I feel like the media and mainstream influencers have completely blown the definition away from what its actually supposed to mean so I'll try and define it how I've seen it in my life (23 M).

Traditional masculinity, mainly a western interpretation of it, is focused on the concept of strength, both mental and physical. Stoicism, strength, and support, are all incarnations of this idea.

Toxic Masculinity is when these ideas and notions are twisted and internalized by men to the point that they begin to negatively impact the people around them. The concept of stoicism being an exemplary part of masculinity has changed recently due to the fact that over 70% of all recorded suicides are by men. Many people associate this with the mentality that these men weren't reaching out because they wanted to be stoic and not seem weak. Many times, men will feel weak, and because traditional masculinity says that they need to be strong, they will "prove" it to themself by abusing the people around them.

The challenge for feminist who created the term "toxic masculinity" is to try to come up with examples of masculinity that's not toxic. Till this day, they can't come up with a single example. The fact that there's no equivalent term for women tells you all there is to know behind their agenda.

The phenomenon it refers to is actually repressed masculinity. In a world where masculinity is seen as a bad thing, men are not taught what healthy masculinity is (telling men to express muh feelings doesn't count), and so they are misled. Unfortunately, if men were taught healthy masculinity, men would inevitably become patriarchal by nature, which represents an existential threat to feminists.

Like it or not, the entirety of civilisation has and will continue to be built on the backs of great men. Masculinity at its core is an active force, it's about having a vision for how you want to live your life and using your willpower to turn that vision into reality. Men are less neurotic, more able to cope with stress and a list of other traits that make men better at leading civilisation.

Toxic masculinity is the most egregious example of copping out of a rational discussion about real problems that effect males.

It isn't a valid construct in psychology or sociology. Despite this, many academictavists play lip service to it in hopes that it will catch on in society at large. Looks like it's worked.

They do this for one simple reason, it allows them rationalize adhering to radical feminist ideology regardless of how inconsistent it is with reality.

What am I talking about?

Over the last 30 years, radical feminists have promoted the idea that society is an oppressive patriarchy. They have drawn on conflict theory (Marxism) to articulate a theoretical basis for this claim.

For the uninitiated, conflict theory is a sociological theory that asserts that all of society and human history is marked by group based oppression.

They claim that people fall into one of two classes based on identity: those who are dominant (Oppressor classes) and those who subordinate (Oppressed classes).

The essential hypothesis of conflict theory is that every identity (Race, age, sex, SES etc..) places an individual within a group based hierarchy and can reliably predict socioeconomic outcomes.

Conflict theory states that dominant classes do better than the subordinate classes in every aspect of life.

In general this analysis accurately predicts economic, political and health outcomes for just about every group involved in the power relations described.

However, there it doesn't hold water in terms of male-female group relations. Specifically, it fails to account for the multiple ways in which men are clearly disadvantaged in society.

If patriarchy is a self perpetuating system that truly benefits men over women in a similar way as say racism for example benefits a whites over a minority group then we can expect a specific set of outcomes for each group according to conflict theory.

But this isn't the case for men and women's lives. In the US, men account for the majority of homeless, the majority of victims of all violent crime, the majority of false arrests and false convictions, are given harsher sentences (Even for the same crimes), account for roughly 45-50% of IPV victims.

Almost all male babies have their genitals mutilated via circumcision (A decision which the mother solely makes despite not having a penis herself), cannot vote unless they agree to serve in the military come draft time, have lower education attainment across the board and have the lower lifespan (Which makes sense when you consider the above factors).

In fact, with the exception of political power and wealth held almost exclusively by a small group of white males, the majority of men (99%) have lives that can't be described as privileged compared to women.

In fact, in many ways the outcomes (In health, education and incarceration) observed with men are much more similar to what you would see in a subordinate group rather than a dominant group.

So, to explain this away the RadFems have grabbed hold of "toxic masculinity" (Something created by a leftist branch of the men's movement) as an explanation for why men by and large aren't benefitting from the system that supposedly privileges them.

Rather than acknowledging women's part in perpetuating these systems in order to benefit themselves as a group, they instead opt to continue to abdicate any responsibility and try to make the issue entirely men's fault.

People like Michael Kimmel & Raewyn Connell have basically built their careers on explaining this discrepancy away whilst simultaneously vilifying the very same men that are being harmed by it.

Now to be clear, a great deal of this is on men since we are doing the "dirty work" in order to simp for women. However, feminists have got to stop pretending like women had no stake in perpetuating these systems (Slavery, genocide, pillaging) or that the women on the winning teams haven't immensely benefitted from them.

TL; DR Toxic masculinity is not a valid psychological construct and was coopted from the mythopoetic men's movement by radical feminists in order to explain away why "patriarchy" (A supposedly male privileging system) harms and kills men at much higher rates than it does women.

It's anything men do to feel or show masculinity that ultimately harms themselves. Manosphere men seem to often argue that no masculinity is toxic because it all helps to get them sex. The problem with much of masculinity is that it is by its nature competitive, which means that some men are going to be winners and get the prizes (sex, money and power), while others are going to be the losers and get none of that, or even worse die in violence while trying to get those things.

-Violence - men engaging in unncessary violent behavior (bar fights, street fights, gangs, etc) to prove they are men because men are tough and overly aggressive.

Toxic masculinity is the MRA answer to the feminist concept of internalized misogyny. (No, toxic masculinity didn't originate as a feminist term or concept, although feminists have somewhat coopted it.) Essentially, it is the way in which societally-forced standards of masculinity harm the men who internalize them.

For example, some would say that men suffering in silence or numbing their emotional pain with chemical substances because it's seen as weak/unmanly to seek mental health treatment is a result of toxic masculinity.

There term has been misappropriated, misinterpreted and misapplied to mean something more along the lines of "aspects of masculinity that hurt women/society at large" or just that masculinity in and of itself is inherently toxic. It's evolved into a term used to shame men instead of its original purpose which was to give men a framework with which to discuss how gendered expectations negatively impact them.

In essence, it's effectively used as a motte and bailey. On one hand, it is used to argue how bad masculinity is, and by extension, how bad men are. On the other, once that is attacked, it is treated as if all that was ever meant by the term, is that men suffer under the pressure to perform masculine behaviors. There is a third here, seeing that even the ones arguing toxic masculinity can't seem to agree about the definition: The extreme behaviors vaguely, or not at all linked to a societal masculinity, for example only being allowed the emotional expression of anger (plainly ludicrous from someone socialized as a man), or engaging in random violence.

It's useless, a term poisoned by ideology more than empiricism.

I don't use the term at all anymore – because it's gotten so twisted.

What I meant when I began using the term a few years ago was self-destructive masculinity. The type where men grow up to become adults that don't know how to handle negative emotion and when to get help.

When I began speaking about it, it was not written of as the feminist tranquilizer it is today. Fact is, the core of the issue was that men grow up without having the opportunity to learn some essential self-managing.

Now, I often see it being used to just call out sexist behaviours that might stem from benevolence.

Practice termed 'toxic' undermines the legitimacy of the thing, and drives others away from it. Look at toxic behavior in online gaming communities - same story. So masculinity that drives other people away from men or undermines the legitimacy of manliness is toxic.

Toxic behavior is part of the tradition of masculinity. Masculinity is not needed. Physical strength is an intrinsic part of traditional masculinity - but I do think that emotional control / bravery in the face of superior physical strength is even more fundamental. A weak-ass nerd refusing to be cowed by a beefy bully is a pretty manly ideal.

The term suddenly started making sense to me when I went back recently and relistened to some of the nu-metal bands I liked as a kid. Back when Limp Bizkit was the biggest rock band in the nation. I can’t think of a better emblem of toxic masculinity than Fred Durst. He’s got the fragility, the cockiness, the adolescent mind, the aggression that seems to want come out on anyone close enough. I think of it like a psych disorder. It's only a psych disorder if it's maladaptive or negatively impacts them self or the people around them. Masculinity in and of itself isn't toxic, it's how it's utilized that makes it toxic. Being strong and aggressive (like for self-defense or completing tasks that require heaps of grit) isn't inherently toxic. Being strong and aggressive to intimidate a woman into coercive consent is toxic.

Toxic masculinity: ‘boys don’t cry’, ‘man up’, etc. Stuff that forgets that men have emotions and are humans capable of being hurt and sad. Toxic femininity exists too, but we’d probably slide stuff like crazy physical ideals and probably slut shaming in there too. Ladies tend to do it more than men, I’ve found. But the crazy physical ideals could probably qualify as TM as well, given the whole ideal of the Capt America bod that is just not realistic for the majority of men.

Basically the best way to break it down is that if it’s making you feel bad for a way you’re ‘supposed’ to be, it’s toxic. If it’s making you feel bad because you’re not a man like you’re supposed to be, or that you have to act to certain ideals in order to be a man (‘my partner has to cum first’ comes to mind, because sometimes I just don’t get off AND I DONT CARE JUST FUCK ME) then I would consider it toxic masculinity.

I think I have a different perception of toxic masculinity. For me it basically means bullying someone's identity in an effort to force them to conform to a very strict, and sometimes unrealistic and unhealthy (mentally, physically) standards.

i.e. If you identify as a man and you express emotions freely through the whole spectrum, including traditionally undesirable one's to be expressed by men your identity may be threatened by others by them saying you're "not a man".

If you exhibit traits and/or interest or have hobbies that are traditionally considered feminine you're not a man.

You're only a man if you X,Y,& Z.

Things of that nature.

It's all down to perception and a way for women to shame men or to abuse men with the cover of making them better.

Let's take a very simple example, let's say you're on a date with a woman, you get the door for her, you think that you're being s gentleman and looking out for her, she appreciates that gesture, another woman sees it and thinks it's wrong, often because nobody had done that for her.

You can be easily accused of being toxic or of toxic masculinity because from her perspective, your displaying dominance over that woman.

Let's take another example, violence is argued as an example, how though is it if that violence is used to defend or protect another, well here's where it gets spicy then, if a woman sees a man being violent and doesn't have the full context of why she is justified to claim toxic masculinity, yet if men everywhere reject the use of violence men are shamed by the very same women for being cowards for not protecting them, not being prepared for war to protect them, that they will have to go to some shit bowl country to die instead of the men.

In the simplest terms, it's forcing men into a box. This box has very specific things in it that define what being a man is, and anything outside of the box, if touched even once, will make you less of a man, "cucked", "beta", "numale", "soy".

Violence. (Unless he's using his size and strength to protecting her or defend her honour).

Aggression (Unless he's being aggressive competing to get her, or resources for her)

Stoicism (Unless her being unable to read his emotions is a major turn on).

Overt Sexuality (Horrific if he's not attractive, panty drenching if he is).

"Entitled to Sex" (Again, horrific, unless his confidence in escalating turns her on.)

Toxic masculinity COULD be defined as inappropriate male behaviour where toxic femininity could be the gender-flipped corollary. Like women performing retro-active abortion on their own kids (murder), or calling a man a child-rapist to get full custody in court. Or for being jealous of, and toxic to, every female who is thinner or better looking. Or for constantly stirring up trouble and drama in her social circles using lies or just gossip.

The Red Pill doesn't call this "toxic femininity" we just call it shitty female behaviour. They then quickly fire back and say NOT ALL WOMEN ARE LIKE THAT and we reply "Most are, and all of them can be, given enough time or the right circumstances."

Toxic masculinity is following abitrary standards of conformity that are against the interests of the individual and I would say the society as a whole.

For example when considering domestic violence;

Many trad men would find it hillarious and openly mock a man that is the victim of emotional and physical violence at the hands of a woman and to them it would be an indication of the weakness of the man, what man is so pathetic that he cant even stand up to his wife/girlfriend.

Those few trad men who acknowledge that domestic violence is a legitimate issue just say that men should go to the gym, which is utter garbage as being physically imposing does not preclude you from being a victim of domestic abuse.

In any case what good would going to the gym do if you are unable to properly defend yourself, both trad men and feminists would condemn the man in this case, as no real man hits a woman, with some even covering this rule as far as legit self defense.

Where trad men are kind of right is that excepting serious mental health for a woman to physically assault you suggests the highest level of contempt and dispespect that she has for you as a man.

So in a sense they are right that the man is seen as weak and contempible in the opinion of the abuser, however the answer isnt to "become a real man" and defend yourself neither is it to attempt to take control of the relationship.

the only thing you can do in that situation is to walk away as there is no solution that ends in your favor rather than giving up, to trad men this is a sign of lack of charachter.
