshark enforcer? "
Certainly does suck when unfair agreements are reached about child support, but that isn't what we're discussing. We're talking about whether a man should have to pay child support to a woman who decides not to get an abortion while pregnant with their baby.
[–]Peter_Principle_ 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
If you have custody, she pays you.
No, she doesn't. Child support payments are one-sided. If by chance a man gets custody (highly unlikely) he will get paid less CS equivalently and be much less likely to collect if she happens to be in arrears, and collection will be much more lenient.
Certainly does suck when unfair agreements are reached about child support
Um, dumbass much? That's the standard custody and child support arrangement. You have no business talking about what other people do or don't understand on this subject when you are clearly so very much in the dark. Educate yourself.
that isn't what we're discussing.
It's the side topic of discussion in this thread (and yet another opportunity for you to demonstrate your ignorance), so rather pertinent.

This is not true. So, really I can't say much more on the matter. Unless of course you live somewhere other than North America. Which I guess is entirely possible. And the way you said "collection will be much more lenient" makes me think you just straight up made it up. Unless you're saying wherever your from, that they actually wrote the law to say, be more lenient to woman paying child support.

It has nothing to do with what I am discussing. I don't care to discuss it. I have wasted way too much time as it is. I made a 2 sentence comment, then I elaborated and passionate morons responded with their propaganda bullshit.
I don't care to discuss failings of the legal system. It happens in many areas of the law and not just child support payments.
"BTW, it's not their baby, it's her baby. The state has been quite clear in that regard. "
No it isn't. Both parents contributed genes to the baby, and that is why you pay child support and can apply for custody of the child, because it is yours as well.
This isn't going anywhere, you are just hyperbolic and refuse to be rational at all. I won't be responding further.

That is what the female body was designed to do. Women in 3rd world countries carry for 9mos. and often give birth in their own beds with little to no help, and they are back to work the next day. I am not saying that it is easy or that all women should do as those women do. But, the reality lies somewhere in the middle. Western women tout pregnancy on a level with having two broken legs and lymphoma. This serves their victim status.

Honestly I'm not all that interested in debating someone with your lack of reason. You launch into personal insults when someone disagrees with your stance. This is the killer of all credibility.
I did read your edit though and will respond in breif. Your orrigional statement focused only on the abject suffering that is carrying a child in pregnancy. Well I'm not sure how many women you have known who have had kids. I have known many, and can say that the only ones who piss and moan about it are the attention seeking immature ones. Most women I know have even shown a level of sadness that their husband/boyfriend will never know the joy of feeling that new life grow within them. To be aware of the beating heart of their unborn child.
In todays world a woman can go behind her husband/boyfriends back and get an abortion without their knowledge. Or she can have a child when she cannot afford to do so and thrust the financial responsibility onto the man. The controll of reproduction is solely in the hands of women and men are getting sick of that. If the primary concern is for the health of women then feminist groups as well as moderate gender relations neutral women would be clamoring for further research and development of artificial woumbs. This is not happening. The availability of artificial woumbs would take that burden completely off of women. Don't you thing they would love that? Turns out that no, feminists fight against such developement, because it would take away some of their power.
And by the way. The damage done to a female body in nine months of pregnancy (something their body is designed to do) is nothing compared to the damage done to a male body over 19 years of work. Even in non physical trades, working places stress and wear and tear on the human body. Compounded with the looming possibility of getting raked over the coals by an entitled ex, that stress can prove dibilitating mentally and even fatal.
I'm not bitter. I have no kids and thus have not been placed into this trap. I simply see the inequality of the situation. As such I promote the idea of the artificial woumb and the male pill. Let me decide for me and my letting you decide for you will be easier to swallow. But as it stands today it is Her Way or No Way. And that my friend is not equality.

Yeah.... I've said nothing unreasonable at all, and the reason I insulted you was because you were being extremely irrational and sexist. Think about if someone was spewing all kinds of shit about Jews not being humans or something. Would you consider it a challenge of your viewpoint and kindly respond with counter-arguments?
Pointing out the fact that women have, throughout history, and still do in less developed countries, given birth with far less safety than they do in the modern first world is not equivalent to building Buchenwald. That straw man wouldn't even frighten the kiddies coming round for candy this holloween.
I do agree that women have the right to determin whether or not to get an abortion. That is not what I am arguing. I am arguing that men get no choices at all. And that we need to change that. The male pill, Artificial woumbs, and hell how about some honesty in a relationship. Like a woman saying to her SO, I want children and intend to have them. Are you on board? Or I dont want kids. Is that a deal breaker? Just that honesty could cut back the numbers of men supporting children they did not want and the number of men who are crushed by their SO aborting a child that they, the man, wants more than anything else in this world.
I do have that solution you ask of me. They are listed above. And the first two of those solutions are actively demonized by Feminists.

Why don't we talk about whether women should have to bring to term their biological children that they helped create by ovulating and having a man ejaculate in her, thus fertilizing her egg with sperm.
Sex is not something men do TO women. Sex is something both parties take part in. Pregnancy is not something men do TO women. Again, it is something that requires both parties.

First the straw man is the implication that pointing out a fact in regards to women and childbirth is equivalent of "Jew hatred"
Don't talk about stretch marks. I'm sorry but while I can agree fully with a womans right to choose I personally find reasons like that to be shallow to the point of personal revulsion.
I am discussing those things because they are pertinent to the issue of female monopoly on reproduction. And that my friend is the source of the issue. Any professional in any science be it engineering or medicine will tell you that one must look to the source to fix a problem not simply adress the symptoms.
I don't suggest laws to force honesty. However repercussions to those who are dishonest are not a bad concept at all. If I were to have sex and told the woman that I had had a vasectomy and I hadn't and she got pregnant unwillingly. When she could have taken her own precautions had she not been misled, I deserve to bear all of the responsibility for that dishonesty. The reverse is also true. If a woman misleads a man and he gets her pregnant due to not taking his own precautions due to her dishonesty. She has unilaterally caused the outcome and should bear that responsibility.
We are talking about men having to pay for decisions made unilatterally by women. I am not talking about men who just go about being irresposible. I am talking about men who are misled and then forced to be responsible for a womans choices.
You don't get it. I don't care to limit a womans choices. I want to expand mens choices. If men have the option to take a pill to prevent unwanted pregnancies and therefore controll their own fertility then those men who choose not to do so get what they deserve and I will not bat an eye at their discomfort due to their own poor decisions. Just as I feel toward women in such circumstances now, as they do have many viable options to avoid such situations.

What source do you want? One of the defining characteristics of a third world country is lack of health care and modern day comforts. Honestly are you being deliberately dense? Women in modern first world countries were having children without medical assistance just over 100 years ago in poorer regions anf 200 years ago even in the upper class.
Source? Read a book dude. Or if that poses too much a challenge watch a documentary. The leading diagnostic tool, which totally revolutionized safety during pregnancy, by diagnosing the common conditions which can cause harm to the mother, is ultrasound/sonography. Which wasn't put into common usage until the 1970s in developed nations. The physical risks to women from pregnancy are at their lowest ever in history and yet some members of modern society act as if the opposite is true. Our great grandmothers often had numerous stillbirths, miscarriages, and risked death due to complications with fortitude and stoicism. Our generation acts as if streach marks are the end of life as we know it.
Here is a really in depth study on maternal mortality done throughout many countries using data over 200 years. Have a look at the graph on page 15. See how it goes down as it goes to the right? Way down.
And don't skip this statistic. "abortion accounted for 30% of the total maternal mortality in Sweden"
Now I'm not holding an anti abortion stance here. But when the "solution" to female risk from pregnancy accounts for 30% of the mortality rate of pregnant women. That solutions eficacy comes into question. It is almost as if the real reason for abortion in most cases were something other than concern for ones physical wellbeing. Like maybe financial worries and drastic lifestyle changes required by the parents....The same issues held by men, who have no say whatsoever.
[–]AllergicToJesus -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Specifically I was wanting a source on birthing with no help and going immediately back to work. I'm familiar with maternal mortality rates, but death is not the only complication from pregnancy.
You have an interesting nonchalance about the birth process.
Regarding your last paragraph, I'd love to hear your solution to a single mother raising a child that requires no financial burden to the father. Do you want the father to be able to veto the pregnancy and force an adoption/abortion? Should the father have the right to bail? I'm genuinely curious. You're looking for a level playing field, and I understand that, I just don't think it's realistic on this issue.

Again. If a woman wants children she can go ahead and select a mate who also wants and can afford to have children. She has the choices, she has the selectivity, she is responsible for the choice she makes.
If a woman choses to have a child with a man who is incapable of supporting that child that is her mistake as she is the one with the options.
Should children suffer? No. But if a man rationally tells a woman that he cannot afford to support a child and she cannot afford to support a child she has options. He does not. If she ignores that and has the child anyway and does not give the child up for adoption she is making the bad decisions. And the man will pay for those. Even to the point of going to prison for not forking over money he does not have.
The solutions are there. As I have said. The male pill. Artificial woumbs. Honesty and resposibility between all concerned parties. And yes that does fall on both men and women.
I am 35 male and have no children. I have not been abstinent. I use protection, I discuss what I want with my SO. If she chooses not to take the pill I will use protection, If she complains about that well too bad. She can either take the pill again or I will absatain. I am responsible for myself. If a SO decides unilaterally to conceive. IE stops taking the pill without letting the guy know, regardless of his wishes. She IS unilaterally responsible for the reprocussions.
I will add that any man who wants to go out and nail anything with a pulse without concern for safety nor sense of responsibility gets what he bargains for. So yes there is two sides of the coin. But as things stand legally and in regards to viable options for the controll of ones reproduction, women are sitting on a monopoly and many still act as if they are the ones getting the less savory end of the reproductive stick. I call shenanigans.
[–]AllergicToJesus 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I'm going to take your last example and run with it since that's essentially worst case scenario. How could it be proven in court that she stopped taking the pill without the father's knowledge?
[–]Idiopathic77 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link
Simple. If she is on the pill and taking it properly she is not fertile. While it is true that some other medications and conditions can alter the efficacy of the pill that is known and if none of those extraneous factors were present it stands to reason that she stopped taking the pill. All she would have to do in that situation is either utilize other birth controll options untill that situation is resolved. If she does not communicate to her mate that she is on a med or that she missed a day or two, and she is aware or the consequences of that, she is responsible as he is unaware of the issue. He is given no choice to take his own precations.
So say it comes to a trial if you will. Woman is 8 months pregnant. That gives a window in which conception must have occured. Was she on an antibiotic? Had she missed a dose or two? Did she mention this issue to him and allow him to take his own precautions? Did she take other precautions knowing the increased risk of pregnancy? If the answers to those questions are, No she wasn't, No she haddn't mentioned it to him that there was a reason for use of other birth controll means, Then the answer is that she, unilatterally decided to take a risk and is therefore solely resposible for the repercussions of such.
This is only because she alone has the knowledge and the options. The reason that I mention the other issues as solutions, such as the male pill, is that this would actually lead to a more shared resposibility. It stands to reason that the individual who holds all of the viable options in a situation holds all of the power in that situation. And the age old saying of "whith great power comes great resposibility" comes into play. This is not the case in regards to modern approach to fertillity. We give all of the power to one group and then turn around and say that the resposibility is either shared or that The other group should have kept it in his pants. As if he alone made the choice to engage in sex and as if after having had sex he had any say what so ever in what took place after the fact. You cannot hold all of the power and none or little of the responsibility. Thats not how it works.
So give men more control. Power they can exercise that does not infringe on the power that women already have. This and only this can level the playing field.
[–]AllergicToJesus -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
If she is on the pill and taking it properly she is not fertile.
False. Birth control pills have a greater than zero failure rate regardless of other circumstances. You can't legislate on that.

I brought this up to my SO when we had a terrible pregnancy scare recently. Having a child is something I've always wanted, for him, not so much. We're both young, he's a year younger than me, so children really isn't on our to-do list yet. But, abortion isn't an option for me, not because of religion but just because of my own personal beliefs and that I could never live with myself if I did that. I know I'd be a good parent and I'd be fine sacrificing my life to give my child everything the deserved.
However, my SO was not prepared for this, which is completely understandable, in fact, I applaud him on that. It's really really hard to go 50/50 on the whole parenting thing with a couple when both halves are at opposite spectrum's. He was more inclined that abortion was perfectly fine and I couldn't live with that. All of my stupid "pro-life" friends told me that it was my body and if he decided to have sex with me then it was just as much his responsibility as mine. But I felt like that was not true. He didn't want a child, I did. I told him countless times that if he wanted out he could. I wouldn't make him pay child support, I wouldn't beg him to stay around. I told him it wasn't fair for him to be a father if he wasn't ready. No child needs a father who doesn't really want them. Children know when they aren't desired and it shows through their behaviors. But he refused to walk out because he couldn't live with himself if he walked away on his own seed. At the same time, he was practically beating himself up for letting this happen and also declaring that his entire life was in the shitter now that he had a possible child on the way. It was entirely devastating. Luckily, I wasn't pregnant after a month of fretting.
Through this experience it taught me that in these kinds of situations men really have no choice whatsoever, which is so unfair. If a woman wants a child, then let her have it, if the father doesn't then he shouldn't have to. No child support or anything. I hate the system...

Even if the man is forced to be a father, he isn't allowed to be a father if the mother doesn't want it. He is merely a bank account; he must pay for his children, but is completely uninvolved in anything dealing with the children.
Not only can women force you to be a father, they can also prohibit you from actually fathering.

Unless you are talking about rape, that is not true.
[–]yself 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Do you say this because you equate becoming a father with having sex? If so, that seems extreme. Do you consider birth control unethical? Do you believe people should only engage in sex for the purpose of reproduction? Suppose a woman intentionally stops taking birth control pills without informing her mate and uses this deception to become pregnant by him. Doesn't that qualify as forcing him to become a father against his will?
[–]TheUsualChaos 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Woah there buddy, no need to get defensive lol. I was simply saying that the use of the word "force" is not the best choice as a descriptor. "manipulated into" or "tricked into" would be far better since they have the added connotation of deceit (that you yourself mentioned).
I wasn't arguing his point, just the semantics.
[–]yself 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
We so easily project emotions onto written text. I only intended my comment as asking questions to try to understand what you meant. I can see now how you can read that list of questions as defensive, but I didn't intend them as combative. In reply to the use of the word "force," look it up in the dictionary. You'll see one of the definitions of "force" defined as, "power to influence, affect, or control." So, I still think women often do literally force men to become fathers against their will.
[–]TheUsualChaos 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh I agree that force can be used, but I view it like those old SAT questions where it's 4 options that are all good and you need to chose the best answer.
For instance, Force implies power and control. It implies that the person doing the forcing has greater power than the person being forced. It requires no subtlety, no mis-information, and no manipulation other than the apllication of a larger force.
Whereas manipulation covers both basis (ie, taking away someones choice and using manipulative measures to do it). That's why I like it better.

You're a good person for thinking this through and for making him think about it. People like you demonstrate that their are good ways to deal with these issues.
All of my stupid "pro-life" friends told me that it was my body and if he decided to have sex with me then it was just as much his responsibility as mine.
This struck me as a strange one sided version of responsibility. I used to fix programming projects as a consultant. I would never take on a project unless I could fire people, because otherwise it was not possible to solve the problem. Giving someone responsibility also means giving them the ability to do deal with a situation.
Your friends seem to think that responsibility means the same as accountability. A baby is the responsibility of the people who choose to have it.

Well I guess I've been kind of ant-child support since my brother got royally screwed by the courts when he and his wife divorced. He was paying more then he made and he couldn't afford a lawyer to help him bring it down so he had so many back payments that he lost his license.
Now he's working two jobs to try to pay that off and those places were the only two that would hire him out of tons because of not having a license. Not to say that the court is all to blame, he was a bit dumb throughout this but I still think he was shafted pretty hard.
Ever since I've never been able to see child support as a healthy thing. It's just draining the father and giving the mother the ability to still be irresponsible.

There are a lot of pro-life atheists. They view it as murder, using their interpretation of the science surrounding when life begins.
[–]Tatshua 14 points15 points16 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It's always life no matter where in the cycle you are. A sperm and an egg are both living things, they're just very specialized and a fertilized egg isn't more concious than a skincell or a cell from any other part of the body. All our cells are alive, so I think it's not really a question of "Is it alive or not?". However, we can talk about if it's moraly right or wrong to perform an abortion. Personally, I don't think it's a yes or no answer, it depends on the situation. Just like someone else mentioned, there's a difference between eating a human and an apple, so it's more about where we draw the line of what's okey and what's not okey than about if it's a living thing or not.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I am more on the side of "when it could have a chance of survival outside the womb, it's life". However, I understand how people could have different opinions regarding that. But at as little as 4-5 weeks, it's hard pressed to call whatever tumor growing in your uterus for "life" to be honest.
[–]Tatshua 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
A tumor is also a living thing. Life has criterias that all cells fit into. A single cell inside your heart, for example, is a living cell. It can't survive on it's own and it's specialized in doing a specific thing but it is still a living cell that needs nutrients, grows, reproduces and dies. It's simply in a big 'colony' so to speak of cells that makes an entire organism. This is, ofcourse, true for plants, fungi, bacteria and a lot of other things that we're very happy to kill, so that's why I don't think it's a valid argument. Even that criteria (Wich I simplified a bit) is debatable in itself as many biologists think we should call viruses life but others don't think they fit. Viruses doesn't fit our current definition but that could potentionally change. A day old fetus fits the criteria of life just as much as a newly born baby. But so does sperm and skincells and the bacteria living in your ass and pretty much everything we eat and try to cure with medicine.
I do agree with you that there's a limit to when it's okey to have an abortion. I think there should be a timelimit.

Abortion has nothing to do with "life". The whole "pro-life" agenda is completely misconstrued. If life was an issue, they would all be breatharians, meaning they wouldn't eat plant or animals and live off the air we breathe and sunlight.
The issue at stake is consciousness. That's why it always amazes me how people will rally against abortion during the day and dine on steak and bacon at night. A cow and a pig have a much stronger case for consciousness than a 2-week fetus.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all pro-abortion and pro-meat eating. I'm just mad as hell at the hypocrisy of some people.

[–]Watermelon_Salesman 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link
People let a tide of emotions and arguments from passion, not reason, get in the way. If they didn't, and stuck to reason and science, the issue of abortion would be much closer to black and white than you would think.
So when you look at a fetus, what you're seeing looks like a small human. So what? Do you realize what mental processes are in course inside your mind to make you empathize with it, even though the fetus is void of subjectivity? Do you know that we are hard wired to empathize with infants? Not only humans, but most species are programmed to protect and care for their young. We look for traits that are typical in babies, but also pups and kittens. Those small sized, big-eyed lovable critters...
I'm not saying we shouldn't care for our young. I'm only saying we should understand what is objectively going on, and let reason, instead of overly emotional mental processes, guide our actions.
[–]Revoran 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Most mammals, not most species.
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I'm arguing, from an utilitarian standpoint, that there is no case for inherent value in fetuses. I have not mentioned disabled people at any point. Don't put words in my mouth. If you want to bring to this discussion a specific case of an adult person that is devoid of consciousness, we can discuss that, but to talk about "disabled people" in general is simply dishonest.
[–]Revoran 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
I think your argument is pretty internally consistent, it's just a case of you putting value in sapience (I assume that's what you mean by consciousness as even a cat is conscious) and me putting value in being a member of the human species.
I have not mentioned disabled people at any point.
Fair point. I was putting words in your mouth, although I didn't mean all disabled people, just those who are basically devoid of sapience (those who are devoid of any consciousness, such as some coma patients and brain dead people, are regularly killed/life support is turned off already anyway).
I would say that many unborn humans (I don't say most because obviously many, perhaps more than half, will be lost in miscarriage and unforseen circumstances that we cannot predict) have the potential to grow into a sapient adult human providing we don't kill them off. Isn't abortion depriving them of that chance when otherwise they had a good chance of growing into a normal adult?
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I definitely do not mean sapience. I mean self-consciousness. Look into Gordon Gallup's "The Mirror Test". There's only about 8 or 9 species of animals that have this reflective quality of consciousness. But granted, the word "consciousness" usually brings a certain amount of confusion. Some authors (see Anthony Trewavas) argue for plant consciousness, for example, although definitely not self-consciousness, but consciousness of some other kind.
It's a philosophical matter of language: to know which maps relate to which territories, and to know that the map is not itself the territory. The word "consciousness" by itself is void of meaning, merely a collection of letters, which are nothing but graphic symbols. But as you go deeper you realize that we're talking about a very specific phenomenon, although language might puzzle things up a bit.
And yes, the fact that they shut down life support for brain dead people is testament to the fact that what we value is not life itself or "human DNA". It's the ability to be a conscious being with some kind of subjectivity that actually matters for moral consideration.
[–]Yes_Its_Really_Me 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, but potential means nothing in that situation. It seems to me you are suggesting that an action should be avoided because it will destroy a potential person. But a potential person is a worthless object. Yes, if you destroy that fetus a potential human life is not allowed to come into existence. But the same argument applies for every single sperm that did not make it to the egg. The same argument applies for using a rubber. And the same argument applies for not jumping the bones of every fertile member of the opposite sex you see.
A literal infinite number of potential human lives are killed every instant, meaning that a potential human life is infinitely worthless.
If you stop a fetus from growing further, you're not depriving anyone. The person that fetus could grow into doesn't exist.
[–]Dathadorne 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link
There's no fine line for consciousness. IMO, Sperm + egg = person
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
There's no natural fine line because those are continuous biology processes, just as there is no natural fine line separating which species of animals are conscious and which aren't. It would really make sense that atheist or rational pro-lifers would be also rallying against the death of some other species of animals.
Anyway, although there is no natural fine line, we can create an artificial one using a fair amount of reason and logic, and I see no justification for why it would be a less valid line. It's quite evident that your stance is irrational, for example. Sperm+egg = person? That's preposterous. A person has an advanced enough nervous system to the point that it grants them consciousness and subjectivity. A day-old embryo obviously doesn't. A 3-wk-old fetus most likely doesn't either. And even if there was even a shred of a spark of neuron electrical activity, would it necessarily be the kind we should care about?
Fetuses aren't people. Dolphins and great apes are.
[–]Dathadorne 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
A person has an advanced enough nervous system to the point that it grants them consciousness and subjectivity.
You're making an assumption here that I, and others, don't. Human is a very stark line, regardless of conscious activity. I wouldn't want to live in a world where people with mental illness were demoted due to your definition.
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's a quite reasonable assumption.
Mental illness doesn't usually turn people into beings devoid of consciousness, so I don't know what you're talking about.
[–]Illiux 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Dolphins aren't people because that word is almost never applied to dolphins; most people would consider an instance of "people" being applied to dolphins to be an error. Welcome to how language works. If you argue anything else, you are necessarily using the word "people" improperly. or more precisely, in a different sense than common parlance.
Also, your artificial fine line is defined arbitrarily. You are implicitly assuming that there is one such thing as "consciousness", something that cannot be inferred from any fact of the word's use. Stated differently, you're assuming that if everyone had their implicit definition of "consciousness" (exemplified in what they consider conscious) made explicit by sorting the full set of all possibilities into conscious and not-conscious, that that sorting would be remotely the same for all humans.
If it isn't, then "consciousness" has an indeterminate meaning (it does). If the meaning of "consciousness" is indeterminate, then an artificial fine line is draw completely arbitrarily. If this is the case, it isn't clear why any moral judgments drawn from necessarily arbitrary bases should be given any weight whatsoever. Therefore, it doesn't make sense to propose that consciousness is what is at stake (in addition to you never actually presenting an argument for that conclusion in the first place).
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Replace consciousness with self-consciousness and it starts to make better sense.
[–]CollegeRuled 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
This is a horrible argument. If all it took to be a person was sperm + egg, then we should be convicting women of murder every time they have a miscarriage. And what about human beings who are in a persistent vegetative state? Are they people? Say they are: then it seems likely that they have a right to decide what happens to them. But what if they left absolutely no directions for whoever else before they became vegetative? Who gets to make that choice? It can't be anyone else because persons have any number of rights, some of which are called inalienable. The problem is that we are too emotional to realize that the words 'person' and 'human being' are different things. All persons are humans, but not all humans are persons. Personhood requires some level of consciousness, some level of self-awareness in order for the idea of 'rights' to make sense. Rights do not apply to non-persons. Do things that have no capacity for self-awareness have rights? Do we say that trees have rights?

murder: The unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another.
Kill: An act of killing, esp. of one animal by another.
[–]CollegeRuled 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If you were to look up the legal definition of murder, you would become aware that one of the central issues with defining it like you did is that it makes certain human beings we ought not to call persons, persons. Fetuses would be an example.

If you can't handle the thought of actually ending it's life then I can understand that, but to say because it's life and then support killing of animals is full on bullshit. I support peoples choice to do as they like, but to call a decision against abortion anything other than a choice is irresponsible.
edit: I'm not saying go kill 1 yo babies, I want to kill babies or you should kill them.
Honestly if it's in your body you should have the right to terminate/remove anything from it that you want, but you better be ready for the choice. If the baby is out of the body it should then be considered as having rights.
I'm not pro life. Idk people on reddit seem to think that mentioning an opposing point of view means you endorse it.
[–]Revoran 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If the baby is out of the body it should then be considered as having rights.
Cool, so we should be able to kill a baby just so long as it's outside the mother? What about if the mother is in labour and decides then that she wants to kill the kid?
If it's a matter of being independant, then you could argue lots of people are basically incapable of surviving without constant care and attention (not just infants)... should we consider those people... people?
In that light, don't you think the "once it's outside the mother's uterus" definition of personhood is a little arbitrary?
[–]Red_Inferno -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If she does not want the baby during labor then she should have the option to give it away if someone wants it. If she decides AFTER she waits the 6-8 months that she does not want it and nobody else wants the baby then it's her problem. She was given all the options and the time expired on her options.
I have considered the aspect of people that cannot care for themselves. If someone is willing to take care of them so be it that is their decision, but if nobody wants to why should it be anyone's responsibility?
My point about it being outside the mother's body being that she had countless points when she could have made a decision to get rid of the baby. At the point where it comes out of the mother well if you wish to give it up then you are taking a bet that someone wants said baby.

Killing other humans > killing animals. We view ourselves as top of the food chain for a reason.
[–]Red_Inferno -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Killing = Killing and Choice = Choice. The thing you should really realize is that being on top of the food chain is not permanent and what happens if aliens come or some animal's mutate past us to the point where they are on the top? What if the elite and uber rich decide they are now the top of the food chain and we the lower class are completely expendable and we either do as they say or die?
[–]iSeven 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If the elite have the means to keep everyone but themselves at bay, and feed off of them, they have earned their right to be at the top of the food chain.
mutate
I think you mean evolve. Again, that's how we achieved being at the top of the food chain. And I don't think animals or aliens would listen if they said "oh hey we weren't really dicks about being at the top of the food chain, so please don't wreck our shit".
[–]Red_Inferno 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I say mutate because it's unlikely that any animal can evolve fast enough to really become a huge threat to humans. It is possibly that something could evolve to kill humans, but it would likely be something that is smaller, but more potent.
The point for aliens is more of a "Oh they are hostile lets kill them" or "They are evolved lets keep them around". Ok lets say there is aliens(it's possible) what if they simply don't want to be on full scale interaction because they know how violent we are? If they gave us their tech or tech to advance us too far they could be at risk from us trying to conquer them.
If they are hostile we are fucked, but if they are intelligent we might server more use for them and a possible symbiotic relationship could be had.
Also the thing about rules and laws is that they are arbitrary and honestly it all depends on choice. What can you live with? Does it effect other people? Will someone be without something they have a right to? Can the act be justified? Did you agree not to do the act and is there is a good reason why it is that way?
[–]utterdamnnonsense 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
As a female vegetarian, I do sometimes ponder the moral analogy between abortion and killing animals.
[–]Red_Inferno 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well both are a choice and both end life. The real question is the reason why both are done. For abortion it's remove burden, possibly save a life, spite or to protect the child from the environment. The reason animals are killed is food, for sport and malice.
I can agree with all but spite in the case of abortions. In the case of animals I can't agree with sport or malice. I also would like it so we don't need them for food either. Honestly using animals for food is high ineffective. Animals create a lot of waste, eat a fair amount of food(most of which has to be grown for them) and then there is also fast spoilage, preservation, and extinction via habitat destruction/pollution.
[–]utterdamnnonsense 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm actually okay with animals being eaten, but the way it's done and at this scale... it's irresponsible. Abortion doesn't really seem scary until around 9 weeks, and then it gets progressively more scary until around the third trimester where I only support abortions in the case of a serious threat to the mother's health (and I feel like that must be the case for most people.)

You can't murder something that isn't capable of suffering. And yes, there is a difference between suffering and pain. Suffering requires consciousness, memories, and at least self-awareness. But a fetus has none of these. Murder is bound by definition to apply solely to persons. You can kill something that isn't a person, such as a plant, but you cannot murder it in the moral sense of the word. That is fact. So if a fetus is not a person you can't murder it. It really is that simple, but pro-lifers would have you believe the issue is 'much more complex'.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So if someone was in a coma you couldnt murder them?
[–]CollegeRuled 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
If the medical consensus was that it was a permanent coma, then no it would literally be impossible to murder them since they would no longer be a person. Well, what I actually said is 'persistent vegetative state' which is a stricter concept that just 'coma'. You can't murder things that are not capable of experiencing suffering.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Im not talking about a permanent coma, im talking about a coma which the doctors cannot be sure of one way or the other. So conscousness may be achieved, it may not.

That isn't what's usually used as a definition for murder. In any case, your argument hinges on the definition of "person" used. What is your definition? Would it include children who don't have a theory of mind yet, for example?
[–]Idiopathic77 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That is a crap argument. If I put a 45 slug through someones brain they will not suffer one bit. So by your premise that isn't murder.
[–]CollegeRuled 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Murder is immoral because it involves the killing of a moral subject. And you can only be a moral subject if you are something that suffers!
[–]Idiopathic77 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The question of life isn't necessarily a religious one, since pregnancy and conception are complex enough without god.

I'm a pro-choice atheist but I have given a lot of thought to what I would do if I had an unplanned pregnancy. Honestly, I'm not sure I could make the choice to abort a child even if I wasn't ready to be a parent. It's hard to predict what my feelings will be when I'm not actually in that situation but I imagine it would be very emotional. Like I said, I am pro-choice but that doesn't mean I could make that choice in my personal life. It simply means that I feel people should have that choice available to them.
[–]7oby 8 points9 points10 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Some women have an incredibly tough time following through on a pregnancy. See /r/infertility and /r/pcos for a selection of women who wouldn't abort even if they weren't ready just in case it came to term. It's an "I might not get this chance again" situation.
[–]stormkeeper 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly.
Even if a woman isn't ready for a kid, but she wants a kid, she'll have the kid. There are always ways to get through it. They won't be easy or pleasant, but they exist.
[–]SgtVeritas 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm not "pro-life" and I am an atheist. I've always wanted to be a father and would do everything in my power to keep the child in the case of an unexpected pregnancy strictly because I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to raise my offspring. Who knows if I'll ever get another chance to create a person, which is my reason for being against abortion in my personal life.
[–]totally_jawsome 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I guess being a mother is something I knew I would be since I was little. I have thought about having children for years. It's not something I want right now but it's just a desire I have for the future. I've worked with children since I was 10 and been a pseudo-mom to tons of kids.
For me, aborting my child would be like aborting my dream.
I also know my emotions. I've had some depression issues and whatnot so going through an abortion would make me feel like I'm losing the chance of having a child.
Also, having kids is really hard for the women in my family. My mother had about four miscarriages between my brother and I, my grandmother had six, and my aunt also had a few miscarriages and gave birth to still born twins. It's kind of precious to be pregnant in this family. Kids aren't easy to have for us. So abortion would seem like a slap in the face to my body.
Edit:: I just wanted to add that I am incredibly pro-choice. I am all for human rights and believe that a woman has a choice. But within that so does any human, so whenever "life" begins to you, so should respect for that life and their future. But that's all subjective to the person and their beliefs. I could never blame someone for deciding that they're not ready for a child. Just in my personal belief system I don't want to abort. Unless it was a situation that called for it.

But you're doing the same thing every time you're not trying your very best to impregnate someone with/become impregnated with a baby.
There are literally an infinite number of potential future human beings that 'die' every instant, because there are an infinite number of different circumstances and behaviours that would lead to their creation. So a potential life is actually worthless. Why? Because that person does not exist. This alone is reason enough, but it also means that the non-existent person joins the ranks of other non-existent people, of which their are an infinite number.
Sure, looking back, your mother's decision not to abort led to your creation. But do not mistake this for saving your life. At that point in time you had no life to save.

I've never heard anyone be against abortion for anything other than religious/spiritual beliefs. Why would you be against it?
I'm not religious, but I'm against abortion.
I am against abortion because human life begins at conception. Any other designation of personhood is arbitrary, for example:
These are all completely arbitrary.
However I don't support the banning of abortion because I believe that such legislation is impractical and unworkable and will create more problems than it solves.
However that doesn't change the fact that abortion is the killing of another human being done, in most cases, for convenience (notwithstanding situations where the mother's life is at risk).
[–]TheRealPariah 7 points8 points9 points 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Why is labeling a baby a human life at conception not arbitrary (given your usage of the term)?
[–]andy4443 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Surely it's the least arbitrary.
[–]TheRealPariah 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
My comment was primarily to note the silliness of the usage of the term "arbitrary," but why is it the least arbitrary in determining what is human life (and the accompanying rights) and what is not?
[–]andy4443 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It's the first point when it will self-perpetuate into a human being (something we agree to kill would be murder).
[–]TheRealPariah 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
It cannot self-perpetuate. If it were not in the womb of another, it would die quickly. This is easily demonstrated by the number of dead fertilized cells which fail to attach to the uteran wall.
[–]andy4443 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Obviously I'm not scientifically illiterate and you are talking about least arbitrary. Further you must consider that law is governed by 'action' and the removal from the womb would be an 'act' of termination. It would potentially grow into a human if you did not 'act'.
[–]TheRealPariah 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think the point at which you are thrust into this world is less "arbitrary" than conception. And I think the point at which you can care for yourself is less arbitrary than that. Do you agree?
Further you must consider that law if governed by 'action' and the removal from the womb would be an 'act' of termination.
So what? Law is not governmed only by action, but by inaction as well. The "act" is removal; the termination of that life is a necessary consequence of the act of removal.
It would potentially grow into a human if you did not 'act'.
Right, it would potentially grow into a human being if it continued to take your nutrients, endanger your life, and inhabit a portion of your body.
Just like it will potentially grow into a human being when it attaches to the wall (much more potential). And even more potential after that.

I'm an atheist and against (only for myself) as well. My reasoning is that is my child and to me there is nothing more important in life than him or her. To me, that is the point of my life, so why would I stop it. I had told my wife before our boy was born that if she got pregnant an abortion was out of the question. She kinda argued with me about it but only for the sake of argument. She threw, its my body and all that stuff at me and my response to all the arguments was that I don't care, that's my kid and if it exist it is being born. I explained that I was willing to do immoral things to make sure my kid was born and not aborted including telling her what she can and cannot do with her body. I meant it to. Glad it didn't come to that.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
But abortion isn't always available... Seems insane that the man can just walk away completely free of any kind of responsibility
It does. But it also seems unfair that a woman can but a man can never do that. It's always the "woman's choice" when it takes two people to make the baby
But its a simple fact of life that a woman gives birth. She will always have more choice in the matter. It seems unfair and it is, as a man I have to just accept that to be honest. 100% equality will never exist in this situation until men start carrying babies

I knew a guy whose wife threw him out of the house, and said she was going to keep the house, children, and savings, and squeeze a fortune in child support.
Knowing that she would also deny him access to his daughter, he made her an offer of something like: "Instead of a fixed amount each month, I will pay you $1 for every hour that I spend with our daughter, which you can then spend however you wish when she is with you." It seemed sensible to me, since it would then encourage his wife to not be a jerk about access to the daughter.
Of course, his wife wasn't interested in the deal, and said she was going to take him to court and get him for every penny she could.
Realising he was about be royally screwed, both financially and in terms of access to his daughter, the guy resigned from his job, and went back full time to university to study art history. He told me he loved it, and had only been doing his previous job to support his family. Now that his wife had taken his family from him, he had choices again.
[–]springy 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sure, but as my friend said "they can't take what I don't have". He did get lots of nasty letters and threats from his wife's lawyer, and just said "I would love to work, but the whole divorce has made me a nervous wreck, and incapable of doing my old job." Now, his ex-wife could have wasted her money and her lawyer's time on pursuing him, but she had already stolen everything he had (children, home, savings, and dignity) so there was nothing left for them to go after: even with a court judgement, you can't take a dollar from an empty pocket.
[–]corpseflower 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Wait, how is your friend able to go back to school? i thought you HAD to work to pay child support. Like, if you took a lower paying job, the courts would demand that you pay as if you were earning the old high paying job, or face jail time.
[–]springy 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He claimed the stress of the divorce made him unable to do his previous job. He even found a nice doctor willing to write him a note supporting his claim. He claimed he would go back to work when he recovered mentally and emotionally. All told to me with a wink of course.
In terms of suing him for higher child support, he said "they can sue me for all they want, but they can't take what I don't have" - and so he never faced any kind of jail time - just a frustrated ex-wife.

Well, what are the courts going to do, when his wife has already taken his children, his home, his savings, and his dignity? He has nothing left for them to take. They could lock him up, I suppose, but that wouldn't help anybody, and it would waste a fortune in legal costs.
I'm surprised they didn't put him in jail. Our legal system is just that absurd.

This is the standard response to the "a man should have thought about that before having sex" argument: it cuts both ways.
Really every argument to support the disparity cuts both ways, but people in support of the disparity seem to rather want to use drive-by rhetoric than honest, cogent, valid arguments.

If you feel like being nauseous, go and read the comments on last week's and this week's Savage Love (a sex/relationship advice column). There's a huge abortion discussion in the comments. 99% of the posters take the feminist position that the choice is entirely the woman's. There are tons of comments like "the woman decides and the man lives with it," "[t]he point of ejaculation IS WHEN MEN MAKE THEIR CHOICE," and the one you point out, that if men don't want a child then they simply shouldn't have sex.
(As an aside, there are also several saying that "[a]ny man who is against his girlfriend's having an abortion can always exercise the ultimate choice--have a vasectomy!" This is maybe the dumbest possible argument. I'm a male, in my mid-twenties. Right now I have no desire for children, nor am I in a position - financially, professionally, or emotionally - to raise them properly. But that might change in the next decade, and I'd really rather not prematurely limit my already narrow options.)
Anyway, the one sane poster taking the men's side responded with this gem: "People who would be apoplectic to hear someone say "If she didn't want to be a mommy she should have kept her legs closed" will happily turn around and say "If he didn't want to be a daddy he should have kept it in his pants" and the hypocrisy is entirely lost on them." This argument was promptly ignored amid a cacophony of reasonless shrieking.
It's disgusting.

As a male in his mid-twenties who did make the choice to have a vasectomy some time ago, I have to tell you: I don't regret it, I haven't for years, my wife doesn't have any problems with it, and we are free from any concern with this.
Any man who plans to go his own way damn well better get a vasectomy for his own safety.
At least until the FDA approves real male birth control methods.

Only if the woman agrees.
What country do you live in?
I know plenty of fathers that would have been willing to do so prior to birth because of the terrible relationship status they had with the mother (or in several cases, the mother's parents). In one instance, the father or the child hasn't been allowed to even see his child since birth due to a court order obtained by the mother's father -- yet he has still had to pay support for the past seven years now despite never once seeing the child in person. And no, it wasn't due to abuse but a misdemeanor marijuana possession citation in high school.
[–]macgyverftw 11 points12 points13 points 13 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Going through pregnancy vs. having to pay for (almost) the rest of your life a fuckton of money and therefore having to pretty much enslave yourself in order to get that much money and still be able to live a somewhat decent life, with a good chance that one day she will just leave you and take the kids while you have to continue paying while hardly being part of your children's life.
Yeah, where can I sign in for the pregnancy part?
I don't wanna say that pregnancy is an easy thing or that it doesn't come with any risks, but if I could choose, I wouldn't hesitate a second to go for being pregnant than for being likely fucked up the rest of your life. Not to mention that pretty much every mother will tell you that child-bearing and giving birth may be hard and really painful, but it's also the greatest and most wonderful gift in live.
[–]CollegeRuled -4 points-3 points-2 points 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I don't believe it's as cut and dry as you think here. A judge isn't going to slap a dad with thousands of dollars of child support without at least some kind of reasoning. Both parents are responsible for their children. Both. Not one, not the other. What happens to the relationship between two parents might be unfortunate, but ultimately in the eyes of the law you are BOTH responsible for the child.
[–]macgyverftw 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's the theory. Just look around in this sub, you'll find that this is rarely the practice. Men have pretty much no chance to get custody in most countries, but they can be easily forced to pay a lot without being able to take a big part in a child's life or even see it at all. So, often the only responsibility for men is to pay, without any chance to turn the stick around. That's not fair at all.
[+]CollegeRuled -11 points-10 points-9 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
But I think you also have to look at the history of women with respect to their children. It hasn't always been so 'easy' for them to get custody. This was probably the case in the 50's when men were generally regarded as 'head of household' and such other elements of the traditional model of parenting. Perhaps men just think they are losing out when in reality the playing field has been made more equal.

Wut, in order to get custody as a man you have to overcome social and legal obstacles that are almost impossible to take. Yeah, if you'd be a stay-at-home father, your chances of custody would greatly improve, but try to find a woman that a) lets you stay at home while she makes the money and b) makes enough money so you all together can live a good life. Good luck on that.
I would like to be a stay-at-home father, but I know that my chances are almost zero to achieve that.
What happened in the 1950s was less what you describe and more 'women were being forced to stay in unhappy marriages.' It was terrible.
We've solved that equality issue, but gone and created a new one. They are separate issues and the formation of a new imbalance is not justified by the presence of a past one.

Half of the child's genes are yours. The baby is not just the mother's or the father's, but is something that both parents are jointly responsible for. This is internationally recognized and has an extremely robust legal precedent. Claiming 'you weren't ready to have a child' is not a defense for either parent. And any competent judge is going to see the difference between a deadbeat dad just trying to shirk his responsibility, and someone who has an actual case to be made that they shouldn't be responsible.
[–]Nepene 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
How do you know that any competent judge is going to see the difference between your two types of men?
Also, the mother is free to send the child into adoption on her own, the father isn't. The mother has no responsibility to actually raise the child.
[–]geodebug 12 points13 points14 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Half of the child's genes are yours.
Irrelevant. Half the genes are also the mothers yet we are arguing she should be allowed to terminate it at will. Nobody is confused about the biology.
but is something that both parents are jointly responsible for.
Part of that responsibility is accessing if you're ready and willing to be a parent to the unborn child. Both adults should get that choice. Today only one does.
is not a defense for either parent.
Why do you need a defense at all? This is a medical and financial decision. Are you arguing that women should also have to go to court before terminating a pregnancy?
And any competent judge is going to see the difference between a deadbeat dad just trying to shirk his responsibility, and someone who has an actual case to be made that they shouldn't be responsible.
You're off topic Nobody is arguing that a father who accepted the responsibility gets to 'shirk'.
This is all about pre-birth where choices can still be made.
[–]BadArtStudent 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't think a lot of MRA's would have an issue with that if all men were then entitled to half the child's time so to speak. Not the 3 hour supervised every other weekend visitation situation that is happening now.
It is the man who has to work, so surely he should have a little more say about how his money is spent?
[–]silverionmox 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The problem is that this currently also gives them decision power about what happens with the man's life for the next decades. The decision to opt out of pregnancy should be hers, but that automatically gives her the power to opt out of parenthood as well. Currently the woman's decisions about what should happen overrule the man's. It's not possible to give the man a right to become a parent if the woman doesn't, because it's technically impossible to disentangle her decision not to be pregnant and not to become a parent (the best we can do is provide a legal framework to make it easier for people to voluntarily agree to let the woman complete the pregnancy, but would leave the parenting to the male). It is technically possible, however, to give a man the same right of opting out of pregnancy as the woman has. We can discuss the conditions and timing, but I don't see a reason to deny one parent the right to opt out of parenthood if the other has it.
[–]altmehere 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
It seems like usually when this is pointed out they take refuge in the "but now the reality is that she's pregnant," completely abandoning that argument anyways.
IMO that's still a poor excuse (along with "now that there is a child the man should take responsibility"), but it seems to be fairly effective due to the emotional nature of the topic.
[–]TracyMorganFreeman 30 points31 points32 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Ah but women aren't aborting a child they're aborting a fetus, and it follows that men aren't creating a child they're creating a fetus. There is no monetary obligation to a fetus, and the woman by virtue of unilateral decision making is the one who decides to have the fetus become a child.
[–]stemgang 25 points26 points27 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
True, the man is responsible for helping the woman to create a fetus.
His maximum liability should be 1/2 the cost of an abortion.
If she chooses to develop that fetus into a baby over his objections, it is entirely her responsibility.
[–]CptSeaCow 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've talked with people about it. I honestly would be willing to pay the full cost of an abortion. Better than the current situation and it isn't like abortions are simple procedures with no health costs. They aren't that expensive either in comparison to 18 years and a compromise I would be willing to take

I think that if a women gets pregnant under the clear understanding that both parents were doing it on purpose, but then the guy backs out, child support. (Same with a girl, if she has the baby and the guy is single dad).
If it happened by accident, then they should both be able to opt out. Women wants to keep it? Then it's her choice. The only time anyone should get forced child support is when she has good reason to have expected support in the first place.
[–]Boomer84 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'd like to see you prove that either way.
[–]Merawder 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That is an excellent point. Think of my opinion as the theory of how I think it should be handled. In practice the theory might have to be a bit compromised.
Right now the theory is "you made it, you're responsible for it". In practice this holds pretty true for men, and women are increasingly being given the right to ignore that philosophy.
If you do actually want to know how I'd put my theory into practice it would be based on 'proving' that the parent did commit to having a child.
Like, other than having actual hard proof (like an email or text) saying the parent showed intent, there would be other ways to setting up a case. If you had been in an ongoing relationship, and could find friends and family willing to testify that the parent had acted positively about having a kid, perhaps.
I know that still leaves a ton of room for the system to be abused, but it would make more sense than what we have now. TBH, my post really was more concerned with the philosophy behind such laws

JPG doesn't even have to do that. They could save it at the highest quality and it would look fine.
[–]deejaweej 12 points13 points14 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
JPG is a lossy compression method to begin with. The resolution it would take for zero loss would likely be larger than a bitmap. You can get near approximations but in some areas the image will still lose quality. Text unfortunately suffers the greatly from this kind of compression, which is why JPG is a poor format to save images with text in them.
For the purpose of this discussion however, it likely doesn't matter.
[–]Hypersapien 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I meant that it would look fine the first time they saved it. Once they started saving it over and over again, it would start looking like crap.
[–]TechnoL33T 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Saving it doesn't drop the quality repeatedly. Re-encoding it does.
[–]ChakraWC 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The point of JPEG was for compression, though. I sampled a "highest" quality Yahoo!Answers question, and it came out at 162KB. The lowest quality came out at 35.1KB. PNG? 31.8KB.
JPEG is fine for actual pictures, not for information.

png is a lossless compression format. It takes up less space than a .bmp image, but still has all the information. Magical, I know.

This is just another symptom of our ad hoc system. The rights of men and women have changed so much in the last hundred years and a lot of the systems we've had in place have not kept up with those changes.
This explanation can work for almost every system between women and men that has a high level game-ability. It was developed back when the system needed to be skewed one way or the other, but now that men and women have moved closer together in rights those old systems are now dividing us and holding us back from true equality for both sides.
[–]yself 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm pro-choice, but I also believe a baby has rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," at some stage even before birth; a stage determined by law. I believe the state has a constitutional interest in defining when the baby becomes a person for this reason, because I believe all people have rights and an unborn baby is a person too.
This thread led me to an interesting thought experiment. I'm probably not the first to consider this idea, and I'm interested in learning what others think about this thought experiment.
Suppose, in the future, we had medical breakthroughs making it possible to sustain the life of an embryo in vitro, without requiring anything from the mother after conception, and sustain the life until it becomes a fully developed baby. Furthermore, suppose these medical breakthroughs could also make it possible to transfer a developing human from a female body at any stage of development. Thus, the transfer could happen as early as removing an egg from the female body, or at virtually any other stage of development. This would put the issue of the rights of the mother to control her own body in a different perspective. If a mother decided that she did not want to sustain the pregnancy in her body she could schedule a transfer. However, doing so would still obligate her legally to exactly the same kind of responsibilities as those faced by a father. She would also have the same kind of custody and contact privileges granted legally to a father.
Philosophically, I believe we currently only have a vaguely defined sense about when the life of a human person begins. We then use this as a basis for our legal demarcation of when the life of a human person begins. If we had the kind of technologies described in the thought experiment, then I think the state would face a different issue about the legal rights of an embryo. Since we have no scientific way of knowing precisely when the life of a human person begins, and the life of every living embryo could potentially become a human person, the state, in the thought experiment scenario, could face law suits forcing it to become responsible for protecting the life of every living embryo. Otherwise, it would run the risk of potentially terminating living persons with rights guaranteed by the constitution. Currently, the rights of the mother to control her own body complicate this issue.
I don't understand the legal reasoning that leads to saying that the state must legally obligate fathers to have financial responsibilities over their unborn developing embryo while also allowing mothers to terminate their unborn developing embryo. It seems inconsistent to me. If a woman wants to have a child, but the father would prefer an abortion, I can understand that the woman should have the right to decide about what happens to her own body and refuse to have an abortion. However, this would seem to mean that she should also assume full legal and financial responsibility for the child after birth, unless the father willingly agreed to assist. It seems to me inconsistent to say the developing fetus is not a human person until after it reaches a certain stage and also say that the sperm of the father carries with it certain legal financial obligations when it reaches the stage of conception.

Another good question would be, if a man gets a woman pregnant and wants to keep the baby, why is it OK for her to abort it without his consent? If he aborted the baby without HER consent, it would be illegal.
So then that makes it HER baby. Not HIS baby. So why then would he be forced to pay child support for HER baby?

I've been suggesting to people I know for years that men should be able to have a 'legal abortion' which basically means they don't have to pay anything towards that child but they do give up any parental rights they might otherwise have. People look at me like I'm crazy at first but the more I explain it the more they see I make sense.
I have never understood the mentality of "you shouldn't force someone to be a parent if they don't want to be!" Why the hell not?? As an adult, if you sleep with someone and make a baby, then guess what, you have to be a parent now. We don't get to just bugger off and abandon the kid we create - or worse, kill it outright before it has a chance to be born. It doesn't matter if it was in your little plans or not. What matters is that you step up to the plate, take responsibility for yourself, and do the best you can as a parent to that kid. That's what adults are supposed to do. It is incredibly selfish and cowardly to cast off your child because you can't be bothered to raise him.

Makes sense, but only before the abortion limit has passed. There should be a kind of a male "legal" abortion, giving up both rights and responsibilities.
[–]macgyverftw 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exception: When the woman fails (on purpose or on accident) to inform the father of the pregnancy, then it's automatically assumed that he opted out and every support he offers is voluntarily and can be cancelled anytime (with some exceptions to the "anytime" at cancelling if there is a reasonable expectation/promise that he would pay for some time, like: "I'll send you 200$ a month until you find a new job [requirement: she has to be actively looking for one]").
This is why there are "dead beat dads" but no "dead beat moms". If you're a dead beat mom, you just get an abortion.
[–]themountaingoat 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Or just get the father to pay for you. We generally don't expect women to pay for their own children, so we don't criticize them when they don't.
But what i mean is there are times when the man doesn't want a kid but the mom does. she has it and because he doesn't want it, he's a piece of shit. but if the tables were turned, there's a chance that the child is simply never born to sit there and think their mom was shitty for not wanting them. You know?
[–]BoneyAz -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Wouldn't the logical extension of this be that if the man wants to keep the child and the woman doesn't that he has the right to deny the woman an abortion? That's a moral minefield.
[–]Sybarith 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
He has the right to denying paying for one.
[–]BoneyAz 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sure, but if the woman can have the child against a man's will and then in some cases force him to pay child support, why can't a man have a child against a woman's will and force her to go through child birth?
Note: I'm not actually advocating this because the effects of child birth are not equal between both parents, but I'm bringing the argument full circle. I'm reversing the gender roles of who wants to keep the child and the argument seems to make less sense.
[–]themountaingoat 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think that is because it doesn't seem right to make someone have to go through pregnancy. The "it's her body" argument does have some validity going this way.
Even as a woman I've never understood why men can be forced into paying support for a child they don't want. Makes me glad I am one though, cause I'm not fucked in the ass if my partner doesn't have that abortion.

One of my first comments on reddit was on this very subject.
The thread was discussing something called the financial abortion, whether that's a real thing or just a name we gave it I don't know. I outlined a set of rules as follows.
Rules:
1 - It is presumed that under circumstances where no documentation exists a father wishes to not take part in pregnancy and child rearing, waiving all rights of parenthood to the subsequent child, and thus the mother may decide whether to pursue pregnancy and child rearing with limited to no financial support. Details to be expanded by the following subsections.
1.sA - should the father wish to pursue child rearing the father may, sign an affidavit to that extent with the stipulation that all rights and responsibilities, inclusive of child support may be levied against the father. **1.sA.1 - **The father also acknowledges the right of the female to abort under current abortion guidelines, due to personal wishes regarding use of her body. **1.sA.2 - **This document must be signed prior to delivery of child, or within 6 months of learning of pregnancy.
2 - should the female wish to carry through with the pregnancy, they will be eligible for support payments to subsidize the cost of pregnancy, as outlined under reasonable expenses for pregnancy.
3 - if pregnancy results from rape or other sexually violent acts against the victims wishes, the perpetrator will loose all rights to the child, and may be expected to cover additional child support payments to be garnished from their wages for the life of the perpetrator.
3.sA - should the perpetrator be female and wish to carry the child forward to term, the victim may choose to raise the child or release the child to adoption. The victim may attain parental rights at anytime prior to adoption or delivery, whichever happens latest.
4 - in situations of marriage, it is presumed that the father wishes to pursue pregnancy and child rearing.
4.sA - if the father does not wish to pursue parenthood under marriage, the father will have 1 month to inform the significant other and declare the intent to waive the right to parenthood and financial obligation. **4.sA.1 - **the father may be required to financially support the child until the age of 6. Despite current marital status. **4.sA.2 - **should divorce proceeding occur child rearing costs and expenses are eliminated from the proceedings and negotiations as long as the father has filed the declaration to waive the right to parenthood and financial obligation form as discussed in 4.sA
5 - any coercion, deceit or dealing in bad faith in relation the the above mentioned rules may force the perpetrator to waive their right to parenthood of said offspring, and be subject to fines, penalties, child support payments, and possible jail time for no more than 6 months.
5.sA - a person may dispute these allegations and evidence may be provided against or for their case, in the form of signed affidavits, prenuptial agreements, forms declaring the waiving of rights and responsibilities to child bearing as outlined in 4.sA, Etc.
Summary:
These rules presume the right to a person(male or female) to wish to not be a parent, and to not support child rearing. Under this assumption the parent may sign a pre arranged document citing their witnessed denial or acceptance of child rearing and financial obligation.
This way should a woman wish to decide on whether child rearing is an option for them they will have an informed decision on what support is available for them. They may then choose to pursue pregnancy, adoption, or abortion. The only child support to be offered by unwilling parents would be to split the cost of pregnancy.
The last rule is there to make sure no one can be tricked into being a parent through coercion or deceit. I can't go to a woman, promise I will support the child, have sex with her, and back out; a woman can't steal a mans sperm and try to turkey baster a baby under rule 5.

I have custody of my son and due to me not pushing an issue, the mother doesn't have to pay child support. The last time she had to pay was a year ago and it was $50 a month. She walked out when he was 4 months old. Also, the judge said that in Ohio if she had another baby, she wouldn't be obligated to owe child support because of obscure laws. Of course, she did that via one night stand with a barfly.

Ay, there's the rub.
Let's say Man and Woman have sex, Woman becomes pregnant.
Woman has the choice whether to bear the child, or to abort the pregnancy. Man has no say in this choice whatsoever. If Man wants to keep and raise the child himself, and Woman wants to terminate, too bad for Man. If Man wants to terminate, and Woman wants to keep and raise the child herself, again, too bad for Man.
Most specifically, in this latter case, Man cannot choose to be relieved of responsibility for a child, and is forced to pay child support. Woman, through terminating the pregnancy, can choose to be relieved of that responsibility.
If Woman and Man do not want to remain in a relationship with each other, but each wants to raise the child, the child will almost always be raised with Woman, with Man visiting occasionally. Again, too bad for Man. If just one of the two, Woman and Man, does want to remain in a relationship, but the other does not, the child will certainly be raised by Woman. Too bad for Man.
Yes, it is absolutely true that for much of history, women did not have real control over their reproductive capability, and that was bad. Women were forced into positions of lifelong responsibility that they did not choose. Women should have the right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy, not to choose "what happens to their bodies," but to choose what they will and will not be responsible for.
However, the way this is implemented in the United States is to swing the pendulum entirely the other direction, giving female partners rights over their male partners. Men can and are forced by women and the state to accept a responsibility that the courts have decided that women should not be forced to shoulder. The cognitive dissonance here is deafening.
If women should have complete and total control over the choice to terminate a pregnancy - and it's quite arguable that they should - then men should never be forced to support any children in any long term way. I think a one-time monetary payment, in about the amount it would cost to safely terminate a pregnancy, would be appropriate. Beyond that, men should have the right to choose just like women have the right to choose.

I was talking to my friend about this - he and I share very similar beliefs on politics, religion, gender rights, etc - and he was left speechless when I posited this idea. That's true... Wow...."
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I completely agree with this.
I think it should be completely fair though, if a women must pay for an abortion, then the man must pay some sort of court fees/penalties for signing over his parental rights. It should be the approximate cost of an abortion for him to sign away his rights. It's important that this must be a legal issue, so that no one can be taken advantage of, and everyone understands it's a forever kind of thing. No signing away rights only to demand you see your child, no claiming them on taxes, or using them in any significant way. I think doing it that way will protect both the mother, and the father, while at the same time, maintaining some level of fairness.
Edit: Think of a fair way to establish financial abortions and get down voted because no one wants fair, they want easy.

I agree that a man should be able to sign over his rights to a child before it's born (just like a woman can with an abortion) and therefore wave any monetary responsibility to it, however if a man doesn't wave his rights and tries to raise the child, but realizes 6 months down the line that it's "too hard" (not saying a lot of men do this, but I know men that have) then NO, keep supporting the child you said you would support. It's not fair to promise the mother support and then pull out the rug from under her feet once the kid is born.
[–]Samccx19 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Don't know if I 100% agree with this. Yes I agree with it in the case of welfare mums, but child support was originally designed in the best interests of the child. Let's say the mum hotfoots it leaving a minimum wage dad with a child, it's in that child's interest that it gets the financial support it needs. This works both ways round. The system ain't perfect that's for sure, but scrapping it altogether would hurt children more than the other parent.
[–]SheriffBart42 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You need to factor in the possibility that the child can be given over to the state/adoption without any financial penalty. An option that women who decline abortion can exercise. Therefore, women can give up their financial responsibility, but men cannot unless the woman wants to as well.
[–]Samccx19 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Granted, that is unfair. I think there should be a limit on child support, like if the woman is earning over X amount. It should be a progressive limit as well. It should also, however, be based on what the man earns.
I detest your assumption that the man should be the one handing over child support payments.
[–]Samccx19 -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ok I worded that badly, don't worry I'm not a feminist. It works both ways, that's why I put the final sentence, hoping you would get my drift.
[–]springy 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If money is so important, then the child should be given to the parent that has the financial resources to best raise that child, rather than automatically to the woman
[–]Samccx19 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree with this, but we should also take into account the mental state of the parent. Middle income stable parent is better than wealthy unstable parent.
[–]darwin2500 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
It's not about either parent's rights, it's about the good of the child. Suggest a workable alternative that provides equal support for the child, and we can talk about it.
[–]springy 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
How about when couples split up, the courts ensure that in 50% of cases, fathers gain primary custody of children and women pay child support? When women have an equal chance of being on either side of the decision, they will fight just as hard for laws to be fairer than they are now. They may even fight harder to keep their marriage together, since divorce will be less of a winning lottery ticket.
[–]Nepene 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In some cases neither parent will be worthy of raising the child (serial rapists for example) or one will be much more worthy. I'd prefer some sort of system where in most cases you had equal custody unless there was some evidence of abuse.
[–]darwin2500 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Are you suggesting the judges flip a coin, or that they apply different standards to males and females so that the custody decisions average out to 50% overall? (and I understand that different standards are applied already, I'm just asking about your solution)
Currently the same standards are applied, if you are a woman, you keep the child, if you are a men, you pay.
It should be decided on other factors than what's between their legs.
[–]darwin2500 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
C'mon, my post was only 2 sentences, and you ignored 1 of them?
(and I understand that different standards are applied already, I'm just asking about your solution)
[–]springy 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Pretty much flipping a coin, yes, unless the couple agrees to their own custody arrangements.
'Flipping a coin' meaning if one parent is a drug addict and the other isn't, it's still 50/50 which parent the kid ends up with? I don't think this satisfies my 'equally beneficial to the child' criteria.
[–]themountaingoat -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The best interests of the child only seem to matter when it comes to overriding the rights of the father. The mother doesn't need to even let the child know who the father is. If we actually cared about the best interests of the child we would force couples to live together and share custody.

A father walking out on his kids is incredibly destructive and irresponsible.
A sexually promiscuous girl aborting her child is also incredibly destructive and irresponsible.
These are both bad things, not both things we should consider acceptable.

Yes, but it makes it less remarkable, which is the only reason this ancient, tired, well-discussed argument, which has shown up many times already in the past few weeks here on reddit, managed to make it to the front page this time.

It's about allowing for the most resources for the child. It may seem a bit unfair but you STILL are taking the risk of fertilizing an egg.
Besides, an extra bill every month? You don't even have to stay in the PICTURE. You should thank God your child will have enough money for clothes and food.
[–]themountaingoat 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Funny how we only seem to care about the best interests of the child when it doesn't inconvenience the mother in any way.
[–]ElixaRx 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, what do YOU propose? Either way, prolife mothers & negligent sperm donors are abusing the system every day.
[–]Morel3etterness -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There are rights and wrongs to both. Cant expect a girl who was raped to have a child or give birth to a child if shes too young or the baby will be born with a huge disability. Cant expect a father to pay child support to a woman who left him for another man or tricked him into having a child.
[–]cocoPoulet -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Correct me if I'm wrong. I thought if the guy doesn't sign the birth certificate, he has no legal obligations. So I guess, it is fair. If you do sign the certificate, that means you will have to pay for the child even if you're not living with the mother of the child.
[–]actanonverba8 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You're wrong. As soon as the mother names a man, he is on the hook. Even worse, many states have it (or had it until men finally got too angry) unless HE responds to their (the State) "finding" within a certain time period (e.g. 30 days). There have been many cases of women naming men who were not the father (some were men that had never even slept with the woman) because she think he is the most reliable ATM. The man (assuming his notice even got to him) then has to rush to PROVE he is not the father. These and other reasons are why I am in favor of mandatory DNA testing at every childbirth. Women get guaranteed maternity of a newborn; it's only fair that men can be assured of paternity.
[–]cocoPoulet 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
OK. That doesn't look fair at all.
Where I come from (Québec), here is the rule : "the declaration of birth must be signed by the father or the mother or both, and the declaration will be valid only as regards the person or persons who have signed it." (http://www.justice.gouv.qc.ca/english/publications/generale/filiation-a.htm) How I understand it is that a mother cannot force a man to be the father of her child as in your country.
[–]actanonverba8 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not sure about Québec. Hopefully what you said is indeed the case but, in the case of my considering anything concerning men and the judicial system, I take an intentional "once bitten, twice shy approach". I've never personally been put through family court hell, but I've read enough to know how anti-male it is generally in westernized countries.
[–]ClaudeKenni -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is something I talk about a lot. To put it briefly, there is no argument that's pro-choice, besides the issues of rape and serious health risks, that can not then also be applied to men being allowed to sever all rights and responsibilities to a child within the same period that women can legally have the choice to abort a child.
The practicalities of putting something like that in to law are complex (requiring everything from notification of the father within that period, or issues of identifying parenthood in cases of uncertainty, good faith around contraception methods etc), but it's better to be complex and unbiased, than simple and completely favouring the mother in all cases.

In your "abandoning of the marriage" scenario, the man should pay because he is the bad guy. What is a mother throws a father out of the house and divorces him against his will? Should he, as the innocent party, still have to hand over child support every month?
[–]Lecks 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No one is forcing men to stay in a child's life. If they don't want the child and don't want to pay child support than they need to relinquish parental rights. However most men (I know) don't want to do that because they want some involvement in the kids life. You can't have it both ways.
[–]springy 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The system you are proposing is not legal in the USA, otherwise many men would go for it, knowing their wives are going to deprive them of child access anyway.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Wait, what? You can relinquish parental control and not have to pay child support? That's the first I hear about that.
[–]AcerbicUserName -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Depends on the state, but generally, yes. If you relinquish all parental rights you cannot be help liable for child support. This does not mean that a court will allow you to relinquish your rights, in most cases it's that the mother is fighting the decision. Which in that case you would need to deal with the mother as well as a family court to decide. Still sucks but than again so does being pregnant with a child you don't want for 10 months.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]AcerbicUserName 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If a man wants control over his reproduction, he can use a condom. If Little Lord Fauntelroy can't stand a bit of latex, what happens after is his own damn fault.
[–]macgyverftw 11 points12 points13 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If a woman wants control over her reproduction, she can take the pill/other methods. If she doesn't do so, what happens after is her own fault.
Nope, she can still abort. Or not abort and force the father to pay for it while giving him (almost) no share in his kids life.
So either you make women take the same consequences as men, which means no abortion at all (at least without consent of the real father), or you have to give men the same opportunity to opt out like women do when they get an abortion. Where's your sense for equality?
Not to mention that condoms suck(in my opinion) and can break/tear/etc, while the pill pretty much works 100% as long as you take it. That's a great disparity to the expense of men, and the pill for men will probably still take decades to be available.

Couldn't a father emancipate or disown the child? I would think that would legally remove any obligations for the child's welfare. He would lose visitation rights or really any future care for the child.
Or if the mother is shown to be mentally unsound, I'm sure he could arrange for adoption since she is no longer fit to be his or her mother.
Or just be abstinent. Or marry the mother.
[–]silverionmox 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Couldn't a father emancipate or disown the child?
No, he can't. That's the problem.
That's really, really exceptional.

[–]pancakeman157 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Why can't he? Its a legal process that varies state to state but that seems to be the only thing holding it back.
I'm just putting forth possible solutions. Abstinence is obviously a choice the same as having sex. It seems to be that if you feel like you need to carry a gun for defense you have to be prepared that you might kill someone. The same approach follows if you have sex: you have to be prepared that you might give life to someone.
Sure, making that legal process available would solve the part of the issue that can be solved without artificial wombs.
The same approach follows if you have sex: you have to be prepared that you might give life to someone.
That's the exact reasoning people use against abortion. It's not valid then, it's not valid now.

We are, alas, not living in a theoretical world of what things "should" be like. Sure, you can fight for what "should" be, but you have to live in the present with what actually "is" - and that is men being taken advantage of by women and the legal system.

[–]Denisius 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Not at all.
You don't want to have kids at all, or at least at some period in your life? Store sperm in a sperm bank in case you ever change your mind and get a vasectomy.
That way you can be completely certain that you will not one day wake up and get an surprise lifelong financial responsibility that you might not have planned or wanted.
It's not ideal, but it's the best option right now for those who want to be safe.
It necessitates a score of invasive and unnecessary surgical procedures, that alone makes it a bad idea.
But you try to reframe the problem. The problem is not preventing pregnancy, the problem is the imbalance of control in the case of unwanted pregnancy.
[–]Denisius -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So does an abortion.
Either way, until we get a male birth control pill vasectomy is the best way to control unwanted pregnancy for men.
The difference is that an abortion is a fallback measure if it still goes wrong; cutting and freezing would be standard. Not to mention that the equivalent for women would be "sterilize and freeze an ovary", not abortion.
the best way to control unwanted pregnancy for men.
You're still trying to reframe the issue: the issue is the imbalance of rights in case of unwanted pregnancy, not a lack of options to prevent pregnancy.
