I've had past dating experiences with several men who said things to me about the amount of food I ate during meals. (For extra context, I eat a healthy amount for someone who is above average height and lives an active lifestyle, weight/HIIT training 5+ days a week. I'm well aware of my nutritional requirements.) Two examples of such comments, which were both very serious in their delivieries:

  1. "Whoa, you don't need all of that." while I was about to finish the second half of my sandwich.

  2. "Well no duh you liked the food, you ate -all- of it (emphasis on the all), and these are pretty big portions." after I made a simple comment that the new restaraunt we went to and their food were good.

After years of struggling to have a positive self image, I now have a healthy relationship with my body and food, but comments like this still sting and pinch a little nerve of insecurity with me. (See: a global pressure that begins to be instilled during early childhood that women are meant to devote our entire lives and bodies to men and if we don't we'll never receive love). It hit me recently that the sting I felt after the above comments were said to me is probably the reason why men say these kinds of things to us in the first place; by putting women down through hitting insecurities we're likely to have, ESPECIALLY when it comes to food/weight/beauty, they're actually trying to shift our mindset to the belief that we should feel lucky to be with them.

For example, "If I get her to think she eats horribly or is fat or [insert any potential insecurity here], she won't feel like she has a chance with other men because she'll think they would judge/reject her for it. She'll feel lucky that I'm even giving her the time of day." And y'all? THAT.👏SHIT.👏AIN'T.👏TRUE.👏 Just a manipulative power play, this type of man is lucky that you're even breathing in his general vicinity of his sorry ass.

Since I've had more than one man who has tried to shame me for literally being a healthy human and eating a goddamn plate of food, I'll bet that some of you have had similar experiences with at least one man in your life. 🌟Please remember that men who talk to or about you and your eating habits in a negative way with the intention of making you feel bad DO NOT belong in your life. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO EAT!🌟

tl;dr: I want to remind you queens that no matter where you're at in your relationship with your body, you are allowed to eat however and whatever the fuck you want. Live for you and your beautiful self only. If someone you're dating makes you feel bad about that, they're probably toxic as fuck, so let 'em fly free.
