Oooh I've just been waiting to tell you gals about this one. It's a tldr, but I really want to bring you ladies through this ride with my younger self. TLDR @ bottom.

Many years ago I went on a few dates with a guy that seemed great. Both in our 30s. He pulled out all the stops for dates (even brought me flowers), he was texting a lot, he was passionate about his work, and he had been charismatic & kind so far. He seemed very close to his family, and he talked fondly of women (his role model was his mom). I asked him what led him to OLD, and he said he was having a hard time meeting women his age that were single - he didn't want to date women that he worked with, and he had tried dating younger women who were in their single years but he found them to be immature 🚩 and not as interested in a long-term relationship as he would prefer. There was a big red flag: he was showing me pictures of his decorating efforts and I caught a glimpse of "The Game" displayed a little too prominently on his bookshelf. I pointed it out and he sheepishly told me a friend bought it for him. He thought it was a little silly, but he put it on the bookshelf so that his friend knew he appreciated the thought. Other than that things seemed fine.

He offered to cook me dinner and I accepted. It was probably too early: it was just a few weeks in and I didn't want him to think I was going to sleep with him or anything by coming to his house. I was hesitant, but he completely understood and said there was no pressure and that wasn't his intent at all: he had big family news, and he didn't want to rush things but he could see me being in his life long-term and so he wanted me to be a part of this BIG NEWS! His mom was thrilled and he wanted someone else to share it with... On and on he went. I knew people that worked with him and I had done background checking, so I was comfortable that I was not going to be murdered, raped, or overly pressured. So I agreed.

He served us mushy pasta that he had cooked for maybe 40 minutes topped with sliced hot dogs that were boiled in the pot with the pasta. This was on paper plates 🚩, with toothpicks and plastic forks as utensils 🚩. He admitted the food was bad and he said he had not found any plates he liked yet. Ok, fine. In an attempt to put off trying the food, I asked him about the BIG NEWS. He got this twinkle in his eye and started talking. He didn't know really how to say it, and his mom was so excited and he hoped that I would be ok with it (hmmm 🚩). He took a deep breath, told me that he could see being with me long term... and hesitated... at this point I'm a little terrified by his excitement; if he proposes this is going to get REAL awkward. Ladies, this was the BIG NEWS: he had gotten a 17-year-old at church pregnant, but it was okay because she is 18 now! She's going to keep the baby, but he really wants to be with me and he wants to reassure me in case I worry that he is going to go back to her. "We could raise this child together," but naturally I couldn't meet his mom quite yet because she was excited about being a grandmother and he didn't want to cause a stir. I cannot describe how awkward the pause was after that. I started laughing because he was just sitting there smiling at me with all of this enthusiasm and I did not know what else to do (and I was so happy I wasn't going to have to try that food). Needless to say I left.

TLDR potential HVM is not, admits he got a minor pregnant and excitedly announced that I was to be the mom. Of the baby, of course, because (phew) prego mom had just turned 18 a couple days ago. I mean I have more stories, and this was probably one of the lighter ones. OLD is amusing but it is just not a way to meet someone 😂

The guy whose wife of over twenty years died in the November.

December he created his dating profile.

By January, he was going on dates.

I met him in February for dinner. I thought she must have died some time ago by the way he was talking. I didn’t like him: lots of mansplaining, it felt like a job interview because he (fat and fifty) clearly considered himself a catch.

Then I found her obituary. I pieced it all together. Never spoke to him again. He was like a kid in a candy store.

Men will move right along. They can literally remarry within a year of losing the wife without a backward glance.

Bumble. Me F40 & M49, he had some nice pics with his dog, got chatting & mentioned the dog had died a few years ago. I was then slightly suspicious that the photos were very old so I asked for a FaceTime and he agreed. He was a lot older than the pics he had put up, he was drunk, and clearly had no bottom teeth!!!!!! I was in some shock at this point when he started telling me about his online dating experiences that he had met a woman who had asked him to go back to a hotel where her husband was waiting. I didn’t know how to end the call so I threw my phone across the room, crawled over & unmatched!

He’s got pictures of himself with strippers on his dating profile. I don’t know if he forgot that the app picks random photos from IG or just didn’t care but either way wtf. I literally just laughed and deleted the app, I felt like that was my sign.

OKC. Matched with this guy (don’t remember anything about his profile, I assume it was fine), he was really limp-wristed about chatting (non-committal, one-word answers). I told him we weren’t a good match and I’d be unmatching. He asked me to fill out a CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SURVEY about my experience with him. I skimmed out of curiosity—it was 20 questions long, “what did you enjoy,” “what did I do wrong” etc. I texted him “sending me this survey is what you did wrong.” Then I blocked him.

So many. Think I will start with this guy asking me outright after a match to go for a drive with him and stay in a villa. Uhh Taken much? I said I don't know him well enough, he said let's get to know each other over beer or coffee, I told him I'm accustomed to more appropriate dates and he asked me to plan it, Unmatched him.

I made the mistake of putting no hookups and no smoke up/videogame dates on my profile, because I just got too many offers for it. One scrote swiped right, saying 'In the age where even Spotify doesn't ask for commitment, you're asking for a lot and not giving much, not a great business model.' Unmatch.

Matched with a data scientist, whatever that means - he kept trying to dumb down my job..I have a pretty hard to explain job, and he kept turning it into a CIA fights crime plot (my job has nothing to do with the CIA).. unmatched.

Told another match I think punctuality is a dying art, and he basically told me he's never on time to anything, including dates. I flatly told him if he's late and it's not because of an emergency, I wouldn't be sitting around waiting for him at a date. So he had the audacity to say 'I will be on time when you come over to my apartment'. Unmatch, block.

I had something on my bio as a conversation starter, and one match asked me about that. I said he was one of the first to notice it and he said 'Sometimes I can't believe the standards are this low but it works for me' They KNOW.

It's midnight, I get a call from a match, when he hasn't even sent me an opening text. I cut the call, and send him a single question mark. He asks 'why didn't you pik?' I say 'I wasn't expecting a call outright' and he unmatches me. Thanks scrote, saved me a step.

Last one, we had a good conversation, he asked me out, then texted me late in the night, saying he might want a no strings attached thing and I said no. He said we could be friends and I said no. He again asked me out to a date and I said no. He then tried to change the topic, I didn't answer..then he said that it's getting late and we can talk tomorrow. Pretty sure he just wanted a therapist like friend with the option of sex. I unmatched him as he was typing the next sentence.

I have so many more stories. The standards for OLD in my city are so low, as I am finding out. Who are these pick mes going on coffee dates, smoking up and entertaining these LVMs? But I'm getting pretty good at unmatching at the first sign of LVMness...

A guy kept telling me he's going to venmo me money if I let him live with me and my two young kids.

He kept asking for pictures of all three of us, and kept getting more and more insistent that he come meet me and help me bathe the kids.

It was disgusting, and he was banned within three days.

It's amazing how much of a concerted, long-term effort he was making to essentially bribe me to send him pictures of kids bathing.

I eventually deleted the account.

I can write a book. Here are some of the high (low)-lights: One guy just got married 9 months ago (found out after first date while vetting his identity online). One went berserk and harassed me to Venmo him half the cost of dates #1 and #2 when I refused date #3. One made American Psycho murder jokes on first date. One went on an anti-women rant when I asked him “how do you like this city so far?” as he had recently relocated. Anyway. Cesspool.

This guy, who was a bit older than I was interested in to begin with, supplied me with some specifics of research he had done years ago that matched one of my stated interests (honestly the only reason I even engaged in a short conversation with him). He told me he had lost his wife of 30 years and had four grown children. The research he told me was specific enough to find his name easily. And his wife's obituary. And the fact that she had been deceased for FOUR DAYS.

FOUR DAYS

You guys, they hadn't even had her memorial service yet. The utter disrespect. Not just toward his wife, but toward his children. I'm all for block and delete, but I had to give that guy a lesson first. I felt like I owed it to his late wife to school this disgrace of a man.

Matched with this guy who looked pleasant in his photos and had a nondescript profile. He requested my number after a while and I gave it to him (where I’m from there isn’t really any major safety concerns even with OLD guys).

He called me but I ignored it because I was on a work trip and tired. I told him I couldn’t talk, but could text. He started giving me a lecture on how he’s “not going to hide behind a screen being a keyboard warrior” and that if I’m just going to text, we’re not a good match.

I almost vomited thinking about a phone convo with this scrote, and blocked him.

Oh, I have two. Both from Coffee Meets Bagel.

Back in fall of 2018, went on 4 dates with this guy, the last date being a hangout with all his friends for a Halloween party. Then, for over a month with random texts here and there, he never made another date. I lost interest and he tried to pick up over a month later like nothing happened. He comes back spamming me with texts and trying to make me feel guilty. I block and delete him. My blocked messages is full of texts from him that I never responded to.

The kicker? He got a new number and called me about 3 days ago, in front of my new boyfriend. I told him to piss off and blocked his new number.

The other story was a guy I met and actually became my boyfriend for a year. Turned out to be immature, mama’s boy, emotionally unavailable, p*rnsick, projected his weird bestiality fantasies onto me, and he was talking to other women the whole time.

And too many guys on OLD are just looking for a hookup or a free ride, or are just plain old boring and like all the same things. Very few of them stood out as actually having any semblance of a personality.

There was a thread in r/dating_advice yesterday where a woman said that online dating is hard for women too and the comments were just swamped by men saying women are entitled and that women can still get hookups off OLD and that's all that matters and they only complain because they can't find relationships but hookups obviously matter more and 'poor men - we can't get laid'. It was so depressing to read.

Of course not getting many matches is soo much worse than getting matches and being ignored by them or sexually objectified or meeting someone and getting outright lied to by them for weeks saying they want a relationship and as soon as you do anything physical together they suddenly change their mind and 'it isn't going to workout' or 'i was only looking for something casual'. Which is what has happened with everyone I have met off dating apps, and I don't sleep with men straight away but I learnt men will pretend to be in love with you if it eventually gets them laid.

I’ve had sooo many people use fake photos that were easy to reverse image search. Even fake dicks that weren’t requested with “big Latin cock” search bar not cropped out.

My stories are more sad than funny though. I got a dick pic wherein said dick was crusty at the base. Another and the background was FILTHY. Not like a little mess - stained carpet and trash everywhere. I’ve never requested a dick pic. I’ve gotten dozens.

I did OLD once for a few weeks and ended up physically meeting up with one guy. Lucky for me, after a terrible break up, I had a really awesome female room mate who schooled me on what not to do with OLD. So after vetting first then talking/texting for a couple weeks, I met up with him in daylight, while I was out and about running errands (so uber convenient for me and super non-committal). We brought our lunches and coffee and sat on a bench to talk for an hour before I go on my way.

So I arrive and see...he is extremely good looking. A solid 9 or 10. No joke. Well groomed. Smiles, polite, etc. So we sit and have lunch and get aquainted.

I know I have a warm demeanor...people usually make me feel drained after I meet them because...they just spill everything upon meeting me. Its kinda an inside joke with people who know me. This guy was no exception. He spilled his entire life story. Works at a local BBQ joint after getting fired from his executive job after being drunk on the job. Sex addict. In AA. Girlfriend dumped him. He is unsure if he is bi but he does not have asian fetish. Needs dental work bad. Filed for Bankrupcy. His Mom is the best woman on the planet. Etc.

Basically in everyway I thought he was vetted, I realized he spun all of his reality to appear slightly more appealing whilst technically not lying per say. But it was a terrifying realization for me for sure.

I was sweating. Thinking "holy shit this guy is a perfect ten physically, only 29 and a fucking dumpster fire mess". I know he sensed it because he...attempts to latch on to me at that very moment.

Just creepy, talking about all the stuff we will do together, so many fantasy type sentances come out. He actually started writing down aspects of me and what I like in his little notebook (favorite color, etc). Sociopathic type behavior.

I barely talked during the entire encounter.

I ended up leaving my bag and favorite sweater on the bench to escape. You guys, I lied and said I had to go to the bathroom and willingly parted with my favorite sweater and my lady bag (bag did not have wallet in it but it did have some makeup I missed a lot in it). Yes, I said "I have to use the restroom" and bailed. No fucks there. I was like "GTFO".

Later in the week. He is begging me to let him cook me dinner at his place and so I call him (I know I should have blocked) and I tell him "We are not compatible" and shockingly, he is super nice and level headed and in FULL agreeance with me. And he is weirdly level headed when he says "friendship probably wont work either but I think you are a lovely person and I really enjoyed talking to you and meeting you". So weird.

So. For a moment, my anxiety starts to leave. Am I rid of him?

Not quite lol.

Next morning at 5:15am he texts me a quote his AA group read. Something cheesy and odd, about how trees are like life or something. I am like "da faq" pissed this asshole is waking me up with inspriational texts but then I remember on our park bench lunch, we briefly shared we both like quotes? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I ignore it. Then it happens again. Everyday for the next almost two months, this man texts me at 5:15am a different quote waxing poetic about life and sobriety, etc. I didn't ever respond and didn't block until after a solid forty days because this dude actually helped me sleep better, he was waking me up so damn early I would pass out super early. And, sad to admit, he became a joke to me and my friends at this point.

I hope he is ok? I just checked and he is still blocked, years later and I am married 😂😂

My single OLD experience was kinda terrifying.

My favorite (obviously pre-FDS):

Bumble. He was mid-30s, teacher, working as a receptionist while he was waiting on a position in a school district in our area.

First couple of dates were okay, but it was apparent he was broke as shit. He also had a non-running vehicle so he was always taking the bus or an Uber if he could afford it. I met him at his work a couple times, and he’d always put me on the spot by asking if I’d take him to the store. So I stopped meeting him at his work because I didn’t want me taking him on errands to become a habit.

He was one of those “woke” men, but had a real problem with women disagreeing with him. For example: he didn’t feel criminals such as rapists should be in prison because it just adds to the suffering in the world. Because I vehemently disagreed, he accused me of “listening to respond, not listening to understand.” I said, “No, I understand, I just really disagree.” He also hated that I could go toe-to-toe with him on more “intellectual” matters since I never finished my degree and he was a teacher. 🙄🙄

After about a month of seeing him a couple times a week, I found out he didn’t even have a drivers license due to multiple DUIs (seems to be a trend with men in my area). So I did some digging and found he had an active warrant in the next state over. Also, he had no right calling himself a teacher, or lying about waiting for a teaching position, since he was now ineligible to teach public school (in a lot of states) because of his criminal record.

I confronted him with this info (via text for my own safety). He told me he was in love with me, that I felt like “home” to him, and that he really needed me on his side. He also claimed to know nothing about the warrant.

I told him I wasn’t interested in seeing him anymore and I didn’t feel safe telling him in person so a text would have to do. He replied with epic sagas of paragraphs, telling me what a great and smart guy he was and that I was gas-lighting him (???).

So basically he was an overweight, broke former teacher with a criminal background and active warrant, no license, but with enough of a superiority complex to think he was entitled to a woman who has her shit together. I was amazed at the audacity, the lies, and the narcissism.

Here's one and it made me block guys the moment they come out their ass. I was way younger at the time. Found a guy on OKC, he wanted to video chat to prove I look like my photos. We were talking about something along the lines of Macy's and I didn't agree with something the said about clothes. Can't remember it was a long time ago. However, I do remember him causally calling me a bitch under his breath.

Now I couldn't believe someone had the nerve to say that so I stupidly chalked it up to me hearing things. Since when I asked him to repeat it he said 'i didn't say anything,' well... We went on a 'date' there was nothing planned. We walked in Macy's... We barely had anything in common, he was condescending, he had this whole idea of women being is servant. He barely had shit for himself. He insisted on walking around downtown.... It was 85° outside and humid af.

Needless to say when I got home I blocked his ass and a week later there his is on instagram... Trying to add me... 'hey how you doing?' no. Don't talk to me. Since then if a guy doesn't have a legit actual plan I will not go.

Moral of the story if you think you heard an insult you probably did. Lmao.

This is my most recent OLD story:

After being single for 2 years and being bored as hell with the lockdown, I decided to download Tinder again. I swiped through an endless stream of trashy profiles for about two weeks.

One night I was swiping and saw a profile whose only picture was of a guy kissing a woman's breasts (she was wearing a bra). It seemed like a softporn studio picture, so I guess it wasn't the guy in question. I used to print some of the weirdest profiles to post on Twitter as a joke, so I decided to read the description of this one. The guy went on about how he had a "lactation fetish" and how he wanted a woman to breastfeed him. I took the print, deleted my profile and the app altogether.

I don't plan on going back.

The bf I met on OLD shortly before lockdown starts having some kind of mental breakdown shortly after lockdown begins. I ask him to take me out and he says there are no dates to go on during covid. So I asked him to take me on a picnic. I show up to his house and ask about the food bag, wondering if I can put my jacket in there because it’s sunny but also cold. He tells me that we’re not using a bag, so I should just use my purse. Well my jacket doesn’t fit there so I just leave it behind.

He has me walk to campus with him and he spends the entire walk talking about how he is going to breed his pet snakes and how he was supposed to make a ton of money on bitcoin but for some reason it’s crashing. He lets on that he invested his entire stimulus check in Bitcoin! And he’s angry about it. I told him that that sounds hard and that now he knows it wasn’t a good idea to gamble with his stimulus check. He starts telling me that I have no empathy and continues to cut me down in every way he can possibly think of. He told me I’m not doing a good enough job of comforting him and is then annoyed when my ankle hurts too much to sit in the place he wants me to sit. When he takes out the food, it’s literally a bag of cookies in his pocket that his roommate made. I’m literally allergic to gluten and I can’t eat sugar because it causes flare ups of my disability. He knows these things very well.

I get cold so he tells me to call myself an uber. I want to walk, so I begin to walk to his house so that I can get my jacket and leave. He continues to cut me down on the walk and at one point takes the cookies that I know his roommate put a lot of work into and throws them in front of us. I go to pick them up because I heard the other roommate talking about how he can’t wait to eat one of those cookies. He starts yelling at me that I need to go away and call my uber now. He grabs the cookies before I can get to them and then throws them in the trash. We walk in silence, me as far away from him as I can get, and then he asks me if I want to stay for dinner.

Yeah. That was our last date.

My worst date ever was back in college, in the days before OLD, so it will have to wait for another thread. I have not been on many OLD dates, and the few I have were just meh. One guy actually became a pretty good friend, another asked me out to dinner but then ghosted, but there was this one dude... did the coffee date (pre-FDS), he seems fine. No red flags, but no serious attraction either. He asks me to dinner, my choice. I picked a rather pricey establishment but not out of hand crazy expensive. He gets strep throat & cancels. Rescheduled, but he picked the (much cheaper) place. I arrive, he's there. I struggled with my heavy coat, he just sits there. He orders drinks. I am not much of a drinker, but it's happy hour, sure. He drinks. And drinks. No food appears to be forthcoming & we are seated in the bar, not the restaurant part. I am starving at this point & ask about food. He offers the happy hour appetizer menu. Um, what? We order several. I nosh, he talks. And drinks more. I finally made some excuse to leave, still no actual dinner, dude follows me to my car & kissed me! ACK! NO! Then, after I get home, the texts start. Ugh. Finally let him down easy. Ran into him out one night when I was with a much superior date. He starts texting me again. Still a no, dawg.

Ladies, keep reading if you want to know a positive story. Bad I have plenty, but the good one is just this one viking.

It was on Tinder last year. D seemed like a fun guy to be around, he had pictures from sports activities (not shirtless ab gym pics, but outdoor marathons; I knew I'd talk about that with him, found it impressive when people run outdoors here, since the cold air literally kills my lungs while breathing normally, can't imagine what it'd be like running), from hiking outdoors, and some in a dress shirt and suit.

We matched and he messaged me in English (that rarely happened, I am in a Nordic country but don't speak the language, most matches assumed I did) and we got to talking quickly. He asked a lot of questions, I also had a lot for him. We found out we have something in common (both lost 20kg) and talked about the stigma of being chubby and how much better we felt after doing this for ourselves.

He asked about my home country, I asked about the town he lived in. I didn't like the idea of kids back then and asked him how he wasn't going crazy voluntarily working with such little monsters. He did say he likes kids and his job, but sometimes they sense he's not the top authority and pull crap they get away with. (He was 25 and incredibly sweet and non-aggressive at all)

We had great banter, he clearly put effort in our convo, he messaged me throughout the day when his job allowed and not just in the evenings. After a few days, he asked if I felt like keeping to get to know wach other in person over lunch or dinner.

My favorite thing about him (and guys from his nationality) is how strict they are about consent. He asked me point blank "Can I kiss you?", in the moment I thought it was ruining the mood but he showed me how important it is. Since him, I expect and take nothing else from guys in that department. Also, bonus points, great kisser, really nice body, looked equally good and well-dressed in joggers, in jeans/sweater and in formal attire. Contagious laughter, beautiful smile and teeth, nice cologne, clean shaven face, pleasant voice, great English.

He made it very clear he was looking for something serious. Paid me compliments not just based on my looks, but also my personality. Made effort in asking me for next dates. The only reason I am not with him is at the same time I also met my now boyfriend and ended up falling for him.
