One funny comparison I've heard, at least about marital sex, is this: "Sex is like a toilet. You wouldn't buy a house just to have a toilet, but you'd never buy a house without a toilet."

I've also heard something like "Sex isn't everything, but when it's good, it's 10% of the relationship, and when it's bad, it's 90%." (or some similar statistical flip, like 20/80 or 70/30).

Another one is "Sex is like air. When you have it you don't think much about it. When you don't have it, it's all you can think about."

Regarding differences among men and women, I remember a joke or observation that was structured like, "For women, sex is dessert. It's nice to have, but extra. For men, sex is the whole meal." or it was like "Women and men both love sex, but women love sex like a good steak and men love sex like a drug high."

As an unmarried virgin who has only ever had one relationship I can't speak to the truth of these phrases, but it's all food for thought.

Here’s my question. How would men’s sexlessness be addressed? I have not yet seen a viable solution for this proposed on this sub. What measures do you want taken to resolve this issue? Your post lists all the solutions that aren’t viable. But it doesn’t give a suggestion for how this should be addressed. Cause the answer really depends on what you think the solution should be. It’s not important enough for other people to lose their rights and autonomy so you can have sex. But if you can find a solution that doesn’t take away someone else’s rights, then maybe we can debate if sex is important enough for that to be viable.

Sex is important. Most people need it to feel completely fulfilled, but I don't think it's in the same category as the other things you mentioned. People should be entitled to housing because without a home, they are exposed to the elements and other dangers. Being homeless can kill you. People should be entitled to an education because without it, they are essentially helpless and entirely reliant on others to navigate the world. A lack of sex won't kill you, nor does it make you a vulnerable adult.

Also, I know you said that you don't believe men are owed sex, but that is where this conversation goes. Let's say we do put sex in the same category as housing and education, what does that actually mean in practical terms? If someone is struggling to get laid, do they get to ask for a government provided sex partner, in the same way they would a government provided house?

Sex is important. Some people will struggle to find a partner and that will have a negative impact on their life. There is nothing that we can do about that as a society.

It appears pretty low on the Maslow's pyramid, so it's something that humans NEED.

I’ll bite. So if you actually read about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs it falls under a physiological need as a SPECIES (someone has to reproduce in order for humans to continue as a species).

At the INDIVIDUAL level it falls as a PART of love and belonging. But so does family connection, community connection, friends, etc.

So how important is sex at a species level? Vital, babies are how the species continue.

How important is it that an individual get laid?

Well social connection is a human need, and important for psychological wellbeing. But sex is just one version of connection. An individual can get social connection a lot of ways.

I do believe that social measures like reinvesting in the existence of third spaces can HELP with loneliness though.

Sex is important. Most people want sex. It is normal to be sad when you can't have sex while wanting it.

However, sex and your example of housing are very different. In order for men to have sex with women, women need to consent to sex with that man. And, as you said, since no one is owed sex, there is no moral obligation for women to have sex with men. On the other hand, you could argue that a tax-paying citizen is owed a certain level of housing accessibility by their government, which controls the distribution of wealth, land, and services which are funded by citizens' tax dollars and labor. It's not far fetched to say that a government does indeed owe its citizens housing.

And since you can't force women to have sex with men, there's not really a viable external solution to the issue of men not getting as much sex as they want. Men can, of course, do things in their own life to acquire sex. But outside of the individual man, there's really nothing anyone can tangibly do, regardless of how important it is. It's just going to suck for some men.

Sex/intimacy is important, so I am fine with legal prostitution.

It is not as important as healthcare, housing, or education. Why? Because you can survive and thrive as a member of the community without sex. You cannot without healthcare or housing. I've known two men who were likely virgins and one who simply found himself alone for his adult life but might have dated in highschool. He inquired after me becuase I am friendly. All three of these men have/had friends and family. They had jobs. They were/are productive members of society.

We have always had men and women who do not get married or have kids or have sex. And these people went long periods of time without sex or died virgins. Priests, monks, confirmed bachelors, or spinsters. Gender imbalances in places like UK post ww1 and 2 led to a lot of single women who never married.

If you don't have housing or healthcare, you are dead. Yes housing. None of you know the first thing about survival.

3 days without water

3 weeks without food.

You can live a full and complete life without sex.

Education is necessary for a functioning society.

Women do support programs that help men with mate pairing. We generally support public school funding that includes healthy attitudes, healthy lunches, and teaching children healthy management of emotions. Who doesn't? Men.

Women support job programs and training and mental health treatment, all to help men as well as women. Who doesn't? Men.

Women generally support expanded drug rehabilitation and help for the homeless. This again predominately helps men.

It's not direct coaching and it is sure not fucking lonely men, but we don't make men devote their bodies to others either. None the less, it could help men with establishing relationships.

In the end, less than 3% of men are virgins by 30. By 34, 54% of men are either married or cohabitating. That doesn't include how many men are just dating.

Most men get long term dating relationships, marriage, and cohabitation. Most men will date in their lives. Most men will get sex. This idea that men need to have sex every two weeks or they live in misery or wither away has no support.

And the dick-apocalpse threates need to stop. Men like running water, a functional military, and police too. And men I'm sure would like someone taking care of their kids, cleaning their asses in the hospital, and minding the homestead.

Women are not net takers. I am really really tired of this shit that women are net takers of services. First, I'd making a ton more bank if I didn't' have kids. It's called the motherhood penalty and it is well studied. Second, these numbers will continue to shift as the older generations who were more likely to have a traditional set up of a SAHM and working dad fade out.

Third, the unpaid labor of women:

For YEARS society has been able to ride on the unpaid labor of women.

This is child care.

This is elder care.

This is the free volunteer support given to churches, to PTOs, to schools, to blood banks. These are the moms that ride on school trips.

And women are sick of it because we do necessary work that is demeaned, dismissed, and devalued because it is not captured by the all mighty dollar.

So if kids are unnecessary for society, fine, no more kids and we will be good little tax payers. I'll wait for men to show up and run the bake sale at the local church.

I am one of those people who provides free education to children, and I get paid for it. I wouldn’t do it for free, even though I love my job.
You can argue that the government should subsidize prostitutes for lonely men, but you said yourself, the issue isn’t merely sex, but intimacy and connection. You can’t compel a person to love you and want to be with you.
The women are still there. They haven’t all gone away. There is not a global woman shortage.

The issue isn’t that men can’t get sex. The issue is that women are independent enough that they don’t need men to survive. Relationships don't simply happen for no reason. A relationship is based on fulfilling needs, and which needs are fulfilled determines the nature of the relationship. Companionship, intimacy, emotional support, and sex are all "needs" that marriage and dating are advertised as fulfilling, so if one of those is missing it's seen as a incomplete relationship at best, and often a violation of the social contract.
Have as much or as little sex as you want with whoever you want, but then be honest about the nature of your relationship.

Education isn’t free, we pay for it with our taxes. Unless you meant college. In America college is far more expensive now than in the 70’s even after accounting for inflation. This is because colleges decided to build tons of infrastructure and have huge facilities. The argument is that this big infrastructure projects are being paid for on the backs of students, who are going to school to fulfill their part of the social contract: get a good career and contribute to the economy.

Sex is a relationship. It’s the closest in proximity that you will ever get with another human being. If you aren’t paying for it, then each person is doing it because they want to be that close with the other. Something that requires someone else’s body in that intimate of a capacity requires that person to want to be THAT close to you in that capacity. It means that you have to be, at least to that person, likeable enough (and hygienic enough) for them to be that close.

I liken it to another important part of life: friendship. Friendships are important and provide a great number of benefits. But, you can’t force people to be friends with each other if they aren’t or don’t want to be. You can’t manufacture friendship with someone, it’s either there or it’s not. There are studies that say having close friendships can even lengthen your life. So what do you do? Well all you can do is be a good friend and hopefully people will recognize your friendly qualities and want to hang out with you. It's a hard question to answer. It's important (to most allosexual people), but how important? It seems to vary widely.

In terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs I figure it comes into play at the 'belonging and love' level and possibly also the 'esteem' level, depending on the person. Society and government mostly seem to focus on ensuring that more basic needs are met -- physiological needs and some security and safety needs. Although it's true that my government also provides for other needs, such as education, I don't know that that stems from an obligation so much as a mutual consensus that funding that was advantageous for society.

Assuming a baseline that consent is essential and we are not going to circumscribe anyone's personal liberties in order to address unmet needs in others in this arena, I'd be open to discussing ideas for how to improve unhappily celibate people's ability to have sex. I'm not really sure what that might look like, but I think it's a conversation that is at least worth having.

I think there's far too much focus on sex specifically, when romance/love also needs to be in the conversation, but that's just me.

I'd say it should be obvious that sex is important to human health. As biological orgasms, one of our primary drives will be to reproduce through some means, as it is the primary drive of all life as we know it. It the only way to guarantee the survival of the species, but also of our own genes, and thus, the only way we can survive past our life span.

Of course, the vast majority of sex had by humans today is not normally for the sole purpose of reproduction, but that doesn't mean that we don't still experience a rush of chemicals that make us feel far better about living. No doubt, this pleasure was an adaptation that was passed along because animals that found the process enjoyable would reproduce more.

Naturally, if someone can't access sex, it will have an impact on their mental health. This is something most people with access to it seem to be unable to understand.

As to whether or not society should address it, maybe. The inability to have sex or love has obvious effects on mental health. The vast majority of incels have mental issues of some sort, but this becomes chicken and egg; did the lack of sex and the feelings and thoughts that came about cause mental disorders to develop, or did mental disorders make them undesirable, thereby causing the lack of sex? I see most people saying that mental health should be addressed by society, but this problem in particular comes with tons of nuance.

What could be done?

The sex bot discussion will continue until they're here, but maybe. Some people seem to be able to delude themselves into thinking a machine can love them already, despite how rudimentary AI is today.

Legalizing proposition feels like an obvious answer. Sure, there's no love, but it's something.

Forcing children and teens to actually socialize during their developmental years, especially with the opposite sex, would likely do wonders.

A government dating app could work. Without the profit motive giving the app the incentive to keep customers single, the app could actually focus on its supposed purpose.

Therapy and sex therapy would help, obviously. Even just government care workers hired to simply talk to men or help them acclimatize to social areas would help.

Literally none of this will happen, though. Well, maybe the legalization of prostitution. Who knows.

Varies person to person. I'd say it's more like labor than housing (shelter is up there with food/water) or education (more in the interest of society than the individual). We all require constant maintenance, or labor. For the most part, we handle things like going to the bathroom on our own, but some of us need help with that too. Most are capable of taking care of their own sexual urges too. Very few people lack the ability to self pleasure. But no, you aren't owed anyone's labor except your parent's when you are young.

The facts remain:

Free will is the highest form of human existence, and what differentiates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Therefore, anything that impedes free will inhibits the human experience. In a Western world where consent is the rule of law, anything less than that inhibits free will. Free will > including everyone, because forcing people to fuck people they don't want to fuck is basically rape.
Physiological release is a biological need for men and can be satisfied by other means (masturbation, etc).
Human connection is important and part of a second tier of human priorities beyond basic sustenance. Sex does not always satisfy that - especially casual sex, which is the type most pedestalized by sexless incel men.
The author's name is Norah Vincent, not Vincent Norah. And while her book offered a look into the loneliness of male existence and the undue hardship men face especially as it pertains how we are seen as utility/labor for society, her self-demise occurred well after the book and was not exclusively related to her experiences while writing the book.
Furthermore, this indifferent treatment towards men that Norah Vincent wrote about tends to begin in adulthood, not in childhood, and is so pervasive throughout society that it cannot be deemed to be entirely women's fault - it is also the fault of corporate culture and overworking culture, which is a great lie that ironically many feminists also believe in. The bright eyed, bushy tailed, love-my-job-and-eager-to-excitedly -work-75-hours-a-week attitudes of many people (including women) in their 20s tend to fade into I-just-want-to-get-my-shit-done-in-40-hours-and-spend-time-with-my-family-and-friends by one's 30s. Most of the people who see "career" as liberating rather than a means of funding the rest of one's liberated life are just not that experienced in the workforce yet. That kind of commitment to one's career - which gives exactly 0 fucks about you back unless you're self-employed - is equally damaging to men and women, though men experience it at higher rates due to greater exposure to shift work, overnight work, weekend work, dangerous jobs, jobs that require travel, and jobs that require long periods away from home.
The main problem facing sexless men isn't "ugliness" it's lack of social skills. Coming off too horny, too desperate/needy, too detached/nonchalant, or just simply not being in any social situations at all is the root cause of most sexlessness. There are some really ugly motherfuckers who have found girlfriends, marriages, and had kids...and there are a lot of ugly people in the world pairing off. Staying at home gaming and ranting about women on the internet while meeting nearly 0 women IRL and deceptively "befriending" those he meets because he's afraid of rejection, and either pressuring or objectively pushing towards sex with his one online dating match every 6 months is a sure fire road towards inceldom.

Sex is extremely important within a healthy relationship, but it's not the be-all-end-all and it won't make a toxic relationship healthy. Yet for some reason, incels and virgins pedestalize sex as this validating, liberating act that will somehow open doors to a big secret club when in reality most of the people in the world don't even suspect these guys are virgins or incels until their bitterness starts leaking out.

Sex is a relational need for most people that are not on the asexual spectrum. Some people need it more, some less, but it is generally considered necessary in LTRs. As in the relationship will suffer without it.

People can survive without sex. They (statistically speaking) cannot survive social isolation, and most people genuinely need familial bonds or they will suffer greatly from depression. If they don't happen to be born into a family that provides those bonds, they genuinely need to find a partner and build their own familial bond with them, or they will suffer greatly from depression. For most of these partnerships, sex is a realtional and psychological need. This is not true for everyone, but it is for most people.

The one thing that seems to get close to replacing familial bonds in terms of psychological needs is religious devotion. We don't really know why, but it can sometimes mitigate severe depression in those who do not have familial bonds.

I'm not citing a source here, but this info should be in any intro to psych textbook.

The Problem with this is that women feel entitled to speak on this (which is dumb on their behalf) which triggers a counter-reaction in men which leads to some juvenile tug-of-war kind of thing where the goal isn't to come to a truthful conclusion but to validate one's opinion via convincing the other.

Considering how people have their first sexual experience in their late teens to 20’s, porn becoming a billion dollar industry, society loving the idea of sex that is seen through our shows, commercials, social media, etc. It supposedly was part of Maslov’s hierarchy of needs as well. Sex is indeed extremely important in our lives.

We see what happens to people who never have a sexual life. Sure they live but it’s a very depressing life and the lack of it can turn to anger and hatred. We’ve seen people go out and commit terrible crimes in the name of never having it. Incels, red pill and black pill existing is the result of certain men never having the chance to have a sexual life in which the message ranges from pulling the plug on life or maxxing your potential hoping it works out in the end.

The point is that sex is extremely important in our lives.

I am a man. I have studied gender issues since 1996. My overall concern is discrimination against men -- although this is not the topic at hand.

I have thought about the issue a lot and I have several conclusions.

Sex is not a right but it is a very important interest for men and possibly some women.
Any sane man should vote for legalization of sex work. Sadly most men do not vote in their own best interest.
Why are many men in USA sexless? Because sex work is illegal. In most of the World, sex work is legal or tolerated.
Any man or a woman in sexless marriage should divorce if possible.

Sex isn't what is important. It's intimacy that is important. And sex is one form of intimacy. And one of the only forms of intimacy a lot of men feel like they're allowed to have. Or they may not know any other ways to engage in intimacy with someone.

What is important about sex is finding deep, soul intertwining connections. Instead of meaningless, soulless, dehumanizing sex.

Speaking as someone with a "hbc". Which I would rather say I am quite sexually experienced and have had a wide array of sexual connections over the years. Ranging from shallow and emotionless to deep, cosmic, ethereal soul connections. It's been incredible.

Everyone should experience deep connection once in their lives. Whether in sex or in life as a whole.
