It can help identify distorted beliefs or negative coping mechanisms that are having an impact on your life.

Lots of traits aren’t all good or all bad, the same stubbornness that might help you stick to and solve complex problems at work might mean you stubbornly cling to relationships that aren’t good for you in your personal life.

But things like that can be hard to see when you’re zoomed in or just trying to survive.

A good therapist can help you identify where some cognitive processes you have, maybe learned from life or even inherently, are causing problems, without shame. They can offer alternatives strategies, or contrary evidence, or just a nonjudgemental space to work things through.

It really depends on why you’re there, therapy can do a lot, and there’s lots of different ways to go about it depending on what you’re bringing to it!

Some insights on therapy from my fiancé who is here with me right now:

-Felt relieving to get so many things off his chest

-Helped him with his self-esteem, which in turn put him in a better place for a relationship

-His therapist (female) didn't make him feel weird or othered for feeling the way he felt

-The more honest you are the rougher it is at first, but the more value you get in the end

It helps you untangle your negative thought processes that tend to be a big contributor in issues with dating/relationships. Also self esteem issues and learning to utilize your internal locus of control.

There are also different types of therapy. EDMR if you have a history of trauma and traumatic things. CBT which is standard therapy where it challenges negative thoughts. DBT which is like CBT but focuses on emotional regulation.

It's trial and error. It is also dependent on the work you put in and get out. Sometimes you may need more may need a different approach.

For the record it's not for picking up women it's for understanding and managing your own emotional baggage.

A lot of the problems I see affect ppl. Especially younger ppl are not so much actual problems but rather mindset issues.

Therapy would help you shift your mindset. ( Nihilism, neuroticism, anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, poor stress management, getting over past problems etc)

Or for some ppl they have the power to change/fix their life but they don't have the mental tools/guidance to, therapy might help them with that. (Growth mindset, accountability partner, outsource - person to bitch to/emotional labor/support/connection)

You will be paying some objective person for their emotional support, confidentiality and professional training.

They will be ur trusted confidant.( Bc ur paying them).

Edit : therapy won't transform u into a fuck boi or help u get laid. It will might help you be less annoying and less stressed.

Therapy, if nothing else, is a productive venting space.

Not only do you get to express your frustrations to someone else who doesn’t have any skin in the game, you also get to hear alternate perspectives, solutions, feedback, and coping strategies, all in a chill and respectful space where someone is incentivized to care about you and make you feel heard. It’s great.

There are different types of therapy and different reasons people go to therapy. If someone chooses to go to therapy, they’ll need to consult with mental health professionals to make sure they’re getting the right treatment.

Some people just seek counselling and use it as a stop gap when feeling generally disgruntled with life and it ends up being helpful e.g. some people are bad at identifying when they are self sabotaging, or how low their self-esteem is etc. I had a friend who started this way and it led her on a pathway to getting diagnosed with adhd which ended up helping make sense of her struggles over the years and get treated.

I personally didn’t find general counselling and other talking therapies particularly useful in anyway.

But trauma focused therapy (EDMR) did move me forward.

Therapy is good because all my friends and family are too nice to tell me the negative things I need to hear in order to grow as a person. A therapist is being paid to help me hear those things without spiraling and to help me figure out steps to take to address them.

I don't know anyone who's had therapy that wasn't either for grief or a mental disorder. It doesn't seem to have done them any harm. I think Americans like it though.

A therapist like a personal trainer, but for mental health. They can help you to create an "exercise plan" and guide you through the exercises so you don't make things worse. But the key thing is that you need to do the exercises - they won't do it for you. A personal trainer lifting the weights won't make you grow muscles. You also have "homework", similar to having a specific diet to grow muscles.

Some people are in a state where they can do things at home, some need a personal trainer to show them "the ropes" and after a while they can do the exercises on their own without a trainer, some have serious conditions and might need intensive training (like a person having a serious injury and needing physical therapy to get back to previous mobility).

People oftentimes tell "go to therapy" when something is beyond their ability to help. It's a suggestion to get professional help as a layman can't help you.

There isn't really one kind of therapy to be clear. There's many schools, many techniques, and it very much depends on what your problems are.

Like if you're wondering what it looks like in practice...you know the Sopranos presented therapy extremely well.

I myself haven't been to therapy, but I have a minor in counseling so I can tell you first and foremost it's a safe place to talk and be forced into self awareness gently and have your ideas explored and challenged.

The healing referenced very much depends on your problems. If you have a phobia of something...I mean we can address that and likely fix it so you'd go from being someone that can't even be in a room with the thing you're afraid of to someone who is fine in that room.

If you're struggling interpersonally because of things in your childhood or past then revisiting that with new eyes can be very curative.

But it really depends what is wrong and it really depends on applying the appropriate techniques for you to your problems.

I can say for me an awareness of these techniques helped me overcome a lot of anxiety, deal with stress disorder brought on by SA and my parents response to it, that was keeping me from having the friends, community, and relationships I wanted.

Ive had two experiences with therapy.

The first absolutely had a positive impact on my life: I was driven to go after experiencing some pretty disruptive anxiety attacks, periods of dissociation, and thoughts of self-deletion. I learned some genuinely helpful things about my physiological responses to stress, not just thoughts and feelings. My therapist also gave me some tools that I continued to use for several years. She recommended antidepressants but I wouldn’t try them for several more years out of stubbornness or fear or something.

My second experience about 10 years later really was a waste of time and money which surprised me: this time I was struggling with what I’ll describe as tokophobia. I saw two therapists and did lots of journaling and in the end the only things that really helped me were external to the whole process.

So basically you don’t know until you try it and you can quit any time you decide it’s not working for you. It literally could help you “get laid,” but probably not in the ways you expect.

Well there are evidence based therapy tools like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

These can be used to help people with a range of mental illnesses and even everday or life issues and difficulties.

Other than that it is a safe place to share your feelings and emotions and help process them.

I view therapy as upgrading your toolbox to handle life's issues.

Everyone of us is born with an individual personality into a very specific environment. Our personality and our environment interact with each other. We thus develop coping strategies to deal with life/ensure our survival.

As an adult, we usually leave the immediate environment we grew up in. We encounter new people and new problems. Some coping strategies in some circumstances will still be useful; in other situations the toolbox from our childhood will be insufficient.

That's where a good therapist comes in. They can show you that a hammer isn't always the best tool, e.g. not when you're trying to get a screw into a wall.

It can make you aware of patterns and thus enable you to consciously make different decisions.

Therapy is not a guarantee to get laid and a professional therapist would never make that promise. But therapy can make you critically examine what you're looking for in a romantic relationship, why you feel drawn to people with certain personality traits and how to healthily communicate your needs.

Therapy helps you come to acceptance and helps you cope. It also is supposed to challenge you and make you ask questions about your preconceived ideas and biases. It’s supposed to help you see new perspectives while also getting out buried emotions.

I've been in therapy twice, both for relative short periods of time. (Not counting marital counseling, though my ex bailed on that after not that many sessions too.)

In one, I was going through a really awful and traumatic breakup. (My ex both stalked me and ran a smear campaign on me, though not one that was very successful over the long term. The short term sucked, though.) I was really wearing out my close friends who offered shoulders to cry on. I needed to be able to work through the trauma and enjoy my time with my friends.

In the other, I was in a ridiculous amount of pain, while in grad school, dealing with a spine injury, and dealing with all the pressure of grad school. (And some fun things like learning I didn't have a near perfect auditory memory when I was in a ton of pain*. Which maybe doesn't sound like a big deal, but I'd always had that, so not having it was a shock.) I was stressed out, unhappy, and again, in a ton of pain all the time. I needed an outlet.

I guess those were both acute situations? People also work through longer term and more complicated problems.

*It turns out that the ACTH cascade inhibits the creation of new dendritic spines in the hippocampus. So, memories get created less and transferred into long term memory less. Why yes, I was working on the PhD in neurobio at that time...

Therapy isn’t some mystical “healing” and it’s not a reward system. It’s just learning how your patterns work so you’re less reactive, less defensive, and better at handling your own emotions. That tends to make relationships easier, not because you’re “doing the work,” but because you’re a more functional human being.

What i see in men is complete lack of self awareness and inability to put themselves in someone else's shoes, and unhealthy emotional patterns that lead to destructive behavior, and i'm not talking about violence, i'm talking to what men say that lead to people distancing from them when it wasn't the point.

And i know, that when you're in the moment it all might seem okay and why do you need to change, but for someone who worked through some similar stuff i'd say that it really is healing.

If you're going to therapy to start getting laid - don't bother. You have to work through so much and it's hard because you will be the one that fights back, that getting laid isn't enough of the motivator. You'll just pay big bucks to learn big words but still will be same, and if you didn't get laid now i'd assume knowing some words won't get you laid then.
