Good fiction tells the truth and can provide deep insight into the world and the human spirit. Anna Karenina, for example, tells a good deal of the truth about sexual dynamics.

I wouldn't categorize 50 Shades of Grey as good fiction. It's pornographic fantasy written for vapid, shallow women. It's popularity does give some insight though. There are very real women who read these kinds of books and it shows what kinds of men those women desire. It also reveals to me the kinds of women a lot of men have in mind when they are complaining about modern dating. I don't know what they're expecting if those are the types of women they are pursuing.

A real life relationship is going to have things like attainability, finances, social pressure, legality, safety, etc. influencing it to a heavy degree. The job of porn and erotica is just to get the consumer off. If it doesn't get the consumer off the consumer doesn't buy it. I have plenty of life examples of women that have known that have chased bad boys in real life, but I also know a good number of them that don't, but say things about guys being too nice, and wanting at least a little bit of an edge. Some of them might fantasize about bad boys, but have enough sense to not pursue it in real life.

We judge what we see. Your base premise here seems to be that guys think women like powerful dominant bad boys because a character in 50 shades does, which means you missed the point.

Setting aside whether 50 shades is evidence of anything or not, the point that is often made is that what shows women are attracted to such men is how immensly popular that story is with women, and that it's a story whose only draw is romance/sex appeal.

That is not learning from the fiction of the characters in the story, but from the reality of how attractive the story is to real women.

You raise some good points. And I mostly agree with what you’re saying. The only small flaw I’d point out is that it’s not usually the clearly unrealistic shows/movies that mislead people. It’s the ones that try to portray themselves as “realistic” (even when they really aren’t) that fool some people. So like, the adult romcoms and films like that. I’d say those movies/shows do more damage in terms of misleading guys about how women’s sexuality works.

But even then, I always try to warn people that the vast majority of TV/film is there to entertain you, not to educate you. So I agree with your post overall.
