Women neg a lot too.

Just last Friday, I had a woman comment that my muscles probably would mean I would be bad in bad. Tired of people on here making out as if women are some poor, downtrodden demographic. Negging goes both ways.

It works because our minds fixate on the negative. You can get 100 compliments on something but the 3 criticisms you get are the things you will remember most clearly. That's why when athletes win championships you so often hear "nobody thought we could do it" or something similar, when actually many many people thought they could do it.

However, I disagree with the definition you are focusing on. It's not necessarily supposed to be downright insulting, it's often meant to be lightly provocative in order to gain attention and engagement. Irritating enough to gain your attention, not so irritating as to just be insta-blocked.

We are getting better at sniffing it out but people generally are still very susceptible to wasting huge amounts of time arguing with trolls online. They are not always so obvious as you are making it seem, they can be more subtle and just waste your time, basically endlessly (Energy Vampires?). It's probably a lesson any woman experimenting with dating apps has to learn: when to not give attention to low effort, low quality attempts at engagement. Otherwise you burn out pretty quickly.

Women neg men a lot too. Many women humiliate their bf or husband based on his pens size, his sexual performance, using his vulnerabilities against him, etc

Its not a men or a women issue. Its just people who are insecure, but not just insecure but also have resentment (either towards their partner, her past, her friends, or towards himself, etc.) and don't have enough self awareness or empathy towards their partner (this is most of the time can be mutually inclusive).

There is also soft version of it called as shit test.

It is used to make them do something (to give more attention, put more efforts, have more sex etc), or not do something (leaving the relationship or getting distracted to other men/women, etc). To control them.

Edit: Negging is not just done in relationships or by single person. It is also done to women by slut shaming them and to men by virgin shaming, height shaming, di*k shaming, etc. Like to control them.

It is even more strong and noticeable in online gender specific spaces like some subs we all know here.

it seems like a high risk strategy to you because you think about it cold hearted from your living room with noone in mind. in order to judge it at face value you need to consider it when it comes from a guy you're really into, after seeing him for couple months, when the intensity, infatuation and investment build up is already there. will it always work? def not, but nothing does.

anyway, I don't do negging I think it's lame as cheeks. I'm a much bigger fan however of it's cousin, playful teasing. I don't even do it for "results", it's just kinda part of who I am

I can only imagine that it might work if the woman is really attracted to the man already, but is still trying to “shit test” him in order to determine his worth. Basically, it seems like the male version of a shit test to me. I don’t think that it would work at all if the woman is on the fence regarding being attracted to the guy, and I don’t think that most women who are actually attracted to a man shit test anyway (this is my general experience).

So yeah, I agree that negging is dumb and useless.

Originally, it was just a dumb, gameified word used to describe normal flirting behavior, and then had some bullshit post-hoc "psychological" explanation added to it.

The original form of negging came from the PUA community, and it was just teasing. That's really all it was, "don't be afraid to tease a woman just because you think she's attractive." And I think that actually is good advice since many people view teasing as a form of affection and it can demonstrate confidence.

The problem was the explanation PUAs tacked on to it was that it impacts her self-esteem and she then wants to please you to earn it back, which meant normal teasing soon became outright insults, leading people to correctly characterize it as emotional manipulation. I think this can work in certain instances, especially women who already have self-esteem issues, but obviously it's a shitty thing to do.

In theory, it invokes a competitive mindset, where the subject feels they must overcome not meeting someone's standards. There's an art to it. If you come off too strong, you'll be seen as an asshole (like you mention in your OP). If you are clever enough, you can blur the lines of teasing/flirting.

Women effectively do this as well, btw. An example of that is any time they say something like "a real man would..."

Negging doesn't work by lowering self esteem, it works by quickly filtering for women that already have self-esteem issues and are more likely to have sex to feel validated. It doesn't work on the majority of women and that's kind of the point. It's kind of similar to why scam emails are often poorly written and obvious scams to most people - they only want the most gullible people to call back because they're the most likely to pay into the scam.

Negging is moronic. It doesn't work, and the little bit it may seem to work is either because there's something else going along it (showing a spine, a spur of confidence) or because you're targeting the type of mental instability you don't want in your life.

Either way, there are better ways.

I think it came from the pickup artist community. Its not about lowering standards but making women want to prove themselves to you.

Chances are anything that continues to be done from the olden days has its purpose. Negging was quite common in the pickup artist stuff so I'd assume it works. It's like catcalling. It doesn't "work" in this sense that it gets the girl, but it works for rejecting preemptively / telling other guys "she looks good"

There's a more "dark triad" version of negging and a more PC version of negging which basically amounts to normal banter and teasing. I don't go into the fucked up manipulative shit, but I have found the closer you get to that morally ambiguous line, the more attractive women find you.

I think it primarily has to do with the (perceived) high risk. You are showing you have balls pretty much, and you aren't afraid to lose her because you have other options. Its also a status thing, higher status people are more willing to dish out criticism.

Also this might just be your personal preference. Usually the extra bitchy women who constantly shit test are the ones who like it the most when you fire back. You might be on the shyer side and not a fan of that kind of social interaction, but believe me, there are definitely women who love hearing socially skilled "negative comments" about them.

describing it as emotional manipulation is a stretch. while that’s possible, i highly doubt that’s whats happening most of the time.

i definitely think it “works.” i feel like most couples are able to poke fun at their significant others shortcomings. i find it romantic. it not only shows a degree of observation and attention that you can pick out an amusing shortcoming, but its an acceptance of that shortcoming also.

I get that “negging” is supposed to emotionally manipulate women into lowering her standards by lowering her self-esteem. However, does this ever actually work?

Women like drama and to compete, and believe they're entitled never to be negged ( regardless of circumstance ) .

I personally can’t imagine why any woman would respond positively to negative comments or backhanded compliments.

She doesn't have to react positively, simply react.
