the problem with any "sex is a need" argument is how it relates to the right of "self-determination" of other people. Basically, if sex is a need, but people also have a right to decide who to have (or not have) sex with, which takes precedence?

right now, most people don't consider it a such a huge need that we can override other people's self-determination to get it. Hell, shelter/food is a need and entering someone else's property to get these is still a crime.

Sure, some may argue that governments should provide shelter/food for those in need and they may have a point. The difference is that you can't use the same argument for sex: food/shelter are just things, sex involves another human being.

Women aren't the only ones saying sex isn't a need. As a guy, I think other guys greatly exaggerate how vital of a need it is. I'd even potentially categorize it more as a want than a need at all.

As for where it would be on Maslow's Hierarchy, well you certainly don't need it for survival or safety, so right off the bat, it's 3rd level at most. And even then, I'd say sexual release is a "need" at that level on the heirarchy, but not sexual intercourse with another person. Masturbation is an adequate substitute for fulfilling that need. So there is no situation or any level of any hierarchy in which, specifically sexual intercourse with another person is a need.

Looking at the chart that I found, it belongs between "Belonging and Love Needs" and "Esteem Needs", the top tier of the lower half of the Heirarchy of Needs, listed as "Deficiency Needs".

While sex isn't an act that can exclusively fulfill those needs, it can be utilized in that fashion. The question for the critics of this would be "what actions would be recommended as an alternative?"

I consider living without sex to be like living on fastfood. It's not any kind of immediate threat and doing it for a day or a week is a negligible issue. Inevitably though you'll start feeling like shit constantly and nobody living that way for years is mistakeable for a healthy person.

Whether it is a 'need' or not comes down to semantics with respect to how one defines 'need'.

At any rate, sex is a primal aspect of human nature and behavior. Thinking about it in terms of needs or rights is too limited and wrongheaded.

The point is try to guide society to a place where as many people are happy as possible. And sex plays some role in that happiness. One also has to examine things like social stability and the birthrate when considering the impact of higher sexlessness rates.

Rising male sexlessness is nothing to laugh at. Historically, it has been a harbinger of very many bad things. That said, it's not fully clear what, if anything, is happening to male sexlessness rates in the West. And if something is happening, why? It's also true that technology has in many ways broken the cycle of history, so it is unclear whether more advanced societies can tolerate higher levels of male sexlessness with less issue than was typically true in the past.

But I think sex is a need in terms of mental and emotional health and growth. So is human connection, interaction and touch. No one is going to die because they were never socialized or touched, but they will have severe developmental delays if they never interact with other humans.

Sex is a basic need, it falls at the lowest level of the hierarchy. People can certainly manage without it, but they won't be at their best. My view is that women need sex just as much as men do but men are far weaker in their ability to contain that need when it is not available within a healthy relationship.

People have this idea that if something is a "Need" then others are somehow under a moral obligation to supply it. They are not. I say that whether or not sex is a "need" for any given definition of need, that does not place the government, or society, or any given woman under the obligation to supply it. No one is obligated to give you sex. Or food if you're starving, for that matter. There may be prudential reasons why we don't want large numbers of hungry people around, because that can cause bad shit to occur.

There may also be prudential reasons why we don't want really large numbers of celibate young men. (There may also be reason why we do want such, if for example, we need a large supply of disposable soldiers. The promise of women as loot can be a powerful motivation)

This discussion occurs so that sexually unsuccessful men can whine, or so that people can hate on sexually unsuccessful men. I would cheerfully consign both whiners and those who hate the less successful to the fires of hell.

Getting back to the original question, I say it is a need, but one that it will be up to you to meet, or not, according to your effort and good (Or ill) fortune.

Sex does not belong with the other physical needs like food, water, shelter because you will not die without it. And the purely physiological need for sex can easily be satisfied by masturbation. If people needed sex to live, monks and nuns would all be dead. It’s ridiculous. It belongs in the “love and belonging” and “esteem” sections of the pyramid. One could argue that reproduction is as basic as eating, but honestly so is family, friendship, a sense of belonging in your community. As for if humans can survive and thrive without sex, you can also ask if humans can survive and thrive without things like friendship or achievements. Survive? Yes? Thrive? As a woman I’m pretty disappointed when the sex doesn’t meet my standards.

The simple solution? Be willing and eager to take tips and have a conversation with your partner about your likes and dislikes.
