Honor toward women: not women I don’t know. Women have made it abundantly clear they don’t need men, so I listened. I still have a knee-jerk reaction to be chivalrous to an extent but it’s nothing I wouldn’t do for a messed-up guy (hold the door if someone’s right behind me, give up a seat to an elderly/handicapped/pregnant person, etc). Children: I don’t have any. I’ll make sure my nieces and nephews are taken care of, but it’s not my job to deal with the rest of the planet’s mistakes. I donate to charities and food drives sometimes but I’m not losing any sleep over the outcomes.

Bonus question: my duty is to not fuck shit up and live a relatively clean existence. Sadly modern American society has blurred the lines on everything and I don’t have time to keep up with the bullshit anymore.

Being in my 50s, I was raised that way. More specifically to hold doors open, offer help if she has a flat, help get things off the shelf for struggling women, help lost children. My grandmother would actually smack me for not doing it. This was considered normal behavior decades ago. Not sexist, just manners. And to be clear, I’m not talking about some neck beard version of holding open a door, I mean don’t let it hit her in the face, and if you get there first, just hold it.

This crap has bit me in the ass so often over the last five years or so that I ended up on this subreddit. Since then I’ve come to recognize how little women do those kind of things for men. So, if I see a woman struggling I do feel a little guilty for not helping, but not guilty enough for me to do it.

Today there’s a better chance of getting attitude over it than a simple thank you. Your environment may be different, but until I see women showing men basic manners to men I see no reason for me to do it anymore. The modern woman has turned these basic actions that men do for men all the time, to sexist when men do it for women, and humiliating when women do it for men.

I come out of Wal-mart at 2AM and see a woman getting the shit beat out of her by her "boyfriend" (that she chose of her own free will to be with), I just keep walking... don't look back, don't even call the cops... maybe whistle the theme to the Andy Griffith Show as I walk by. She's "strong and independent" and "equal to a man", so she can handle it herself.

Bottom line: I'm not going to be the one to do bad things to them, but I'm also not going to save them... especially from themselves.

Helping kids... small children in imminent danger, I'd call the cops, but no direct contact since I don't want to be accused of being a pedo or some shit. Teenagers should have the sense to get out of the situation, or not land themselves in it to begin with. Beyond that, I've often thought about tutoring/coaching/mentoring someone else's kids... but that's just another thing that facilitates women making shitty choices about who they risk getting knocked up by... her kids get the "positive male presence" without her having to actually do the work to honor a husband as that presence.

As far as general 'duty to society' goes... I reciprocate what I get. As a male that isn't perfect, I don't believe society gives a shit if I live or die, so I don't feel as though I have a stake in society beyond not causing more burden myself.

As for women? I feel obligation to keep any commitments i personally make. I am currently in a monogamous relationship and therefore my obligation is to stay faithful and support my girlfriend -- as well as staying attractive, fit, ambitious, and driven to keep myself as the partner she decided to commit to. And i have communicated to her that i expect the converse, we agree to constantly improve ourselves for the other person.

I have weird compulsions like not letting my girlfriend pay for anything, making sure she's on the inside of the sidewalk, doing all the driving, even though these are basically meaningless gestures. Like she could pay for things on her own, but I feel uneasy accepting anything from a woman. I don't know if it's honour, or a sense of taking care of them or something, or if I'm just a weirdo. Kids are kids. I don't have any so don't have an opinion on them.

I do feel that if I'm insulted or challenged that I stand up to it. Really any show of authority puts my back up, and if I can't overcome the authority, I give it a begrudging respect.

"Duty" and "Honor" are social constructs that are used to create narratives that perpetuate a current system. It's assigned to people who do what is considered "good" in the current system.

Duty and Honor have also been used to justify murder and other atrocities ("honor killings", young men dying on battlefields, abortion, shotgun marriages, suicide, rape ect ect).

I reject narratives of "owing" labor out of duty or honor.

However, I am pro-social and want people to be able to receive help, so I support institutions that can take taxes I pay to fund the labor of people who want to do that sort of work. I'm an introvert - I don't want to have to sink hours of my day into complete strangers, regardless of whether they're men, women or children. No one is entitled to my time.

I do my best to follow through on whatever I commit to do, so that people can trust me to be a man of my word. But just being a man doesn't automatically commit me to a lifetime of labor protecting women. That is just another form of pedestalization - women don't require an entire gender to protect them. Society would do well to get rid of these notions, so they can contribute fully.

Personally I think this is actually a really good question.

So at one time I would have said yes, I do have a duty toward women. It would have at one time been both a duty and an honour that I might someday be called on to give my life to protect a woman or even her child.

That was a foolish time for me and I no longer feel that applies. Of course I understand that many women still expect that from men but I'm quite happy to shatter their dreams in that regard and to reject those gender roles that wen assume they get to hold men to while at the same time rejecting gender roles that used to apply to women.

Now I hold it to be true that if women can reject those roles then so can and so should men, I think in fact it's a weak man who still holds those roles to be true, weak because that man will give up his life for somebody who would not do the same for him. Give up his comfort for somebody who wouldn't be grateful for his sacrifice.

We are all equals now, so why should I protect or provide for any woman who is capable of protecting and providing for herself, why should I sacrifice for any woman when she's as capable as me.

Why would I ensure that a child is safe, the mother chose to have the child, she is responsible for the child, the father has no more input over the child and providing his sperm, why then should I sacrifice for a child, that's not my job, it belongs to the mother.

She has the right to abort the child for whatever reason, in fact many women see abortion as birth control, that they have the unilateral freedom to end a life at will or decide to maintain that life regardless of what any man might think or say. Then it falls to her that she made the choice she hears the consequence.

If say for example a woman falls in the street with a heart attack, she stays where she falls as far as I'm concerned, I will not put myself at risk to help, I will not put myself at risk of being sued for assault for helping. If I saw a woman being dragged into an alley, well she's strong and independent and she can handle it herself. If she's being attacked on the street, again she's a strong independent woman she can handle it herself. Women have given up the right to expect or even demand help from men when they demanded they be treated as an equal.

My honour then lies with me, it's down to me to deal with my shit and it's down to me alone.

I think you can have a moral code. I have an obligation to prepare my 3 children for the world. I have a wife and I am responsible for her as she is to me.

Uh, no, I do not feel like I have some sort of duty towards women. Generally, my logic with women is, I give as good as I get.

For children, I mean, yeah, if they were MY children, but here's the thing, it's a bit convoluted as to which children are "mine". Society isn't really as clear as we pretend like it is. Sometimes, a man is forced to support and have the fatherhood responsibilities to a child that isn't even biologically related to him, even when the man doesn't consent to being the father (ie. think paternity fraud). But, on the other hand, when the child IS biologically related to the man, the man doesn't have the same ability to influence the child as the mother. I mean, a guy can't choose to abort, for one. He is forced to "fight" to see his kids in a court of law when a divorce happens, whereas the mother simply has the right to her kids by default. I mean, ultimately, in my point of view, father and a mother should have an equal ability to influence the child and equal rights to the child, with the exception being if either the father or the mother was physically abusing the child, of course. Fathers in our modern world don't have an equal ability to influence a child as the mother, and fathers' don't have equal rights to their children in the same way as the mother. Which to me, makes me think "Do I REALLY get a choice to be a father? or is it more of an assignment?".

So, I guess, when it comes to having a duty towards children, it's kind of a weird thing to discuss. Sure, I feel like if the child is mine, if I chose to father it (ie. had the same significant choices as the mother at every step at the exact same point in time of the child's life), or if I made a conscious and informed choice to abort, then yeah ,I have a duty to the child. But, in the modern world, men aren't treated like fathers, they aren't given the same rights as women to their children, so really, I mean, I guess, if I lived in a more traditional part of the world, like say, the middle east, then yeah I would feel a duty to the child. In the west though, no, not really. Society gives women more rights, so women can deal with feeding it and clothing it. Give me the same rights, and I'll do my part.

Honor is not about sacrifice. It's not about giving. To me, honor is about respect. To honor someone, you need to respect them, and to me, respect isn't something that you hand out freely. Respect is something that someone earns from you, and it shouldn't be easy to earn. Tolerance is given, respect is earned.

I feel like I have honor towards myself, and really, only myself. And I don't hold myself to some other standard than I hold others. I earned respect for myself. I worked hard to meet the same criteria that I hold others to.

I have a duty towards who I am. I have a duty to act in my own best interest, because that is a part of honoring myself. I have a duty to not cut myself short, to not simply sit back and take responsibility for, say, a accident baby that I never wanted and she refused to abort, or to continue to financially support and raise a child that I didn't know wasn't mine, simply because others think that that should be what I do because I'm a man. What gives me honor is when I do my duty to myself, and what gives me my duty is the fact that I have my honor to uphold. That's why I say, it was a lot of work to build the foundation to that, to reach a point where I respect myself enough to the point where I had a sense of honor.

🧐 1. To women in general, not really other then being respectful, but to the women in my family i definitely feel i have a duty to protect them and uphold a strong character to put everyone at ease.

My own personal honor is definitely something i uphold. Society calls it ego and I know society pretty much says screw that, do whatever you want. I don’t personally feel that’d be what’s best for me.

Women: No, I have for the past few years basically existed without women. Being gay it has been easy for me to basically not consider women anymore and feel no special duty towards them.

ALTHOUGH, I wouldn't treat them as less valuable. If I were willing to help a man in a situation, I would help a woman in the same situation.

Children: Duty is an odd word, but I would legit die for a child's sake. I love kids and people have been giving me odd looks all my life and have thought that I am crazy or even... You know... For being a over 7ft tall man and having the dream career of being a pediatrician. I love nursing kids, looking after them and feeling like a parent. It fills my heart with the purest joy. I am often referred to as the "mom" or "dad" friend.

I really want to adopt with my bf. We are a few decades at least from men being able to have genetic offspring with their male spouses and although huge strides in creating artificial eggs from dna and artificial wombs have been made (even ahead from artificial sperm and stable bone marrow pregnancies) I can't really wait for that. A lot of kids are left behind in orphanages too. It doesn't need to be a baby.

Tldr: I treat adults about the same though I may admit I have slight bias in favor of men cuz hey, I am attracted to them, but I have a strong instinct to protect and care for kids so far so I want to center my life around the cause of helping children.

I feel the problem with chivalry isn’t that it needs to stop, it’s that we need to extend it to everyone.

I hold doors for anyone and have given my extra umbrella I keep in the car to any stranger I see without one in a downpour. I remind my guy friends they are a catch just as much as I do to my women friends because we all like to feel good about ourselves sometimes.

I’m starting to notice some women are becoming chivalrous towards men too. It really makes an impression when a woman holds the door or elevator for me, or offers to help when they notice I’m carrying too many items.

I don’t get people who see an inequality and think “let’s take away the privilege of those who have it” when instead you can think “let’s extend the privilege to those who don’t have it”.

I honestly feel like I have a duty to women and children, and I always have. I have learned that some women find it disrespectful, and some women (sometimes even family) will take advantage to it. Honestly, I think it is easier to act out of duty than it is to make decisions any other way. For example, I don’t have to ask, “Should I be nice to this person?” I can just ask, “What is my duty?”

I’ve seen some women become manipulative because of this sense of duty. They may see it if I’m not doing it enough as being “unfair” that I’m not doing enough. Usually, it’s not about how they want to take advantage of me; they just feel bad about their lives, and they need to take it out on someone. It isn’t right, but when I act out of duty, I can feel calm about knowing I’m doing enough.

Some women take being kind as sketchy. I know why. Niceness is close to godliness in my localized culture, so unhealthy men act nice to get what they want, instead of doing it out of honor or duty. I sometimes have to act more gruff than is my nature to show that I’m not unhealthy.

This is an interesting question. The duty to protect women is not naturally universal. Men often feel the duty to protect women of thier tribe, while acting in a predatory manner to women of other tribes.

There is a certain amount of possessiveness that comes along with this, because women of our tribe are OURS... in other words they are loyal to the men of their group.

American women are loyal only to themselves. This allows the men of America to mentally remove them from our tribe and instead act like predators with them. I owe them nothing and they owe me nothing. Therefore I have no requirement to protect them, and I feel no great shame in lying, cheating, stealing, or doing whatever I want within the bounds of the law with them. Nor will I condemn any man who does the same.

Children... I will whatever is required to preserve and protect children.

I would say my honor or duty is focused on myself and people I hold dear. By that I mean I will mostly help and care about those who care about me too, would that be friends or family, doesn't matter to me if it's men or women, children or elderly.

As for other people outside of my circle? I do help out people from time to time, I do have empathy, but compered to a lot of people I know I have a lot less of it. I do help my elderly neighbor then she need help with electronics, I do give my seat on the bus to people I believe need it more, I let pregnant women get ahead of my in some lines. But do I feel like that's my duty? No, not even a bit.

As for children... lets just say I'm not losing any sleep over any of them, not even a second.

bonus question. My honor stands from respecting myself. I live for myself and those I care about. I do thing that I think are right, because every person has different idea of what is honorable. At the end of my life (hope it's not soon as I'm only 24) I wish to think of my life and feel glad I lived for myself with no regrets. And I don't think wasting my time and energy helping others will give me satisfaction at the end.

I feel like everyone has a duty to older people.

I think I have a particular inclination to help middle-aged to older women.

I’ve never been in a situation where a child was in need like that but I feel like anyone would feed a hungry child.

In short, no. I'm more than happy to help people who seem to be struggling with something (carrying something, bump starting a car, getting something from the top shelf etc) But that has nothing to do with their gender. I'd be just as likely to hold a door open for a man carrying something as a women carrying something.

What about a duty for children?

Yes in the same way I would towards anyone who's mentally and physically incapable. If a child, an elderly person or a disabled person asked me for help to find the person who looks after them in a super market I'd be happy to help. If a grown man or woman asked me to help find their friends I'd tell them to sod off.

If i saw a child was being abused I'd contact the relevant authority.

I'm obviously trying not to be an asshole and to help people when I see them struggling with heavy weights, poor health, full hands, and such; I just don't make it specific to women and children.

My country and many others already have this basic duty towards women and children with a myriad of organizations and programs for them; there are even a small amount for men (after he has hit every branch falling down the tree of society there is a bit of a net at the very bottom).

With the divorce/spousal support laws being what they are where I am there is WAY too much of a duty directed at the 'breadwinner' (usually men) in financially caring for a supposed adult after a divorce.

As far as a duty to those around me in day to day life - I'd help anyone with the door, a dropped cane, helping a lost child find their parent, directions around town, or anything similar if it looked liked they needed it.

Now if I was in a sinking ship my first thought would be "even man for himself". I can't swim very well and I'm saving my own skin. The days of women and children first are in the distant past, and society has changed in many, many ways since then.

I feel a natural, instinctive duty towards both women and children. There is a need for honor, too. And male honor and female honor are not necessarily the same.

But entangling duty towards women and duty towards children in the same question is too complex. Naturally, they are related, but everything is related.

Duty occurs in context. It is very difficult to know what to do with instinctive feelings of duty towards women in today's political landscape. I, personally, do not have a certain answer as to how I would like gender relations to be constructed today. All I know for certain is that I would like an honest conversation with leading women that includes all the relevant factors.

I wouldn’t define it as honour. Honour is more...how a man treats himself. Like my teacher would say, when we bow in the dojo we are showing our true character. That’s honour, the way you act that lets the world know who you are. That being said, honour is not due to the honourless nor truth to the liar.

Duty: sure care, provision and protection of women and children that are family and maybe close friends depending on the individual. To my son and nieces and nephews I feel a sense of duty to foster their growth into independent functional and healthy adults.

I would and have called cops for domestic/interpersonal violence. No I wouldn’t get physically involved.
I’d be very nervous about approaching a crying child alone, as a white middle age man. I might depending on the circumstances.
I’ve gotten involved more often when men are picking on other weaker men. two assholes were harassing a mental ill man asking for change, or when this one homeless guy stole another homeless guy’s beer, I didn’t do anything when the thief got punched but me and a buddy jumped in to stop it when the one guy started boot fucking the beer thief. If I have no problems I may help others, but those close to me always always take the preference... I may help someone who is cold and hungry if I have nothing better to do and my own fellows do not need anything... but again, that didn't happen in the last 10 years.

Honor is a concept based on men's desire to be an useful to those close to them by providing and protecting them... back in the day men saw their entire village, or city as being close to them, so they helped and cared about almost everyone they met, but nowadays men tend to only see close family and friends as being part of their community... sometimes not even that. They may provide and protect to some women, in hopes of recognition, but it usually fails.

Also, the concept of honor swayed and changed... It's definition changed to something unrecognizable, something I ever felt... it became mystified... I couldn't care less about others if it cannot affect me or those I care. I don't believe in "good" only "beneficial". Honor to me today is just... religious bullshit. If everyone died, but those I care for were spared... I simply would just consider it a bother (because I would need to make my own food and whatnot).

Beyond opening doors for me (which women will do as well), I do get the sense that guys these days just don't care. I've had to carry loads of shit to my car and struggle with heavy furniture while people just mind their business. I have never expected a random man to help me and I never will.

Although - I do remember a guy who carried my books for me in high school when I dropped them. I was a total nerd in high school so I really was surprised by the gesture.

I don't get special treatment for being female outside of the bar/club scene. It does feel weird as I was raised in a culture where men do all the heavy lifting.

No. Especially not to women I don't know. I mentioned in r/exredpill some friends and I were leaving a club and we noticed 2 women being clearly harassed by 2 men. When the situation became physical my friends and I sprung into action and intervened. I tried to talk to the girls afterward and asked them if they wanted me to call them an Uber because as far as I knew they were just standing outside. Instead of thanking me and my friends for potentially saving their lives, they rudely screamed and ran. Before someone comes along as says "They were scared" that's BS. I'm CPR certified and I saved a guy's life. On a stretcher being taken to the hospital, he thanked me. Don't help women because they won't even appreciate what you do for them. Children are a little better. They are more defenseless than grown women. The best help you can give them is knowledge and experience that you have gathered from living longer than them.
