As a PP woman, my strategy (for lack of a better word) was:

  • on first dates I would always offer to at least split the check;

  • if I knew there wouldn't be a second date because I wasn't interested, I'd almost always insist on picking up the whole tab but at the very least split it;

  • if I knew I wanted a second date, I'd strongly offer to either pick up the whole tab or at least split the check. BUT if the guy insists on paying, I'll confidently tell him I'll get the next one and then proceed to pay for the second date.

In my experience, most of my first date guys insisted on picking up the whole first-date tab. If we ended up on the second date, they would "let me" pick up the tab and would be super appreciative of it. Across the board, all the guys in each of these scenarios seemed to walk away with a good impression of me and of themselves because of my offer to split/pay. They didn't feel emasculated.

What do you all think of this scenario?
