A man who calls himself a personal trainer, dancer, writer and motivational speaker has incited the wrath of men and women across the internet by tweeting a list of 12 ways to be a beautiful woman — including “be thin,” “be able to cook,” “shave,” “wear pink” and “listen to men.

Alexander J.A. Cortes has developed a reputation as a misogynist with his frequently scathing and condescending Twitter critiques of women, as well as his guidelines to help other men “vet women” and to help women attract “masculine men.” The 29-year-old has also tweeted, “Remember, only a man can tell a woman how to act.”

How to be a Beautiful Woman

His advice regarding the naysayers is arguably even more harsh than his original tweet, calling women who are angered by his list “harpies that you never want to breed with” and saying they’d be “terrible mothers.”

Is he particularly wrong? Seem to be a pretty standard list of conventional female beauty. Aside from the backlash his clearly troll-y follow up tweets, many women replied with their own lists. Things like

I want to focus on the backlash from women who believe his list is wrong and misogynistic and the inherent problem people, especially on the left, have with giving lifestyle and dating advice for men and women. The way I see it is that you must equate successful dating for men and women with some level of adherence to the male/female gender role. This, of course, will be contradictory to do if you believe that gender roles should be abolished. Advising people to fulfill a gender role has become too taboo. And if you believe gender roles should be abolished, you’re more likely to give useless platitudes like “just be you,” and “know you are beautiful the way you are," despite the fact that such advice is nonsensical. Or maybe I'm wrong and this wouldn't be such a big deal if the advice came from a woman. Lot's of women's magazines give advice on how to attract men by adhering to some level of the female gender role, for instance.
