I really don't think a child should be able to make these decisions even with parental consent. If you're over 18, sure. 11 years old? No way

[–]whateverisfree 111 points112 points113 points 10 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

I agree. The idea of who I was that I had at 11 wasn't even semi-realistic.

[–]MasterBassion 74 points75 points76 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Pretty sure at that age I still thought I was Batman.

[–]DemiDualism 24 points25 points26 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

There was a Walmart commercial playing with three kids each saying they are Batman on as I read your comment.

Trippy

[–]MasterBassion 17 points18 points19 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No. I am Batman.

[–]theruneman 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If two men say they're Batman, one of them must be wrong.

[–]cyphercode 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No one can be him. But someone can represent what he stood for. The ideals that made Batman-- justice, consequence and ironclad resolve to protect. And there is none other that has the wherewithal to uphold those ideals than you... Richard Grayson.

[–]BullyJack 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Azrael too.
Sorta.

[–]FreeBroccoli 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Were any of them wearing hockey pants?

[–]DefinitelynotGRRM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Love that line in TDK.

[–]whateverisfree 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think mine was McGyver. Turns out I was not handy what so ever. I also remember doing Spiderman jumps damn near killing myself.

[–]Shanguerrilla 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Haha! MacGyver was mine too! I used to yell out' I'm MacGyver! When my friends were calling out superman, batman, spiderman, terminator, etc.. I got a couple other 5-7 year olds into the show though. I rewatched all the seasons about a decade ago in my 20's, I still don't regret my choice there, but I'm glad I didn't get a mullet haircut surgically grafted to my head like Joe Dirt at the time!

[–]by_myself 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

At that age I was spiderman.

Is it just me, or were most cartoons awesome back in the late 80s and early 90s.

[–]MasterBassion 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely there was a ton of awesome as fuck cartoons in that era.

Http://www.kisscartoon.me has pretty much every cartoon ever. I highly recommend Cadillacs and Dinosaurs for an epic 90's cartoon.

[–]chokingonlego 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

My favorite has to be classic Transformers.

[–]MasterBassion 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

G1 or G2?

Optimus > Rodimus, but G2 story arc were more interesting.

[–]chokingonlego 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

G1, it's pretty nostalgic.

[–]MasterBassion 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. Much childhood love there.

[–]geminia999 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They are actually both G1, just seasons 1 and 2 being optimus as the leader, and season 3 being rodimus. G2 was basically repaints of toys and some new stuff after the first series finished airing, G2 didn't have any real media attached to it.

[–]Why_You_Mad_ 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Having parents is a dead giveaway that you aren't Batman.

Alternate time line Batman.

If I had the choice I would have started taking steroids and HGH to become a professional athlete.

[–]asdrojas 38 points39 points40 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

As I understand the decision to change sex would be made by the child at age 18, before that only the puberty would be delayed and then he could chose stay male or become a girl. If he decide to become male he would take male hormone and a few years later nobody notice that he had puberty at 18. The problem is that if he choose to change sex and the puberty wasn't delayed then he would have forever a male looking body and no mather what threatment he would be a ugly woman and that may cause some serius psycological issues. In that case I think that is reasonable to led the male kids delay the puberty if they really want so.

[–]chokingonlego 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

But there aren't any known long term risks for hormone blockers. It's gambling cancer, any number of diseases and health risks, and the possibility of permanently stunting physical growth, puberty, and the development of primary and secondary sexual characteristics.

[–]Jokkerb 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I wonder what the psyche looks like after delaying puberty for a number of years. The changes in identity and thought processes are just as significant as the physical changes during puberty, I wonder what that experience is like.

[–]Moldy_Gecko 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would think the torment of Jr. High and HS without puberty would be huge. I mean, you are around a bunch of mature teens while you still act like a little kid.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Terrifying doing these kinds of experiments on innocent children.

[–]Jokkerb 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, this whole idea makes a mockery of informed consent. I realize that medical professionals are and have been involved but they can be shopped for, and it's hard to look at this and not see an agenda being pushed.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Any "professional" that agrees to help push this agenda got their degree from a crackerjack box. That poor kid. :(

[–]16sapphireguys 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just to maybe help satisfy your curiosity, I think a lot of female pro and semi-pro gymnasts don't start puberty until well into their teens. There are various physiological reasons for this, such as very very low body fat percentage etc.

I don't think anyone can say that with any authority, puberty is a tailor made maturation for the body and the mind. How can you declare a gender misidentity without finishing the process of becoming the gender in the first place.

[–]lyraseven 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, it can be said with authority. The many, many trans people who've known all their lives what gender they are can tell you that they knew before puberty, myself included, and that going through the wrong puberty ruins lives. I started HRT partway into a very delayed puberty and I suffer from physical deformities introduced by the wrong puberty. You have no right to inflict that upon a child.

[–]splodgenessabounds 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

there aren't any known long term risks for hormone blockers

Key word: "known"

How many longitudinal studies (plus replicates) have been done? What side-effects were noted? What timeframes? etc. etc.

[–]Igloo32 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

An adoption agency posted an article in the local paper saying the 11 year old white girl would "do best" in a household with 2 African American committed lesbians as that is something she has expressed. I kid you not. Didn't know 11 yr. Olds called the shots.

[–]AbsoluteZeroK 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For sure. However if the child wants to be a girl, then (s)he shouldn't be stopped from living that way (like living, probably no chemicals). But there should also be consultations with a professional, who knows how to deal with these cases. That way there the child get's the proper care, and the correct course of action is taken.

[–]Moldy_Gecko 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. They most definitely need to go to an impartial psychiatrist imo.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

This child isn't making any kind of decision whatsoever, it is just following the abusive brainwashing of his guardians,

who are obviously more interested in their political motivations than his actual health and happiness.

[permanently deleted]

[–]Terminal-Psychosis -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Obviously they don't care much about the kid. They have their own political and monetary motivation.

Also, a doc willing to do this to a child can't have much of a reputation to begin with.

[–]lyraseven 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

So prejudice then.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

I'd say there are very strong prejudices at work here, of the guardians of the child, and doctors that are giving them their way.

Prejudices so strong, they outweigh the very health and happiness of the boy they are charged with watching over.

[–]lyraseven 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, that's not how it works. Your intellectual betters, who spend their careers working out what's best in these circumstances, are on top of this. Don't worry about it.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

"Betters"... riiiiigghhttt... scam artists and quacks.

Not to mention sociopath parental units.

[–]lyraseven 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

So, again, prejudice; professionals whose conclusions make you feel icky are quacks? That's prejudice.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

There are no professionals involved here.

[–]SilencingNarrative -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is really not enough information in that article to conclude that the parents are brainwashing their child into this.

It could be a case of gender disphoria, in which case, delaying puberty is the right thing to do.

Most of the commenters in this thread are jumping to conclusions because it fits the narrative of out of control anti-male gender theorists running amok.

I do think that society has lots of anti-male forces at work but we don't know that that's what's going on here.

[–]lyraseven 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Having been through transition myself I can tell you that it is not an on demand service and certainly not accessible to crazy parents who're pushing their child into something. The process of transition, the WPATH-SOC psychologists who treat transsexuals subscribe to, is designed specifically to prevent people who don't need to transition from doing something permanent. We can be absolutely certain that this is the right thing for the child if the doctors involved are signing off on it.

[–]nullhypo 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not legal for kids to even get tattoos.

[–]ACoderGirl 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually, you can get tattoos as a minor with parental permission. It depends on the state. See here. Some states do not have a minimum age. In my country of Canada, it's up to even more local law, but many places have no law on this or simply require parental permission.

Usually the tattoo artist uses their judgement.

What is this?

[–]ACoderGirl 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You mean a doctor that follows the WPATH guidelines, which are the most well known and widely accepted guidelines for how to treat trans people? Or the Endocrine Society's guidelines, which is the leading organization for the very field that specializes in all things hormones?

What medical guidelines (not just your personal beliefs) are you expecting doctors to follow for the case in question? It seems to me you're simply upset because your personal belief conflicts with medical consensus.

[–]Moldy_Gecko 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Pretty much. If I was a doctor, I'd find it highly unethical.

[–]16sapphireguys 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I understand your concerns in this regard. Especially owing to the context, it does seem like this could be the result of ideological parenting.

However, given that gender-dysphoria is a real condition that people experience, surely you agree that there's an argument for diagnosis, and potentially treatment, as early as possible? If a child/adoloscent/young adult suffered any other psychological or neurological condition, such a depression, anxiety, a personality disorder etc. then we'd probably all agree that it would be best to diagnose and treat that as early as possible. Why wouldn't it be the same with gender dysphoria, assuming that it develops at such a young age?

Also, as someone who worked as a teacher, I have to say that the differences between most boys and girls is apparent even from early years, and the difference becomes more pronounced as they go through puberty. If there are differences between the brains of boys vs girls at that age, then one might allow for the possibility that there are differences between the brains of trans vs. non-trans people, no?

Beyond that, many of us develop a sense of self throughout our teens. We grow from boys into men during this time. It might be valuable for trans people to be socialised in their desired gender during this time, in order to develop a stronger sense of sense. I don't know if that would be beneficial, but I certainly think there's an argument for it.

[+]Aarondhp24 -27 points-26 points-25 points 10 years ago (82 children) | Copy Link

That would be too late though. I don't typically like to argue about this topic because I don't know enough about the topic. One thing I am certain of, is the longer you wait, the more difficult the transition is.

[–]PoundnColons 31 points32 points33 points 10 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

I understand it's "too late", however the child's brain is not fully developed. Therefore it's safe to think their gender identity is not fully developed. Which means making life changing decisions like this could be very inaccurate. We have to think of these things pragmatically not on emotion. While it's "too late" plenty of adults transition. Let them behave and dress as they please while young and transition later in life. We simply have no idea if the child's brain is developed enough to make an accurate judgement on gender identity they will maintain throughout adulthood. Mostly because we understand so little about all of this.

EDIT: please don't downvote Aarondhp24 simply for posing an argument you disagree with. They are not being rude, hateful, or inflammatory.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Therefore it's safe to think their gender identity is not fully developed.

Uh no. That's not how it works.

[–]PoundnColons 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You'll have to provide sources that can prove how it works then and that development and puberty do not continue to affect this. Because that's the crux of the matter here.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Leaving that to the doctors, psychologists, and surgeons.

[–]PoundnColons 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Do you not understand what a source is?

You just claimed "that's not how it works" therefore you must have a source of collective research and findings from doctors, psychologists, and surgeons, that granted you this knowledge no? Seeing as we collectively know so little about it I very much doubt you know "that's not how it works"; if it truly doesn't then great but I need the scientific community backing that claim not a random person on the internet.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You're right I don't know. I'm trusting the doctors and surgeons who would be performing these procedures to act in the best interest of the child.

You're talking out your ass.

[–]PoundnColons 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You're trusting some, not a collective. Where are the studies these doctors use to base their opinion that delaying puberty doesn't cause any long term effects? Where are the studies showing that gender identity solidifies in a prepubescent brain?

Individuals professionals, and many at that, have made all kinds of stupid decisions throughout history based off what they think based on their limited knowledge. That's what we're seeing right now. We won't have actual answer for decades after this has been properly studied. That's the difference here, and between you and I. You're willing to sacrifice children for political/social appeasement while I'd prefer to get sound and correct science before we allow such experiments on children.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Where are the studies these doctors use to base their opinion that delaying puberty doesn't cause any long term effects? Where are the studies showing that gender identity solidifies in a prepubescent brain?

Are you hearing yourself? There is no one in the world you would listen to. And its laughable you're asking about the studies (that don't yet exist) when this boy would be a case study. You want proof, but you don't want anyone to take the first step into the (according to you) unknown.

I'm done arguing with you. If you actually cared about being ubiased about this, you would have already done your own research on this. But you haven't. You're reacting emotionally to a news article, using assumptions and prejudice to dictate your opinions.

[+]riskable -17 points-16 points-15 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

If boys had to wait until their brain was fully developed to make such decisions it wouldn't happen until they were age 25 or so... That's the point where the male brain completes development:

http://mentalhealthdaily.com/2015/02/18/at-what-age-is-the-brain-fully-developed/

Also, part of how the brain develops is determined by sex hormones. So if you want the brain to develop more like a typical female brain you'd better start those hormone treatments before it is fully developed.

I'm not making an argument for or against what is discussed in the article... Just saying that the whole "wait until brain is fully developed" argument is fundamentally flawed.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 28 points29 points30 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So if you want the brain to develop more like a typical female brain you'd better start those hormone treatments before it is fully developed.

That basically undermines the idea that they know who they are before treatment. Not the best argument.

[–]riskable 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not really. Different parts of the brain develop at different times.

Gender identity has been shown to be detectable in very young children. As in, researchers did a study to try to figure out which kids were going to have gender identity issues at very early ages and after those kids grew up it turned out they were right most of the time. I googled for the study but couldn't find it (my Google-fu for academic papers is weak, sorry).

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Without knowing the metrics for gender identity or the methodology for measuring it, I'm not comfortable believing it implicitly, especially since it goes against my own understanding of what has been researched(not that I'm denying the possibility altogether).

And yes my point still stands not because I'm claiming they don't know who they are before treatment, but that the particular argument I quoted is actually argument against the idea that they do.

You're making an awful big assumption here: That a fully-developed mail brain would somehow negate gender disphoria. Evidence suggests that it doesn't. Because the gender disphoria doesn't (necessarily) stem from the parts of the brain that develop later in life.

What you can get instead is amplified gender disphoria where the individual feels even less like their body represents who they are. Which is probably why suicide rates are so high among transgendered people.

[–]dork_souls 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're making an awful big assumption here: That a fully-developed mail brain would somehow negate gender disphoria.

No they're refuting the biological argument that you presented.

You said that a brain will fully develop at around age 25. You also said that "part of how the brain develops is determined by sex hormones. So if you want the brain to develop more like a typical female brain you'd better start those hormone treatments before it is fully developed."

What you have basically told us is that gender identity is tied to sex hormones, which are in turn tied to birth sex. If someone says they are transgender but are below the age of 25, obviously by your reasoning they haven't fully developed their gender identity and should be left to do so before assuming it is wrong.

Evidence suggests that it doesn't.

Which evidence?

Which is probably why suicide rates are so high among transgendered people.

Maybe. It could also be tied to the lack of self-identity, the lack of structure, the intense focus on gender, treatment of trans people, misunderstanding or misinterpreting mental illnesses, unrelated mental illnesses, or a lot of other things.

My point is that extrapolating your own assertions into something like this is not a good way to form a convincing point

[–]Logical_Psycho 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Also, part of how the brain develops is determined by sex hormones. So if you want the brain to develop more like a typical female brain you'd better start those hormone treatments before it is fully developed.

But isn't the argument that the already have a "female" brain? It is my understanding that that is why they want to change physically.

[–]PoundnColons 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes and it would then make sense that their body's natural male development may "correct" this. It also may not. If not they can then be fully equipped with the required knowledge as an adult to make their own decisions.

[–]PoundnColons 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm aware of the general age designation. My point is that disrupting natural development is likely not the correct choice. We don't fully understand development especially when it comes to gender identity. Prepubescent gender identity may not be something we should be making decisions on especially since so much more physical and mental development occurs after puberty. Why would we interrupt their natural course of development just because of their undeveloped prepubescent brains idea of gender identity?

The argument is not fundamentally flawed. How can prepubescent gender identity be known to be accurate? It can't. If we want to claim that being transgender is naturally occurring we should be able to let natural development occur in order to make sure natural development finishes to occur before they make a decision on gender identity. I'm not saying gender identity is a decision mind you, transitioning is the decision I'm talking about. They can't know their identity if their brain hasn't developed. People change greatly in many facets throughout development.

Says who? It's a major decision yes, but you're banking on the kid being wrong about it. What-if's aren't of any concern to me. What is matters. This child says he wants to be a she. His parents support him in that.

This thread is filled with paranoia, claims of child abuse, and remarking on this boys inability to make decisions for himself.

Stop it. If he grows up to regret it, that's something he'll have to cope with then. Putting it off for 7 years just so everyone can say he's absolutely sure, only serves to assuage their own fears about sex change. Forcing a child to go through highschool "in the wrong body" is a cruelty unto itself.

This isn't a right or wrong issue. It's an 11 year old making a decision, consulting with doctors and surgeons (who are obviously ok with performing the procedures), and with his parents support.

I see a lot of people who are unqualified remarking on this. This is new territory for all of us. Lets take our preconceived notions of right/wrong and stow them.

I dont recall weighing in on that argument. I'm only answering your question about why it could be undesirable to wait until you're an "adult" to make a transition from male to female.

[–]Alabastercrab 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't have surgery until you're an adult. You'd take hormone blockers and estrogen/testosterone depending on your gender

[–]JebberJabber 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hormone blockers are not irreversible. They are not transitioning, they are putting off the decision.
Yes there are risks, which the medical community assessed when writing the WPATH guidelines. It is a difficult compromise, you don't get something for nothing. Being 18 and in the wrong body is not a joke either.

How old were you when you were first certain of your gender? Did you ever doubt it, even just a little bit? Not even once?

It is very unusual for a woman to have the body of a normal 18 year old boy. It isn't a matter of not being beautiful.
How well would you cope with having a normal body of the opposite sex? If that was how you grew up, how would you feel about your parents preventing you from blocking your hormones, and watching your body develop irreversible characteristics of the sex you didn't identify with?

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

This poor kid is so obviously completely brainwashed by his "parents" and their political motivations, the chances they would choose this EXTREME body modification for themselves is infinitesimal.

The chances that they have been led into this by their gardian's political motivations is 99.9%

[–]Schadrach 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

By "extreme body modification" you mean delaying puberty, right? Because nobody is modifying anyone's genitals that isn't 18+.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, they are. Drug modification counts too. They are extremely modifying the chemical balance in this boy's body.

Nobody knows what long-term damage that will do. He's going to grow up and almost certainly stop "wanting to be a girl" once he gets away from the destructive influence of his guardians.

He'll have to live with the consequences of their experimentation for the rest of his life. Hopefully it won't be too bad. :(

Probably very slim as the parents are not IIRC "gung-ho radfem lesbians". They have two other sons who are both (or were, the story is from 2011) happily cis and happily straight.

EXTREMELY tiny chance of that.

Much, much more realistic is that they are brainwashing their son for political and social gain. Pure evil, even if they have fooled themselves into believing it is in his best interest.

[–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

So you are alleging that EVERY doctor, psychologist, endocrinologist, social worker, in fact every child welfare professional this family has met has been colluding in child abuse?

Child welfare professionals in California are required by law to report suspected abuse. There has been no such report, or there would be something in the news and the fact is that the only stories on this family come from 2011 and none mention reports or allegations of abuse, except from rage-bait hacks like the one OP linked to.

This was in the national news. Other doctors would have seen it and intervened and they did not.

Are you seriously alleging that there is some vast conspiracy acting against this kid, forcing him to undergo puberty blockers in order to convince him to undergo SRS when he's an adult?

To hold to your assertion "that they are brainwashing their son for political and social gain" which, by the way, you have not supported with any sort of evidence you have to allege conspiracy unless you can suggest some other way a pair of 'misandrist radFem dykes' could force a child to undergo SRS.

OR you could, alternatively, consider that the kid actually IS trans.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Crazy that they might promote openness about such things.

I feel like any other child in any other household wouldn't even speak up about it.

We can't know, so don't suggest it. Neither case is more likely.

[–]Terminal-Psychosis 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

"any" other child, "any" other household.

You speak as if this is even 1 in 100 chance. A true case is extremely, extremely rare, so yah, it's hardly worth suggesting.

When you taking the entire story into account, it becomes an extremely, extremely unlikely one.

There is nothing wrong with pointing out, and accepting the fact that, it is extremely likely this is nothing other than a case of child abuse. The magnitude of the invasion onto this child's body is enormous.

MUCH better to err on the side of caution here. If this growing young boy truly wants to undergo this traumatic body modification experiment, he has time to decide.

It is most definitely a choice that needs to be made in complete safety from any and all chances of pressure, influence and /or punishment from his eherm, "guardians". A good deal of time away from them, and a few years of maturity are desperately called for here.

The extremely high probability, that if he is allowed to freely choose out from under their influence, this "issue" would disappear, simply cannot be ignored. He must be given a chance to truly consent...

no! not just "consent", not just going along with it, that's what's happening now... but, on his own, actually NEED a sex change. This is entirely too huge a matter to leave up to these women that are all too happy to encourage an "alternative lifestyle". :(

This tender young child is too completely under the influence of non-impartial parties with their own agenda. To force this irreversible mod on him is inexcusable. Absolutely child abuse.

[–]Reddit1990 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You do realize the alternative is letting an immature child decide, right? [+]ACoderGirl -13 points-12 points-11 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Your argument does not make sense. The (poorly written and heavily biased) article contains only one quote from the child, an "I am a girl" at age 3. That's it. I don't see how you conclude that this means the kid has been brainwashed. The article gives absolutely nothing to give the impression of brainwashing. You're extrapolating from nothing.

Is it possible for someone to have been brainwashed in a situation like this? Absolutely. But the article gives far too little information to say if that is the case. It's perfectly possible from what information is given that the parents did everything right (as in, no brainwashing and following established medical guidelines for trans people -- not what guidelines you want to see).

[–]Revoran 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Transpeople are only a tiny percentage of the population. It seems extremely unlikely that this is a natural case of transgenderism.

But even if it is, 11 is far too young to be going on hormone therapy and prepping for surgery. 14ish at the very youngest. Genital reassignment surgery on a 11 year old is child abuse on par with FGM.

Agreed that the articles are both super biased (both this one and the mail one it's based on), so we can't be sure about what's going on here.

[–]ACoderGirl -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Transpeople are only a tiny percentage of the population. It seems extremely unlikely that this is a natural case of transgenderism.

It's extremely unlikely for any particular individual to be trans, yes, but why does that make it unlikely that there must be cases of transgenderism? Using the most commonly cited number of 0.3% of the population being trans, that means that nearly a million trans people exist in the US alone. This isn't like winning the lottery. They're not that rare.

Using the US birth rate of just over 12,000 births per day, that means 36 trans people are born every day. And yet you think one article can't conceivably be "a natural case of transgenderism"? I don't understand that logic. I mean, it's far, far, far rarer to win the lottery, but do you assume every article about a lottery winner is "not a natural case of winning the lottery"?

But even if it is, 11 is far too young to be going on hormone therapy and prepping for surgery. 14ish at the very youngest. Genital reassignment surgery on a 11 year old is child abuse on par with FGM.

They're not prepping for surgery! The source article lies. I think such articles should be banned from the sub. If you wanna post things that further your agenda, whatever, but at least be truthful about it. Such misleading articles are just dangerous. She's also not on hormone replacement therapy. You don't usually start that till 16. All they do before that is delay puberty via puberty blockers, which is the safest approach and one endorsed by the Endocrine Society for specifically this case. If it all turns out to just be a phase, you go off the blockers and have a delayed, but otherwise normal puberty. If the kid turns out to be trans, then they eventually get on HRT and have hence avoided the countless issues that come from going through natural puberty.

SRS itself is not done on minors.

[–]rtechie1 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

All they do before that is delay puberty via puberty blockers, which is the safest approach

Clearly doing nothing, i.e. no blocking therapy, is the medically safest approach. That has to be weighed against suicide risk, but it's not clear that this approach would actually make transperson less prone to suicide. There's a strong argument for body acceptance.

[–]ACoderGirl 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not the safest if the kid is trans. Gender dysphoria can be extremely potent. We're talking severe depression up to the point of suicidal thoughts. Puberty blockers do a lot of good to alleviate that (although it's really just a placeholder for HRT).

I mean, anti-depressants have a lot of side effects too, but nobody is proposing we don't treat depressed people with them. Even more applicable to conditions like borderline personality disorder, which has no direct treatment, but rather its various effects (depression, impulsivity, anxiety, etc) can be treated with medication.

And we REALLY should not underplay depression. It's a horrible illness that is extremely crippling and difficult to treat. Body acceptance only goes so far. It's like telling a depressed person to just be happy.

Besides, who's gonna accept someone who claims to be a girl, but is gaining male features (eg, facial hair and a deep voice)? A huge source of issues for trans people comes from the way they're treated by others, which is usually quite negative. Blockers and HRT and all goes a long way not only for helping the person directly, but also by changing how other people view them (and if you avoid the effects of puberty, passing is considerably more likely -- think of how many non-passing trans women have traits that come solely from male puberty).

[–]rtechie1 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Puberty blockers do a lot of good to alleviate that (although it's really just a placeholder for HRT).

If the person is never going to pass, HRT and GRS may not be the best strategy.

I mean, anti-depressants have a lot of side effects too, but nobody is proposing we don't treat depressed people with them.

I think they're wildly overprescribed. I've had severe depression. I didn't take drugs, I made lifestyle changes.

Body acceptance only goes so far.

Sometimes it's the best strategy. We don't treat anorexia with liposuction.

My biggest problem with this is they are preparing the child to have his genitals removed. This to me is beyond barbaric. They are essentially ensuring this kid will never get to experience an orgasm. It's utterly terrifying. I'm all for trans people, but removing genitals is where I draw the line. It's insanity in my view. Why would you want to deprive someone one of the greatest joys in life before they even get to experience it? Not to mention a study from Sweden notes suicide rates are higher for post-op mtf transgender individuals. It's horrific doctors condone this; are they all sociopaths? If only our society didn't put so much emphasis on genitals. Let them be women, who cares if they have a penis? Oh, the women next to them in the public washroom? Fuck this world.

[–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

My biggest problem with this is they are preparing the child to have his genitals removed.

No they are not. They are delaying puberty until the kid is old enough to choose either way and if the kid decides not to transition then the blockers stop and mule puberty kicks in, just a bit later than usual. If the kid does decide to continue, then they won't have to go through surgery to remove facial hair, extra bone around the jaw (and other typical masculine development), and shaving the larynx.

but removing genitals is where I draw the line

Good for you. In that case, I would recommend never removing yours. But you don't get to speak for other people and how they deal with their 'bits'.

Suicide rates are higher for trans people, period. Anything that helps save lives is a good thing, and trans kids who receive parental support ARE at lower risk for suicide.

Sorry that it upsets YOUR genitals, but if the cost of keeping your jimmies intact is dead teens then you'll just have to deal with it.

Is reading comprehension something you struggle with? Suicide rates are HIGHER for POST-OP mtf transgenders. And no, I don't get to speak for others, but I certainly get to voice my opinion. [–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Is reading comprehension something you struggle with?

Not for me, but you seem to have problems with simple literacy.

There has been no mention of the kid having SRS (sex reassignment surgery), so you saying:

My biggest problem with this is they are preparing the child to have his genitals removed.

is probably very apt.

As for your claim that suicide rates are higher for post-op trans people, I presume you're referring to this study: Long-Term Follow-Up of Transsexual Persons Undergoing Sex Reassignment Surgery: Cohort Study in Sweden

It's interesting that the study also states:

It is therefore important to note that the current study is only informative with respect to transsexual persons health after sex reassignment; no inferences can be drawn as to the effectiveness of sex reassignment as a treatment for transsexualism. In other words, the results should not be interpreted such as sex reassignment per se increases morbidity and mortality. Things might have been even worse without sex reassignment.

Or were you referring to some other study? Were you referring to a study at all, or just some editorialised and sensationalised nonsense like the original link?

When you say suicide rates are higher, are you comparing to pre-op trans or to the general public or what? You can't just make a comparison without clearly stating what you are comparing to.

Adults speak to children in a manner they'll understand. Did you still not understand? Poor kid. And I cited evidence, you even linked it. Poor, poor child. Also, you've misapplied that fallacy to this case. Just FYI.

[–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You made two claims:

  1. "they (the parents) are preparing the child to have his genitals removed."
  2. "Post-op MtFs are more likely to commit suicide"

Point 1 is just false. There is no mention in either the joeforamerica article nor the original Daily Mail article of Tammy going for sex reassignment surgery.

As for point 2... firstly, you did not cite it. You referred to "a study from Sweden" but did not provide a link. At least you admitted my link was correct. HOWEVER, you assert that the Swedish Study demonstrates a causal link between SRS and suicide, ie that "Post-op MtFs are more likely to commit suicide".

The study explicitly states "the results should not be interpreted such as sex reassignment per se increases morbidity and mortality." Ie, that one should NOT infer a causal link between SRS and suicide.

So point 2 is false as well.

You did say one other thing, though, "I don't think children can make such life altering decisions." That's the point. The parents (and the childcare professionals around them) are merely DELAYING puberty until the kid can make an informed, adult choice and if Tammy decides to become Tommy again then he simply stops taking the blockers and, within a few months, he will start male puberty.

Puberty makes major physical changes to the body that are hard to undo surgically and impossible chemically. If Tammy wishes to continue with transition, then she will start hormone replacement therapy and go through female puberty.

There is no mention of surgery at the moment and no mention of forcing the kid to do anything, merely keeping her body from becoming an adult man's body until she decides as an adult which she wants.

[–]Ithelda 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

What, where you said there was less of a chance of being able to orgasm? That's not the same as "never" experiencing an orgasm. If the parents were forcing a minor to get SRS that would be hugely problematic but if an adult wants to risk their ability to orgasm, who cares?

[–]K1NTOUN 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The inability to orgasm is one of the many reasons suicide rates increase post-op. It's one thing to think you don't need it, but when it's gone forever is something different. This is why I care. And I said a 25% chance of NEVER being able to orgasm.

[–]Ithelda 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What exactly is your crusade here though? Do you think people's doctors don't discuss this with them? If this kid ends up wanting SRS knowing the risks, what does that have to do with you?

[–]K1NTOUN 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I care because of the reason the person wants SRS. From what I've read, most transgender people want it to feel fully accepted by biological females. They do it to fit into a society that targets and abuses trans women, people who claim trans women are not real women until they mutilate themselves. I think if society wasn't so damn prejudiced against trans people, none of these people would have this surgery done. I'd rather these women accept themselves for what they are, women inside a man's body. Removing such a vital organ for nothing more than acceptance from bigoted people is appalling to me. No one feels they should have a vagina. If trans women were raised in a fictional society where no one knew about each others genitalia, none of them would feel biologically inclined to have a vagina. It's not part of their mental being. I hate people's bigotry having a profound impact on marginalized groups. It disgusts me.

[–]Ithelda 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree that the pressure for someone to conform their body to someone else's standards is sad and dangerous. But I have actually heard trans people say that exact thing- that if they were raised alone on a desert island, they would still experience dysphoria, feeling like something about their body is off. Are they just assuming that they'd feel that way because they don't know differently? Perhaps. But I don't think the profound psychological discomfort with having the wrong bodily sex characteristics just comes from other people pressuring them....

[–]K1NTOUN 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it entirely comes from an entire society of people pressuring them. No one feels like they should have organs they've never had. It's entirely societal conditioning. Those trans people you've heard say that were raised in this society, which is why they will say things like that.

No, something like 75% of post op transgender can experience "orgasm." Or at least that's what they claim. Would you take a 25% chance of never having an orgasm again? Didn't think so. I also wonder how the orgasm compares to an actual intact penis. There must be nerve damage to some degree. I feel many of these post op women are like men who have been circumcised, they don't want to accept they've been broken because they can't change it. Yes, we know transgender people have a higher suicide rate, and post op an even higher one. What are you trying to say anyway? Also, that is given a fully intact penis. Giving hormones before puberty denies the penis to fully mature, thus further impacting the quality of orgasm.

[+]yikesmysexlife -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

If you're going for the full experience of being a woman, a 25% chance of not being able to reach orgasm seems about right. The whole point of delaying puberty is so that the penis and secondary masculine characteristics that are difficult and expensive to feminize once they've manifested. Chemically delaying puberty leads to more successful transitions, and also buys the kids an extra few months or years to think about the decision that they are making. I understand the desire to have the child fully understand what is is they will be undergoing, but waiting until they are 18 SEVERELY impacts the transition, especially mtf. with the exception of a small amount of anatomy, children are fairly gender neutral until puberty. I would argue that forcing someone to go through puberty to transition into a gender they do not identify as-- and then only later, once they have reached the age of consent, allowing them to begin their transition (which will now be more expensive and problematic, and less convincing and "natural" looking--would lead to a more traumatic, difficult path for the individual.

All women can orgasm. All women don't know how to orgasm. We're talking about a 25% chance of making orgasm impossible for mtf transgender people. No amount of stimulation will allow it to occur. This is something very different than the female experience.

Yeah that's likely the case.

[+]Queen_Jezza -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm not taking either side here as I don't have enough information to make an informed judgement, but I'd like to point out that orgasm happens in the brain and not the genitals. Nerve damage likely wouldn't be a factor in the strength of orgasm. It would possibly affect how long it takes to get there though.

[–]K1NTOUN 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Of course it would have an impact. The reason clitoral orgasms are so much more intense is because there are many, many more nerve endings on the clit than on the head of the penis. Disrupting the amount of intact neural pathways would unquestionably reduce the intensity of the orgasm.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If I remember correctly from the last time I researched it, a glans has about 4,000 nerve endings, a clitoris about 8,000, and a foreskin about 24,000.

[–]K1NTOUN -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Not all nerve endings are created equal. The type on the foreskin don't contribute to pleasure on anything close to the scale as the glans.

[–]intensely_human[🍰] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I'm sure they evolved for all the fine motor actions a foreskin makes, just like fingertips.

[–]K1NTOUN 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There are many types of nerve and nerve endings in the human body. And that figure of 20000+ is not anywhere near a proven fact. There are no confirmed studies in this area. I assume you must be circumcised because no one with an intact penis would argue that the head is less sensitive than the foreskin. The greatest benefit of the foreksin in my opinion is protecting the glans, making it more sensitive. You make it sound like someone would sooner lose the glans of their penis than their foreskin, which is obviously the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I remember this story from a few years back. I actually read around, not just following someone's outrage click-bait.

Turns out the two women have adopted three boys and the oldest two are perfectly happy MEN. It's only the youngest who is trans.

Bear in mind they have to deal with CPS, as well as various doctors/psychologists/whatever.

It really doesn't sound to me like the mothers are 'pushing' their ideology onto a child willy-nilly. If that were the case, we would be reading about how the child had been taken from the parents. It's possible, being California (San Francisco even) that feminist has infested the medical/social services so much that they're ALL willing to abet lesbians 'curing' a child of toxic masculinity.

But then the story would be about medical malpractice, not just "OMG dykes!"

You know what would be child abuse? Forcing the kid into a gender identity they don't want. You've let some bigot convince you that the kid is being forced to be female, when the truth is they're trying to find a way to allow them to become the gender they feel is right. All they're doing is DELAYING puberty until the kid is old enough to make a choice, and that delay is being monitored by a slew of health and social care professionals.

[–]samsc2 269 points270 points271 points 10 years ago (50 children) | Copy Link

that kid is going to be fucked up for the rest of his life not just emotionally but physically due to the hormones his genitalia might never mature fully leaving him with possible micro penis syndrome

[–]My_Big_Fat_Kot 61 points62 points63 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I remember hearing about a guy who had a botched circumcision as a baby, so their parents decided (on advice from a doctor) to turn it into a vagina, and raise him/her as a girl. He always was the odd one of his group, and he didn't fit in with the girls, but neither with the guys as well. After his parents told him, he (tried) to switch back to being a man, but eventually comited suicide.

Never fuck around with gender identity unless you know exactly what you are doing, and what it entails. And don't do anything if you don't want to do it.

Societies decide what genders there are and where the partitions fall between them.

Biological sex has a huge influence in who we turn out to be, most of the time. That's the reason that almost every society has had two genders, because it's the most intuitive system.

Only a small fraction of the population experience a desire to embody the gender that was made for the typical individual of the opposite sex. It works out because their particular personality meshes better with that gender role than the one that is typically attributed to their biological sex.

That boy wasn't part of that small fraction, and thus experienced gender dysphoria because of that terrible experiment. The gender he was raised as didn't fit his personality, because our personalities are hugely affected by our chromosomes.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That it's 'all made up' isn't even close what a social construct actually is.

[–]samsc2 24 points25 points26 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it was actually twins where one boy had a botched circumcision so they raised that boy as a girl and he never identified as one then they finally told him he was a he after he was already fucked up. It showed that gender is not a social construct but a physical thing

[–]JebberJabber 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It isn't a physical thing, it is a mental thing. Trans people have brains physically resembling and working like the opposite sex. That's not social conditioning, it's neurology.

[–]samsc2 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Neurology is a physical thing... Meaning the brain more resembles that of the other sex they are. I'm talking about nature vs nurture. Gender is a nature concept not one that is nurtured.

[–]iamnotwhomiappear 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Trans people have brains physically resembling and working like the opposite sex.

I very much doubt this is true, especially prior to their receiving any hormones and so forth.

If it is true at all, this still does not necessarily indicate that they were born that way, because of epigenetics and neuroplasticity.

[–]JebberJabber 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you considered whether you could change your own gender identity or orientation? How do you know you are living the correct life for yourself?

[–]ACoderGirl 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're thinking of the David Reimer case. It's an excellent example of how gender is innate and not learned.

It's not applicable to trans people, though, since nobody does irreversible stuff until the person is much older. HRT is typically delayed until 16. SRS is 18+. Prior to that is simply a puberty blocker so that no irreversible change occurs (namely the "normal" puberty that occurs without the blocker).

It's usually considered to be the best of both worlds, since the child doesn't go through either the "normal" puberty that could be quite distressing if they're trans or the opposite puberty that could be quite problematic if they're cis.

It's also noteworthy that HRT has some degree of reversibility, especially during the first few months. It's definitely much more permanent, though. And SRS is completely irreversible. HRT can always be safely stopped and most things would revert. Pretty much everything that doesn't reverse on its own has some way to deal with it, though. Detransitioning after starting HRT is extremely rare, though. For a lot of people, by the time they start HRT, they're pretty darn sure of what they're doing.

this is an important story in this context because it involves transitioning a little boy, who probably, like most boys, did not identify as a girl. the decision to transition him was made without is knowledge or consent. living with the dysphoria of feeling "in the wrong body", and the fact that his parents deceived and drugged him his whole life lead to neurosis and depression. the dual morals of the story? don't circumcise your boys, and don't force children to be a sex/gender they are not interested in being! identifying as one gender and being forced to live as another is the leading cause of depression and neurosis among trans folks. the earlier they are taken seriously, the more support they are given, and the more "normal" they get to feel in their life, the less likely they are to develop chronic depression.

[–]EsraYmssik 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

this is an important story in this context because it involves transitioning a little boy

No it fucking does NOT involve transitioning a little boy. It involves a trans child who is being supported by their parents, doctors, psychologists, endocrinologists, social workers and CPS, in their growth toward a successful adulthood by DELAYING puberty until the kid is old enough to make an informed decision.

I don't know where your post comes from, because it has NOTHING to do with this story.

the decision to transition him was made without is knowledge or consent.

How the hell do you get to that idea? Child care professionals (medical and social) are required by law in California to report suspected abuse. There is no way the kid is getting puberty blockers without a diagnosis and if the relevant doctors thought there was coercion they would a) not diagnose and not prescribe, and b) report it.

[–]yikesmysexlife 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm referring to the case of the boy who suffered a botched circumcision so his parents decided he'd have a better life as a girl. the results were tragic. that case was brought up earlier in the thread to illustrate, I believe, how terrible transitioning a child could be, and I was arguing that that case was not only ENTIRELY different, but actually pretty damning of the premise of this post (and if that's not clear enough, I fully support the decisions of the couple, and find the idea that it's child abuse to listen to your kid when they tell you they are not the gender they were assigned at birth ridiculous and infuriating.)

I make jokes, but really it's never really negatively impacted my life. We are who we are, and I am as I was made. I'v had my fair share of sexual partners, I've fathered a child, been married... Life is what you make of it. I mean, if that one-armed girl can be a weightlifter, I can have sex with a small penis. Don't let your fear allow life to intimidate you. Manage the things you can improve -- develop sharp social skills, get good at hobbies and impress people, keep yourself hygienic and looking good, work out and get yourself in shape, be a legitimately caring person, be interesting and well-read, learn to be a good lover despite your size because "huge" doesn't automatically equate to "good". These are the things that will bring love into your life, not a monster wang. And if you get left because someone is dissatisfied with your downstairs, that's just how things roll -- you can't make someone want what they don't. It's been my experience that women want to date a whole person, not just a cock. If that was the case, men everywhere would be out of luck because you can always manufacture a bigger dildo and buy frozen sperm, yet somehow women still stay with men of all wiener shapes and sizes and deal with the problems inherent in being in a relationship with another person because there's more to them than just their trouser parts. Live a full life man, you are more than a penis.

From what I understand, delaying these hormones isn't medically detrimental. They can be administered at a later time and the person will develop normally. I had a friend growing up that had some kind of glandular disorder where he did not enter puberty naturally. When the doctors found out, they gave him the hormones and he shot up to 6ft and looked just as mature as the next guy.

[–]PoundnColons 32 points33 points34 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Hormones are very powerful even later in life past our natural developmental phase. The introduction of more hormones will spike development according to those hormones. If it didn't anabolic steroid and HGH usage wouldn't work to develop unnatural amounts of muscle.

[–]heimdahl81 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

When the hormones are applied, puberty is triggered. They don't skip puberty, they just delay it. The benefit for someone who wishes to transition to a different sex is that the hormone replacement therapy is more effective if the body doesn't have to work to undo the changes of puberty. Their transition is more effective.

[–]overtmind 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]dude-meister 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why would you imagine that when it takes only a quick google search to find out that that is not the case? You can go through puberty just fine at a much later age if you are found to be lacking a hormone required for normal development.

[–]Singulaire 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"later age" is a vague term. At some point your growth plates eventually close after which further growth won't happen no matter what hormones you apply. Increased estrogen levels hasten this process.

[–]dude-meister 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are right that estrogen closes the growth plates. But, the treatment people are talking about here is one that suppresses puberty.

Men who have low levels of testosterone usually wind up abnormally tall- eunuchs, Kallman syndrome, Kleinfelter's syndrome. Blocking testosterone will if anything increase final height.

This child will most likely have puberty suppressed continually until years later she decides to go on estrogen, and that is a much more irreversible decision. It can lead to infertility, and as you mention, limit adult height. But at that point, if the child wants to grow taller, she can always wait it out.

[–]ACoderGirl 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's not a reported side effect of puberty blockers (and it should be made clear that blockers are not the same as HRT, as some seem to be mistaking).

Here's a good article on blockers and their issues. The main issue is that they are so new that they aren't well studied for long term effects. However, what studies we do have show them to be quite effective and safe. Certainly organizations like the Endocrine Society (the leading organization for endocrinology, which is everything hormone related) found them good enough to recommend. And certainly I'm inclined to think that they're the experts here, not inexperienced people on internet forums.

Specifically what the article has to say on side effects is simply:

The physical changes that hormones bring about are irreversible, making the decision more weighty than taking puberty blockers. Some of the known side effects of hormones include things that might sound familiar: acne and changes in mood. Patients are also warned that they may be at higher risk for heart disease or diabetes later in life. The risk of blood clots increases for those who start estrogen. And the risk for cancer is an unknown, but it is included in the warnings doctors give their patients.

Another potential dilemma facing transgender children, their families and their doctors is this: Taking cross hormones can reduce fertility. And there isn’t enough research to find out of it is reversible or not. So when children make the decision to start taking hormones, they have to consider whether they ever want to have biological children.

So... yeah, no micro penis. Penis growth should normally happen in puberty, which blockers only put off. Puberty goes on more or less as normal once the blockers are stopped. Really the biggest side effect is that if you're wrong and it turn's out it was just a phrase, then your puberty is delayed, which would probably be a bit awkward, but quite minor in the grand scheme of things.

[–]skywreckdemon 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]omegaphallic 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was intially opposed to this, but if the puberty blockers are reversibly by just stop taking them, then the effect should be minimal, nor should it effect penis size.

Still the kid should see a shrink to make sure this is something the child isn't being pressured into, otherwise I'm okay with it. Any lasting choices will be delayed till 18 or older.

[–]decompyler 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Is that because they aren't feeding their babies mother's milk or just a vegan diet? Just because they're doing a vegan diet doesn't mean that is the reason for malnutrition as you can be vegan by eating oreo's alone.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Babies need very specific nutrients which by necessity pretty much come from either breast milk or formula neither of which are generally vegan. Simply put, veganism is a lot of work and often done incorrectly because it's difficult to get all the nutrients you need unless you track it closely. The best example is probably protein, most sources of plant protein are incomplete which can create long term deficiencies in terms of amino acids.

From a practical standpoint, babies are somewhat picky eaters who don't handle new or non traditional foods well. This makes any sort of attempts at veganism very difficult with babies. Honestly, people can be vegan all they want, but they shouldn't force that ideology (which is what it is 9/10 times) on newborns

[–]decompyler 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Breast milk is vegan. Any "vegan" that says otherwise doesn't know what they are talking about.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

The issue isn't whether breast milk is vegan. Realistically, the quality of the breast milk will be limited somewhat by the nutrition of the mother. So while mammary glands are pretty good at what they do, a vegan woman who is nutritionally deficient in a particular amino acid is going to produce milk deficient in that amino acid. Also, most women don't breastfeed beyond a few months, so they generally move to formula. Commercial formula is not vegan, so than parents by unregulated special formula or they switch to traditional food, both of which run the issue of nutritional deficiencies in babies

[–]decompyler -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is soy based formula that is vegan and it rare that a vegan is deficient in anything unless they just have an eating disorder at which point their body probably wouldn't have been capable of carrying a child to term in the first place. It really isn't hard to get all essential nutrients as a vegan save for b12 which omnivores should be taking as well anyways. Being vegan isn't the problem with those cases, just ignorance and neglect.

[–]deadalnix 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That 'something' is all in your head. You do realise those women have two other sons who are happily cis-gendered and IIRC straight? Or does that not-compute?

They are not 'pushing' their kid in any way. Try reading around the article a bit, rather than relying on outrage-bait.

Consider that the kid is surrounded by CPS, doctors, psychologists and the adoption agency. Consider also that this is (was) national news. If something untoward was going on, someone would have raised an issue.

Most gay couples are normal couples. What these people are doing is comparable to indoctrinating their child into a cult or sending them to a monastery. They're goading the kid into a life- altering decision. It's unlikely that this kid is capable of understanding the feelings that they associate with "being trans", much less the consequences for the decision to transition. It sounds like they might be psychologically abusing the kid, which is decidedly abnormal.

[–]MittenMagick 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, its comparable if the cult/monastery chemically castrated you.

[–]Doctor_Loggins 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, monasteries have you swear off sex and cults tend to ruin you financially, so while it's not a direct comparison, there are enough similarities to sustain the metaphor.

Lol, muh transphobia. 99% of people who have a problem with trans don't actually hate people for being trans, they disagree that it's a gender to begin with, and they hate that people are normalizing gender mutilation as a means to "fix" it.

If you're trans, I'm perfectly fine with that, but you're not going to convince me that it's anything other than a brain disorder and that sex change is a terrible thing. That's pretty much what 99% of "transphobia" constitutes. Not agreeing on what it is.

To me, you're nothing but a child abuse enabler. You might as well argue that little Timmy enjoys when uncle Bob touches him at night so that makes it okay.

[–]PoundnColons 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm generally very supportive of trans issues. This is something I would hope we could all agree is an issue that should be discussed at great lengths before we as a society decide its ok the start transitioning a prepubescent child's gender due to their currently undeveloped brain's gender identity. This isn't just a trans issue but a child's right issue as well, should we protect children from their parent's decisions when it may be detrimental to them? When it infringes on their right to sovereignty over their own body? Making changes at that age just doesn't sound morally right to me.

Hope it's not too out of line but I wouldn't mind hearing /u/Nacmar's opinion on this as I have no way of viewing the issue from that perspective.

[–]dude-meister 78 points79 points80 points 10 years ago (32 children) | Copy Link

I've seen this photo before. The young child certainly does not LOOK happy, or seem happy, but a single photo can be pretty deceiving. This photo has made the rounds in articles having vague to explicit anti-gay themes (unfit to be a parent!) anti-trans themes (its unnatural and against nature!) and anti-feminist themes (look, these FEMINISTS are turning their son into a girl!!!)

Now, I'm here for the same reason as all of you-- I don't like feminist overreach, misandry, or the demonization of men. But there is no evidence here that any of that has happened.

This is not new reporting-- its recycled from 2011. With the recent explosion of attention to transgender issues, why dredge up a photo from half a decade ago? because it fits a narrative. Which Hillary do you like? This one, or this one? Which McCain? This one, or this one? The photo doesn't tell the story.

If you read a CNN article on the couple, you will find out that the young trans girl's older brothers are both identifying as boys, and are athletic and boisterous-- basically they fit the masculine stereotype to the T. You can see the girl as a young boy, dressed as a boy, and held in a little car by her parents. You can see her looking considerably more happy than in the photo from the hit-job article. You can see that she has had some pretty difficult health problems as well that are not mentioned in the other article.

You can go online and read articles about this family that push other narratives as well: "Lesbian Jews Brainwash Adopted Gentile 11-Year-Old to Take Hormone Therapy to Prevent Puberty as a Male". Those Jews! Always brainwashing young gentiles!! No need to google the article-- you can probably guess it's pretty antisemitic.

The photo doesn't look great, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Please don't read this article and come to snap judgments.

Agreed. This is a pretty shitty article that shows the sub's true colours. Seriously, do you guys not notice how completely and utterly biased this article is? It's a really shitty source.

Now, obviously such a mislead article is not going to give truthful or accurate information. I note that it seems to confuse puberty blockers with HRT, for example. It claims the kid was on "hormone treatment" (which implies HRT), but it also says "to delay puberty", which implies blockers. And for such a young person, blockers are really all that's used. Among doctors who actually know what they're doing, blockers aren't controversial. The issues that they may cause are pretty minor and rare compared to the issues that a trans person has from going through puberty.

Puberty blockers are very safe. There's a reason that they're used. It's so that HRT can be put off until the child is old enough. ie, the very thing that a lot of you in this sub seem to be up in arms about. Some of you guys are probably gonna think "but it's making permanent changes that the kid isn't able to make good choices on". Except that's not the case. Blockers simply maintain the status quo. NOT having blockers means a permanent change. So by rejecting the child's claim to be trans, you're forcing them to go through permanent changes (namely puberty). And changes that can be quite distressing for trans people. Some of you guys act like HRT is being forced on cis people, but that's not really any different from denying trans people access to blockers. The fact that the parents are lesbians seems like a red herring to imply that the parents are trying to force this on their child (which is stated nowhere, but y'all have assumed it).

I'm gonna be blunt. The uneducated views some of you guys have and how freaking strong those views are really show something. Some of your views are really quite stupid. Kids aren't being forced or pushed to transition. The diagnosis criteria for diagnosing kids as trans is really, really strict. Way, way stricter than with adults. It's not something you're going to easily circumvent. Combined with the fact that you'd be on blockers for years. Usually HRT won't get prescribed until 16. And there's always plenty of therapy involved for these cases.

It seems like what the real case is here is that the kid expressed trans views. Parents take her to a therapist. At some point the kid gets diagnosed (same way as any other mental condition) by a psychiatrist. Parents then agree to follow the conventionally agreed on treatment as set by WPATH (the primary trans health organization). They haven't done anything unusual at all, except, oh, not refusing medical treatment like many transphobic parents do. We're talking generally agreed on medical guidelines here. Not some bullshit that the parents came up with.

Again, this article is complete dogshit. Come on guys, this is like trying to get political news from a blog writer that believes lizard men control everything. You shouldn't be making any kinds of judgements on this. Heck, if you can't tell that the article is horrible, then something is wrong.

There seems to be a trend here to associate trans rights with feminism. A moderate version of this is when people say that MRAs are not actively interested in LGBT themes since these should have their own completely separate movements. This thread shows the less moderate, sadder version, in which a child is "mutilated" by lesbian parents influenced by feminism and the ever-present gay agenda.

It all makes threads like these a miserable experience. If anything, men's rights activists should have a lot in common with the transgender rights movement. A huge amount of persecution trans people face is because of misandry: men have pretty strict gender norms, and many people (who have no idea about what being transgender is really about) view transwomen as men (or "failed men") who go against these norms. Even one visible sign like a feminine accessory may be enough. A transman (or a ciswoman starting to wonder if they're completely binary) can generally have more freedom in exploring ways to express their identity. Opposing misandry is an important goal for cismen, transmen and transwomen.

I'm not a feminist myself (I may even seem pretty antifeminist at times), but I must admit that the useful distinction between gender and sex in the English language is largely because of feminist influence in the 70s. It saddens me that people in this sub seem to view the term gender as a strictly feminist concept and thus false and evil.

[–]dude-meister 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow, this is a very detailed, factual explanation about the medical treatment of gender transition.

Just to add on to what you said a little more-- for children, it is usually not enough that they just express trans views, I would imagine that diagnosis would involve interviewing the parents about long-standing patterns of behavior, preferences in friends, in hobbies, in dress, and so on that persist for years in the face of societal and peer pressure.

Thank you for bringing some facts to this. This subreddit often claims to value facts, evidence, due process. But it sometimes devolves into mirror-image feminism on some topics, and this is apparently one of them.

It's doubly bad because this subreddit, and movement generally, also claims to welcome trans people, and the comments here are remarkably hostile to the best outcomes for trans people. We have TEMRAs, apparently.

[–]AtomicBLB 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the concept of "personal identity" is lost on too many people so they make ignorant statements. More than it should be is hostile though.

I didn't always know who I was or what I wanted to be in life but I know I have always seen myself as male. When I see members of the opposite sex vs my own I overwhelmingly know that I desire the opposite sex in a romantic way and not my own.

I don't understand what a trans person is thinking and feeling because I have never felt that way. However they should know themselves enough to make that kind of decision so that is their business. I wish people could butt out of others lives because we all want the same thing. To be happy.

The problem with this is that they're giving her hormone therapy, which will alter her physiology forever. That's not a decision anyone can make at 11. Of course there's no problem with her living as a girl.

[–]skywreckdemon 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The kid is being given hormone blockers, not cross-sex hormones. Hormone blockers just prevent puberty until the child is old enough to know if transition really is the right thing for them.

No they are not! How about you read around the fucking article, instead of knee-jerking over outrage-bait?

The kid was (considering this story's about 5 years old) being prescribed (by a doctor 'n' all, ie a medically trained professional acting with CPS and other child welfare agencies) puberty BLOCKERS.

All those blockers are doing is DELAYING hormonal changes which will alter "her physiology forever", until the kid is mature enough to make an informed, adult choice. Then the blockers will stop and either normal male puberty kicks in, or they receive hormone therapy as part of a transition. Either way it will be that individuals adult choice.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Delaying puberty would absolutely have permanent effects.

I'm curious, what PERMANENT effects would those be?

I'd be really interested to read the research on this. My understanding was that puberty blockers were supposed to be safe.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, I'm sure they are safe for their intended use - delaying puberty when it occurs prematurely. It turns out there's very little research on using them for gender transition: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/when-transgender-kids-transition-medical-risks-are-both-known-and-unknown/

But I think it's pretty clear that they're going to have some kind of lasting effect. Puberty is a huge transformation that has effects on pretty much every part of the body. If someone is claiming that it's safe to delay that until age 16 or whatever they're suggesting, the burden of proof is entirely on them to prove that it's safe.

[–]EsraYmssik 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's an interesting news story.

However, the Endocrine News says of puberty blockers:

Usually between ages 14 and 16, patients still look prepubertal compared with the maturity of their peers. Although the delay can be psychologically challenging for the patients who may desire to look like their preferred genders, the slowdown gives them an opportunity to reconsider the transition. GnRH analogues are reversible. Cessation of them usually results in patients restarting their genetically intended puberty within six months.

An article published by NIH says:

In the absence of pubertal blockers, biological males with affirmed female identities may experience significant growth, permanent facial hair and vocal changes, and intolerable erections. A voice that has deepened cannot be raised through hormone therapy, and requires difficult and expensive speech therapy, in order to affect a higher voice. Similarly, without such intervention, biological females who identify as male may experience menstruation and breast development; the latter can only be modified through surgery. Nevertheless, an adolescent who has initiated puberty blockers can decide to terminate the intervention and allow physiological changes to occur as they would have, had the medical intervention never been initiated.

So the evidence (actual peer-reviewed research) suggests no long-term effects from using puberty blockers.

OTOH, the American Academy of Pediatrics says of trans teens who had been treated with puberty blockers:

After gender reassignment, in young adulthood, the GD was alleviated and psychological functioning had steadily improved. Well-being was similar to or better than same-age young adults from the general population. Improvements in psychological functioning were positively correlated with postsurgical subjective well-being.

So, please, can you link to real science showing the long term negative effects of puberty blockers and how those negatives outweigh the positives?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't see much there about the potential health effects of the puberty blockers themselves, when used to delay puberty beyond its natural starting point. It seems like the articles you quoted claim that:

1) Puberty does start up again when they stop taking the drugs

2) Postponing puberty until hormone therapy starts can make the transition more effective (in terms of ability to pass as their preferred gender)

3) People who used the puberty blockers and then went through with hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery were happy during young adulthood

This is all good, but I think it's also important to establish that:

1) Delaying puberty by multiple years over when it would naturally occur doesn't cause serious health problems in the long term

2) Delaying puberty doesn't cause psychological problems for people who decide not to go through with hormone therapy and gender reassignment

I searched a little in the literature and couldn't find much for those second two questions. I think given the fact that 11-year olds do not have the ability to make sound long-term decisions, and given that their parents will have a huge influence over these decisions, it's very important to make sure this treatment is completely reversible and safe. How can we be sure that parents aren't coercing their children into doing this?

[–]Atheist101 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

11 is too young to decide your gender. Your brain isnt fully matured yet to make such life altering decisions. When I was 11, I wanted to fly...doesnt mean they should surgically attach wings to my back just because thats my whim at age 11

Does anyone have an update as this is from a year ago?

[–]Seventh_Planet 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Which of these cases is more likely?

a) a boy to a lesbian couple is raised as a boy, and wants to be a boy, lives his life as a man.

b) a boy to a lesbian couple is raised as a boy, wants to be a girl, because deep inside him he doesn't feel right as a boy, has to endure puberty of a boy, his body becoming more and more strange to him, then maybe in his late twenties he decides to get a transition to become a female, and lives better and a happier live afterwards.

c) a boy to a lesbian couple is raised as a boy, but at an early age he expresses his wish to his parents, that he is a girl, and wants to be a girl. So the parents talk to doctors to get their opinions, and are told that a transition can be more healthy and more fulfilling, if it happens before puberty. So the parents allow their child to undergo transition at that early age of 8, the boy becomes a girl, lives as girl and grows up to be a woman, leaving a happy and healthy life.

d) a boy to a lesbian couple is raised as a girl, and is being pressured by his parents into questioning his own gender identity, and out of pressure or to do his parents a favor, he asks them, if he could be a girl instead of a boy. The parents allow it, and the boy undergoes transition at an early age, becoming a woman after puberty, and living life as a woman.

That honesty is genuinely admirable. Have an upvote.

I'd like to suggest to you an alternative view on this story.

Consider firstly that the link (joeforamerica.com) is a trad-con site relying on outrage-bait to drive traffic.

Consider also that the parents have to deal with doctors and child psychologists who are required by law to report child abuse, as well as dealing with child protective services.

It is more likely that the child actually is trans and that the parents are trying to do the best they can and that the child is only being prescribed hormone blockers until they are old enough to make an informed decision as to their future and that if they decide they are male, the blockers stop and male puberty kicks in, but if they decide (as an adult) that they are female then hormone treatments start and the kid goes through female puberty.

This is probably one of THE most grey areas I've ever walked across on this subreddit.

I had to do a bit of digging to get some more information. I came across:

"The 3-year-old had learned sign language because he had apraxia, a speech impediment that hindered his ability to talk. The toddler pointed to himself and signed, "I am a girl."

"Oh look, he's confused," his parents said. Maybe he mixed up the signs for boy and girl. So they signed back. "No, no. Thomas is a boy."

But the toddler shook his head. "I am a girl," he signed back emphatically."

One the one hand, if this is indeed an honest recollection of events, then it doesn't seem like these mothers are the 'Marxist Feminist' types. However, given that the child has a speech impediment, I am curious as to whether 'gender identity' could be another disorder in this specific case. Also, 3 years old is extremely young to be cognitively aware of gender -- not going just by my own experience, but also having helped raise my younger brother (4 years younger than me) and my younger twin sisters (who are 20 years younger than me), who didn't even notice there was a difference in genitalia between males and females until age 6.

All that being said, I see that they put their child on a hormone blocker as opposed to a hormone replacement therapy. I would very much like to know with absolute certainty what the involved risks are, such as potential major health issues, the potential for winding up with a micropenis if the child ever decided to stick with being a male and if the penis is incapable of growing much after going through puberty at an adult age. This is the kind of shit I'd like to know before making a hasty judgement, because as much as my gut wants me to believe that this is a cut-and-dry case of two SJW mothers regretting adopting a 3rd son and wanting to turn him into a daughter, I can't in good conscience be as knee-jerky as all the SJW trash out there.

This isn't something humans have just done naturally for thousands of years, so there is no objectively correct answer, yet. If this child were to change their mind before or once they turn 18 and want to be a male after all, if their genitalia can still grow despite already being adult aged, then I find it difficult to argue against.

[–]ethanwnashville 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. Not to be harsh or anything but this generation needs to toughen up a bit, I don't understand why everyone is bitching and moaning about gender identity at such a young age. It's not like they need to have sex right away or the world will cease to exist, if that even matters to anyone lol

They didn't force this idea on him, this kid insisted that they were a girl from very early on, was seeing psychiatrists, and threatening genital mutilation. They aren't transitioning the kid, just using hormones to delay puberty until they're old enough to really go through with it so they can transition a lot easier. Is this the smartest decision? I dunno. Is it as bad as the author and title make it out to be? Nah, man.

joeforamerica is not an unbiased source, and it's not as bad as it's being made out. If he does change his mind when he's older, there won't be major permanent effects

In case anyone else is confused, the bold sentence is using the singular "they"; the first "they" refers to the parents, but the second and third "they" refer to the kid.

I had to read it a few times before it made any goddamn sense. This is the a problem with singular "they".

Read's just as easy as he's not transitioning the kid, just using hormones to delay puberty until he's old enough to really go through with it so they can transition a lot easier.

Ambiguity can be mitigated out by referring to proper names, and as writers of the article they shouldn't leave any ambguity, but the singular they is simply part of grammar. There's no real reason to have a problem with it.

Suicide among transgendered kids is already insanely high, but not for the reasons I think you're imagining.

[–]Zemzelett 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Trans regret is a thing too. They transition, regret sinks in, and then they commit suicide. I have a feeling that's how this kid is going to end up.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Literally everything you said is conjecture, and you do not know this child at all. Do you not see how that's a problem?

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 25 points26 points27 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's insanely high after transition too, so it being high isn't just for the reasons you're imagining.

Most mentally ill people have a high suicide rate so it's not that surprising.

[–]PeterPorky 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Be careful with that generalization.

Homosexuals have a high suicide rate. Is it because being attracted to the same sex is inherently linked to depression with no societal factors?

No, homosexuals being bullied and treated as second-class human beings leads to depression. This is especially true for transgendered people.

After transition, you're in a heap of debt, obviously have some identity/body issues to get used to, having a good percentage of your friends and family be utterly disgusted with you or hate you, etc.

95% of post-op transexuals prefer their post-op life than their pre-op life.

" Most shockingly, their suicide mortality rose almost 20-fold above the comparable nontransgender population. This disturbing result has as yet no explanation"

There's a higher suicide rate among all non-cis people. For many years they haven't had the same rights/protections/public support that they do today.

But following your logic to fruition, you mean to say: It doesn't matter. He'll be suicidal either way.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I never said it didn't matter. The point is that not all of their problems can easily be attributed to being transgender so it's misleading to present them as such.

[–]Jugh3ad 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This is a tough one. One thing that has not been mentioned in this thread is this...

At age seven, after threatening genital mutilation on himself, psychiatrists diagnosed Thomas with gender identity disorder.

Now I'm very anti forcing a child to do anything. Hell, I am anti circumcision on children. The fact that the kid threatened to cut off their genitals is a huge red flag.

[–]WAFC -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Usually when crazy people threaten to mutilate themselves we get them help...not delay puberty so that the self-mutilation will be easier later.

[–]ACoderGirl 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Except for trans people (or possible trans people), transitioning is the treatment (and one that's backed by numerous studies). Delaying puberty is not necessary for transitioning, but it makes it much easier and avoids the dysphoria that comes from experiencing the wrong puberty. And for children, therapy is almost always included here (particularly since diagnosis of trans children is held to much stricter standards than adults).

Plus, there's the fact that the kid is however old he is now (too lazy to check dates) and clearly has not mutilated their genitals. Either something's working or it was an empty threat (honestly, the urge to mutilate their genitals is pretty common among trans people, but I've yet to hear about anyone actually doing it).

[–]WAFC -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

and one that's backed by numerous studies

Studies aren't worth much to me anymore. In academia, often there is only one 'acceptable' outcome to a study. Leftists use science to confirm their political beliefs, not challenge them.

That being the case, I don't agree that when your brain thinks it is in the wrong body, we should mutilate the body so that the brain may keep its delusion. Seems an awful lot like telling schizos to listen to the voices.

Either something's working or it was an empty threat (honestly, the urge to mutilate their genitals is pretty common among trans people, but I've yet to hear about anyone actually doing it).

"It's almost always an empty threat, but since this kid hasn't mutilated itself and it supports my worldview, I think it's because the 'treatment' is working this time!

Studies aren't worth much to me anymore. In academia, often there is only one 'acceptable' outcome to a study. Leftists use science to confirm their political beliefs, not challenge them.

So if scientific studies aren't worth listening to, what is? Your feelings? Can't you see how hypocritical that sounds? And just blaming things on "leftists"? Come on, mate.

That being the case, I don't agree that when your brain thinks it is in the wrong body, we should mutilate the body so that the brain may keep its delusion. Seems an awful lot like telling schizos to listen to the voices.

Well, you're using some pretty damn leading language here. Is it mutilating the body when we do an organ transplant, as well? Is cleft lip surgery mutilation? I'd call that correction, not mutilation. Mutilation implies that things are made worse. Most people who've had SRS are pretty damn happy about it.

And you also call the actual transgenderism "delusion", which goes against the consensus of psychologists, including the writers of the DSM-5. What makes you more competent than them?

Seems an awful lot like telling schizos to listen to the voices.

Apples to oranges. Mental conditions aren't all treated the same way. The most particular point to note here is that transitioning is the only effective treatment for gender dysphoria. That's it. There's no pill, no therapy, no nothing that they can do except either transition or deal with the effects. What do you want them to do? Shut up and deal with the condition in silence because it makes you uncomfortable? A condition that is severe enough to drive some people to suicide? Your views are dangerous.

[–]WAFC -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

First of all, don't try to lay anyone's suicide at my feet. Post-transition transgenders commit suicide at a high rate. Does that make your views dangerous? Of course not, because you've got some gender studies cult member in a lab coat doing 'studies' that support their political notions. Of course there isn't a pill or any other treatment. The only 'politically correct' treatment is transition because a barren, broken human being is another vote for the left.

So if scientific studies aren't worth listening to, what is? Your feelings?

Strawman. Science is only as good as the scientists. Today's scientists are run through the social justice indoctrination program known as 'higher education.'

Can't you see how hypocritical that sounds?

It doesn't sound like anything, since I never said it.

And just blaming things on "leftists"?

You can't "just" blame any one group. But leftists have certainly poisoned academia and science with their ideology. Everything that currently comes from those institutions is unfortunately tainted.

Most people who've had SRS are pretty damn happy about it.

Yes, and if someone believed their left arm was plotting to kill them, cutting off their left arm would likely make them pretty damn happy. And yes, it would be mutilation. Your attempts to conflate SRS with cleft lip surgery are ridiculous on their face. At least some attempt at good faith would be appreciated.

which goes against the consensus of psychologists, including the writers of the DSM-5.

The indoctrinated become the indoctrinators.

The brain, which resides in a male body (for example), believes it belongs in a female body. The biological reality is that the brain is in a male body. The brain is suffering from a delusion. It is not in touch with reality and this schism with reality is, unsurprisingly, causing stress.

I doubt I am more competent than they are, just free to be honest.

[–]zeMouse 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Jfc, they're giving them puberty-delaying treatments BECAUSE they're very young to be making such a permanent decision. If at any point in the next several years they decide they want to live as their birth gender, stop the treatments and male puberty proceeds as normal.

The kid isn't getting any extra female hormones or going through female puberty or getting any operations done. They simply are postponing male puberty. The entire point is that it gives the kid time to mature emotionally and mentally before they actually decide to transition.

[–]Workchoices -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

The vast majority of pre pubescent children with gender dysphoria grow out of it. Its not uncommon for children to experience discomfort about their own bodies, especially just before puberty which is what often resolves the problem.

The use of hormone suppressors in this situation is potentially risky. It hasn't been approved for this purpose and doctors who prosecribe it are really sticking their necks out. The side effects are moderate and the long term effects sre unknown.

Thst said, im not against puberty suppression as a possible treatment in certain circumstances.

[–]imdrinkingteaatwork 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That is not true. You are misconstruing things. And you don't know what you are talking about.

Gender dysphoria and gender non-conformity are different things. Gender Dysphoria is not often a stage you grow out of, in fact I don't think it ever is. Children that are gender non-conforming do sometimes change and live as the sex assigned at birth.

As for puberty suppressers, no; they are not dangerous. And those are the "hormones" in question. The article makes mistakes and you are just believing them.

[–]Workchoices 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

so do they have FDA approval to treat gender dysphoria with puberty blockers?

[–]imdrinkingteaatwork 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They don't need it. Just like psychiatrists don't need FDA approval to use SSRIs for those with obsessive compulsive disorder. It's called off-label usage.

The vast majority of pre pubescent children with gender dysphoria grow out of it.

That's not necessarily true. Although as far as I know, there's been no good studies on it. The only study I'm aware of (and is often used as an argument against trans children transitioning) is deeply flawed. They claimed a large percentage of trans children detransitioned, but that's because they counted everyone that they couldn't find as having detransitioned (even though it's logically quite likely that someone who transitioned and is using a new name would be harder to find than someone who detransitioned).

Anecdotes that I've heard from doctors who actually treat trans youth put detransitioning as a very rare thing.

The use of hormone suppressors in this situation is potentially risky.

Studies show they're very safe and improve mental health.

this isn't an uncommon plan for parents and their doctors to make this decision for their children who may be transgender and frightened of puberty. The fact that the parents are lesbian is irrelevant. This author of this article is disgusting to suggest otherwise. r/mensrights is better than this.

[–]Hypnosomnia 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The article is shit and people here just take everything in it as a fact or make up the rest of the facts themselves. Here's a better article. The child seems to be going through hormone therapy that delays puberty, and the article mentions that this gives the child "time to think" about their gender and if they want to go through more complex gender reassignment treatment when they reach adulthood. People in this thread make it seem like the parents are forcing some surgeon to mutilate the child's genitals.

[–]ACoderGirl 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The child seems to be going through hormone therapy that delays puberty

You're correct, but as a terminology thing, one would not typically call puberty blockers "hormone therapy", since that term usually is used to indicate that the actual primay sex hormones (namely estrogen and testosterone) have been supplied. For trans people, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is what actually changes things for them. It would usually be started at 16, at the earliest (based on WPATH guidelines). Although many trans people cannot start HRT until later due to issues like non-supportive parents.

[–]Hypnosomnia 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can't believe I'm going to ask this question because it annoys me when I see this question show up in almost every single post here (especially ones where it's clearly obvious what the answer is) but how does this relate to MR? This is an outrage and infuriating for sure and I don't know how this isn't considered abusive behavior but I don't see what this has to do with MR. Could someone kindly explain?

[–]fourthwallcrisis 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The abuse of a young man who is unable to give proper informed consent. In my opinion that puts is squarely within the remit of the MRM.

[–]Hypnosomnia 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I get it, but people in this thread are simply assuming that this specific case is due to feminist indocrination and brainwashing simply because the parents are lesbians. There's literally no evidence to this in this case or as a general trend with gender dysphoric children. Seems as ridiculous and far-fetched as seeing an assumed evil patriarchy behind everything.

[–]fourthwallcrisis -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Fair points - but I think my point stands. Eleven years old is far too young to make a decision about your body for the rest of your life, especially a decision of this scale.

[–]Hypnosomnia 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The specific treatment this child is going through is not "for the rest of their life", it isn't even a "decision of this scale". The child is receiving hormone blocking treatment to give them time to think about their identity and to see if the dysphoria will desist in the future. Stopping the treatment would make them go through the puberty of their natal gender at a later stage without affecting their fertility.

Edit: This article gives further information about this case.

[–]Chross 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its becoming pretty normal to delay puberty in cases of gender dysphoria until a child is old enough to make a decision on whether to transition or not. I don't get all the negative comments. If the parents were a straight couple would people be as concerned? Are there other accepted medical procedures that are socially unacceptable for homosexual parents to consent to for their children?

[–]hyugafan 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[–]heimdahl81 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

True, but a psychologist signed off on this and I hope they would have enough expertise to spot emotional abuse or coersion witththe child. But then again maybe the mothers just went from doctor to doctor until they found one who would give them what they want.

[–]fourthwallcrisis 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The girl would have to have completed puberty for that type of surgery, so 10 is a bit young but I have definitely heard of girls in their mid teens getting it done.

[+]rg57 -10 points-9 points-8 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They don't need to give consent to receive appropriate medical care. And give me a break... how "informed" do you need to be to tell people "I'm a boy" or "I'm a girl". These parents are doing the right thing.

You know, this reaction is EXACTLY like the regressive left... no nuance.. no facts... blaming parents just because of political opinions they also hold... hoping for the worst...

[–]CuriouserNdCuriouser 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think they are doing the right thing, for a 3 year old to say "I'm a girl", literally means nothing, hell lots of 3 year olds go through most days as "I'm a dog". I'm all for not pushing a gender identity, but I think the healthy way of going about that is letting the child develop regularly, and letting them identify however they would like.

The parents mention suicide for those who have to change later in life, and I think that's only due to them being shamed for their change, not being accepted as their gender identity, etc, and not due to them having to wait until they are an adult or at least an older teen to get the surgery.

Jumping on the 3 year old child's sentence of "I'm a girl" and diving in full force could be just as detrimental. Let the child explore life and their own body and stop putting so much energy on his body conforming to his gender identity.

[–]hyugafan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Plastic surgery is not proper medical care. Invasive treatment like gender reassignment surgery is a drastic medical procedure. One of my best friends is an MtF trans and he's appalled they're letting the kid do so before puberty even ends.

[–]Hypnosomnia 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

A voice of reason here. How these kind of children should (or should not) be treated is a question of science, not ideology. Far too much bashing about "stupid dykes" and overanalyzing the posture of the child in that one picture to deduce facts about that family.

Treating transgender people and other gender minorities should be based on studies like this. If we could evaluate these kind of children to be certain if their dysphoria will desist in adulthood or not and be certain that not allowing treatment (such as hormone therapy) will likely increase the risk of psychological problems in the future combined with a more accurate and evidence-based model of transgender identity development, I'd say gender treatment would be the recommended option.

Edit: after reading what kind of treatment the child is actually going through from another source, I'm glad that hormone blocking treatment is already a thing. Seems like a safe option that's far from "life changing" as other people are rambling in this thread.

Thank you for that. Gender dysphoria because of traumatic experiences or other similar reasons can be a real thing, but automatically assuming that this is the case without knowing anything about the family is just bigoted and hateful. Most parents want what is best for their child, and many parents of trans children eventually learn that helping their child to express their identity might be just that.

I'm trans and this whole 'parents pushing to have their kids transition young' makes me feel uncomfortable. Why? Because most are pushing to do it before or at the onset of puberty, a time when trans kids will know 100% they are trans because that's when we either develop or understand our gender dysphoria. I know I understood it but I sure as hell wasn't even mentally prepared to start transitioning before or during puberty, and doing this to a kid isn't going to actually help them grow up any better, it's just going to add to the confusion they are already going through on top of their gender dysphoria, if they even are trans and not just gender nonconforming.

[–]Skyrmir 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You do realise that the article doesn't mention sex reassignment surgery AT ALL, yes?

I mean, you did read it right?

OP's title is rage-bait, linking to a shitty article that is also rage-bait, on a website that relies on controversy to drive traffic.

The kid has TWO older brothers who are both happily cis and happily straight. Or at least they were when the story first broke in 2011.

The kid herself is merely taking puberty blockers until she can make an adult choice to either transition, in which case she takes female hormones and female puberty starts, or HE stops taking the blockers and male puberty starts.

There are NO long term negative effects to taking blockers, so the kids who stay cis are OK, they just develop a little later. In fact, the research shows that kids who go this route and transition are better off.

How do I know all this? I read around the story, rather than relying on a deliberately misleading inflammatory caption to form an opinion.

This is NOT a men's rights issue, it is a trans rights issue. The position we should be taking, as I understand the MHRM attitude to trans people, is that the kid is currently male so deserves our support, and if the kid was FtM then he is BECOMING male so deserves our support.

The parents are JewishAmerican. They probably paid someone to take a whack at his penis already.

FIFY, circumcision is still the 'default' AFAIK in the US.

Has anyone performed randomized controlled study on boys with pharmacologically delayed puberty, who then went on to have that released and developed in a cis manner

Yes. The original point of blockers was to treat "precocious puberty", and their use is the standard treatment.

Here is the AMA Journal of Ethics discussing this issue:

First, are we putting children at risk for short- or long-term adverse events? It is worthwhile to note that exogenous continuous GnRH [puberty blockers] administration is the standard of care for the treatment of precocious puberty, and its safety and efficacy have been extensively studied.

and

are these prepubescent children able to provide consent for the treatment? Giordano says that they can, so long as the clinician discusses all potential risks and benefits, as he or she must do with any experimental drug. Because this is the only therapy available for children with GID, it might be considered unethical to deny this treatment option.

Your final question is, "is this a decision the kid would have made on his own, or are his two parents a couple of fuck ups?" Ie is it a couple of man-hating radFem dykes twisting this little kid's head around?

Probably not, they have two other sons who are happily cis-gendered.

Yes, all three were adopted. Since the mothers happily raised two cis-gendered boys, the obvious questions is why didn't they adopt a girl?

Hormone blockers (plus all the associated psychological support/therapy) aren't cheap. California has legal requirements to report abuse to the police and those requirements fall on ALL medical professionals, people who work full time in medical facilities (doctors, nurses, receptionists, even the janitor), so there is a vanishingly small chance such abuse could be hidden.

I'm not going to state that I know 100% that you are mistaken, because I don't know all the facts. What I can state with reasonable confidence is, absent any actual evidence of abuse, that you are mistaken that this is a case of child abuse.

no male role models in the house

apart from her two brothers. It's not necessarily informative, but you do have to account for their presence and the fact that the parents adopted three boys.

While you did not use the word 'abuse', you have implied coercion which would be abuse in this case.

No doubt, he's been fed this idea already, at the age of 11.

The question is, is this a decision the kid would have made on his own, or are his two parents a couple of fuck ups?

This particular one could just have been more vulnerable, for whatever reason.

These statements can certainly be taken to imply coercion.

As for the two brothers, you said there were no male role models and I said there were two. It's also not irrelevant that if the mothers wanted a girl they could have adopted one, an issue you have not responded to.

No, nothing you quoted said that [there are NO long term negative effects to taking blockers]. It's entirely plausible that a kid might take blockers, then decide at 17 or 18 to transition back to male, then end up with a 3.5 inch penis for the rest of his life.

I'm going to refer to http://www.impactprogram.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Kuper-2014-Puberty-Blockers-Clinical-Research-Review.pdf (as PBCR). It's from a trans advocacy site, so not entirely neutral but it does cite published research.

I understand that blockers are used until the kid is about 16see edit. That is older than most kids starting puberty, but I understand there are treatments (hormone supplements) for kids with delayed puberty, so 16 is not outside the realm of 'normal'.

PBCR says that

In addition to blocking the effects of puberty on primary and secondary sex characteristics, GnRH analogs also prevent other changes associated with puberty including growth spurts and increases in bone density. Adolescents continue to grow in height while on GnRH analogs, but this growth is not as fast as during puberty. With appropriate dosing and monitoring, youth who start cross-sex hormones following puberty blockers reach a final height in the range associated with their affirmed gender rather than their sex assigned at birth [4, 5]. Research also has shown that delays in bone density generally reverse after puberty is resumed or cross-sex hormones are administered. In addition, studies have consistently found that GnRH analogs do not impact body proportions or body mass index (e.g., weight in relation to height) [8, 9, 10]. Nonetheless, endocrinology treatment guidelines recommend regular testing of height (every 3 months), bone density, and bone age (every 6 months) [1].

I'll grant you that saying "NO long term effects" may be hyperbolic. Some people (especially with certain genetic conditions) do have negative effects. Then again, untreated precocious puberty has long term negative effects. Similarly, untreated gender dysphoria has negative effects.

PBCR also says:

In an additional follow up study, 55 of these 70 adolescents were re-assessed in early adulthood, an average of 6 years after this initial start of puberty blockers, 4 years after starting cross-sex hormones, and 1.5 years since gender affirmation surgery (vaginoplasty or mastectomy and hysterectomy) [25]. Based on results from standardized measures, the authors concluded that this process of medical gender transition is successful at both eliminating gender dysphoria and reducing emotional distress. The authors also noted that no participants experienced regrets about transitioning, few reported experiences of victimization (11%), many regarded their social transition as “easy” (71%), and all reported being fairly to very satisfied with outcomes

It's not 100% true about EVERY trans person, world wide, but then nothing would be. However, all the kids in this (admittedly small) study said they were happy with the process.

And no, I'm not going to go along with a narrative of candy canes and petunias, just because it's the "politically correct" thing to do.

Good. Seriously, that's good. OTOH, I would hope you're not going to go along with a narrative of suicide and child abuse because it makes you happy.

The responsible thing to do is go follow the research, and at the moment the research says that for teens who have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, puberty blockers + therapy/counselling is the best course of treatment until the child is old enough to decide whether or not to transition.

Seriously, I have to ask, what is the biggest issue you have with this? That the parents are lesbians? That they're jewish? That it's a trans child?

If you think it's child abuse, do you have any evidence for that? I've been arguing FOR, in the general sense that blockers are an effective treatment for trans kids, but that doesn't mean I would agree with a child being coerced into transitioning.

However, there are laws in place such that the possibility of abuse in this case are vanishingly small.

[edit] found a source for the age when blockers stop: http://press.endocrine.org/doi/pdf/10.1210/jc.2009-0345

The relevant part is:

We recommend treating transsexual adolescents (Tanner stage 2) by suppressing puberty with GnRH analogues until age 16 years old, after which cross-sex hormones may be given. We suggest suppressing endogenous sex hormones, maintaining physiologic levels of gender-appropriate sex hormones and monitoring for known risks in adult transsexual persons.

Hopefully, kids are getting better information from their care takers than they are from advocacy organizations and people on the internet.

And there we agree.

If I read you right, you are concerned that dysphoric kids who receive blockers and later 'recant' may be adversely affected (stunted growth, micro-penis).

I can agree that is a valid concern, but I would respond that regarding stunted that growth hormone supplements, as for delayed puberty in non-dysphoric kids, apparently work effectively. Are they 100%? It's possible not, but 5'8" vs 5'10" isn't freakishly short. We're not talking dwarfism.

Micropenis is, according to wikipedia at least, "usually recognized shortly after birth." So the use of puberty blockers might not affect adult penis size either way.

I would suggest that dysphoria has some very strict requirements be met for diagnosis, so a kid who reaches that stage is not just acting on whimsy. They already have 'issues', penis size might not be that high on their list of priorities.

I wouldn't be surprised if consulting physicians aren't really giving a complete story.

That's a fairly serious charge, though.

I'm not treating this glibly, at least I am trying to approach it seriously. You are right there are issues with ANYTHING involving adolescent development.

What I am (and have been) arguing against is unfounded, and sometimes frankly bigoted, assumptions that this situation is child abuse (including the person who could not understand 'burden of proof') by pointing out that the medical community has well thought out positions and data to support those positions.

NOTE I'm not accusing you of bigotry. I've actually enjoyed this discussion. Your counter-points have helped me focus my arguments.

Sure, we now have the capability to delay puberty at will, perhaps even forever. (And we may speculate that there are young people who may desire to live in a state of childhood perpetually for their entire lives if they could, particularly among certain elements of the younger generations.)

It's not forever, though. Puberty blockers (according to the guidelines) are only prescribed from stage 2 of puberty (about 14-ish) up to age 16. It's not forever.

It's really not that bad. It's not good, you are tinkering with a person's development. My point is that, in some cases that tinkering is necessary and the benefits out weigh the risks.

It seems to me that whhat you're really arguing here is ensuring that the criteria are strict enough to distinguish real necessity and parental influence, and I totally agree with you on that.

What's in the best interest of the child IS what's most important. It's just that occasionally the best interest means allowing a boy to live as a girl.

[–]EsraYmssik 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How would you know? Has anyone performed randomized controlled study on boys with pharmacologically delayed puberty, who then went on to have that released and developed in a cis manner, and compared a treatment group to a control group on metrics such as final body mass, muscle development, genital development and psychosexual development?

Yes. According to this page from the NIH, there are approximately 3,000,000 kids receiving puberty blockers fro precocious puberty who then go on to develop normally as their birth gender.

[–]JesicaAndrela 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was going to say much the same as this. Heterosexual parents are increasingly making this decision as well. Whether you think pre-pubescent gender intervention is positive or not is one thing (going to be another 20 years until the really good data is available on whether it is more successful than later transitioning or not transitioning at all), but the sexualities of the parents is pretty irrelevant. http://zzporn.xyz/video/chloe-amour-joins-her-hot-pals-for-massage-fun/

As someone who is gay and knows plenty of gay people.

Lots of gay boys like to dress up as girls (because in a child's mind being gay is similar to being a girl..so they don't feel like they're in the right body)

Some gay men grow out of this "phase" and some don't. The ones who don't either become transgender or become a drag queen.

I think transitioning early is a bad idea...because if they are one of the gays (or even hetero) who grows out of it this kind of treatment is irreversible.

[–]16sapphireguys 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think anyone has argued that a child should be able to make that choice. Most arguments I hear, and what I believe myself, is that no child should be genitally mutilated, but if they choose circumcision when they reach adulthood then that is their choice.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The point is that a child is not a retard. Gender identity is something you can determine from a young age. It seems that a lot of contributors here have a misunderstanding of medical care for transgender youth. The well-being of a child's psychological state is far, far more important than the integrity of genitalia.

If the professional believes the child honestly identifies as female, the child is entitled to sex reassignment. It's only genital mutilation to you guys because you're all so attached to having penises that you can't imagine that someone might not want theirs.

[–]16sapphireguys 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the people here, it seems to me.

I actually agree with you, and I think a lot of people here are perhaps a bit misinformed. However, there is a healthy concern to be found in their protestations; children are very susceptible to influence and suggestion, and they think this might be the result of an ideological parenting style.

However, given that gender-dysphoria is a neurological condition, I think cases like this simply highlight the importance of advancing our medical understanding of the condition, and the cure (transitioning).

I actually think that early diagnosis and treatment is probably a positive thing. I worked as a teacher, and the differences in gender are very apparent in children from a very young age, and they become even more apparent as they enter puberty. Puberty is a time where we all form a greater sense of self, and the ways we develop are often typical of our biological sex. I imagine it would be beneficial to trans people if they could experience this crucial time as their desired gender.

[–]omnicidial 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Until the child is 16 to 18 years old, frankly I don't know we should give a fuck what they think about it. It's a choice that can't be taken back, and that child isn't old enough to make it Imo, and the parents shouldn't get to make that choice for them.

[–]Naftoid 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This IS a choice that can be taken back, because they aren't fully transitioning him. They are putting that off until the child is old enough.

I have 3 kids that age none of them is qualified to make that decision, furthermore if they suggested they were "deciding" something like that (my daughter is 10) 100% certain in my mind the idea that they should and they'll be rewarded for doing what someone wanted was planted by someone else and they're doing it for acceptance/reward they think they'll get.

No way is a 10 year old going to be mature enough to think this all the way through let alone a 3 year old.

If that little boy wanted to marry a 30 year old female teacher would you be cool signing off on his wedding? How about a 30 year old male teacher? Why not? Is he qualified to decide about major body modification that cannot be reversed but not qualified to marry?

How about drinking alcohol or driving a car?

So he's too young to smoke, drink, drive, have sex, vote, etc., but not to make a life-altering decision that just happens to be supported by his moms who subscribe to batshit crazy gender theory?

Nah. This is why I really can't support the transgender movement. It is insane. In order to "transition" correctly you cannot go through puberty as the "wrong" sex. (Sex hormones do not have remotely the same effects when administered after puberty, as they would if produced by the body during puberty.) Preventing this from happening has untold long-term effects and in the short term prevents the child from going through any of the normal developmental stages his/her peers are going through. Then there's the whole fact that the movement wants transitioning to be seen as a "right" that will need to be facilitated by taxpayers.

4/5 of decisions are also for the safety of the public. Disallowing her to get the treatment she wants for the future also sounds wrong.

When you were 11, what did you want, and how much influence did your parents have on it?

Eleven year olds haven't even gotten to the rebellion stage of maturing into adults. They have some measure of true free will but their parents have controlled their lives for so long that most will be in a stage of going with the flow until they figure out who they are and want to be. This is why you need to be 16 to drive, 18 to vote or join the army, 21 to drink, etc.

When I was 11, I knew I wanted to.be a boy. The problem is either way, this could damage or encourage the child.

Also, killing people at 18 but not being able to drink seems... retarded is the only word I can think of.

Exact numbers aside, because that's just not worth arguing about, there's basically no moral action that can be taken for the kid.

It's entirely possible for these things to be a brief phase of self-exploration, as well as being a true discovery about the long-term self. Strategically, you can only assume it is a phase, because if wrong, it delays improving the kid's life, but if you assume it's long term, and you're wrong, you're probably going to drive the kid to suicide or at least eternal self hatred.

No, the moral action is what's being taken by the couple in question: social transitioning and hormone blockers to delay permanent puberty in either direction. This is not hormone replacement therapy or surgery, despite what this comments section would have you believe.

When I was eleven I wanted to be thomas the tank engine. Then I wanted to be a velociraptor. If I had two parents who persuaded me to have chimney implants and fake talons, it would have been child abuse - and rightly so.

These decisions about our bodies should only be acted upon when someone reaches the age of consent, generally accepted to be around 18 (give or take). Eleven is way, way too young.

This kid is going to be hanging from the ceiling in a few years.

I would really like for someone to collect stats on lesbian mothers and transgender children.

I had some neighbours in the same situation, the boy-to-girl must have been around 5 or 6.

I wonder if it's a statistical occurrence.

I also wonder if it's related to the child's natural instinct to imitate their parents.
