In most countries, there is at least a slight son preference. No countries have a daughter preference. In several places, babies are killed for being girls, this doesn't happen to boys. In China there are suspiciously skewed sex ratios as a result of the one child policy. I think we know what would happen. Personally, I wouldn't choose, I wouldn't even want to know a baby's gender before it was born if I were to give birth.

The overwhelming majority of sex-selective IVF done today involves female embryos, not male. Something like 80%. Women want daughters.

Probably in countries like China and India the ratio would be much worse, like 10 men for every woman. But I feel like the average person in western countries would use this tech to have the opposite sex of what they had the first time.

We choose the genders of our children. The way is IVF, and then PGS testing for chromosomal abnormalities. Each fertilized egg is around 1000cells and frozen at day 5 or 6.

Our first batch had 6 blastocysts, but one was discarded due to trisome13 (it had a triplicate 13th chromosome and wouldn’t result in a live birth). Because it’s a genetic test, we knew we had 2 girls and 3 boys. We got to pick which one to implant.

We have a healthy daughter and healthy son now. My wife wanted the daughter and I wanted the son.

That has existed (with less than 100% accuracy) for over a decade: Centrifuge. Genetic material with less mass separates from that with more mass. Ivf. Done.

Many couples going that route are purported to choose female, statistically less chromosomal abnormalities for an older couple (older in baby making lab years means anyone over 35. And yes actually the father’s age does have an impact on that, though not as profound a risk as an older mom does) Many does not mean that most do make that sort of choice it is sort of a thing that would not be recorded in the chart.

It’s already like this, the only hold up for most people is the price. It would probably be equally divided if gender reveal videos are anything to go by. You’d see more disparity within certain demographics but overall it might even out.

Personally I’d want a daughter because I find that they’re easier to raise and look after imho.

Men here claim we live in a gynocentric society but if technology that let you choose the gender of your child became cheap and widely available there would be a disproportionate gap between the amount of boys and girls being born; with the majority being boys. Not very gynocentric if you ask me.

I've seen studies on this.

The studies showed that when asked if they preferred a son or daughter, in the middle-class and upper class in the US, people don't really have a preference for male or female children. There is a preference among poor men for male children. Not sure why that's the case, or if it's because foreign immigrants are over-represented among the poor in the US. Edit: Here's a source:

Gallup surveyed Americans 10 times from 1941 to 2011, and their answers remained virtually unchanged: If they could have one child, 40 percent would prefer a boy and 28 percent a girl (the rest showed no preference). [EDIT: This quote is incorrect. American men preferred boys, NOT American women.]

A new study, however, measured that preference in a different way. While having a daughter versus a son used to make American parents more likely to keep having children, theoretically to try for a son, now the opposite is true: Having a daughter makes it less likely that they keep having children. Some data from adoptions and fertility procedures that allow parents to choose the sex of their baby also shows a preference, to varying degrees, for girls.

First- and second-generation American immigrants, the new study found, continue to show a preference for sons.

However, I did see a comment by an actual in-vitro fertilization clinic. They said that most people didn't have a gender preference, but when they did have a gender preference, they preferred daughters over sons by something like a 2-to-1 margin. Obviously, in certain countries - like China and India - there has historically been a preference for male children. It got to the point where they outlawed sexual-selection abortions because people were preferentially aborting girls more often than boys.

Historically there has been a preference for male children. I think it’s still the case in south East Asian countries. However a recent trend is to prefer female children as they are considered less trouble and people see that girls do better in school etc, plus the expectations they will care for the parents when they grow old.

In the west there is definitely a preference for daughters. At least if you read opinion pieces etc. boys are considered awful and dangerous.

It seems to me that middle class women are already having 'designer' babies. If they are the 'strong and independent' type, they just pick a good looking guy and, since she perceives that she doesn't really need the guy she doesn't really have much riding on the relationship working out. They can't be too sure about sex but they can pick 'good looking, blonde hair, blue eyes, tall' and have a pretty good chance of that working out. even if she's a chubby, brown hair brown eyed average or below looking woman.

If those same women could choose the sex I imagine it would be 'one boy, one girl'. And if they only wanted one I think the chosen sex would depend on a few factors like, if they really loved their father they might have a boy. If they're a feminist, a girl.

In essence I think choices would depend mostly on 'image' and her 'dreams' and her politics.

If the woman is kinda poor, I'm thinking there'd be a tilt towards a boy because he can protect and provide. If she's one of those women that want a 'girlfriend' - a girl.

Main point is that most women aren't just 'happy' to have a baby, any baby... they want 'their' baby. It's not altruism. They want someone as close to them as possible. Maybe work out/improve a few kinks. Some of those 'devouring mother' types would actually choose a child that's more dependent on them. That's some twisted stuff but I've seen these types trying to create a co-dependent for fear of abandonment and all those gov'ment benefits. Munchausen by proxy.

I don’t see how that’s possible. You would probably have to inject some kind of chromosomal blocking shot that makes a man only produce X or Y sperm. And that could have devastating effects on the own man’s chromosomes

Depends on what part of the world you're talking about, leaving out sex-selective abortion. in the West, it could end up leading to a surplus of male births, but assuming no great social changes elsewhere, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East you'd likely see a more lopsided male ratio.

There's more to it than abortion. There's, last I knew, 3 ways to choose sex of your baby, or at least tip the odds in favor of one sex. Last I studied this, there was a way to, basically spin the sperm fast enough that it naturally separated them. Then you'd inseminate the woman with the sperm sex of their choice. You'd get about a 70% chance of having the sex you wanted. This was 15 years ago I studied this, I'm sure it's evolved.

As always, that kind of technology exists only for the financially elite. One of my concerns with this was that if you want a boy, what if you get a boy but he's not the "type" of boy the parents wanted? I could see some bougie parents saying "I didn't pay $40,000 for a son who did theatre. You're playing football."

All the ways I read you could tip the odds, including abortion, just scream "child abuse" to me, personally.

Several studies show that couples prefer having a son to a daughter. So, if a technology like this was to ever be brought to the masses that’s cost effective, there would be more male children. For every 10-15 men there will be 1 woman as what’s happening in China and India right now. In short, the gender ratios on dating apps would pretty much come into the real world. Two things can happen: women will be as choosy as they are on dating apps in real life so this in turn causes more men to compete to find a wife or women will detach from society and just sort of do their own thing (career, school, etc). The latter is likely what will happen as we see again in China and India. The birthrates are falling over there because women are not interested in having a family. There are entire villages where men will never get married (or even kiss a girl lmfao) because there’s simply not enough women.

I also think in a world with far more men then women, most women will form little villages with tons of protection and steer clear of any man. I forgot the place in Africa (or was it South America) where there’s an all female village. Ngl I would live in one. And then there would be sperm banks for those who wanted to procreate.

All in all, this is what will happen. I always find it funny when men brag about building society because their narcissistic tendencies sure as hell knows how to destroy it too 😭💪🏻🤣 I love it

I think there would be tendency to be fairly close to 50:50.

The main thing parents would want to avoid is having a child of the majority sex. For example, if babies were 60% male, they wouldn't want a boy, because they would be less likely to have successful relationships.

I imagine this would apply to a lesser extent in countries where there is a strong preference.

If parents did choose their child's sex, it would be very useful to have real time data, so that parents could choose the minority sex if the ratio departed much from 50:50.

I think we can only guess. Based on the current zeitgeist, i think there would be more females then males first, which isn't so big of an issue as if it was the opposite. On the long run, i think it would even out staying close to 50/50.

It's only anecdotal but most people i know who want at least two children wish to have one boy and one girl, but most i know who want only one wish to have a girl.

Some clusters of people will practice male preference; some female.

Clusters who practice female preference will tend to have enormous demographic advantage (a country with fertility rate of 1.4 can sustain its population if it's 70% female), while clusters with male preference will have significant economic advantage (women are worse workers than men).

Eventually, one practice will prevail over the other.

What would you choose and why?

First child by a coin toss; second opposite to first; third by a coin toss; fourth opposite to third, etc.
