I think this is a reductionist view. In most traditional marriages household responsibilities are divided by gender. And men let women fully own responsibilities that they actually do. e.g. arranging a kid's social schedule or budgeting groceries. So there's usually upfront delegation and then autonomy within that responsibility.

There are very few couples that actually practice genuine collaborative marriages. But if you want to see a prominent modern example of this it would be Malcom and Simone Collins. They literally do everything as a deliberate joint collaboration.

In practice most "collaborative marriages" are just dysfunctional passive aggressive contests. Usually one party dominates the other. Except resentment is bred, because unlike a traditional marriage this is not transparently sorted out up front.

Approaching - it's up to the man to take charge

Basically there are a lot of expectations placed on the man to be a leader, and where there is a leader there are generally followers (subservients). In my own experiences, I've noticed that women have naturally expected me to take the lead.

I think authority is more of a natural thing to men, in large part demanded implicitly or explicitly by women; and obedience is more of a natural thing for women. Of course there are healthy relationships where the two of them don't fit these black and white moulds, or reject them outright - I've seen happy, healthy relationships where a boss-babe woman is the authority figure to a submissive, meek guy.

I don't think there are that many men out there vocally demanding obedience, but the ones that do possibly had a religious upbringing or a bad experience where the dominant role was "shared" and possibly fought over; leading to a direct breakdown of the relationship/marriage. Teams break down when people fight over the leadership role, and teams tend to function optimally when a leader is established and their orders are followed by the subservients.

I don't even necessarily think it has to be the woman that obeys, but I think a healthy relationship will need someone to take the dominant (leading) role and someone to take a submissive (following) role; such as the cases with the boss-babe and the submissive beta. When people fight to lead, that's where problems arise; which I suspect would be the biggest issue with a collaboration-style relationships. If the people have a mutual agreement where they trade off leadership responsibilities on a case-by-base basis, that could probably work.

That’s a general misunderstanding. “Demanding” submission isn’t the right thing to do. Submitting is simply giving the lead. Men that want to lead, want a woman that will let them. Not by force, but by choice out of trust.

As to why it’s better, this is purely anecdotal, but every relationship I’ve seen where the woman starts to take charge turns into either this unhealthy, high stress, toxic relationship, or it ends. I don’t know why this is. But the more traditional male lead relationships seem more likely to succeed. Seems like women don’t like having to lead and men don’t like being a doormat. Men also just kind of assume they’re in charge by default, as arrogant as it sounds. But that means we don’t change. That’s just our natural state of being. There’s no time I’ve seen a woman have authority over me that she didn’t feel the need to flex it every so often, which will rub your nerves raw pretty fast.

The drawbacks of collaboration in the same areas, is the constant head butting. Back in the day, those relationships were still highly collaborative, even though the man was in charge. The man worked, provided, and had his place in the home. The woman pretty much had domain over the house and the kids. They’re different sets of responsibilities. When you start to overlap responsibilities because you don’t trust your partner to do their part, that’s when issues arise. There’s more to that, in the case of individuals. But that’s generally how it ideally went.

All this to say, whoever is the “leader” in the relationship should never straight up disrespect their partner, or step on their toes with their roles in the relationship, because that partner trusts you to take care of them and look out for their well being. Just because there’s an established hierarchy in the family, doesn’t mean there isn’t respect.

In the very specific case of a man who does take sole financial responsibility for the family (i.e. is a 100% breadwinner and wants a partner to be a 100% homemaker), it could be argued that since he is the person providing the income he has some degree of proprietary authority.

Also, whilst homemaking absolutely has challenges, and is a full-time job when kids are involved (let's not pretend otherwise... it is a very valuable contribution and a very serious matter), you can fairly argue that it is preferable to being in the labor market (at least depending on the occupation). Women are still "employed" (so to speak) but they have better job security... the household is their "firm."

However, these arguments can only apply in the case of a strictly traditional role-separation (which may in fact be economically optimal depending on whether or not there are increasing returns to either homemaking or breadwinning or both).

I have no interest in living a traditional lifestyle, and the desire for a doormat wife is something I look down upon. That said, from pure economic logic, for some households a super-trad model might actually be the best one.

One thing to acknowledge is that there are religious reasons to believe that the man is the head spiritually of a family. I had this conversation with a friend I really respect for his views on religion (I'm atheist) so I don't think it is necessarily selfish or ill-intentioned when some men say they are the head of the household, and that's that.

There is a way to believe that while also showing respect for your partner, with the understanding that when disagreements arise the man will be the one deciding. The obvious problem is that it is completely based on whether that particular man wants to be selfish or compassionate.

Alright let's address the premise this question is grounded in. Power. The leader follower relationship dynamics is not power based. It comes down to roles, capacity, competence, sacrifice and responsibility. Because even in a "50/50 collaboration" both parties are going to be obedient to each other or contract they agree on. And so, the premise is a gross distortion of the leader follower/ supporter dynamic. But to answer your questions.

1) Biologically speaking, men are built to be leaders. Men have more grey matter, have a higher capacity to perform under physical and mental stress in almost every circumstance. Men are brave and more prone to take risk to get better. Better meaning, finding more resources. Finding more efficient ways to get things down. Men are more logical, but a little lower on empathy. Which allows them to focus an not be distracted when making emotionally and morally difficult decisions. Men are also more prone and ready to take on responsibility of others and the outcomes of their decision. Men are also more prone to dominate. Which under many circumstances is needed for survival. Especially in extreme circumstances.

2) Women are more qualified to be followers in this dynamic, because of their ability to adopt. For example, women are better learners of language. Better at detecting danger. Another reason, is that women are less rigid which allows them to learn quicker and adopt new ideas, ideals and culture. Women are way more socially aware, and so has a better view on the emotional state of a community. Women are better at risk management. Women are better at injecting empathy and consideration in situations that need it. They are the water that temper the flames of men so to speak. Women are better teachers for children up until kids age of 14-15. Women seem are more ok with taking the followers role because they don't like mental, physical and emotional stress and challenges.

3) Obedience is Superior in relationship dynamics, because it established a hierarchy. Which to me is needed. It offers the opportunity for the follower to grow into leadership and develope a more balanced and considerate approach to maintaining the family unit. For example, a good leader will delegate responsibilities. Allowing the follower to grow while not feeling the full burden while performing tasks. This also allows the followers to lean into the leadership roles over time, while given the opportunity improve on where the leader falls short.

4) Draw backs in a "50/50" collaboration mainly stems from ultimate responsibility and slow decision making, or indecision. It also causes issues when it comes to taking responsibility for negative outcomes. Mainly because the burden of performance is always higher between the both parties. In the situation of a man and woman. The women will always expect more from the man. Especially when it comes dangerous situations. Also, the expectations the man puts on himself and the risk taking is not going to be seen in a good light by the woman. A man will risk his life and probably most of his resources to attain a better situation. Most women are not like that. Men are more willing to get into uncomfortable situations aka losing everything and starting over. Women don't like that. So in short, the "50/50 collaboration" fundamentally can't work because men and women are wired differently and approach things differently when it comes to building and maintaining a life. If anything, the traditional dynamic allows for both men and women to balance each other out. Where both parties can learn and grow.

In practice, usually the men and women have full authority on certain aspects of the family. I’m familiar with a lot of trad relationships and this is how it goes.

The husband for example may set the budget, but give the wife full freedom to buy whatever she wants for the furniture or groceries, etc; while the husband has the final say on repairs. For kids the wife might have full authority over the kids education; while the husband has full authority over their extracurricular and game usage.

My wife certainly doesn’t and to be honest she isn’t really good at thinking for the sake of our family. She either over thinks, considers more than is necessary befor a decision is made and often gets overwhelmed. I went on thinking we were to make decisions together for the first 15 years of our relationship. Boy were we miserable. The fights we would have when I would open a conversation with “do you want this or this” or when I genuinely tried to talk about our decisions were ridiculous. I have since started shifting the family dynamic to a more biblical approach as I discovered Redpill and the results are outstanding. Involving her in the decision making process is a complete chore (for both of us) and often a waste of time. Now I simply state what I have decided. She can and will interject and if there is merit I will consider it but typically this not the case. I make decisions for our family quickly and without all the pressure she feels when a decision falls to her. It’s interesting because I never would have thought the strong lady I married would light up when I took her power away from her. To some women it is a complete burden. They want a captain to be responsible. They are still the first mate and can act when the captain is unavailable. I as my wife’s captain will consider her needs in my decision making and expect obedience as I have done the work for us.
