You're (insert basic adjective here). It's the bare minimum of effort and usually disguising what he's not saying.

Cute - "I like that you're naive/sexually inexperienced/young/trusting/manipulatable."

Smart - "You're smarter than me. I find this surprising and upsetting. It challenges my worldview. I might be a misogynist."

Pretty - "I said the thing. (Didn't even bother to break out the thesaurus for beautiful or gorgeous.) Sex now, please."

It's not like one weak compliment is a red flag. But it usually goes along with other signals. These guys tend to be patronizing. They don't actually listen to you when you're speaking; they're just waiting for their turn. They want the biggest reward for the least effort. Get ready to walk in the park or drink some coffee. They find other ways to undermine you and attack your confidence and self-worth. The occasional compliments are a slight counterbalance to the bad behavior so it's less noticeable at first.

I’ve struggled with being underweight for most of my life and so hearing this really pisses me off. Lol thanks a lot jackass you’re clearly just saying this because you think all women want to be skinny and that it’ll make me feel good about myself🙄 There’s an element of infantilization to it also, like they’re saying I’m so ~fragile~ and ~childlike~ which we know equates to “easily manipulated.”
