When I worked in a flower shop, the women were also getting me to carry things for them with this form of flattery. It always seemed manipulative to me. Sometimes it was justified. I was, after all, a man in my prime and many of them were middle-aged or older women and they occasionally needed a particularly heavy box moved. Most of the time it was something they could easily handle and they were just being lazy and feeling like that was something beneath them. I couldn't help but think "Yes, men are stronger in general but you would GET stronger if you'd just go ahead and pick up the boxes that you CAN pick up."

Men are physically stronger than women 99% of the time. Not superior or inferior; stronger. Does that mean men should automatically be expected to do all the manual labor in the relationship? Fuck no, but it doesn't entitle them to tell a woman to "suck my dick" for asking for help either.

Oh man, fuck I hate this mentality. I work in a job where a lot of heavy lifting is involved with patients and the amount of times I get told 'oh you must be a strong woman' while my male co-worker gets nothing pisses me right off. Along side the 'oh you two girls won't be able to lift me!'. Thanks for pointing out a crazy sexist stereotype while trying to help you.

I am stronger than most of my male co-workers, mostly due to age difference, so to assume they should do the 'heavy lifting' is an insult to both of us.

I don't mind to move something heavy for other people, men or women, if I know that they are not physically able to do that. But I have problem with people that can the job themselves but expect me to do it just because I'm a man.

I talked about that around 1 year ago here about a similar situation that happened with me at my job.

To me, this is an analogy for divorce law/alimony.

After a divorce, a man is often required to provide money to a woman, either in the form of "child support" or as "alimony". Thus, he is legally required to continue the services he willingly gave within marriage.

However, after divorcing, a woman has no requirement to cook, clean or provide sex to the man. This comic subtly illustrates the double standard.

Is this really sexism? I mean biologically, men are naturally larger and stronger. There isn't anything we can do about that, socially. Its why we don't expect women to get jobs doing things like construction.

There are exceptions of course, like me (being rail thin and just about strong enough to open a bottle of ketchup.) and athletic women, of course, but both of these are extreme cases. Its not something we can just ignore under the pretext of political correctness.

I am not Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question: why do I get paid the same amount as my female colleagues when I am required to be able to competently perform my job (which regularly involves heavy lifting >50 lbs.) and theirs (which, no joke, solely involves making copies)?. I clearly have greater talents and/or skills, yet because we share the same formal title it would be illegal for me to be appropriately (read: more) compensated.

Edit: How would a feminist justify this discrepancy in pay?

The one issue I have with this comic is that being big and strong is generally seen as a compliment, while being weak and small is not. Is he really claiming to be upset by a compliment?? I think the bigger problem is the fact that when a woman is involved it immediately goes to SEX. I mean, maybe he had to do that to properly make the point about sexism. I dunno. First of all, interesting that the definition seems sexist.

Secondly, in the comic we see a positive prejudice - which is an established fact - that men are on average stronger than women. Can someone tell me what's the actual problem ? Have I just missed the joke ...

Take away the provocative wording, and it's kind of a useless example. There's nothing inherently sexist about being asked to help out with something that is physically easier for you. It's logical, it's teamwork. Sexist would be expecting a man to do something that a woman is 100% as capable of doing, just because of your perceived gender roles, i.e. paying for dinner all the time.

this... uh... kind of makes sense.

except we have given definitions of "strong" and "weak", which put strength as better than weakness, and certain opinions about certain acts (moving a couch is not generally seen as degrading to the person moving the couch, but sucking dick can be degrading, i guess). this is actually really complicated, because what if you're bossing someone around and making them do things for you (like moving couches)? that would be degrading to the person whom you're bossing around. and sucking dick may very well be something you really enjoy doing, so being asked to do so wouldn't be degrading.

this whole thing is a societal construct!

Blatant exaggeration and off topic, shocking and disproportionate twists are a trademark of C&H's humor as seen here and here.

The pun is based on the absurdity and inappropriateness of the response. Sure being put in that situation can feel slightly demeaning because it can be a manipulative attempt of sorts (it happened to me a few times and I felt really awkward), but let's not sink to Anita Sarkeesian's Tropes vs Women level of critique.

EDIT: 'can be manipulative'; there are many instances where asking a guy to carry stuff because he's a "strong man" is neither manipulative nor sexist.

this is pretty stupid. the woman asked a man for help with something for which he is naturally more suited, complimenting him and humbling herself in the process. important to note is that there are no real negative connotations to a man being big (meaning muscular) and strong.

he, in turn, insulted and sexually harassed her. his line of reasoning is illogical and communicates an unhealthy attitude toward sex, i.e., that sex (particularly oral sex) has largely got to do with a balance of power.

it's alright to recognize that the overwhelming majority of men possess more physical strength than even relatively strong women, to ask a man for help with a simple task that would benefit from such strength, and to compliment the man on that aspect of his maleness (whether or not he is particularly capable relative to other men). while it might be better to leave out the bit regarding masculinity, it would take a very petty person to interpret such words as some dangerously sexist perpetuation of stereotypes.

my friends and i, in helping each other move, have probably at least once half-jokingly celebrated our masculinity when or before or after lugging around heavy shit. i don't think most reasonable people would have any problem whatsoever asking a clearly capable woman-friend for help moving. but the fact is that getting to the point of being as strong as the average man would take work on a woman's part and would make her more like a man than a woman in that one sense. that is not a bad thing at all, and the real problem's with thinking or suggesting that it is.

i also wouldn't think of asking for help from any man i would expect to have too much trouble with the task, nor would i think less of him as a person for being physically weak. but it would make him less like a typical man in that one, small sense, however unimportant that might be and however hard it might be for him to accept. of course, i would never articulate as much to him, because it would only have the potential to offend and, again, it's unimportant.

a realistic situation complementary to the one in the comic, with the genders reversed, is harder to come up with because of the societal connotations to many of the traits that are more natural to women (and men as well, besides the one we're addressing). but let's imagine that we ask a woman to dance, complimenting her on her feminine gracefulness. is that really a slight against graceless women, or men who dance? or is someone being overly sensitive?

what's not being overly sensitive is expecting someone not to tell you you're small and weak and should suck their dick.

normally i don't pick apart jokes, but this is a political statement hidden in what's presented as a joke. and it isn't funny. the statement is 100% wrong, and that it's couched in a joke is a cop-out. men definitely do deserve a forum to discuss the issues that uniquely affect them, but this is an embarrassment.

Yes, both of those statements are sexist, but one is positive and empowering while the other is negative and degrading. Like most Cy&H, it's immature deliberately offensive humor. Still, this implies men are opposite to women, and therefore the opposites of compliments apply to the other gender, but obviously the opposite of compliments are insults, so you can insult the other gender.

This will generally produce a comedic, yet shallow, shock factor whenever you use any kind of gender-related complement for anyone.
