Mankind comes from the Old English mancynn which was in use before "man" was gendered. Back then people were "wereman" (male) and "wifman" (female). Man was 100% nongendered and the word mankind reflects that. I had some girl in a class try to claim this silly shit where "mankind" was somehow ignoring females and it hurt my head then, too.

Man is the base unit. A policeman polices the population. A fireman puts out fires. A businessman runs a business. A chairman chairs the meeting. A woman - well, it's derived from old Germanic for "wife-man", a man who is a wife. Women are men, it's there in the damn word.

Man, the base, disposable unit, has no function; man earns status by assuming a particular function for the group. Typically, a female's biology meant she automatically had a particular function - annoying for those women in more modern, technologically comfortable societies who don't want to be forced into that limited role (and such women always had/have my sympathy) but quite a relief and a privilege for most women throughout history who were thus assured of some worth and support, and didn't have to earn it.

Really, in the modern age the very practice of referring to female men as "women" should be retired. It's also why titles like "spokeswoman" or "chairwoman" annoy me. If her current designated function - the conceptual/culturally position she's holding - is not that of child-rearer/home-maker (and it's not, her current role of primary significance is speaking on others' behalf or chairing the event) then she is a spokesman or a chairman. She's not a woman at all, yet alone a "chairwoman", which would be like claiming the title "policefirebusinessman".

Feminists want to retain "woman" because, once again, they know that traditional female status grants power, grants a right to provision and protection superior to that of one who does not hold that conceptual space. If you want to push for sexual equality through quibbles over language, do away with "woman" altogether and embrace the label of "man".

I used the term "Man" as an abbreviation for mankind when I was in my 2nd grade class. My teacher surprised me when she said "Oh, so only for men?"

I was 7. I was so shocked I didn't remember the word mankind in the middle of her accusation.

That's my alma mater and I'm disappointed, but women studies at NCSU is a complete joke. NCSU is primarily an engineering and agriculture university. The best thing to do in these women studies classes is to encourage the students to drop them in favor of something more useful... Though I had to sit through a bunch of useless required courses as well.

In Finnish there isn't different pronouns for women and men (like he and she). I mention this because it's a mystery to me what it feels like to grown up speaking a language that always makes this difference.

In Sweden some people are following the same principle by replacing han and hon by hen. Människor seem to think it's fundamental part of the language, so it seems to be catching on slowly.

"Människa" means human being and interestingly it's feminine. So Swedes say: early Man and her tools (in Swedish).
