I was taught from a young age that all human beings have intrinsic value so using those kinds of terms in the context of whether or not you would date a person doesn't sit right with me. Granted those are your friend's words, not the woman's. If she was in fact rude and short with you just because you're not the kind of man she would date, to me that says more about her than you.

I'll talk to pretty much anyone at a party as long as they're polite, I don't have other pressing places to be, and we haven't hit a natural stopping point where we're clearly running out of things to say. Man, woman, old, young, whatever.

Deciding whether I would date someone is completely different. That's primarily going to be a matter of whether I find him physically attractive and if we're compatible for a relationship. Do we have similar religious and political views? Do we have similar views on children and family? Do we lead similar lifestyles? Similar interests? That sort of thing.

You really need to clarify how the interaction went. Your friend said it was due to low value. But it can be you had a bad interaction with her or she’d rather just talk to her friends and a bunch of other reasons

I almost exclusively hear people talking about "low value" people here, with a smattering of other redpill / manosphere type sources. I'm not saying that no woman uses the terminology - because yo, there are billions of people on this planet, and for almost anything you can imagine you will find some folks doing it - but I've talked to a lot of women from a lot of different backgrounds, and I haven't heard it.

Which is important, because the whole idea of people having some kind of fungible value, that remains consistent in different people's evaluations of them is pretty alien to me. Like... if I think of the majority of men by female friends are married to, I have no interest, and I wouldn't if they were single, either.* But I don't look at them and think "low value men". And when I hear guys going on about "low value women" I internally recoil from the concept. (And think a lot less of the men saying these things, though I remind myself frequently that a lot of you are young and very inexperienced.)

I suppose I could separate out what it takes for me to respect someone from what it takes for me to be interested in them? (And "someone" is pretty apt here - I'm bi, and I'm attracted to similar things in men and women.)

Respect: They need to be smart, and they need to have integrity. Come to think of it, I am not thinking of a case of someone who struck me as not smart but who had integrity, but I'd probably respect them too. Long ago I learned that integrity was the core thing for whether or not someone could really be my friend.

Interested: They need to be substantially more smart. (Evidence suggests I might only really fall for folks who are at least three std dev above the mean, but I wouldn't call it conclusive.) They also need to be creative, though I think the two tend to go together. They need to have integrity. We need to have vaguely compatible values. (There's a fair bit of room for difference, but not "a woman's duty is to breed the next generation of smart offspring" difference.) They need to have their shit together financially. (Doesn't mean they need to have a ton of money, but they can't be a disaster, either.) And need to have their shit together practically - they could have an unusual life, but it needs to be as least somewhat functional for them. And we need to have some level of mutual attraction. I'm fairly flexible when it comes to looks if the other factors are in play (and I'm so done with pretty boys who bore me) but there are intangibles when it comes to attraction.

There's a lot of nitty gritty that comes up if I were thinking of living with someone (I am hesitant to do so). And more if we were having a family, though that seems less likely these days. Maybe if I meet the right woman?

*Only one exception is coming to mind - not that I'd do anything about it. I don't just adore his wife, but they make a really lovely family.

What a woman considers "low value" is very individual. Personally I would not call a person "low value" even if they don't bring value into my life, but I also won't actively seek their company either.

And if you mean specifically in a dating context, it would be a person that is not "your type". Not only based on their looks (but lets be honest it is important that you feel attracted to your partner) but also personality wise.

Personally it doesn't matter how good a guy looks if he is an ass I dont value his company

But a good guy who also looks good is better than a good guy who doesn't

She wasn’t interested. No need to assign “low value” to it. Just say “damn that sucks” and move on like everyone else.

If you really wanted to troubleshoot, maybe figure out why some women don’t find you attractive and understand that why behind who does find you attractive.

When I am at a party, I don't walk away from a man because he's "low value". If I walk away from him, then it's usually because of one of the following:

Social anxiety
I wasn't there to hook up and I suspected that he is.
I didn't realise he wanted an extended conversation.
I was doing or thinking about something else and he interrupted me.
The conversation was boring.

As for the title question: I don't think of "value", but if I think of someone I don't want to date, it's someone who would make my life worse. This could be something like:

Surrounds himself with bad company.
Requires my financial support if I don't have a career that can sustain that (my current career can support me fully, but not another person. I wouldn't mind him needing support if my career paid more).
No future plans or real interests.
Never accomplishes anything. Lots of dreams and no results.
Has a disordered obsession with something, like cares too much about his or my body, drug or alcohol addiction, egotistical, etc.
Allergic to cats. Keep your inferior genetics away from me (joking).
As a kinkster, a guy who can dish it but can't take it (like a Sadist who has never felt the bite of his own whip- not into it, is fine, but you should at least know and respect what I'm experiencing).

It’s partly subjective, but he has little to nothing to offer. Practically useless to continue engaging with because he lacks traditional markers of status.

I think you’re trying to over analyze a ten second interaction, though. She simply did not want to talk to you. That’s it. It’s not within your control.

You have no idea if the woman thought you were “low value.” You are taking your friend’s word for it and he sounds like a jerk.

You said it was a 10 second interaction at a party. Maybe she was thinking about something else or on her way to the bathroom or to take a phone call or needed water. There’s a million reasons she could have walked away without thinking that you were too low value to talk to her.

no passions or hobbies
unable to resolve conflict with maturity, abusive/violent when angry at me
addicted to drugs/unable to be a productive member of society

it’s also worth noting that i personally find it more apt to break things down as low/medium or average/high value

I have never heard a woman speaking about men in those terms, nor have I thought about men in those terms.

In my world, if I’m thinking about a man at all in terms of “romantic potential” (which is definitely not the case unless I’m actively looking for a romantic relationship at that specific moment in time-literally THAT moment.

I am starting with a no/ maybe decision that is specific to “can I imagine wanting to kiss this man at some point, assuming he is a decent person?”. That’s a “maybe” or a “no”. A maybe can become a “yes” if all of the other stars align, more often it becomes a “no”. A “No” will never become a “maybe” or a “yes” romantically but has the remote possibility of being a human friend if all of the non- kissable characteristic stars align. If he’s a “no” and not otherwise a “friend”, he is a neutral acquaintance. Neither good nor bad. Suitable for quasi pleasant casual social interaction but nothing deeper than that.

If a “no” is also unpleasant, he can quickly become a “hell no” which triggers a strategic retreat and avoidance.

From there the investigation of the “maybes” may begin or putter out depending on how he views me.

Nowhere in there is a universal high / low value call made.

So first off, I don’t love the term “low value” in general because it kinda makes it sound like someone doesn’t have value as a person if you don’t want to date them.

To me, I guess “low (relationship) value” would mean “someone whose company I don’t particularly enjoy,” because that’s what I primarily look for in a partner. Of course someone who doesn’t treat you well is automatically “low value” as a partner. But everyone is different on specifics, for example, some are literally talking about monetary value and/or social status. Aka “what can you do for me?”

But in this case, definitely think “I’m not interested” would’ve been far more appropriate.
