There are often medialised cases where the sentencing doesn't seem to make sense.

In my country we have ridiculously light sentencing for rape and it's often in news as wtf.

I just read this morning that a dude abused and broken 43 bones and caused a brain bleed of his newborn twins.

Dude got 5 years.

A little while ago in Australia, a man kidnapped his ex in his car and raped her. He got bail. Later he broke into her home, destroyed her property and beat her puppy to death. He got bail again. While he was out on bail he - SHOCKINGLY - murdered his ex.

That’s just one of the stories of male violence being ignored and enabled over and over again until a woman ends up dead. Australia has a weak legal system in general but it helps violent men all the time.

Jeffrey Dahmer had a fanclub, so I don't think it's a stretch to say there are freaks out there who celebrate all acts of depravity and if he'dcommitted his crimes in the age of social media you would have noticed them far more. As for her sentance the general public always believe people should serve longer times than they actually do, very few people are satisfied with court rulings for pretty much all crimes that don't result in a life sentance.

A good example is a guy in my local area, he broke into a 64 year old old womans house, pushed her down, cut her phone line in front of her then proceeded to stab her in the head 7 times with a kitchen knife, he was out in a halfway house in 5 years because she didn't die.

Another one happened less than a months ago in the UK, a man threw Acid in a woman's face and has been imprisoned for 8Y 2M which means he'll be out on the street in 4Y 1M, light sentencing is not just for women.

You can find stories like this all over the world for both male and female criminals, I think people need to realise that the reason you find out about stories like this is because it's not the norm, it's not standard so it sparks huge interest, if this was a normal everyday thing then you'd have no idea about it.

In general there is a gender gap in sentencing. But this is a statistical thing. You can't take one case and extrapolate. You need to compare average prison sentence for men and women for similar crimes.

I’m afraid it’s one of many examples where the legal system fails to accommodate the cruelty of the crime and possible implications of it. Gender does affect it, but it affects it in both ways - I think there was a study showing that women get shorter sentences when a judge is a man. There’s less of a gap or no gap when a judge is a woman though.

On the other hand, it isn’t the only example of the legal system being way too soft for no reason. In Russia a teacher who was molesting his students for years got only 5 years. A professor who killed and chopped his student and lover got only 12.5 years. I’m sure people from the US or Australia can come up with more examples for both genders.

I get what you’re saying but the problem with this argument is it relies on identifying what the “true” sentence should have been, which is very difficult. It’s only privilege when someone gets less than what you think they should get, but who are you to determine what they should get. You can go case by case for any person, man, a woman, and find one you disagree with.

This is definitely an injustice, however, these types of unjust sentences are not limited to women. Men, too, can receive a lighter sentence just because the victim didn’t die, despite the fact the intent was clearly murder. This man stabbed his female friend 15 times in the neck, face, and head… and was acquitted of attempted murder and instead charged with “causing grievous bodily harm with intent.”

Note that the case you are talking about took place in Australia, and the one I am mentioning, the UK. Both of these countries tend to have a much more lenient legal system than the US. Sometimes that’s a good thing, but not when it comes to violent crimes like these.

They are NOT “cheering for her” as you describe. What she did is abhorrent and unacceptable.

However the comments they are using, are the same that have been said (many times) about male perpetrators, when women are the victim.

There was a case in Australia where a man killed his estranged wife and 3 children by dousing them in petrol/gas, killing them all, and then unalived himself.

A police detective said to the media among other things… “is it an instance of a husband being driven too far by issues he’s suffered by certain circumstances into committing acts of this form?”

As well as many many more cases of victim blaming - in Australia and overseas.

If you (rightfully) find the comments offensive, jarring and you are here calling them out, my question is do you also do the same when similar comments are made when it is about male perpetrators, and comments question the women victim?

Well actually trans people strangely intersex people from what I hear don't have much change to their rates or are just ignored when making the graphs but trans people oh dear.

They get some hellish treatment given how many people think that someone is saying they are to get lighter sentences.

But at least we can be happy Australia isn't the country that recently had a national case where a women preyed on a nine year old child and the child was the one who faces charges
